Marshall Principal to the members of the class of 1958 Congratulations! Yon have attained a goal that I am sure has been in your minds for a long time. You are living in exciting times. The exploration of space and the development of rockets were the dreams of over-active imaginations just a few short years ago. Today, they are a reality. You are observers today of a type of pioneering, somewhat different than your history books describe. You are living in a time of new exploration and you, as members of this graduating class, may well have a part in the final results. The next decade may boast of developments far beyond the accomplishments of the past dozen decades, and you young people are going to play a part in them. Again, 1 congratulate you and wish for you that the years ahead will be challenging and exciting and that each one of you will meet the challenge of your time as did the pioneers of old. 12 GRADUATES SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS John Patrick Dougherty John Barry Souza . Susan was chosen by her classmates because she best exemplifies the principles of loyalty, honor, and service. Susan has been a very active member of the class of 1958. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, Daisy Chain, and secretary of the class in her sophomore year. This year Susan was co-editor of the Lawrencian and the Student Intelligencer, co- captain of the girls’ basketball team, treasurer of Lookout Club, and was selected as the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. After graduation Susan is planning to attend Chil- dren’s Hospital in Boston to become a registered nurse. This year the Smythe Honor Roll Award was present- ed to John P. Dougherty, who best exemplifies loyalty, honor and service. Jack’s many activities and excellent work, has indeed shown that he is deserving of this award. He was a member of the National Honor Society and President of his class in his freshman, sophomore and senior years. Jack was class marshal and an active member of Key Club also the secretary of the New England district of Key Club. He was President of Student Council and received the D.A.R. Award for excellence in History, in his junior year. Jack plans on a college career upon graduation. Our sincere wishes in the future go with him. SMYTHE HONOR ROLL BABE RUTH AWARDS Every year it is a tradition of Lawrence High Seniors to choose a boy and a girl from the graduating class who best exemplifies good sportsmanship, on and off the field. This year the honor of the Babe Both Award goes to Susan Branden and Jack Peterson. This year Susan Braden received the Babe Ruth Award as she is the girl chosen by the Senior Class who best exemplifies sportsmanship. Susan was an active member of her class, during her four years at L.H.S. She was a member of the basketball squad throughout high school, and was elected co-captain in her senior year, an active member in the Lookout Club for three years and was elected treasurer in her Senior year; Sue was the co-editor of the Student Intelligencer and the Lawrencian, a member of the Daisy Chain, a Class Officer, and a member of the National Honor Society, besides participating in many out side activities. After graduation, Susan plans to attend Children’s Hospital in Boston, and hopes to become a registered nurse. The class of 1958 is proud to present the Babe Ruth Award to Jack H. Peterson. As the senior superlative implies. Jack was the most athletic boy in the class. He has been a varsity letterman in football, basketball and baseball all through high school. During his senior year, he was elected co-captain of the football squad and captain of the baseball and basketball teams. Jack also enjoyed his four years’ membership in the L.H.S. Key Club and his position of Boys’ Sports Editor of the Lawrencian and the Intelligencer. After graduation Jack is planning to attend Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass. 43 Smartest Susan Braden, Richard Robbins Most Artistic Bonnie Bray, Walter Zylinsk Best Dancers Bruce Peterson, Cricket Bigelow Most Popular Rosemary Bevacqua, Jack Dougherty Rosemary Bevacqua, Michael Murray Most Musical Judy Roberts, David Kay Most Bashful Mary Cadeira, Most Industrious Beverly Finberg, Jack Dougherty Most Sophisticated Priscilla Helm, Gorden Carey Most Athletic Susan Braden, Jack Peterson Best Leaders Beverly Finberg, Jack Dougherty Cleverest Beverly Finberg, Joel Peterson Best Dressed len Armstrong, Gordon Carey Best All Around Rosemary Bevacqua, Bob Ozment First row: Susan Miller, Nancy Rapp, Rosemary Bevacqua, Judy Roberts, Nancy Boff, Patricia Ferreira, Sandra Netto, Jerrie Gill, Fay Gentry, Betty Alves, Beverly Cash, Brenda Hines. The staff, under the supervision of the editors, Susan Braden and Beverly Finberg, have prepared pictures, copy, and art work to present to Lawrence High School an enjoyable and well styled yearbook. The considerable work of preparing, selling, distributing the Lawrencian has been a pleasant experience for the staff, but could not have been achieved without the supervision of the editors and the comments of our adxisor, Mr. Wasseth. Many hours of effort have been employed to produce John Thomas Lawrence and the Law- rencian. 