We were predestined to follow a remarkable career, and have unerringly done so to the end. We elected Joseph Star. President; Peter Tanous, Vice-President; Joan Strauss, Secretary; Berton Sloane, Treasurer; and Miss Grace Clause, Faculty Advisor. To finance the club we carried on cake sales, and a bridge. At the end of the school term, we betook ourselves to New York and “Third Little Show”. Thus our lives as Freshmen ended, and we were ready for the next step as SOPHOMORES from whose ranks were elected Joel Laskey, President; Elliot Wolf. Vice President; Marjorie Kolmer, Secretary; Estelle Schapira, Treasurer; and Miss Katherine Blank, Faculty Advisor. Helen Friedherg and Marjorie Kolmer were our outstanding scholars and added much prestige to the club. The year’s work was terminated by going “en masse” to see “Of Thee I Sing”, and we returned in the fall as grown-up JUNIORS who elected Rhoda Kanner, President; Leonard Levy, Vice President; Vera Mesibov, Secretary; Peter Tanous, Treasurer; and Miss Katherine Blank, Faculty Advisor. We held high place in the year’s divertissements, which included an Opportunity Contest, the sale of “Fight Lawrence” buttons, and a number of cake and candy sales. Several of our members were admitted to the Honor Society, including Ruth Frankfurter, Alfred Goldsmith, Victory Weckstein, Adele Lewis, and Ruth Rosenberg. The Varsity Club gave entree to John Peyser, Ruth Frankfurter, Katherine Both, Jean Meek, Vera Mesibov, Estelle Schapira, and Harry Buxbaum. Oddly enough, nothing was done with the funds in the treasury which were given to next year’s SENIORS who accepted them with gratefulness and thanks. We immediately elected Sanford Shapiro, President; Joel Laskey, Vice President; Helen S. Friedherg, Secretary; Peter Tanous, Treasurer; and Miss Elsie R. Teffl, Faculty-Advisor. In order to conduct a dance and publish an annual, cake and candy sales were held, as well as a Popularity Contest, and of course large returns resulted from the Senior play, so that in spite of the Depression we were able to uphold traditions of the Senior class. Among those of our number who have made names for themselves in athletics are: Harry Buxbaum, Thomas Leitch, Wallace Hopkins, John Peyser, Leonard Charnay, Alfred Goldsmith, Myron Sterngold, Adele Lewis, Jean Meek, Julia Pastor, and Dorothy Pepper. And in scholastics: Marion Fertel, Ruth Frankfurter, Helen S. Fried-berg, Alfred Goldsmith, Adele Lewis, and Ruth Rosenberg are our pride and j°y. Thus we attain our final goal, graduation, some of us to continue on t college, others to enter business, but all accompanied with pleasant recollections of our association with Lawrence High. Page twenty-six Senior Class Prophecy Receiving permission from the Office to do so, we five scribes, honored by the selection of our class, journeyed to Mt. Olympus to learn the future of our fellow Seniors from the Sybil there enthroned. All was silent alter our humble petition was asked, then a great crash of thunder resounded over the hills, and fearing for our lives we would have fled from the spot instantly, but were stayed by the magic tones of the Sybil as she spoke thus: I see a kingdom by the sea called “Lawrencia , wherein reside the fairest people of the age. (Ahem!) It is ruled over by King Sanford of the House of Shapiro, beloved by all the land. He has many advisors, but, like-most men, usually does as his wife, Queen Helen of the House of Friedberg, bids. His crafty old treasurer, Sir Peter Tanous, controls the exchequer, and counts his moneys ever)- night lest there be some discrepancy in the accounts. There is a ball-room tilled with laughing young people, for they are fond of dancing and partying, and enjoy the lavish splendor of court life. Beautiful young duchesses and marchionesses; Lady Kay Both, Lady Rose Cestari. Lady Miriam Barondcss, and Lady Jane Rubenstein glide across the floor to the strains of a waltz, flirting with Sir Roland Abraham, Duke Paul Altman, Lord Anton Armbruster, and Baron William Bernius, representative noblemen from neighboring courts. Madame Carol Dattlebaum, the king’s favorite, flashes a smile at Lord Harry Buxbaum, with that “come hither look and Lord Harry “comes hither . I sec the court mathematician, Bernard Brod, beaming genially on all; the royal scribe. Job Farrington, puckering his brow for inspiration; and, bending over Lady Ruth Frankfurter is Prince John, the leaning lower of But hark! A flourish of trumpets! Ah! ’Tis “Coley” Asinof, the court herald, announcing the entry of the royal family of Lawrencia. Enter King Sanford and Queen Helen, followed by the Crown Prince Leonard of Char-nay with his consort, Lady Jane Anne, whose palace on the Judson River is world-famous for its iniquities, or do 1 mean antiquities? After them file the lovely princesses Pauline of Chamberlain, Dorothy, the Pepper-pot of the family, Elaine of Weston, and Eleanor, who has the Wohl world at her feet. After them, in rapid procession come the Princes Stanley of Berney, John, sporting a Brandt-new crown, Walter of Brambir, Robert of Elkins, Albert of Schonwetter, and. the babies of the family, Prince Alfred, Prince Austin, and Prince Martin. There are also many celebrities of stage, radio, and screen present. Ruth Craft, the famous acrobatic dancer; Madame Hazel Derrick, the well-known Lawrencian hair stylist with her coiffure arranged in a mode interpretative of a dying swordfish; also those charming radio entertainers, Rita Mulcahy. Shirley Marinon, Eileen McManus, and Evelyn Sheindleman. And over there in the corner is our little Kitty, Chaikin all over with excitement! ! ! Refreshments are served under the supervision of Butler Wallace Hopkins, who is to the palace what Oscar is to the Waldorf. He is giving his particular attention to Madame Rosalie Langfelder, the great dramatic actress, for her temperament is very unsteady, especially when she thinks her scene Peyser Page twenty-seven is being stolen, as it might be with these many socialites and royal personages milling about Madame Langfelder is accompanied by her understudy. Miss Rhoda Kanner, an aspiring young actress with much verve and incom-patability, who goes into mourning after each shattered romance so that the poor child is continually in black. Her constant companion is Lord Thomas, a Leitch on the royal pocketbook. Next to his Lordship sits Sir Joel Laskey. He is wan and thin, poor man, for he has been preparing plans for a high-school yearbook, and is now busily engaged, (with, of course not to) his charming little secretary, Ruth Rosenberg, the very picture of penned-up energy? ? ? With Sir Joel is his nurse. Miss Elvira Rinder, from whom he takes his medicine quite willingly. (Well! Wouldn’t you?) The court jester, Melvin Liebowitz, has just finished mimicking the children’s tutor, Air. Nathaniel Barish, but the latter is patient, for he believes in the old adage, “Humor a fool and see your dentist at least twice a year”. The throng is startled by the sudden entrance of Marvin (Come Out) Chaiken, captain of the Guards. “Victory,” (Weckstein) he shouts, “we won, 12-0.” “Hurrah,” everyone screams, and jumps up to welcome the conquering heroes. The flower girls, Nona Ernstein, Marion Fertel, Breda Gleason, Eleanor Grainger, Mary Hannon, Mildred Shearer, and Hazel W est, sprinkle pansies upon the brave, stalwart fighters, who are now massed in the ballroom, with Walter Donovan, Ernest Broadhurst, Richard Cleaver, and George Walker bringing up the rear. But alack and alas! 'Tis a sad sight, for only half the number remains, though they are alive and kicking, aye, alive and kicking. Jerry Danowitz, the chemical mixer is missing a curl; Milt Grossman and Edgar Kearn support themselves on one crutch. The two Daniels, Pollera and Richfield smile weakly at Lady Gertrude Berkowitz, with Jay Silberman, Myron Sterngold and Marshall Tulin, getting along swimmingly under torrents of praise. During the tumult. King Sanford mounts the dais on which stand the thrones, and whispers a few words into Crier Coleman’s ear, upon which the latter sounds his trumpet for silence: “His Majesty desires that we sing the national anthem in honor of today’s brilliant victory.” Everyone acclaims the suggestion, and the ladies of the ensemble prepare to do the national jig. led by Hope Kaliski, Adele Omark, Grace Harding. Muriel Jacobson. Adele Lewis, Annabelle McCoy, and Jean Meek. Our marvelous baritone, Anthony Napoli, assisted by Anthony Conte di Contino, (wuz yo’ all addressin' me, suh?) tests his vocal cords, much to everyone’s ultimate discomfort, while the female court orchestra, conducted by Pauline Breitbart, and composed of Shirley Meyer, Vera Mesibov. Julia Pastor, Anna Ponte, Helen Planthaber, Helen Reilly, Elaine Remsen, Florence Slater, and Yolanda Tripodo. tune up their instruments. Just as they are about to begin. Lord Morton Winkle dashes into the group, shouting, “Lady Lipkint’s horse came in first at the A1 Smith