RICHARD GERACE - PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR JUDY LEBLANC - PRODUCTION! EDITOR RICHARD LATIMER -ART EDITOR R.C. MC KEE - ADVISOR JOHN FARRELL- BUSINESS ADVISOR LAWRENCIAN SilSjgj ■m CONTENTS DEDICATION MESSAGES ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS UNDERCLASSMEN SENIOR ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS A JOINT We will remember you always for your assistance and willingness to help in times of need. In your first year of teaching at LHS, you came to the aid of the Key Club as its advisor. We also note with gratitude the way you pitched in to plan and decorate for both the annual Snowball and Junior -Senior Prom as well as your problem-solving skill at class meeting. We will be reminded of your words of wisdom both in and out of class and the enlivement of our History classes which made them interesting. Most of all, we will recall your friend- ship, which was given willingly at all times, particularly this year when you became a guidance counselor and recommended us to schools. Therefore, we the Class of 1962 dedi- cate this yearbook to you, Mr. Douglas C. Hunt, in great appreciation for all that you have done for us . ftiuVitf ■ DEDICATION Many factors influence a student ' s academic career. Among them are his seriousness of purpose, scholastic environment and over -all superior leadership. It means much to a young person to know that there is someone who is devoted to the task of guiding and advising him. You have done all this and more for us. Without you we would not have achieved our present status as graduates from high school, a position of which we are truly proud. For these reasons and innumerable others, we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our year- book to you, Mr. Russell B. Marshall, Principal of Lawrence High School, in partial acknowledgment of your service to us and others like us over the course of the last twenty -five years. r imT 1 Nor could one readily improve upon the geography of Falmouth, which is pictured here, as a setting for good learning; for here, by the fertile sea shore, nature itself is teacher, quietly and sometimes dramatically revealing to the curious the beauty and infinite variety of her cycles of ebb and flow, suggesting man ' s place in a precarious balance. To urge these awarenesses of people to care for and of a fair land to cherish is part of the work of the school -- that out of the awareness may arise a will to serve. But the school has other busi- ness also, which, since it is only implied in this book, is here reaffirmed: to teach the keys to communication, so that the accumulated experience of all men of insight may, in some measure if you will, be made yours. It is further the school ' s business to give practice in applying this ex- perience in some rational way to your own lives and to the problems of your time. This, of course, is YOUR business as long as you shall live, and of this, above all things, we want this book to be a reminder. Harry S. Merson, Superintendent of Schools We read today the results of many studies that have been made. These studies cover a wide field of activity. One of the more recent studies was made of normal adolescents. The subjects were competent high school seniors soon to enter college. Their chief characteristic: a willingness to accept the challenge of change. This means that these young people have adopted a positive attitude toward things that are new. They meet new experiences as something desir- able, exciting and rewarding and something to be welcomed, not viewed as things to worry and get upset about or to avoid. Amother characteristic: to be active and willing to face the task of transition. This characteristic could be reflected in the way young people assume responsibility for making preparations for going to college or to work. Furthermore, these seniors took pleasure in solving problems; in figuring things and mastering them; they viewed change as part of a continuous process of growing up and maturing. They set for themselves realistic goals, a practice that provides them with a cushion against possible future disappointments. To the young men and young women of the Senior Class at Lawrence High School this is a description of the normal teenager equipped to face the future to recognize and deal with his and her own problems. If each of you manages to develop his attitudes and skills along the lines suggested, I am certain that as you grow into adulthood, you will not only solve your own problems but that you can help solve some of the vital and perplexing problems facing the world. Russell B. Marshall, Principal But the most exciting wonder is that so many diverse people from so many unrelated places found their way to immor- tality between the covers of a small -town high school year- book. Understanding the forces behind this mystery would be the stuff of an education. The list of the names of your birth-places is like a roster of the states, and your features in the pictures in this book and your names reveal that this class has cousinship through its members with a goodly representation of the peoples of the earth. Indeed, had we sought for you companions from whom to discover both the oneness and the delightful diversity of humankind, we might hardly have chosen better. For you, this book will always be the stuff of memories; for your grandchildren, it will become a source of delight and wonder ( Was grandpa every really so young? Where did grandma get that hair-do? ) ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 4 ADMINISTRATION RUSSELL B. MARSHALL Principal, Lawrence High School B.S. Bridgewater State College M. Ed. All students are rated and selected by members of the faculty. Juniors