IVIAINE .911 Memoriam The faculty and students of Lawrence High School were saddened to hear of the untimely death, on October 31, of Warren Wade Ir., a member of the Class of 1954, Warren was a quiet and conscientious young man, sincere in purpose, co- operative in spirit, and Willing to do his share in any undertaking that came his way. Gilley. - LAWRENCE 13 oLD TOWN 25 The Lawrence High Bulldogs traveled to Old Town on September 12 to play the Old Town Indians in the season 's first game for both clubs. Maurice Grenier scored early in the first period after taking a pass from quarterback Phil Pollard. ln the second period Phil Pollard sneaked across from the two yard line to tally the second touchdown for the Bulldogs. Although the Bulldogs scored two touchdowns, they were finally overcome by two touchdowns scored by the Indians in the second half. LAWRENCE 13 MADISON 14 The Lawrence Bulldogs dropped their second game of the season to Madison. It was a hard fought game. Outstanding for Lawrence in their bid for victory were Maurice Grenier and Arnold Grard. LAWRENCE 37 JOHN BAPST. 7 Lawrence quarterback, Phil Pollard, completed 13 out of 16 passes to lead the Lawrence Bulldogs to a smacking 37'7 victory over John Bapst. Maurice Grenier's long ground gains, along with a powerful defense and smooth offense, stopped the Crusaders cold. Leading 12-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs exploded in the second half to score 25 points, and the first victory in I8 long games. LAWRENCE O CONY 33 On Friday night, October 2, the Bulldogs traveled to Augusta to play the Cony Rams in the second night game of the season. I LAWRENCE O GARDINER 24 On Saturday, October Io, the Bulldogs of Lawrence played Gardiner in their ,second home game of the season and went to a defeat of 24-O, Outstanding on defense for Lawrence was our little veteran guard, Billy Keup, Maurice Grenier and Pete Dodge also played a fine game. LAWRENCE 6 BREWER 21 On Friday evening, October 16, the Bulldogs traveled to Brewer to play the Brewer Witches. As the half ended, the Brewer club was able to push over two touchdowns and made the extra points, the score standing 14-O. In the second half, Lawrence defenses stiffened to hold the Witches to one touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, end Don Bowman took a pass from quarterback Phil Pollard for the Bulldogs' score. On offense, co-captain Jerrold Michael and halfback Arnold Grard were standouts. LAWRENCE 6 SKOWHEGAN 24 On October 24 the Bulldogs played Skowhegan in their third home game of the season and were defeated 24-6. The first half was controlled by the Indians. ln the second half, however, the Bulldogs played them on even terms with each team scoring once. In the backfield the running of Bobby Bragg, Maurice Grenier, and Arnold Grard was sensational. The line play of co-captain Jerry Michael and Billy Keup was also brilliant LAWRENCE 7 WATERVILLE 13 On October 31 the Bulldogs traveled to Waterville to play their arch-rivals, the Purple Panthers. Both teams were evenly matched, and neither scored in the first period. The second period was the same with the exception of Waterville's scoring late in the period to push Waterville out in front by six points. ln the second half both teams scored once, Waterville scoring in the third frame, and Lawrence in the fourth. Co-captain Phil Pollard scooted around his own left end for the Bulldogs' score, with Bob Bragg rushing the extra point. LAWRENCE 7 WINSLOW 21 On November 9 the Lawrence Bulldogs closed their season by dropping a 2l-7 decision to Winslow. Offensively, the running of the second-string backfield composed of Ralph Ronco, Herbert Gilley, and Kenny Littlefield was on the bright side. Playing a fine game defensively were co-captain Jerry Michael, Keith Cook, Harry Pollard, and Billy Wilson. It was one of the best records that Lawrence has had in a long time. During the season the Bulldogs won two playoff games and played Ellsworth High School in the quarter- final game of the State Principals' Association playoffs. The Bulldogs lost to the Eagles 4-1, having put up a terrific battle. During the season we also beat our arch rival, Waterville, twice to make it four straight wins over them in the last two years. The success of our season was due to the clutch pitching, to the hitting ability of the entire team, and to the hard work of our fine coach, Merrill Wilson. American Composers of the Twentieth Century was the theme of the annual Hit Parade which was presented in April, The program consisted of selections from the scrapbook of .Terohme Kerne, Irving Berlin, Richard Rogers, Vincent Yoeman, Cole Porter, Victor Herbert, and many others . As an added attraction there were a few novelty numbers. On May 15 the chorus attended the Eastern Maine festival, which was held at Farmington. The Student Council has probably done more for Lawrence High School than any other organization. The members have sponsored several dances, a successful traffic program, and a magazine campaign to raise money for insufficient sports funds. Two successful dances that were held were the Twirp Dance and the Christmas Dance. Another event that the Student Council sponsored was the annual Ecnerwal Fair to which every student looks forward. In March twenty-seven members with their advisor attended a banquet at the University of Maine. At the District Contest held at Unity, the Lawrence Chapter placed first. Wendell Bickford won first prize in rope work. ln May a Father, Mother, and Son Banquet was held jointly with the Future Homemakers of America. Supervised Farm Practice Certificates were awarded boys having the best project for the year, Winthrop Richards received his State Farmer Degree. Wendell Bickford won first place in rope-splicing at the State Convention at the University of Maine. Lawrence Fish, Frederick Fish, Franklin Kramer, Winthrop Richards, Frank Tozier, and Douglas Shores exhibited twenty-three head of cattle at the Windsor Fair. Wendell Bickford, Paul Mushero, Douglas Shores, Frank Tozier, Winthrop Richards, Franklin Kramer, Frederick Fish, and Lawrence Fish exhibited twenty-nine head of dairy cattle at Skowhegan State Fair, Nine members and Mr, Hazen drove to the National Convention, Kansas City, Missouri, on a tvvelve-day trip and traveled about four thousand miles, In the County Soil Conservation Essay Contest, Paul Currier won first place and was awarded 515, Frederick Fish placed third. Members of the Methodist Church of Fairfield Center served a banquet to thirty-five of our boys in appreci- ation for the landscaping-a project accomplished by the group. In March we made an Easter outfit for a four-year-old girl. The clothes were given to a worthy child. We made a cloth scrapbook for children in a local hospital. The following Friday seven members of the Senior Class and four members of the Junior Class were tapped as initiates to the Honor Society. CHHDIDHH Each year the Silence Howard Hayden Chapter of the D.A.R. awards a medal to one of our senior girls. In order to qualify, a girl must excel in these qualities- dependability, success, leadership, and patriotism. The Senior Class votes for three girls who best typify these qualities. The faculty then chooses one from the three. This year the girl chosen to receive the medal and to y represent Lawrence High School was Miss Mary Blodgett. Eight members of the Junior Class were chosen to participate. Dramatic selections were given to Ronald Smith, Carole 0'Blenis, and Diana Cloutierg orations, by Bradford Brown and Dean Stewartg and humorous readings were given by Joanne Philbrick, Marlene Pellerin, and Roger Pellerin. All selections were very well-done to the credit of Mrs. Cecilia Thyng, our faculty advisor. The first prize was won by Bradford Brown with The Dream g Carol O'Blenis won second prize with Overdose g and Marlene Pellerin took third prize with the selection One Sunday Afternoon. The orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Gertrude Smith, provided music. We also enjoyed a cornet solo by Paul Getchell, a member of the Junior Class.