Brown Derby with Thomas Pizzigati jockeying!” At this information, Lady Ruth gasps, turns pale, throws up her hands, and faints. The orchestra, hoping to revive her wilted Ladyship, blares the Lawrencian national anthem, terminated by the appropriate designation, “The land of the Spree and the home of the Knave”. Alas! we must go now; where, we know not. Our mem’ries here are very dear. And we love this old school; So ere we part now, we’ll obey its rule. We give you this tune; our own senior song. So please sing it as we go along— Chorus: Our time has come to leave you, So farewell, dear Lawrence High. We never will forget you. And we’ll return bye and bye. You were our only teacher. Ever steadfast and true. Though on life’s trails we must venture now. And we must go along. We’ll always sing your praises out. With poetry and song. We go with regrets and a sigh. As we leave dear old Lawrence High. Nathaniel Barish. 934 Page twenty-nine £, awrencLcm Senior Class Play With their usual ingenuity, originality, and perspicacity, the Senior Class did the unprecedented and presented a murder-mystery, “The Thirteenth Chair”. This was indeed the peer of all previous productions, and was a huge success financially as well as artistically, due to Miss Ellsworth’s untiring efforts. The play was given on the evenings of March 22 and 2.3, 1934, at number three school, and great was the eagerness with which it was awaited. Excitement ran high in the dressing rooms as “les artistes” made up for their parts, and prepared to launch or be launched upon the stage; and fast heat the hearts of their proud “ma’s and pa’s” as they awaited, with expectant eyes, their talented progeny. Finally, after much last minute primping, the time came for the curtain to rise, revealing as it did so, Rhoda Kanner and Joh Farrington, tripping the light fantastic. They did well with the parts of Helen O’Neill and Will Crosby, who hoped to “tie the knot” very soon. While engrossed in professing their love, Mrs. Crosby, Will’s mother, enters, in the person of Ruth Lipkint, who carried her part with great naturalness and effectiveness. After Mrs. Crosby, dutifully follows “Papa Crosby”, interpreted by Bernard Brod with a mustache ’n all. A little scene takes place with Mother. Father. Son. and Daughter-in-law-to-be, interrupted bv the appearance of Victor Cohen, playing the part of Edward Wales. THE VICTIM OF THE KILLER ! He is done away with in the first act, regretful because of his fine work. A heated scene ensues between Will and Wales, but the situation is relieved by the entrance of the Crosbys’ dinner guests: Mary Eastwood: a woman who is always doing what she shouldn’t. Cap-tivatingly played by Ruth Rosenberg. Helen Trent: ill’s sister, unwilling to accept the consequences of her own actions. Charmingly performed by Carolyn Chaikin. Braddish Trent. Helen’s husband: happy-go-lucky and likeable, played so naturally by John Peyser. Howard Standish: a believer in pomp and circumstance. Accuratelv interpreted by Foster Rosenthal. Phillip Mason: an artist, temperamental and sensitive, although the murderer of two men. Excellently portrayed by Jerry Adler. Elizabeth Erskine: the daughter of a banker and “proud of it”. Well played by Vera Mesibov. Grace Standish: the loving sister of Howard. Interpreted in fine style by Ruth Frankfurter. Also, Wallace Hopkins as Pollock, a gentleman butler grown old with the family. Joel Laskey, offering an auspicious performance as the inspector. Tim Donahue. Page thirty Danny Richfield, as Sergeant Dunn, carrying on his comedy with commendable neatness. Myron Sterngold, hilariously portraying Doolan, the “cop”. And last, but certainly not least. Rosalie Langfelder playing the difficult role of the medium in a most magnificent manner. The entire production retained the eery, sordid effect desired, and though difficult for amateurs, was accomplished with great skill. During the interludes between acts, piano music was supplied by Elvira Rinder and Joyce Titelman. and our lavish praise goes to the following people for their brilliant co-operation : STAGE CREW Jerome Danowitz William Bernius Anthony Contino Walter Bratnbir Martin Weingold John Peyser William Newton ELECTRICIANS Marvin Chaikin Alfred Goldsmith Henry Witzel Austin Schweitzer PROPERTIES Ruth Frankfurter Albert Schonwetter Rhoda Kanner Vera Mesibov Ruth Rosenberg Ruth Lipkint PRESS Sanford Shapiro Alfred Goldsmith Stanley Berney Albert Schonwetter Marion Fertel Milton Grossman