Arriving in the U.S. at age 14, he has fought insurmountable odds to become the first Hispanic principal in Lawrence High School’s history. Through three years as submaster and one as principal, he was always there for us. The class of 1987 is proud to be the first graduating class of what is sure to be a long and prosperous tenure as principal for Mr. Rosello. For everything he has done, we thank him. Mr. Fernandez certainly had a tough act to follow when he became an assistant principal this fall. One can just imagine the adjustment, the fact that he also inherited the senior class made the task even more formidable. He didn’t even let that stop him! Mr. Fernandez did a super job and was always a big help in times of need. Good luck to you too in your new position, and thank you for all you have done. Finally, the fall of 1986 featured a real natural rarity. Yes, for the first time in eleven years the Boston Red Sox actually won the American League Pennant. This fact alone is possibly the best omen that the class of 1987 could ask for. We’ll forgive you for los¬ ing the World Series. You went further than anyone thought you would. 5 Why even read this caption when you could be looking at the picture below? 8 9 11 14 ROBERT LEE FROST Lawrence High Class Of 1892 Robert Lee Frost is by far the most famous graduate of Lawrence High School. Exactly 95 years ago Frost gave the valedictory address to his graduating class of less than twenty students. Frost returned to Lawrence 25 years ago, on January 7, 1962, the eve of his 87th birthday. He was the guest of honor at the formal dedication of a million dollar elemen¬ tary school named after him. The scenario was well expressed by a then student reporter, covering the event for the “Lawrencian”: “As Robert Frost stood on the stage, talking not to us but with us, the stage seemed to fade away and become instead an easy chair beside a farmhouse fireplace, and we the audience became guests in this man’s home, listening enthralled to tales of his New England.” Frost left Lawrence High School, obscure and unherald¬ ed. Pursuing both the career of a teacher and a farmer, he wrote verse for twenty years before his genius was first recognized in a foreign land. Of course, no card playing goes on at school because the rules forbid it. So when I speak of cards, I’m talking about outside of school (Ha! Ha! Ha! cough, uh excuse me). As I was saying, 45s is a weird game. That’s probably why you have difficulty finding anyone who understands it outside of a ten mile radius of Lawrence. Who ever heard of a game where a jack is better than a king or queen? And what’s with this ace of hearts? Why not the three of clubs or something? And what does the fact that the third man is high have to do with it? I don’t understand. Seriously folks, the rules of the game, are quite simple. The real fun part is to play with non-Lawrencians around and offer no explanation of the rules. If you haven’t already done this at least a dozen times, I highly recommend it. Just when they think they understand, the seven of diamonds will somehow beat the jack of spades and the observer in question will completely lose it. The world record, to date, is some kid from Lynn who watched for seven minutes, eighteen seconds before running away screaming, “It’s stupid!!! It doesn’t make any sense!” Ah, if they only knew. And as we sit on the top of page 132,1 see what he meant. Good grief, you wouldn’t believe how ‘out of control’ one of these things is. It s just one of those things that you have to experience to appreciate; and, I think I can honestly appreciate being done experiencing it. I really shouldn t complain (although you see that I will anyway) because every cloud comes fully equipped with its fair share of silver linings. If my memory serves me correctly, I do believe I even saw the sun for a day or two back in October, but I can t be sure. I certainly didn’t do this all by myself, of course, (even if I’d like to pretend that I did). You should have passed a page somewhere that said YEARBOOK with a picture and some names. These people (along with a few others) were the backbone of the effort. All of the rotten, boring, grueling jobs got stuck to them (Hey! I didn’t want to do them). I don t dare start going into specifics for fear of missing two or three dozen things. The bottom line is that they came through when I needed them, and for this I thank them. THANK YOU!!! I must admit that I was a little selfish when it came to creative input. If there were something that you didn t like or were offended by, it was probably my idea (Sigh, Who am I kidding? It was definitely my idea.) Anyway, sorry. I tried to even out the jabs, and I don’t think that there is anything that can be considered unfair. I’ll firmly stand behind everything. (I think). Remember, without laughter, all we’d be able to do is hear people making mistakes. Before I forget, I also have to thank Ms. Shields for putting up with my mental meanderings for 12 months. She listened to all the stupid ideas, complaints and demands, without having me put away (quite an accomplishment). Or maybe she should be locked up for not having me locked up. Hmmmm . . . I also have to thank Mr. Rosello. His support was crucial to getting things done. There wasn’t once that he didn’t help as much as he could. What a guy! THANKS to him too. The Class of 1987 was special. I tried to paste together a book that would do it justice. And joke as we may, Lawrence High is a special place.
