In its brief course lie all the Verities And all the Realities Of your Existence: The Bliss of Growth The Glory of Action The Splendor of Beauty: For Yesterday is but a Dream And Tomorrow is only a vision: But Today, well lived. Makes every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope. Look well, therefore, to this Day! Such is the Salutation of the Dawn. —From the Sanskrit Salmon, why do you struggle so; Continually Fighting currents, Climbing waterfalls. Dodging rocks. Resisting fishermen ' s flies? All seems so vain, so hopeless; Yet you struggle on. And finally attaining The stream ' s upper realms. The source, the acquiescence, . . . You spawn. Struggle ended. Energy gone. You die. What have you accomplished? 6 A STUDENT S PLEA Don ' t give us false logic— we ' ve got ears Don ' t mumble if you don ' t know— we can tell Don ' t treat us like children— we can work Expect us to be earnest— we have enough feeling Don ' t teach us if you don ' t like us— we won ' t learn. A struggle for thoughts, a battle to put them on paper. Crumpled paper, leaking pen, and muddled mind. Once the ideas get on paper, they ' re no longer what you want to say. How to communicate with people through scribbled black lines on white paper. How to make someone understand how you feel. 8 If he is wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind. —Kahlil Gibran. 9 Concentrate. Let every cell in your body Every atom of your brain Every pulse of your plasma Absorb The principals of edification. 10 1 1 Mind sized marbles Expand in light Not heat 12 George J. Allietta You didn ' t have to take a math course to know Mr. Allietta. He could be found wherever he was needed. Always busy, yet always available to anyone who wanted his help. In school and out of school he was teacher and coach but at all times, and most important of all, he was our friend. 13 The omnipresent cheering squad, there whether the bleachers were full or nearly empty. There, to give the team spirit. To be frost-bitten, to be drenched. To be disappointed or exhilarated. Their compassion was rewarded, for the victory or defeat was always partly theirs. 14 t On exchange concerts The band excelled while Expertly executing Shostakovich 16 17 Music is your special friend . . . 18 20 If there is one sport that epitomizes physical struggle at LHS, it must be football. Under its festive exterior of blaring bands, cheering fans, marching girls, and bouncy cheerleaders, the thud in the half-back ' s belly as the linebacker ' s helmet meets its mark is barely heard. Whether it be a fifty yard pass or a two-yard run, the sound of clashing helmets and bodies remains the same. A heartbreaking early season loss to Bourne ruined hopes of a third straight Capeway conference championship. The disheartened Clippers rode out the season to a 5-3 record, good for a third place tie in a tough league. 21 w FOOTBALL SCOREBOARD Capeway Conference - Tied for third place Won 5, Lost 3 LHS . . . 45 Canton ... .6 LHS . . . 35 Wareham . . . . ... .6 LHS . .. 7 Bourne ... 15 LHS . . . 21 Somerset . . . . ... .6 LHS . . . 14 D-Y ... 30 LHS . . . 37 Dartmouth . . . ... 20 LHS . ..28 Fairhaven . . . . ... .6 LHS . . . 28 Barnstable . . . ... 40 22 Field hockey doesn ' t appeal to many, for it lacks glory. But the field hockey player knows the feeling of sharp fall air, grasp of the wooden stick, freedom of running. These blend into her subconscious, as she concentrates on the stick-to-stick fights, breathing, and keeping her legs in motion. Glory is rarely hers at the end, but she gets the reward of weary muscles and the luxury of breathing freely at last. FIELD HOCKEY SCOREBOARD WON LOST TIED 2 8 3 23 Soccer. The globe ' s most popular sport remains alien in a hand-orientated country. Father of all men, keeper of dreams and dreamers, Look upon us in our nightmare; This madness of war; Where fathers, sons, friends, and brothers — seized by the multiplied evils of nations, blinded by rage and fear, Offer up the beauty of their youth with a silent cry in a dreamless night. Look in mercy on us in our shame and sorrow. Rev. Robt. A. Mayo 40 “Do you sit, and do you wonder, will the world ever change? And just how long will it take to get it all rearranged? Tell me why these things are still the same. Tell me why no one can seem to learn from mistakes. — Steppenwolf A young boy brought up by a poverty-stricken family in the heart of Hong Kong was adopted by the senior class. Lo Chun Fai: a name for the millions of nameless who lack what we have in abundance. 