Dedication The teacher is like the candle, which lights others in consuming itself Ruffini Rear: Robert Martin, Bernard Kiernan, Robert Sullivan, John Casey, Leonard Young, Edward Glynn, John Harrington. Center Row: Joseph Walsh, Andrew Moynihan, Clarence LaBonte, Martin Egan, John Bateman, Edward Praetz, Frederick McCabe. Front Row: Julia McCarthy, Claire Toye, Esther Glenzel, Margaret O’Brien, Marion Shine, Mary Dolan, Abigail Condon. In 1944 they taught in LHS, and for twenty-five years they have remained with us—twenty-one truly dedicated teachers. They have tolerated difficult work¬ ing conditions and insufficient salaries, while attempt¬ ing to enlighten the minds of their students. Their instruction is creative, forceful, and challenging to the intellect. Through this inspirational teaching they have influenced and guided scores of students on to successful careers. This loyal group comprises some of the best edu¬ cators in our school. As we mature, we learn to ap¬ preciate them more and more, for helping us to think intelligently, and teaching us to do what is right. We students, just as those in 1944 and all the years in between, wish to express our thanks to them. They’re really great people, and to them we dedicate our book. 12

“Goodness is something so simple: always to live for others, never to seek one’s own advan¬ tage ’ D. Hammarskjold In Memoriam James F. Hennessey His death came as a shock—as sudden death always does, to those who are left behind. He devoted his life to the school system, and the children of Lawrence, and beyond that, to the city itself. Mr. Hennessey was known throughout the city, as the man who would help. He was active in community affairs, as a director, as a worker, as an orator, as an educator. He was approaching retirement, and the chance to enjoy a little rest—but sometimes the heart which is accustomed to beating for others is just too tired to beat for itself. We shall remember him, and we shall miss him. He was a good man.
