THE LAWRENCE LYRE The next afternoon Reddy reported at the football fneld The coach was not very encouraging to Reddys way of thmkmg but he llked football so he declded to keep on practlcmg The flrst game was lxsted to be played the commg Saturday wxth Hllton Academy Reddy worked very hard durmg practice The Friday before the game the coach sald, Moore you report at the game tomorrow You re substxtute It was the day of the game The held and grandstands were already filled The whlstle blew The game began The first quarter was not very excxtmg No pomts were won by elther slde The second quarter Hllton made a touch down Reddy groaned as he watched the scorekeeper mark down the large 6 Durlng the thlrd quarter Westons half back was knocked out and they dlscovered a broken leg so he was rushed to the hos pxtal Moore you ve got your chance now sald the coach and you ve got one quarter to show me what you can do Reddy hurrxed out on the field He was voxce of a Weston man saymg We re sunk No hope Reddy caught the ball Graspmg nt tlghtly he ran for the goal Wlth Hxltons men close behmd Then came the crxes of, Red Moore' Flght' Flght' Fxghtl Reddy had made a touchdown As he hurrled back to his posltxon ln the lme up he heard the tlmekeeper say Flve mmutes to go Agaln the ball was Reddys but Hllton s rxght end blocked his run Fmally he suc ceeded ln gammg the ball agam Runmng blmdly towards the goal he pushed xt over the lme Just as the whlstle blew The game was over The score 12 to 6' Amxd cheers Reddy was hfted hxgh on the shoulders of the boys Good work' Why dxdnt you make yourself known around here before? they asked Make myself known' sald Reddy Me the most unpopular fellow ln college Page Exght Unpopular nothlng' the boys msxsted from thus mmute on you re our most pop ular man Reddy stammered hls thanks Gee fel lows, he said thxs IS more than I expected I don t want to be the most popul Hls volce was completely drowned as the students yelled Three cheers for Red Moore Westons most popular man P L 30 L..1 JOE S MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT Jack and I were only young boys at the tlme of thxs mcldent as I was fifteen and Jack a llttle over thlrteen Joe a tall lanky fellow wxth long sllm legs and long arms flappmg at hls sldes was boardmg at our house We were always playmg pranks on hxm Our older slster Mary was havmg a molasses candy pull and as usual we boys were all hustled off to bed Not wantmg to go to sleep so early we turned ln on Joe for a good tlme Joe was already ln bed so we Just Jumped m besxde hxm to be real frlend On the farther s1de of the bed a square hole was cut xn the floor whlch served the purpose of a register Thls was about two feet and a half square and was Just over the table m the kltchen Through thls hole we could hear the company makmg and pullmg candy Well everythmg went all rxght for a few moments untxl we declded we had better start a llttle fight All went well untll Jack and I gave Joe a good sized klck sendlng hlm sprawlmg out of bed Joe was always havmg hard luck and thls t1me It happened to be the hard luck of bemg on the farther slde of the bed He Just slld through that hole as lf he were a greased pole Rlght through that hole he went and mto the mxddle of the table also mto the mldst of about thxrty two saucers of molasses candy and rlght xn front of all those folks They lmmedlately saw that he was not dressed H ' ll ' ' ' I . THE LAWRENCE LYRE for company and all those ladxes left post haste Joe picked himself up with all those sauc ers of candy clmgmg to him At each step a few saucers fell off and the molasses be gan to run down those pipe stem legs He Just flew up the stairs and into his room, molasses and all Joe agrees that this was his most m barrasmg moment and the worst truck we ever played on him Of course we hadnt thought about that hole VO 0 ATHLETICS FOOTBALL This year we were represented on the grldlron by one of the best football teams Lawrence ever had Coach Jack Erickson started practlce the second day of school and about fourteen men were out He had a few veterans and fair materlal W worked hard for two weeks and then went to Livermore Falls where we won wlth a score of 20 0 Thls vun gave the team more confidence and the followmg Saturday we mg The next Saturday we went to Cam den We met a small team but it was full of fight and we worked to win 6 0 The following Saturday we were to play Bruns wlck but the game was cancelled because of unfavorable weather The next Satur day we played Skowhegan In this game we used for the first time our new Jerseys The game was played m a sea of mud and ended ln a scoreless tie 0 0 All the next week we worked hard for the game wlth Wmslow This game was the only defeat of the season Wmslow got a lucky break to get one touchdown The rest of the game was even The final score was 0 6 Ll The last game of the season was played on the next Friday We ran circles around Orono to wm by the score of 26 0 The success of the season was due to the Splflt of teamplay and fight that Coach Erickson gave us We showed good sport manship also We played as hard and as clean as a team could play Letter Men Capt Fleury J Nelson Jones R Shlbley McFarland S Hunter H Carter C Ackley L St Peter P O Brien Pc ters nllsbury I letcher Pillsbury Schedule H Opponents Llvermore Falls Belfast Camden Skowhegan Wmslow Orono 83 Page Ixme . ,, . . . . . . . - . . e - . .
