Candidate ADMINISTRATION Behind every good school, there is a special group of individuals known to the students and faculty as the ad¬ ministrators. This year Lawrence High School is very fortunate to have on its staff some of the most educated and dedicated administrators in the educational field. Each of these people concerns himself with the well being of the students, and with effective leadership our school continues to rise among the best. This year the student body is lucky to have obtained two new members, Mr. Peter Smith, our Principal, and Mr. Horace Sarabia, our Assistant Principal. Even though they have only been here a short time, Mr. Smith and Mr. Sarabia have already proved to be an asset to our school. Away from the school, we have two other members of the administration. They are Mr. Maurice Smith, the Superintendent, and Mr. Ernest Zaik, the Assistant Superintendent. These two distinguished members are always working to better our school and educational facilities. Along the second floor corridor, one finds the busy of¬ fices of Miss Horner and Mr. Kennedy, two Submasters who never fail to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Across from them is Mr. Walsh, the Guidance Direc¬ tor. His office is constantly filled whether it be ambitious students or students who just want to talk. His door is always open. Further down the hall, the students can hear the voices of the determined athletes talking about next week’s game. They are speaking with Mr. Wolfendale, our well- known Athletic Director. All of these people are important to the welfare of our school since they never fail to promote good leadership for the students of Lawrence High School. William D. Kennedy Boston College B.S. They are also instrumental in seeing that every student’s schedule is both interesting and beneficial to him. Their work in the fields of guidance and curriculum, along with their painstaking ef¬ forts towards the development of the student and the school, will be long remembered. The office secretaries, Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Mendonsa, never fail to fulfill our every need. Mrs. Choquette is well known to college-bound seniors for whom she is indeed a great asset in filling out transcripts and applications. Mr. Cain keeps careful track of absentees and truants, while Mrs. Batts, our highly qualified nurse, is ready with a cure for our everyday ailments. Mr. Pete Dominico, of course, is known to everyone. Though in great demand, he is always ready and willing to help whenever called upon. For your un¬ selfish and gallant efforts, the class of 1974 says “Thanks”. Peter Dominico Margaret Choquette Gilda Mendonsa Gladys Batts R.N. 16 ENGLISH This year the English Department has added a new re¬ quirement which makes this language art more interesting for teachers and students alike. Public Speaking is no long¬ er a separate class on the senior’s curriculum. Since Miss Shine has retired, it is now included as part of the English class. One class per week is now devoted to teaching stu¬ dents the various facets of speaking in front of people. New semester courses in English have also been added. Among these are classes in Sports, Edgar Allan Poe, Sci¬ ence Fiction, and Reading Odyssey. Seniors who find these courses more interesting than a regular English course have the choice of taking any of them. Besides these half-semes¬ ter courses, our English Department also supplies us with honors, standard, academic, and basic English courses. The English Department is trying its best to help students pre¬ pare themselves for any career after high school. Julia McCarthy Radcliffe College A.B. Fitchburg State College M.Ed. Law¬ rence High School’s Social Studies Department, headed by Mr. Sullivan, includes many courses which are aimed at giving the students a clear understanding of our world. Courses such as History of the Soviet Union and African Studies expand the minds and attitudes of our young adults toward people in foreign countries. Behavioral sciences such as psychology, sociology and anthropology help us comprehend today’s complex social problems. For today’s students and tomorrows leaders, the Social Studies courses give an excellent background for a better outlook on life. Merrimack College B.A. Sociology History AgnessCyr College of Mt. Because of this important challenge to our gen¬ eration, the method of scientific instruction, and the material covered in science classes has been greatly changed and ex¬ panded. Lawrence High School’s Science Department, headed by Mr. Casey, has moved with the times and recognized the great importance of advanced instruction in this area. Pupils are offered a large range of science courses from which to choose. Each pupil is offered the opportunity to discover the challenging world of science. Through biology, botany, chem¬ istry, or physics, a whole new world is opened to the student and in this world, the student may find his future. John M. Lahey St. Anselms College A.B. There are courses in five modern languages; French, German, Spanish, Italian, and, of course, Latin which has always been an important part of our curriculum. The pupil with an apt itude for languages can graduate with an excellent background on which to build an exciting career in any