' r ers were on the floor Marjorle Sampson and Dolores Smlth were guards Ifrances Walker and Geraldme Jerry Whlte were forwards Elizabeth Betty Kexth was the sxde center and Helen James was the Jump mg center for Lawrence Hxgh The Watervxlle hlgh players were Ruth Wxllls and Florls Dusty as forwards Jos ephme Joe Prlest and Mary Dyer as guards Grace Brown as sxde center and Carmen Kennedy as Jumpxng center The game started amld the cheers and shouts of the people The players were alert and on thelr toes Both teams were up to date Every glrl on the team knew every play but through some fouls and wlth thclr luck Waterville hlgh had won ten pomts wlth only slx for Lawrence hxgh at the end of the first half of the game Prospects looked very dull for Lawrence Hugh wlth Watervllle scormg ten pomts to thexr slx and wlth Marjorle Sampson one of Lawrence s best guards off the floor wlth Page Slx her nose 1nJured and bleedmg makmg lt necessary for a substxtute Florence Porter to take her place People were fast changmg thelr mmds xn favor of Waterville Hlgh Waterville w1ll surely w1n thxs game people were heard to say wlth Margorle Sampson not playmg and Watervxlle hxgh already four pomts more than Lawrence hlgh Cheer up Lawrence someone shouted well beat them yet Jerry Whlte the best player on the team lS gomg to make five more pomts before the end of the game and Watervllle lS not gomg to get any more The guards wlll see to that The last part of the game started The ball went all around the gym glvlng Law xence one more pomt Four more pomts were needed by the Lawrence high girls to wm the game Would they get them? Shoot' Shoot for the basket Frances' was heard from the audience as at last the ball fell lnto the hands of Frances Vlalker They walted to catch It when lt came down Around on the rxm of the basket lt rolled then down lt came rxght through the bas ke Hurray for Frances the people shouted and then above the nolse of the throng loud and clear came the Lawrence hlgh cheer Just a few more mmutes to play' Who wlll wm'7 We wllll We w1ll' were the crles heard all ove1 the gym Ruth Wxllls had the ball and passed xt to Florms Dusty Florls threw xt toward the basket and mlssed Dolores Smlth caught the ball and threw xt to Betty Keith who then threw lt to Frances Walker She trled f0l the basket and mlssed People stood tense for a moment and held themr breath Who would catch xt when xt came down For just a moment they watched then down came the ball rlght lnto the waltmg hands of Jerry Whlte The basket Jerry' You can make lt' Shoot for the basket' Lawrence Hlgh shouted Up went the ball xt landed on the hoop of