Nathaniel Barish Austin Schweitzer Melvin Liebowitz Peter Tanous USHERS Helen Friedberg Kathryn Both Ruth Craft Jane Anne Judson Nona Ernstcin Hazel Gerrick Grace Harding Hope Kaliski Adele Omark Elvira Rinder Jane Rubenstein Evelyn Sheindelman Miriam Barondess for t934 Page thirty-one J awrencLan Page thirty-two for tgsj Page thirty-three JSawrencLan Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1934, being in a precarious state of mind and senility, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament, and do bequeath to our luckless legatees the following: To Mr. MacDonald we leave a new corps of office assistants. May they be as efficient (?) as their predecessors of 1934. To Miss Tefl't we leave the hope that at some time in the near future, a Senior Class will fail to pick her as advisor, and thereby relieve her of many sleepless nights worrying about its deplorable financial conditions. To Eleanor Eunice we leave a cure for Friday afternoon Valencia-itis, to be handed out in place of excuses. To Miss Jensen we bequeath an automatic oil-burner and air-conditioner for her sole use in the English room. To Miss Tweedie we leave Albert Sokoloff and Joe Cairo . . . ! ! To Miss Strauch we leave a pair of snow-shoes so that she can travel more quickly from Jamaica to Lawrence during the next blizzard. To Mr. Dodd we leave a men’s smoking room with a miniature furnace for atmospheric effect. To Mr. Pierce we leave a new set of eligibility rules . . . ! ! To Miss Kellock we leave seven traceable Seniors in place of Rhoda Kanner. Coleman Asinof. Ruth Lipkint, Joel Laskey, Ruth Frankfurter, Bernard Brod, and Comrade Grossman. To Miss Ellsworth we bequeath a book of Mother Goose Rhymes for next year's Senior Play. And to the office force we leave Jerry Kanner so that Barish’s bright, smiling face will not be too sorely missed. We owe much; We have nothing: The rest we leave to the poor. (Signed) Senior Class of 1934. Page thirty-four ACTIVITIES ■£ awrencLan Because the ’34 Senior Class of Lawrence High School knows Mr. Sanford Shapiro for what he is, as one man it elected him President. The deserving Mr. Joel Laskey was rewarded with the Vice Presidency. Miss Helen S. Friedberg was raised to “Keeper of the Minutes” (don’t tell anybody but we think it was because she writes so nicely). The class showed its regard for and appreciation of that master of finance, Mr. Peter Tanous, by electing him treasurer for the second time in its history. And, of course, Miss Tefft was chosen our faculty advisor. What would the Senior Class—any Senior Class be without Miss Tefft? We hate to think of it. The Senior Class is very proud of its officers—and with reason, too, don’t you think? Or do you? Lawrencian Board It seems to us that the people on the Annual Board were very well-chosen. Here they are: Senior Write-Ups Committee is headed by Joseph Farrington as chairman, and consists of Carolyn Chaikin, Ruth Frankfurter, Helen S. Friedberg, Hazel Gerrick and Ruth Lipkint. The Local Write-Ups Committee is headed by Ruth Rosenberg—Marion Fertel is the underdog. The Business Board, headed by Coleman Asinof with Peter Tanous as Assistant Manager, contains within its folds Helen S. Friedberg, Martin Weingold, Morton Win-kel, Nathaniel Parish. Walter Brambir and Wallace Hopkins. The members of this department deserve special praise for accomplishing all that they have. Alfred Goldsmith and Myron Sterngold did their best by the Sports Write-Ups. The members of the Photography Board (Bernard Brod, Leonard Charnav and Chairman. Marvin Chaikin) have absolutely worked tbeir fingers to the bone in their efforts to get everybody satisfied. Henry Witzel served in the capacity of artist. Chairman Eleanor Grainger, together with Mildred Shearer. Elaine Remsen, and Jean Meek constitute the official typists for the “Lawrencian”. At the head of this conglomeration of celebrities is the capable Joel Laskey. Editor-in-Chief. aicled and abetted by Hazel Gerrick. Assistant Editor-in-Chief. Page thirty-six The dramatic club’s numerous activities included the presentation of an assem bly of one-act plays, written and produced by the members. One of its features was an original publicity stunt. The group then saw “Mary, Queen of Scotland”, by Maxwell Anderson. At present they are preparing for the annual tournament of plays. Our actors have progressed rapidly in the study and appreciation of dramatic art. OFFICERS Joel Laskey ................ President Natalie Cohen ......... Vice President Ruth Rosenberg ............. This, the second year of “Mental Pabulum’s” existence, showed greater development and promise for the publication. Circulation has increased to a large extent, but the wholehearted support of the school is lacking. Although we have lost a few veterans through graduation, we are hopeful of having another great team. “Practice makes perfect” is our boys’ motto and they stick to it. Captained by “Pat” Stamile and aided by “Bud” Davis, Palmer Farrington, and a host of promising, eager newcomers, the golf team appears as good as ever. Led by Captain Jerry Adler, and ably supported by Austin Schweitzer, Billy Stone, and George Shaskan, Lawrence has an all-veteran tennis team this year. This is the same team that scored decisive victories over such formidable opponents as Valley Stream, Lynbrook, South Side, and Long Beach. For this reason there are high hopes for an excellent season, and our chances for the championship of the new league about to be formed look very good. Tennis This year our basketball team may be called the “hard luck” team of Lawrence. We outplayed our rivals in everyone of the games that we lost. Usually these games were lost by lucky shots from the middle of the floor. Mr. Pierce claims that this year’s team is the best he has seen since 1926. Our only hope is to have as good a team next year. As was expected. Captain George Kirk led the league in scoring and was a member of the All-Scholastic team. Our high-scoring guard. Harry Buxbaum, also made the All-Scholastic team. Although they did not win the championship, the Lawrence girls had one of the most successful seasons in recent years, defeating such strong teams as Woodmere, Baldwin, and Valley Stream, and losing to Freeport, supposedly the best team in the county, only by a very narrow margin. Captain Adele Lewis starred, while her teammates, Molly Pastor, Adele Otcns, Lillian Frost, Breda Gleason, and Muriel Vorbach, played almost equally as well. Boys Basketball Girls Basketball Page forty-three for i934 = =£ awrencLan Football The beginning of the season found the outlook very bright. We had many veterans and many promising newcomers. We had one of the strongest and fastest teams on the island. We lost our first game to N. C. C. by a long forward pass, but made up for it in the second by defeating Great Neck 18-0, all the touchdowns being made by Captain Harry Buxbaum. After a week’s layoff we lost our big game to Freeport which made our boys lose heart. After about two more defeats we beat Central 21-12. In the final game we were beaten badly by a weaker Lynbrook team. The outlook for the future is quite bright and Coach Pierce has great plans for next year. Wrestling As this was our first year in wrestling, nothing much was expected of the team. Captained by Anton Armbruster we entered the County Championships at Valley Stream. Only two of our boys passed the first round. Cairo, in the 95-lb. class, reached the semi-finals, where he was beaten in a hotly contested bout. “Whitie” Sterngold. 175-lb. class, reached the finals only to be thrown in 5:50 after nearly pinning his rival, Littlefield of Malverne. We’ll admit it isn’t a very good showing but you watch our smoke next year. Page forty-four Girls Track Another successful season appears likely, according to the coach, Mrs. Barber. Among the members of last year’s undefeated team who are returning are: Molly Pastor, captain and high scorer last year; Lucille Goss, winner of the 50 and 75 yard dashes in the county meet in 1932 and 1933; Lillian Frost and Breda Gleason. There are also some new girls who may turn into real “finds”. Mr. Dodd again expects to have a successful baseball season. With over half of the players who won eight out of twelve games last year, returning, and several likely newcomers on hand, the chances for the Class “A C ham-pionship seem great. Among the veterans who will form the nucleus of the team are: George Kirk and Harry Fredman. pitchers: Jerrv Cohn, catcher: “Buddy” Sherwin at shortstop: George Robertson at third base; and “Red” Hepburn in the outfield. The girls have organized a baseball team this year, and Mrs. Barber, the coach, expects to build a good team around Nancy Giordano. Lillian Frost. Breda Gleason, Eleanor Koch, and Beatrice Ronis. Although there are no veterans from last year's team in school, a large number of newcomers, headed by Dorothy Gluck, are on hand, and a successful season is looked for.
