Fine ipci do the Wen, hers of the Clan of 1957 M Y best wishes to you as you leave Lawrence High School. You have been privileged to live in a country blessed with freedom. You have seen a group of students come into Lawrence High School this past year from their homeland, a country not blessed with free- dom, a land ruled by Communists. We have welcomed them to the school and community. As the Bible puts it, we are members of one another”. This is our way of Life. We must show our new citizens and the world a philosophy of faith: faith in ourselves and in others, faith in the ability of each person to improve and grow, faith in the decency of all men. This faith is fundamental if we are to preserve our way of Life. You as graduates face the future with faith and you face it unafraid. 11 Russell B. There is a sadness deep within our heart. When we look back, sweet memories we see. Oh, Lawrence High School, we shall miss thee. II Loyalty, Honor, Service you have taught; Highest ideals, into our hearts you’ve brought. Thy teachings true shall never, never end. Oh, Lawrence High School, our teacher and friend. 33 UT of the senior class every year, a boy and girl are chosen to have their names cast in bronze on the Henry Herbert Smythe Honor Roll. These people are chosen by their classmates because of their outstanding qualities of Loyalty. Honor, and Service. This year we proudly announce the additions of Judith Sheehan and John Cahoon to the Smythe Honor Roll. J nclitli )heeh an T HIS year the Smythe Honor Roll Award was presented to Judith Sheehan. The senior class elected Judy because she best ex- emplifies the school motto — loyalty, honor and service. Judy has always been an active member of the class and during her junior and senior year served as class secretary. She has also been a member of the National Honor Society, Daisy Chain, editor of the Lawrencian, and secretary of the student council. . At graduation Judy received an award from the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of the American History and is the first high school student in Massachusetts to receive this award. Judy is going to attend the Boston Uni- versity School of Nursing next year and hopes to be a registered nurse. J ohn C ah oon T HE Smythe Honor Roll Award, established by Henry Herbert Smythe, was presented this year to John B. Cahoon as rhe person who best typifies the ideals of loyalty, honor, and service. John was active athletically as well as schol- astically during his high school life, particularly in football, basketball and baseball. He re- ceived the Harvard Book Award in his junior year and was social chairman of the class in his senior year. After graduation John will attend Holy- Cross College. 34 Incite t uth It JpHE Babe Ruth Award, presented annually to a senior boy and girl who have best displayed good sportsmanship both on and off the field, is awarded this year to Barbara Van Ham and Philip Geggatt. Their names will be cast in bronze and added to the Babe Ruth Award Placque. Jj arlara l ? an - h am B Y the unanimous vote of her class this year’s Babe Ruth award was presented to Barbara VanHam. Barbara has been an active member of the class of 1957 during her four years at L H.S. She was elected co-captain of the girls ' basketball team in 1957 and a member of the squad for three previous years. She was also one of the pretty cheerleaders of whom Law- rence High is so justly proud. Barbara was secretary of the class in her sophomore year, treasurer of the Lookout Club in her junior year, and a member of both Daisy Chain and National Honor Society, besides participating in many other activities. After graduation Barbara plans to attend Becker Junior College where she will take a medical secretarial course. Pkihp e 99 a tt TJH1LIP Crosby Geggatt was this year ' s choice - ■ for the Babe Ruth award. Phil has been a letterman in football, baseball, and basketball for the past three years. But more than that, lie personifies the type of player for whom this award was created — a person who cares more about good sportsmanship than about victory. Recently he received several awards from the Booster’s Club for his athletic prowess and ideal sporting qualities. Phil is a sportsman in the true sense of the word and because of this he is well liked both by his teammates and classmates, who proved their liking for him by voting him most athletic ” in the Senior Super- lative poll. After graduation Phil plans to join the Army. 35 SMARTEST BEST ALL AROUND MOST POPULAR John Cahoon, Judy Sheehan Linda Collins, Larry Knapp Mary Lee Craig, Bill Armstrong MOST INDUSTRIOUS MOST MUSICAL CLEVEREST Bill Booker, Linda Collins Bob Hayward, Jane Souza Judy Sheehan, Larry Knapp WITTIEST BEST LOOKING BEST NATURED Mickey Moniz, Judy Sheehan Chris Bullock, Barbara Van Ham Mary Lee Craig, Joe Souza 36 BEST DANCERS MOST DRAMATIC MOST SOPHISTICATED Barbara Van Ham, John Lyons Jerry Roderick, Judy Sheehan Nancy Rioux, John Lyons BEST DRESSED MOST ATHLETIC MOST BASHFUL Bill Armstrong, Nancy Rioux Barbara Van Ham, Phil Geggatt Norma Ricketson, Sonny Simons BEST LEADERS Linda Collins, Chris Bullock CUTEST Jane Pacheco, Dana Dufur (Continued on page 62) MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Judy Sheehan, Chris Bullock 37 First rou l. to r.: John Cahoon, Rosalie Pimental, Mr. William Tow, Linda Collins, Douglas Poole, Pat Vidal, Marianne Costa, Barbara VanHam, Bob Parent. T HE Travel Club, consisting of forty-five members elected for