Cavanaugh, Head of the Science Depart- ment, represents an inter- mediate stage between the hominess of some high school teachers and the detachment of college professors — the science student’s springboard to college. He presents his courses by lecture and experi- ment, and it is left up to the student to study and master the material. Of course he is not stingy with extra help, but only on the student’s time. Mr. Cavanaugh demanded accom- plishment. Math teachers were Messrs. Ernest D’Ombrain, DeWitt C. Jones, III, Theodore Bentinnen, Robert Griffin, George J. Allietta, Tony Casso, Mrs. Dale Simmons. Science, Math Departments Taught Specialized Skills Math at LHS was this year highlighted by the return and all-too-soon departure of Mr. Joseph Bradley, well-remembered from our illustrious junior high years. Mr. Bradley proved to be his same old self, complete with the biting wit and sardonic good humor that vitalized his classes five and six years ago. It was this wit which acti- vated the usual student’s reluctant interest in math, and it is this personality for which he will be well remembered. Miss McKenzie supervised dissections. 13

Social Studies and Art Developed Perspectives Mr. F. K. Baker, Jr. challenged apathy. Herodotus chose “history,” the Greek word for in- vestigation to name man’s effort to understand his past. Mr. Baker is an investigator, seeking within the frame- work of existing knowledge to ask and answer questions about the past. He presents a balanced, comprehensive history of the United States, drawing on economic, soci- ological, and psychological perspectives as well as the standard political viewpoint of historical events. This teacher sees each student as a potentially re- sponsible adult, and accordingly teaches him of his rights and his heritage. Mr. Sydney C. Roberts ran His- Mr. Alan D. Craig completed final year tory Department. as teacher. LHS art department was this year revitalized with the arrival of two new art teachers, Mr. John Stevens and Mr. Theodore Landry. Their impact on the art classes could be seen in the work the students were producing. George Williams was encouraged in his work with the radical series of “mystic eyes,” and other students produced works of equal potency. Art is not a static field of study, and serious students need a teacher who is aware of the contemporary scene in order to express themselves in contemporary terms; this they found in both Mr. Landry and Mr. Stevens. 12 Mr. Theodore Landry encouraged artists’ individu- ality.

Business and Special Departments Perform Unique Miss Lucille Odgen, Department Leader Mrs. Gertrude Bezdaris Mr. John J. Farrell Mrs. Eleanor Osborne Functions The Business Department combines “heart” and learning with great effec- tiveness. Mrs. Eleanor Osborne, who teaches office practice, bookkeeping I, typing and personal typing, compassion- ately puts her students at ease. This, and her efficiency (demonstrated by punctual typing of “Intelligencer” material) pro- claim her excellence as a teacher. Typing, stenography and transcription are taught by Miss Lucille Ogden, who is always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. With patience and understanding, she draws students as close to the subject as to herself. Miss Barbara Kenney, Librarian, surrounded by faithful stu dent staff. Mr. George L. Moses has brought to the LHS journalism course many years of professional experience. He has a sharp sense of what makes important news, an acute feel of the fast pace of the newspaper business, and he imparts his sensitivity to his students. It is Mr. Moses’ drive which gets the Student In- telligencer out each week. Mr. Moses edited “Intelligencer” before press runs.