of the areas where fluency in a language is required. There are records and tapes available in the language lab to help develop that perfect accent that makes it hard to distinguish the American from the native! These aids are also an excellent way for the student to see his own progress and become inspired to progress even further. In a world that is becoming smaller every day, with few barriers from one country to another, communica¬ tion among men is more important today than it has ever been. The exchanging of ideas and the solving of prob¬ lems in a congenial atmosphere by men of all nations may some day bring about the peace for which the world longs. Here at Lawrence High School, vocal and in¬ strumental courses are aimed at teaching the students how to express their inner-most feelings through song. Under the guidance of Miss Lani¬ gan, students enjoy such courses as Glee Club, Harmony, Music Appreication, and General Music. This year for the first time, Glee Club is con¬ s idered a full credit course and meets five full periods a week. This convenience helps those interested in singing to improve their abilities and techniques. This year we also have a new band director, Mr. Bruso, who is doing a fine job with our band. Mrs. Werlin does a great job in familiarizing the students and teachers with the facilities there. She makes the once complicated library techniques easy. Mrs. Donovan does work with exceptional children. With her unusual talents, she is able to acquaint them with their abilities and make their goals achievable. Mr. Ward is well known to all students. He teaches classroom driver’s education, as well as on-the-road training. It is through his hard work that students at L.H.S. learn the safe and correct way to drive. Although the French club can not make this dream possible, the students, along with their advisor, Miss Manning, do their best to see France through movies and French restaurants. Some are even lucky enough to travel to France during spring vacation. Projects such as making the Eiffel Tower out of toothpicks or designing the French flag with sugar cubes are undertaken by the members. However, the no news periods at Lawrence High are infrequent since something is always going on. This staff, which is well equipped, manages quite well and adds to the theory that Lawrence High School has some fine literary people. One of the best attractions of the Lawrencian is that it is free of charge and abundantly distributed. You bet they are! These negative characteristics are profound in some, but transparent in others. The making of our yearbook required the understanding of these weak points which were embedded in each and every one of us. This, in turn, gave us a sense of affection and togetherness never before found within the vast - ever — reaching boundaries of Lawrence High School. What goes into the making of a great yearbook? Certainly not proclaimed experience. We proved that. Ours was the duty of producing humorous captions, cropping unusual candids, canvassing towns for ads, and staying awake until “The Morn¬ ing After” simply because the total responsibility lay in our hands. Every year the yearbook staff continually be¬ comes more dedicated in its quest for establishing the most impressive yearbook, which we hope will reflect the spirit and fiber of these, our final days, at L.H.S. We have met our objective. We have re¬ linquished our anxieties. We are proud to present to you our final product. We have achieved our goal. This change has been well re¬ ceived and has led to a great deal of enthusiasm. Glee Club members perform a wide variety of music and, rehearsals take place for sixty to ninety minutes each day. The results are well worth the work. Members of the Glee Club give concerts throughout the year. During the Christmas season approximately eight concerts, some of them on the members own time, take place in the community as well as in school. The club performs at “L Pin” and “National Honor Society” inductions. They enjoy giving their Annual Spring Concerts and participating in Graduation Exercises. Each year the club members work very hard on at least one big fund-raising project. The results of their hard work are shown dur¬ ing the year by taking field trips in order to partake in music festivities, and by giving scholarships to deserving seniors during the Class Day program. They keep our illustrious graduates well informed of current happenings within the organization and of the status of the scholarship account. Without the prodding of these secretaries, the money received for the scholarship would not be accredited, and a deserving stu¬ dent would not be able to attend college. Filing, typing, billing and accounting are all strenuous du¬ ties which they perform intelli¬ gently and happily. Well done, girls! Reina Veilleux and Pam Routhier do their part for L.H.S. Library Aides The library aides, whose responsi¬ bilities were greatly magnified in comparison to last year, are especial¬ ly diligent and helpful this year. The reason for this was the change of lo¬ cation of the school’s library from L.H.S.’s fourth floor to Lawrence’s brand new library across the street. Sacrificing spare periods to help our librarian, Mrs. Werlin, in keeping up with the deluge of anxious