41 The time has come, the Walrus said, To talk of many things: Of shoes— and ships— and sealing wax— Of cabbages and kings. —Lewis Carroll 42 All we are 44 saying, is give Peace a chance. ' V 46 . . . to AFS parties and graduation rehearsals there was communication, whether silent or spoken. 47 48 49 Having Fun While Helping Dthers 52 The student council and honor society felt the need of change in a changing society. 53 Space Odyssey: 69 Cybernaut stood erect on the launching pad. That was four years ago. The diversified icarian mariners have managed the ship well. But now A time warp has been found, And the fleet ship will escape To another dimension. Oh, the adventures of the solar system! Guided by the stars and solar charts, the crew Aided a floundering king of the Orient, Assembled an asteroid auction, Chose an interplanetary council, Prepared a feast for Epicurean gods, And blew their minds dancing in chimerical paradise. But all these are superficial. Herculean tasks were Battling with the formidable Copea ns, (Win or lose) Resisting the sirens of planet Lawrence, And upon conquering our solar system Moving on to challenge other galactic champions. Meanwhile, all Combat the books of Indoctrination. Most fall to defeat. Few receive inspiration. Still, much and many Will continue untold and unnoticed. Some shall cry, Give me truth, For am weary of pondering And listening to shrieking comets. Some shall ponder and listen until they die. Some shall just cry. But in the end all will graduate. To fanciful visions? To reality ? To higher echelons? Maybe graduation will be only physical? Who knows? Ask him. For as we trip along, shooting for stars. Somewhere an empty space awaits us In the land of the Established. 54 55 Put forth their sons to seek preferment out: Some to the wars, to try their fortune there; Some to discover islands far away; Some to the studious universities. —Shakespeare 56 We can ' t return; We can only Look behind from where we came And go round and round In the circle game. 57 “The Importance of Being Ernest — preparations before the major senior production. 59 A rainbow array of graceful gowns and immaculate tuxedos swayed to an unfamiliar type of music. The elegant queen reigned over the Ocean Splendor . In the soft light and with the sweet music, no one would believe that a little while before, all that was now beautifully ornamented had been so plain. The undersea palace and all its arrayed inhabitants had undergone metamorphosis. 60 61 Class Day. Mass, tomorrow, will you do it? Mrs. A, my books all fell on the floor and I can ' t get into class without a pass, will you write one out? She always seems to have an answer to everyone ' s plea. A ready supply of college board registration forms, scholarship applications, and sound advice. When you are thrown out of class, or have detention, flunk a test. or get 200 on your college boards, her warm smile and gentle comments at least assuage, if not find a solution for, the problem. For four years, with or without our knowledge, she has helped every one of us, whether arranging a class schedule, averaging grades, or sending out the all-important transcripts. And when Lawrence High School is in the past, Mrs. Alexander will be remembered by all as a warm friend. 101 102 Administration Mr. Dewitt C. Jones; Principal Russell B. Marshall; Mr. John B. Few realize what it takes to train a new staff to produce a yearbook, to gently push those concerned to produce throughout the year, and finally to get them to complete the book. There is much frustration and disappointment involved. Yet our advisor, Mr. McKee, manages to treat each staff with renewed considera- tion and patience. He has taken a thankless job, but in so doing has helped create a unique and important part of LHS. 157 ry Patrons Jake ' s Bar and Lounge Roger ' s and Mel ' s Gulf Station North Falmouth Gulf Station Mr. and Mrs. Merton L.