its officers: President Vice President T reasurer Assistant Treasurer Secretary Assistant Secretary Douglas Poole Linda Collins Pat Vidal Bob Parent Barbara Van Ham Marianne Costa Under the direction of Colonel Tow, this club met every Friday during Activity Period. The purpose was to raise money for the long- awaited trip to Washington in April. After the club was completely organized, we began working on many important activ- ities. The first project which increased our treasury was the selling of refreshments at the home football and basketball games. We also sold coffee and cake to the Adult Education Classes every Tuesday night. Under the super- vision of the Travel Club mothers, we spon- sored a Card Party at the Recreation Building in February. The winner received lovely pot- ted plants and several door prizes were given away. This year the Town Meeting lasted for four nights and with much help from the mothers we sold refreshments during the inter- mission. Another very successful event was an auction at the Rec” in March, featuring Mr. Richard Bourne as auctioneer. The last of our money-making projects consisted of a Travel- ing Food Sale and selling name and address labels. The Travel Club expresses our sincere thanks and appreciation to our mothers who have helped us in so many ways to make a grand total of over $2,000. 39 ' AN a windy April morning a group of ' ' forty-five excited people congregated in front of LHS. about to start the first leg of the annual Washington trip. This was the cul- mination of the months of hard work on the part of the Travel Club in order to finance a large part of the trip. The four chaperones, Maj. and Mrs. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Barstow ( or Ma and Pa”, as they were affectionately termed), were al- most as excited as the group and as the stu- dents entered the bus, they counted noses for the first time. For the next six days we were off on a whirl wind tour in such places as New York, Washington, Virginia and Pennsylvania. The schedule is as follows: Thursday— by bus to Providence; by train to New York where we stayed at the Hotel New Yorker. We saw the Easter Show and ' Funny Face” at Radio City, and we toured NBC Studios. Friday — we left for Washington by bus, stopping off at Annapolis and arriving about 5 p.m. at the Hotel Raleigh. Saturday- — Sightseeing in Washington. Sunday — Sightseeing, church services. Vis- ited Mount Vernon in the afternoon. Monday — Left for Virginia and rode through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Visited the endless caverns at night. Tuesday — Left for York, Pennsylvania, stop- ping at the Gettysburg battlefield and Valley Forge. We stayed at the Yorktowne Hotel. On Wednesday we left for home. By this time we were all exhausted and glad to be heading back home. I N October, after due deliberation ( there were more candidates competing this year than any previous year), the Class of 1958 elected the following officers: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Girls Social Chairman Boys Social Chairman Eugene Andrews Robert Ozment Bonnie Grew John Souza Susan Miller Thomas Hill The Annual Snowball which was sponsored by the Junior class was quite a success despite all the rushing around and the last minute changes which are seemingly characteristic of our class. Everyone had an extremely good time and the decorations added so much to the eve- ning. This gala affair was topped off with the choosing of the 1956 Snowball Queen which was Priscilla Sylvia. On the eleventh of May the Juniors spon- sored the Second Annual Spaghetti Supper and Fair. The supper was very delicious. It consisted of spaghetti and meatballs ( which was a necessity of course), French bread, salad, coffee or milk, and ice cream. The juniors really worked hard to make this supper a suc- cess under the supervision of Mrs. Barry. The fair which followed the supper featured booths containing games of skill and many other in- teresting features. On the whole, the supper and fair proved very successful and all the Juniors enjoyed putting it on. The last social activity that was sponsored by the Juniors for the year 1956-57 was the Junior-Senior Prom. At this event we really out-did ourselves. The decorations were beau- tiful and the music was both sweet and solid, at any rate, everyone had a marvelous time. 52 i!i!i!;!i!i!i! !i!i!i!i!i!i!!!i!i! Soph onto re C(ci33 n ecus Seated l. to r. The highlights of the entertain- ment were two one-act plays. One play was Along Came Harriett.” The other play was The Lamp Went Out. Also, four Sophomore boys did a pantomime of the Minor Tones. There was also a fashion show in which the boys modeled the latest fashions. The Class of 59 was the first class to receive class rings in the Sophomore year. They did so as to have rings through their high school years. The class is very proud of their two letter- men, who are Henry Andrade for football, basketball, baseball and track, and Barry Pease for golf. On May 13 through 18 the Sophomore Class sponsored Twirp Week and on May 18 the class sponsored a Sadie Hawkins Dance. 