and seniors who have maintained an average of 85 or better for one year prior to election are eligible for membership. Total membership may not exceed more than 15% of of the class enrollment. These new members were inducted at a buffet supper at the Congregational Church this year. The speaker for the evening was Major Norman Traverso, who lectured on Spain. As Presi- dent of the society, Ted Amaral presided at all group meetings . Other officers were Mike Kinney, Vice-President, and Margaret Ann Canty, Secretary. Mr. James C. Kinney served as Faculty Advisor. Nine of the seventeen senior members were elected during the junior year. They were Ted Amaral, Margaret Ann Canty, Mae Childs, Ellen Christian, Eleanor DeMello, Sheila Hayes, Mike Kinney, Ellen Langenheim, and Bonnie McGilvray. The eight members chosen this year were Arthur Baker, Barbara Barstow, Maureen Cavanaugh, Arthur Feagles, Judy Le- Blanc, Beverly Marks, Peter Roncetti, and David Williamson (not pictured). Seventeen juniors were also selected this year. This group includes: David Boehk, Beverly Burwell, Diana Cook, Sandra Cooke, Beth Fling, Derna Grenga, Carlotta Hayes, George Kahler (not pictured), John Knispel, Todd Merrill, Brad Moses, Eleanor Nace, Barbara Nichols, Paul Olenick, Robert Robbins, Claire Schlepark, and Diane Smith. 38 STUDENT COUNCIL President -- Arthur Feagles Vice-President -- Beverly Burwell Treasurer -- Barbara Garrett Senators -- Arthur Baker, Edward Mello, Michael Mello, Barbara Steinberg Representatives -- Theodore Amaral, James M. The annual Country Fair started a productive year for the Look- out Club. This project netted over $200.00 which went for the club’s scholarship, donations for the March of Dimes, cheer- leaders ' uniforms, and LAW- RENCIAN Fund. Each of the meetings was dif- ferent and interesting. Mr. Rus- sell B. Marshall spoke on char- acter; Miss Olga Nichols gave instructions on skin and hair care; and Mrs. William Met- calf showed slides of and dis- cussed her trip to Europe. For social events, the club rented the Rod and Gun Club’s lodge for a slumber party and took a trip to Boston to see the Ice Follies. Since the beginning of the school year, the Key Club has engaged in soliciting for the Heart Fund, the March of Dimes and the Cape Cod United Fund. This past Christ- mas, members braved freezing tempera- tures to sell Christmas trees and to dis- tribute food baskets to needy families. As a result of these activities, the LHS or- ganization is the only club in New England which has won first or second prize every year in the Key Club New England District Convention competition. The LHS Club was instituted by Mr. John Romiza, whose foresight and careful guid- ance were instrumental in placing ours among New England ' s most active mem- bers of Key Club International. This en- viable tradition is being perpetuated under the capable leadership of Mr. Douglas W. Hunt, Faculty Advisor, and Kiwannis Ad- visors, Dr. Edward H. Fitch and Mr. Max Steinberg. KEY CLUB FUTURE TEACHERS The Future Teachers Club acquaints students who are interested in teaching with the profes- sion. This year ' s program con- sisted of speakers, field trips to colleges, and the teaching of younger stu- dents in grades one through eight. Socially, the FTA held skating parties, a lunch- eon with other Cape chap- ters of the FTA, and a beach party at the end of the school year. OFFICERS President Lorraine Weeks Vice -President Carol Ballentine Secretary Mary Beth Studley Treasurer Claire Schlepark Advisor Miss Catherine Marshall FUTURE NURSES Remember the pros and cons of nursing? Now the Future Nurses Club helps high school girls to make up their minds by exploring the op- portunities and requirements of careers in nursing. A typical program for the club includes infor- mative, bi-weekly meetings. Other activities comprise field trips to various hospitals and schools of nursing. The members help the Red Cross Blood Bank and work at Tobey and Cape Cod Hospitals at least once every month. One or two meetings a year are planned for social- izing, teas, dinners, picnics and round -robin get-togethers with other FNA clubs. ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS Senior Chorus is composed of students from the freshman through the senior classes. It has met every seventh period Mondays and Wednesdays to re- hearse songs to be presented before school and town audiences. The group has performed at Open House at LHS, at PTA meetings, and at Christmas time on the Village Green. Highlighting commencement week presentations was the singing of Climb Every Mountain at graduation. The orchestra has practiced every week in the auditorium and has participated in various music festivals, including the New England Music Festival, Cape Cod Music Festival, and local festivals. Recently, $1, 000 worth of music has been donated to the group. President --Robert Hague Vice-President--William Jenkins Secretary- -Susan Gordon Librarian - -Penny Smoller 44 OPERATOR ' S CLUB The Operators Club, under the supervision of Mr. James Kalperis, is one of the few or- ganizations whose importance can be appreciated by every faculty member and student. The members not only run the audio-visual equipment but also assume responsibility for these invaluable teaching aids. Without the Operators Club, it would be extremely difficult to sup- plement class work with tapes movies and records. i 45 STUDENT INTELLIGENCER Editor Ellen Langenheim Associate Editor Sandra Cooke Assistant Editors Pat Frank Margaret A. Moses, and aid of THE FALMOUTH ENTERPRISE. Every member of the class wrote one story a week for the paper. On Mondays a group of students from the class went to the ENTER- PRISE office, edited copy and corrected type for the edition of the paper on Tuesday. The INTELLIGENCER, member of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, was founded by Dr. Mary Robb in 1948 .. In the fourteen years of its existence, the page has won three first place awards and three medalist awards; last year was the first time that the paper won a gold medal at the Columbia Scholastic Press Associa- tion Convention in New York. THE STU- DENT INTELLIGENCER competed in the category of senior high schools of 1,000 students or fewer in the Empire State com- petition. 