students eager to use the new facilities, these students braved heat and cold alike to perform their duties. Filing, pick¬ ing up books, and in general keeping everything in its place, the library aides certainly kept the high school’s section of the library running effi¬ ciently and smoothly. History Club Every Lawrence High school student is required to take a course in United States History. Most students do not mind this rule because of the interest generated by History teachers and the students thirst for knowl¬ edge of their ancestors. The members of the History Club are great exam¬ ples of academic spirit. The club serves a dual purpose for the students. First it provides the students with a better knowledge of the material. Second, it tries to educate its’ members in the history of today. It does this by discussions, field trips to historical sites and placing an overall feeling of patriotism among all its’ members. The objec¬ tive of the club is to help its members in fur¬ thering their knowledge and enjoyment of the science. A visit to the New England Aquari¬ um and the Museum of Science in Boston and other such activities, under the guidance of the advisor, Mr. Pacheco, have made this possible. Due to the interrelationship with the Ecol¬ ogy Club, more students are able to partici¬ pate in school and community projects. In spite of the 1-7-1 record, the Lancer spirit pre¬ vailed throughout the season. Co-captains Chuck Berube and Rick Sammataro did a fine job of keeping the team united. The fact that the guys spent a week in training camp contributed. They all remembered that they had sacrificed their last week of summer vacation to the cause of winning and weren’t willing to give up an easy win to any rival team. The team suffered two really heart breaking losses this year. It was the first time in 9 years that our intercity rival Central Catholic beat L.H.S., though the determined efforts of L.H.S. are distinctly remembered. The second heartbreaker came in the annual Turkey Game with Lowell. The team had definitely given their all for this game, held the lead for a few sparkling moments, only to see the lead disintegrate before their eyes. The game was superbly executed by the Lancers. These players, who graduated in June of 1973, had been with the team since its beginning at L.H.S. In spite of the 2-10-5 record that the team holds, determination prevailed throughout the season. Coach Frank Nicolosi, in his first year as soccer coach, had two dependable co-captains, Terry Morrison and Tony Feole. The situation looks brighter for next year. There will be more experienced players, along with a more experienced Coach Nicolosi. The only severe loss that the team is contemplating is — you guessed it — Jacqueline Healy, the pretty team manager. 1973-74 Varsity Soccer Team FRONT ROW — Juan Pazmino, Walter Huacon, Co-captain Terry Morrison, Franco Scarvaglieni, Rick Adams, Sam Barillas, Chris Mroczko, Carlos Mavi- la. SECODN ROW — Brian Alonzi, Jimmy Levita, Mike Greg, Cecilia Perez, Lyman Jones, Mark Hatem, Tony Aditado, Billy Carney, Co-captain Tony Feole. BACK ROW — Coach Frank Nicolosi, Ronald Cobar, John Newell, Ronald King, Barry Milestone, Russ Robideau, Flowie Spector, Steve Girabaldi, Bill Traynor, Joe Butera, Carlos Arboleda, Assistant coach Ron Prada. 150 Co-captains — Terry Morrison and Tony Feole. Mark Hatem and Lyman Jones warming up with the team manager. Franco Scarvaglieni and Chris Mroczko carry the ball up the Field. John Newell prepares to get a piece of the ball. 151 Terry Morrison, a determined captain. Brian Alonzi makes another one of his superb saves. No ball is too high for Russ Robideau. Mark Hatem maneuvers the ball for the Lancers. L.H.S. Lancers on the move. 152 THE BALL IT SOARS, THE CROWD IT ROARS Well, it wasn’t another year of being bound for the Tech, but it was another team that was in need of reconstruction due to the loss of practically all of the veteran players. The team still had the two point-getters, Dan Cargill and Dan Richards, and a great coach, John Kelleher, to carry them through the season with a satisfactory record. Heartbreaking losses came in the two games with Central Catholic, but all that attended the games consider that Central won in points only. The team spirit and determination at these two games spurred the crowd on to this belief. The team has ambitions for higher scores next year. Everyone knows that Coach Kelleher seeks this goal along with the hopes of finding “higher” boys. 1974 Varsity Basketball Team: FRONT ROW L-R: Barry Jackson, Dan Cargill, Dan Richards, Chester Cousins. BACK ROW L-R: Derrell Petty, Dave Robinson, Jesus Nova, Eddie Romano, Jim Trotochaud, Coach John Kelleher, Scott Brown Missing when picture was taken: Jackie Clark. 154 Another Lancer drive towards the basket. Dave Robinson displays the growing pressures of the game. A tense moment for the Lancers. 