55 Jredhman dlaSS n ewd Seated I. to r . : Jane Langenheim, George Bigelow, Christine Blake. When the final vote was tallied, the results were as fol- lows: President Vice President Secretary T reasurer Boy’s Social Chairman Girl ' s Social Chairman George Bigelow Wayne Van Ham Jane Langenheim Ted Benttinen Jack Sheehan Christine Blake The first social event sponsored by the class was the traditional Freshman Minstrel Show, which w ' as held on Friday, April 12, in the LHS Memorial Auditorium. This event was a tremendous success both artistically and finan- cially, and a great deal of the credit for this success goes to the many students who worked towards such a goal. With the money from the Minstrel Show the Class next sponsored the annual Freshman Prom, an event featuring lovely decorations, tremendous music, a large and enthusiastic attendance. With this sort of start to their high school career the Class of I960 is sure to be one of the governing forces around LHS in the years to come. 56 59 Kneeling l. to r. : Allen Barstow, Toe Souza, Bob Couto, Phil Geggatt, Richard Howard, Larry Knapp, Dana Dufur, George Cole, Head Coach Gaddis. O N Thursday, March 28, the Model Con- gress group, consisting of Susan Miller, Maureen Costa, Jon Doukas, John Souza, and Advisor Colonel Tow, left for Springfield, Massachusetts and the annual Model Congress Convention. Each member of the club had a bill, including readjustment of Postal Rates, money for atomic energy, reduction of the voting age to 19, and the right of franchise for D. C. The first two were passed. Previous to the trip, the group was coached in public speaking by Colonel Tow so that they would be prepared to defend their re- spective proposals. In Springfield they stayed at the American International College dorms, returning to Falmouth on Sunday. Everyone agreed that the trip was well worth the effort and contributed to an increase in poise besides being lots of fun. 71 First rou I. to r. : Brenton White, Jack Dougherty, Nancy Rioux, Bill Armstrong, Susan Hunziker, John Souza, Eugene Andrews. After being honored last summer at the Dallas International Convention by re ceiving an award for being the second ranking Key Club in the entire United States with 25 members or less, the club was quick to sponsor more of the worthwhile sendee projects for which it is so widely known. The officers for the past year were; President Vice President Secretary Treasurer William Armstrong John Souza Jack Dougherty Brenton White During the first part of the year the Club sponsored two outstanding drives. The first was a Clothes Drive for the benefit of the Falmouth Welfare Department. The toys col- lected in the November Annu al Toy Drive were repaired and given to the underprivileged children of Falmouth at Christmas. The most important project, though, for the first half of the school year was the purchase of forty- eight card tables for the school which were presented to the school at an assembly. These tables were bought for use at school proms since previously, the classes had to borrow from outside organizations. Among the three paper drives, the dances and the numerous other activities of the Club, the most noteworthy project was the sponsor- ing of a movie, the profits of which went to- ward the purchase of an S800 baseball pitching machine for the baseball team. The members of the Key Club of 1956 57, in the years to come, will be able to look back proudly at the outstanding accomplish- ments and chiefly the service projects which have benefited the school and town so greatly. Elected to office for the coming year are: President Vice President Secretary T reasurer John Souza Ronald Johnston Eugene Andrew’s David Simoneau Elected as Sweethearts to replace Susan Hun- ziker and Nancy- Rioux are Kathy Sullivan and Susan Miller. With a slate of officers as ex- perienced as this, the school and community can continue to expect the Key Club to live up to the reputation which it has already established. 72 cJ OoLout cu T HE Lookout Club conducted another suc- cessful year under the leadership of the 1956-57 officers who are: President Susan Hunziker Vice-President Rosemary Bevacqua Recording Secretary Diane LaFreniere Corresponding Secretary Carolyn Jacoby Treasurer Mary Lee Craig As money-making projects the club sold football pins and held regular traveling food sales. During the football season they spon- sored the successful Foot Ball” at the Recre- ation Building. Since Lookout is primarily a service club, the group, in co-sponsorship with the Key Club, held a March of Dimes Dance, the pro- ceeds of which were turned over to the polio campaign fund. The club also decided to spend the majority of its treasury for the purchase of mirrors for the girls’ rooms on each floor. The following officers were elected ; President Carol Cummings Vice-President Jack Dougherty Secretary Judy Sheehan Treasurer Linda Collins The first project of the Student Council was a mock national election in which the Repub- licans won by a landslide. On December 20 the council sponsored the Toyland Fantasy” for the benefit of needy children. Admission was one toy, and these toys were turned over to the Welfare Com- mittee for distribution. For the March of Dimes campaign the Student Council placed collection cards in each homeroom and gave a prize of candy bars for the first room to fill its card. They also passed containers around at the January 18 basketball game. At the request of Mr. Marshall, the coun- cil drew ' up new rules for smoking permission. They also discussed problems relevant to the school. George Bigelow, Jean McGilvray, Eugene Andrews, and Mary Lee Craig were delegates to the convention at Norton on December 3- With the help of Advisor Mr. Kinney, the council has again succeeded in its aim to promote better teacher-student relations. 75 ona tjk onor First row l. to r.