46 The Editors Production Staff Liteiaryt taff LAWRENCIAN As the editors of the 1962 LAWRENCIAN, we would like to express our gratitude to the following people who went above and beyond the call of duty in our behalf. Mr. Marshall, who recognized the importance of a successful yearbook; Messrs. Curtis McKee and John Farrell, our advisors, whose assistance has made our publication a success; MelvinHoward, our ener- getic photographer, who gave his time, but more important, his imagination, to taking the myriad of pictures; The Fal- mouth Publishing Company for donating several football, basketball and soccer pictures; THE STANDARD TIMES for the picture of President Kennedy; Mr. Hugo Poisson for the town scenes; the merchants of Falmouth, who supported the book through their ads; and members of the junior class who assisted the various staffs. To help defray the cost of the trip, members sold United Nations Christmas cards and cook- books. The club sponsored an assem- bly on world peace with Harry Hollins as the guest speaker. Six members of the club were selected to attend the Fifth East Coast Model United Nations Conference. It was a long and tedious task to raise the $15, 000. necessary to support them, but by hard work and sheer determina- tion, the band and majorettes raised the entire sum. They sponsored a talent show, raffled off a car, held paper drives, etc. New uniforms were pur- chased with a portion of the $15, 000. ' AULD LANG SYNE •M THANKSGIVING DAY PROGRAM . . . After their return, Principal Marshall received a letter commending the stu- dents with regard to their dress, be- havior and over -all appearance. FALMOUTH WELCOMES THE BAND HERE COMES THE BAND! CHEERLEADERS Lawrence, Lawrence, hear our cry, V-I-C-T-O-R-Y. Victory is the cry of all loyal LHS supporters and leading the fans in their cheers are the pr etty, spirited LHS cheerleaders. The cheerleaders were lead by Dale Grissom and Marg Pacheco until Dale moved to Florida with her family early in the basketball season. This year the cheerleaders wore new basketball uniforms. The uniforms were maroon jumpers with four white pleats in a flared skirt. These girls supported and gave our boys encouragement at all football and basketball games, and at rallies, trying to create school spirit. They were driven to all away games by their advisor, Mr. Robert Morris. PEP SQUAD The first pep squad on Cape Cod was started by Regina Pacheco and Jean Donnelly in 1958 to aid the cheerleaders and fans in rooting their team on to victory. That squad, unfaltering and immaculate, graced the LHS stands. t All forty -five girls in grades 9 through 12 are selected . on these basic standards: good posture, marching Pfck- ability, rhythm, personality, and general ap- 4 ' pearance. The key to the squad ' s success was its ability to provide the needed bench strength. When Fred Winling was injured, Brad Fish moved to tackle, and two 145 pound guards, RickGerace and Tom Momz, bolstered the middle of the line. Early in the Somerset game, Mike Kinney was sidelined. Joe Ingram took over the center spot and gave it his all. Mike Lopes, the other first string tackle, alternated at end with Ralph Jonas and sure -handed Mike Finnell. The first year was extremely successful from the standpoint of team-building, but the meet record was not encourag- ing. However, the second year marked the beginning of a long streak of dual meet victories. These winning ways lasted until this year when New Bedford High dealt the Clippers their first loss in more than two and one -half seasons. This year ' s scoreboard registered eight dual meet wins, one loss, and three combined meet victories. The harriers also won the Catholic Memorial Invitational, The Southeastern Massachusetts Invitational, and the Class D State Championship as well as the League Cham- pionship. Culminating a fine season, the Clippers placed fifth in the New England Championship held at the University of Connecticut. 59 SOCCER Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Falmouth Yarmouth Chatham Nauset Sandwich Barnstable Harwich Tabor Academy Yarmouth Chatham Nauset Sandwich Barnstable Harwich New Bedford Tabor Academy Coach Toran, Co-captains Araujo and Scharff. The keys to this year ' s success were desire and brains. The team played its heart out in every game and many times it was due only to heads up thinking and smart strategy that won many a game. The presentation, BOOKS AND CROOKS, was a comedy involving two bank robbers who take over a high school for two days. Art Feagles had the task of portraying both Principal Henly and the bank robber. Gary Kruger kept the audience laughing as Francis, the second hood- lum. Mimi Podgoursky had the role of Miss Hamilton, Mr. Henly ' s extremely nervous private secretary. Art Baker and Diane Lamothe were two high school steadies, as were Chuck Sheehan and Alice DeSouza. Phil Tavares played the part of the bank president. Carol Ballantine and Dave Reardon amused the audience as a pair of anxious band parents. Rick Gerace took the part of Lt. Shaw, sent to solve the mystery, when Fred Winling hurt his knee and landed in a cast. Peg Corey and a few band members rounded out the cast. 1 ‘JK MOST ATHLETIC MR.
