As head of the Commercial Depart- ment he wasiilargely responsible for the progress made in that part of our curriculum, including the instituting of the N.Y.A. system. ln his classes We experienced some of the most valuable hours of our school life. During his long term here as teacher of some of us and friend of all, Mr. Correll embodied all those characteristics we like to think of as typical of the spirit of Lawrence High School. fi gy Q 1 ' s 5 f ' 1 . Dodd Me People Wflo Work Here . .. Our ,sjuloerinfenclenh . . Notice that beam of pride on Mr. Dodds face? lt illus- trates the feeling that all Lawrencians, from the top down, have for the school. Our Superintendent of Schools has good cause for feeling proud because our rapid progress is due, in a great measure, to his tireless efforts. When the post of Superintendent became vacant in l935, Mr. Dodd, having been a chemistry teacher in the school, knew thoroughly the problems confronting the system and was chosen to nll the vacancy. He has since proved his understanding by institut- ing the much needed Guidance Department, encouraging the music and art departments, and expanding the vocational courses. For his pride in us, weire twice as proud of him. l l Mr. Cecil C. MacDonald Our lgrincilaaf. . . May l have your attention? May I have your attention? lVlr. lVlacDon- ald speakingf, The voice greeting us from the loudspeaker system every morning has come to be just as much a part of our curriculum as our classes. On mornings when the broadcast is late, or not heard at all, something seems dehnitely wrong with the day. ln this same way Mr. MacDonald's friendly presence has always been re- assuring to Lawrencians, even before the broadcasting system. We students have found in him a sincere friend al- ways willing to help untangle any problem with which we cannot cope. Our principal has always thrown him- self whole-heartedly into school ac- tivities and is inevitably present to encourage our teams, congratulating the winners, consoling the losers. Thus he has earned a place in our fond re- membrances of high school days. Our ,fdzmidfanf principaf. . . When we were Freshmen, Miss Telft was, to us, inseparably connected with the little black book, the sym- bol of her position as Assistant Princi- pal and the long arm of discipline. ln four years of high school since then we have come to know her as a lively personality and efficient director, mainly responsible for maintaining our usual calm routine. Besides her other duties, Miss Tefft is also head of the Social Studies Department, and the exceptional sense of fair play she has shown at all times has brought her the respect of all Lawrencians, teachers and students. anal fke jacuky... Ordinarily if you saw the figures 97.26 you'd think it was a re- port indicating warm weather, but in this case it indicates Martin Aron- stein's average, the highest in the sen- ior class. liver since he first crossed the threshold of Lawrence he has received all l'l's'l on his report card. That he can also add and subtract is evidenced by his Mathematics average of-no fooling-10024 . Dont let the picture fool you: he's really a nice lelloxv and has been ac- tive in extracurricular activities as a member of the llonor Society, Editor of Cross Sectimz, Business Manager of the Lczwremiiavz, and member of many other clubs. ln his junior year he re- ceived the llonor Society cup for his outstanding scholastic record. This year the seniors set out to make everybody else believe it, too. Having elected capable othcers, a Faculty Ad- viser and a Faculty Treasurer, they turned their attention toward select- ing a ring and a pin to set them apart from the other classes. This accomplished, all bent their ef- forts to make Tish,l' the chosen sen- ior play, a roaring success. Directed by Miss Ellsworth, it was just that, much to everyones delight. Elushed with success, the Class of ,ll then turned all thoughts to the grand hnale of the social season, the Senior Prom. After hectic prepara- tions the bands were chosen, the gym was decorated, refreshments were planned, and THE night nnally ar- rived. HMr. Yisitor, l should like you to meet the hostesses of Lawrence High School. I hope my form is socially correct, because these are the girls who really know when things are comme il faut. The main purpose of the Hostess Club is to teach its members to become gracious hostesses when the opportu- nity arises. Toward this end the mem- bers have spent a busy year planning and holding such affairs as a Hallow- een tea dance, a Christmas luncheon, several birthday parties, a few cake sales, and a card party. Mrs. Emma B. Horn and several other guest ex- perts gave the girls helpful hints on the art of running a successful social affair. With the money raised by the vari- ous activities the group made a highly enjoyable excursion to New York to see a Broadway play. 7 you Pe MLAOIHQ. . . Refusing to let the girls outshine them in the social graces, the boys es- tablished the Hospitality Club with Miss Sloane as faculty adviser. The main objective is to make the boys less selfconscious when entertaining their friends or being entertained by them. The members have given parties for both students and faculty, and, be- sides arranging the entertainment, they planned and cooked the food themselves. Mmm? Adapted from the famous Mary Roberts Rinehart stories, it involves a forty-live year old spinster, her two old maid com- panions, and her young nephew vaca- tioning in a hotel near the Mexican border. Bandits, a safe robbery, a sup- posed murder, and the inevitable ro- mance make up most of the plot. Miss Ellsworth staged it in her usual excellent fashion, adding a novel touch by having newsboys rush up and down the aisles during intermis- sion announcing news which later ap- pears in papers on the stage. Mr. Forrester Pierce is the director of the Physical Education Depart- ment, and under him is the coaching stall and the faculty manager, Mr. Leslie Outterson. Football, our major Held of con- quest, is ably overseen by Coach Nicholas Farina and his assistant coaches Andrews and Yanderbush. 67 ffl larch junior Varsity football is coached by Messrs. Hirsch and Hayes, and six man football by Mr. Kogel. Successful basketball seasons de- pend upon Coach Vanderbush and Faculty Manager Mr. William Caton. ln the spring Mr. Andrews is coach on the baseball diamond, and Mr. Whitman puts the boys through their paces on the track. The Golf Team learns how to swing itl' from Mr, Kavanagh. ln tennis and handball we depend on Mr. Cameron and Mr. lio- gel respectively to guide their teams to victory. Mr. Page heads a cham- pionship boxing team which success- fully defended its title on March 28. 'llhe combined records of all our teams show that our coaches really lcnow their business. 246112 uno! Captain Mixer Sarro received the Miles Trophy for highest scoring back in the Branch. We found that as our production of the 1941 Lawrencian progressed, all these factors had to be supplied. For our RAW MATERIALS, we drew from the abundance of activity taking place within the school. An editorial board, a staff of more than sixty students and lV1r. Coombs, our faculty adviser, supplied the needed LABOR. But we still were not prepared for entirely efficient production. We lacked the Hnal factor- CAPITAL. It is true we could have produced a yearbook using only those funds received from within the school. Why then, should we have included the ad- vertising section? The answer is obvious. Those extra funds which the adver- tising section represents have meant the difference between just another year- book and the 1941 Lawrencian. To convey by written word, Serious, tragic or absurd Thoughts that people will not only read but heed Is the goal toward which I pressg But whether with success Is something which has not yet been decreed. Like Ogden Nash inventive Or like Pegler most dissentive Or like F.P.A. a column I'd like to write like anyone, some day. But it's not an easy task Undertaking to unmask The sadness and the gladness on this earth. Thorough preparation And sincere determination Are essential if the tyro'd prove his worth. For if you want to have your say That's the will-and then the way Is an olio of luck and chance and effort well appliedg And even though my name May be never known to fame The world will never say I haven't Or just a simple rhymer like Millay tried. Of him it is only said that 'the was very fond of musicf' Small wonder then that he gave first thought to the mighty voice for which Chickering is famous today. Modern Chiekering craftsmen have added clarity and fullness to its tones, modern designers have perfected new styles, but the soul of the instrument is one of simple beauty-as Jonas Chick- ering desired it.