155 HOOPSTERS DELIGHT Currently in the midst of transition from the Essex County League to the Merrimack Valley Conference, the 1973-1974 girls’ basketball team faced various new opponents as well as traditional old rivals this season. Gone from the roster were Salem and Lynn English; amply replacing them, however, were Dracut and our next-door neighbor, St. Mary’s. Practice was still the same as ever — hard! The result of these sessions was displayed for the home crowd this year at the Essex County Training School, on its beautiful rubberized court. With Varsity coach, Sally Reynolds, and Junior Varsity Coach, Patty Morency, combining their various talents to make every workout “stimulating,” their Lancerette team developed a long and lasting affection for their can of Tough Skin foot spray. Although not living up to expectations, the hard work of the team was not in vain, ending the season with a record of 6-8. Girls Varsity Basketball Team: FRONT ROW: LEFT TO RIGHT: Joyce Rutledge, Sandy Bald, Denise Gereau, Karen Endyke, Andrea Godin; BACK ROW: Coach — Sallie Reynolds, Wendy Lee, Diane Morin, Ann Hambelton, Sheryl Haloran, Ramona Schiffer, Susan McGowan. J.V. Girls Basketball: LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach — Patty Morency, Susan Fortier, Kit Shine, Karen Currence, Nanette Lionde, Valerie Simmons, Cheryl Lynch, Mary Anne White, Coach Susan Amilio. 156 J.V. Girls Basketball Team; LEFT TO RIGHT: Lynn Sirois, Barbara Longo, Karen Girabaldi, Ruth DeMarco, Christine Horeczy, Deborah Buote. 157 m m V 9A 158 Slipping, Sliding, Scoring Another season of non-league competetion existed for the Lawrence High School Hockey Team. Along with other things, that’s some¬ thing to look forward to next year. The Lancers will finally be back into organized hockey after a two year absence. Outstanding players were found in the per¬ sons of Pat Shea, David Pickles, and Joe Gag¬ non — the L.H.S. stalwart Veterans. The record for the hockey team isn’t exactly a winning record, but the guys never gave up. Our scores may not have been winning, but everyone that attended the games could sense the determination of the players. Maybe when the team is back into a league with more evenly matched opponents, the scores will match the spirit and maybe, just maybe, the attendance of the crowd will match the score. FRONT ROW, L-R: Tom Mannion, Brian Alonzi, Kim Blanchette, Steve Gerribaldi, Joe Macnamara, Paul Parent, Bill Rourke, Flash Gordon. Dave Pic¬ kles, John Pinet. BACK ROW L-R: Coaches Tom Sawyer Jim Gurry, Mike Greg, James Jackson, Joe Gagnon, Greg Morris, Ralph Higgenbottom, Joe Aleksa, Bill Balnchette, Paul Debennedetto, Pat Shea, Junior Gagnon, Brian Q. Simmers. 159 Do you think he ' ll notice my legs?! Brian Alonzi gives all he has ... 101 percent. Mike Greg sees a victory. Tom Mannion brilliantly moves around the defense. 160 . . . Is it soup yet? Pat Shea shines again. Joe Gagnon ... a superstar in his own time. 161 Marks . .. Get-Set Go! “Run for your life” seemed to be the motto of the L.H.S. track team this year. It was the first winning season in six years. The runners came up with a very commendable record of 6-2. The team had more “know-how” this year along with experienced runners. Co-captain Mark Hatem proved that he was the great runner that everyone knew he would turn into. Both team and coach worked courageously this year and came up with a well-deserved record. Regardless of what was said, the boys and coach of the indoor track team proved it could be done — have a winning season. FRONT ROW, L-R: Eric Ernshaw, Ed Saab, Oma Hilario, Bob Hammond, Steve Emery, Mark Hatem, Artty Ricktor, George Khoury, Howie Spector, Brian Rogers, Mike Ditolinar. BACK ROW: Ass. Coach Glen Alsup, Donald Saab, Paul Cardozza, Bill Collons, Jeff Schulz, Greg John, Brian Murphy, Paul Cavar- retta, Tom Salvo, Jim Loffredo, Sam Hilario, Dick Guselli, Coach Bob Welch, Bob Vituli. 162 Don Saab puts everything into the shotput. No jump is too high for Tom Salvo. Senior Jim Loffredo Oma Hilario, ajunior. Sam Hilario, a hard runner. 163 Brian Murphy hurdles his way to victory. Captain Mark Hatem sprints to another victory. Captain Steve Emery, a consist¬ ent point getter. Jeff Scholtz passes baton to Steve Emery. Mike Ditollinir, a determined runner. 164 Grappling on the Mat The theory of Samson and his long hair was proved entirely wrong again this year by the Lawrence High School Wrestling Team. The L.H.S. wrestlers had another fantastic season even though rules state that the guys can’t wear hair below their col¬ lars. So much for that Biblical rule! The season record for the team is 11-3-2, and they placed fourth in the Northeast Sectional Regional Championships. Six of our wrestlers went on to the State Championships to put on a fine performance on representing Lawrence High. The outstanding wrestlers were Moose Hajjar, David Ham- bleton, Ed Kasila, and Jamie Dupuy — of course all were veterans. For next year, the wrestlers don’t have much to worry about. There may be a lack of facilities in our school, but there is no lack of strong guys in our school. 1 FRONT ROW: LEFT-RIGHT: Tony Paris, A1 Indeglia, Paul Guisselli, Jamie Dupuy, Ed Kasila, Dave Hambleton, Ray Autiello, Dave Hammond, Dave Silva. ROW 2: Pedro Rodriguez, Peter Allain, Gene Cookson, Joe D’Urso, Maurice Hajjar, Bob Mailloux, David Eddy, Mark DiBenidetto, Mike Ambra. ROW 3: Rick Adams, David Kalil, Joe DiZazzo, Steve Clifton, Barry Milestone, Brian Mitchell, Russell Robidoux, Tom Crowley. ROW 4: Coach Bob Fitzgerald, Frank Annaldo, Isa Maxabar, Dick Barbett, Neil Driscoll, Eric Messina, Asst. Coach A1 Matthews. 165 166 I’ve got a “crush” on you. Kill!