46 SENIOR CLASS PLAY A highlight of our Senior year was our great theatrical produc- tion, “The Curious Savage,” which allowed us to work together closely, gaining friendship with classmates. As great as the bonds that were created with one another were the good times and ability to work together as a class. Our Senior play will always remain a pleasant hallmark of our high school days. CAST This year the class of 1958 presented the three-act comedy, “The Curious Savage” at the Memorial Auditorium, December 16 and 17. The cast was composed of Bonnie Bray, Bill Fenstermaker, Rosemary Bevaqua, Jack Dougherty, Beverly Finberg, Frances Spencer, Judy Roberts, Diane LaFreniere, Tom Hill, George York, and Carl Fredrickson. The play was tremen- dously successful and the class reaped a seventy-five dollar profit. Directing the play was Mr. Fraher and he was capably assisted by Carl Fredrickson. The set and scenery was designed by Mr. DeWitt C. Jones III and his backstage crew which was composed of the following: chairmen, George York and Daniel Callahan, Jennifer Gang, Diane LaFreniere, Joan Hazelton, Cricket Bigelow, Nancy Rapp, Helen Sullivan, Sandra Smith, Irving Chase, John Kayajan, John Netto, Jerry Lumbert, Gordon Carey, Bruce Peterson, Cecil Costa, David Simoneau, Peter Dalzell, John Souza, Jack Peterson, Russ Mohr, and Jon Doukas. The class of 1958 expresses its sincerest thanks and appreciation to Mr. Sunderman for his help in printing our covers, to Mrs. Osborne for her help in printing our programs, to Mr. Fraher for his patient direction, and to Mr. Jones for his excellent designing. 47 First row: Beverly Finberg, Rosemary Bevacqua, Bonnie Bray, Judy Roberts. YEARS IN REVIEW Do you remember when we finally called ourselves Freshmen? This was a memorable year in our high school career. We were determined to make the history of our class a success. “Ready, willing and able” was our motto. We tried to live up to this although we sometimes had our doubts. Our first money-making project was the Freshman Minstrel Show. The class showed its enthusiasm, bubbling over with talent. We even went so far as to secure the services of the ever popular “Crazy Legs Lizzy and Her Cool Chicks,” alias Joel Peterson and his “chickens.” Without the consistent guidance and direction of Miss Cornell and Mr. Roberts, our show would never have been possible. We made a sizeable profit of $314.47 which, to us, was a substantial sum of money to start us through the four years lying ahead. We sponsored a few dances throughout that year, but only one was outstanding, our Freshman Prom. You may remember how all the girls spent endless hours preparing for the big dance. Soon came the time to make our entrance into the hall. My, how dashing were the boys; and how lovely were the girls. Some in their first new pair of wobbly, high-heeled shoes. We could hardly recognize our high school friends in this new “grown up” role. Queen Cecelia Flora looked lovely, dressed in a coral gown and Walter Zylinski made a very debonair king. We shall never forget the science excursion 50 we made to Boston. One beautiful May morning two buses, anchored with eager students, departed from the school to visit Franklin Park Zoo and the Boston Science Museum. It wasn’t long before we were up to our necks in beans. We were Sophomores and engaged in mak- ing the annual Sophomore Bean Supper the best affair yet. Mrs. Barry gave us her full co-operation in planning the menu and cooking the delicious supper. After eating, entertainment was provided by the “talented members of our class. The best football rally this school had ever seen took place during this year put on by some of the members of our class. The girls donned in the boys’ uniforms certainly made “impressive” players and the boys in their short, maroon skirts made “adorable” cheer- leaders. By now we felt we could do something for our own enjoyment. After deep concentration by our entire class we came up with Twirp Week. A week was set aside where the girls had to do everything for the boys. This is now traditional at our school. Remember all those books they made us carry, girls! This week was climaxed by a “Sadie Hawkins Dance” at which time, penalties were imposed upon some of the girls for not abiding by the rules of Twirp Week. You can still hear that Hawaiian music which accompanied Susan Braden as she gave us her inter- pretation of a Hawaiian dancer, the most comical 51 penalty of the evening. To onr Sophomore year we said, “Aloha.” In the first part of our Junior year, we acquired our elegant class rings. For the glorious days that followed anyone could usually get a willing Junior to shake hands with him. Ring hand, of course! During this year we had two very successful dances, the Annual Snowball and the Junior-Senior Prom. The queen of the Snowball, Priscilla Sylvia, cer- tainly dressed like the theme, Winter Wonderland, in an exquisite white gown. Theme for the prom was Underwater Fantasy. These two affairs were expertly decorated by the artistic members of our class. After the Prom the P.T.A. gave us a delicious buffet dinner which was wholeheartedly welcomed by the famished students who attended this gala evening. We hardly realized the Junior year had gone by so quickly. September 6, 1957 was the glorious day we had all anxiously been awaiting. We had reached the top step of the ladder as far as our high school days were concerned. Now we were sophisticated Seniors. We were the first class in L.H.S. to use the center stairway previously used only by faculty and adult guests of our school. Our first project this year was to have all our “movie-star” pictures taken. Speaking of movie stars, our