CADEMICS ACADEMICS • ACADE Intellectual excellence is gained by effort inspired by a hunger for knowledge. Only when this desire for education is fully developed will the student be able to ad- vance with his society, long after there are no teachers to prod him along. A teacher exists mainly to en- courage students to extend their desire to the point where they need only be shown the proper course of exploration. A teacher also gives his students the tools to examine productively the paths they are shown ; he teaches them methods of analysis, criticism and experimentation so they may en- quire significantly for them- selves.

Most visible member of the administration is Mr. Marshall, from whom come the deci- sions drastically affecting LHS. Mr. Mar- shall is mediator between students and town. He interprets and enforces school committee rules, as well as receiving parents’ and stu- dents’ complaints and suggestions. Mr. Mar- shall manifests a sympathy and understand- ing derived from many years of experience. Aiding him are Task Leaders DeWitt C. Jones, III and John B. Quick, who give valuable assistance in the daily administra- tion by handling most punishments and as- suring the proper functioning of the intricate new systems of student accounting. Principal Russell B. Marshall and Superintendent Harry S. Merson confer. Administration and Guidance Direct Student Business Mrs. Harryette Alexander received many, many flowers, Mr. Ugo J. Tassinari Perhaps the warmest spot at LHS is the Guidance office, which pro- vides companionship, guidance and incentive for the searching student. Mr. Ugo Tassinari treats with equal concern personal problems and those of career and college placement. Mrs. Harryette Alexander, secretary to the office, is a confidant and soft shoulder to all. Mr. Dewitt C. Jones, III attacked pupil accounting problems. 10