Senior Class Play “The Curious 52 Savage” was performed expertly by our more dra- matic members. Mrs. Osborne, Mr. Fraher, and Mr. Jones professionally led and guided us in this fabulous production. We also sponsored the De Rossi Accordian concert in the Memorial auditorium. By now we were buried in work, work, work, for our yearbook. As you can see it is the best one yet. The Junior-Senior Prom financed by the Junior Class eventually came. Magnificent decorating and the gaily attired couples provided an atmosphere of graceful enchantment. Our class day program made us all sad in remembering. The class Prophecy and Will made us realize that this was one of the last times we would all be together as a class. This year finally had come to its end. We had a wonderful time at our banquet, which not only fea- tured a sumptious dinner, but also saw members from our class give specialties reminiscent of Min- strel Show and Bean Supper. The climax of the evening was the giving out of Class Gifts. This prov- ed to be one of the most humorous and entertaining events of the evening. The saddest time in our lives came at our unforgettable graduation. The boys dressing in maroon robes and the girls in white robes was an innovation for our school. Some of us appeared rather complacent that night, while others with their eyes full of tears appeared sad to leave. “Alas, parting is such sweet sorrow”— to these four memorable years, the class of 1958 says— Sayonara! 53 HYMN OF LOYALTY O Lawrence High, we offer tribute to thee. Mentor and Guide, who led us on our way. Hold high the torch that lights us to our duty; We shall not falter when from thee we stray. O Lawrence High School, What’er betide, We still shall deem thee our Mentor and our Guide. 4 O Lawrence High, thine ancient mission serving. Create in us a spirit ringing true; Teach us to walk life’s pathway still unswerving; Ready to meet life’s problems, old and new. We shall be loyal, O Lawrence High, We shall be striving to keep thy banner high. 54 STUDENT ACTIVITIES 55 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Ronald Johnston President Henry Andrade Vice-President Jean McGilvray Treasurer John Rose Secretary Beverly Ball Girls’ Social Chairman Michael Williams Boys’ Social Chairman The annual Snowball which was sponsored by the Junior class was quite a success despite all the rushing around and the last minute changes which were seemingly characteristic of our class. The theme was “Fantasy In Blue” and our queen, Dorothy Cotton, carried out the color scheme with her beautiful blue gown. The juniors, known for abolishing annual affairs, held Lawrence High School’s first Smorgasbord. Each student was asked to donate a covered dish, and the supper was enjoyed immensely by all. Many ate until they could eat no more. The supper was a success. We would also like to add that neither our supper, not any other supper, would have been a success without the help of Mrs. Barry. The last social event sponsored by the juniors for the vear 1957-58 was the Junior-Senior Prom. As usual we went “in the hole” but there was fun, and everyone had a marvelous and moneyless time. The Sophomore Class commenced the year with the first dance, The Sock Hop, which we were honored to put on. Our class was the second class in L.H.S. to order class rings in our sophomore year. Our second class function for this year was the Sophomore Bean Supper which was received quite well by the rest of the school and the townspeople. Twirp-week was very successful but hard on the girls and the Sadie Hawkins dance at the end of the week concluded our class activities for the year. At the first class meeting they voted to have a dance with a rally preceding it by one week. The rally was very successful and the “Victory Dance” was enjoyed by all. The class then set to work on the Minstrel Show and the Prom. The Minstrel Show was enjoyed by everyone and the Prom proved a good time for all who attended. | BOSTON -73 b.b. ♦ First row: Rosemary Bevacqua, Eugene Andrews, Jack Dougherty, Beverly Finberg. The purpose of Key Club is to render service to the school and community. They have exhibited this objective in various instances throughout the school year. They have conducted such projects as paper drives, clothes drives, giving baskets of food to needy families at Christmas time, dances, candy sales, wel- ruie work, “tag days,” assemblies, and rallies. The club received an award from Parents Maga- zine and numerous other trophies for its work in buy- ing the school a $3,200 organ and conducting many projects too numerous to mention. 60 In the third year of existence, the Lookout Club, which consists of 25 girls, conducted a very successful year. The club, one of the most prominent activities, has endeavored throughout the year to help the school and community. They have purchased ten original cheerleading uniforms and sponsored a Pizza Supper and movie in November; this was a huge success. For a community project, the Lookouters spon- sored a March of Dimes Dance in January and were able to give $100 to this worthy cause. Various money-making projects were selling cokes at basketball games and town meetings, selling book- ends, and food sales. The club was also able to give a $100 scholarship to a deserving Senior. A round of applause is certainly deserved by this young club which has come a long way on the road of service and loyalty. LOOKOUT CLUB Rosemary Bevacqua Carolyn Jacoby .
