rT? i tk RAB V aeUSH££ ) P ' • Er ik T ■- ' .■ : - « , .I •3 ,.. g Star “ :.’•.‘ 1 |l . , •!! ., ,|t 1 s l£ • ' r, 0 ii j-; ja 1 ll; Twenty-five years ago, the Class of 1944 produced The Blue and White , Lawrence High School’s first classbook. Mr. Casey, the advisor, and his staff admirably overcame a myriad of problems—prob¬ lems that no longer exist, thanks to the efficiency of modern yearbook publishers. That classbook set tradition, and this year The Blue and White celebrates its silver an¬ niversary. In this past quarter of a cen¬ tury, the world has changed rapidly. We have grown up in the affluent society”, while our parents grew up in a country economically disadvantaged by a world war. Even Lawrence High School has changed. The Lawrence Public Common once thronged with students enjoying their morning recess; today, its broad paths are covered only by the shadows of trees. Human nature, however, remains constant ' Those were the days, my friends, We thought they’d never end, We’d sing and dance forever and a day, ■«£ ' .j. . ' w- ’ ■jr Jtt r f ■ B J0 •unriL « ; ■■■■ iHW ■ jiMsl ’ ji. ] •b - We’d live the life we choose, We’d fight and never lose, For we were young, and sure to have our way.’ Youth today has more leisure than did the youth of twenty-five years ago. Our forms of entertainment may be costlier and faster and bolder, but the Beach is as alluring in the Swinging Sixties” as it was during the Fighting Forties.” Having been conditioned to miniskirts, we imagine the dresses of 1944 as unworldly and antediluvian. Fur coats, surprisingly, are kindred to females of both generations. Besides fashion, the style of cars has radically changed. That sleek ’69 Buick convertible differs from any of the automobiles driven in ’44. Seeing a ’69 car on the road in ’44 would have convinced many people of an invasion of hostile Martians. Our lives have been made just a little easier by certain inventions, but note that all utilize one basic principle: the Wheel. The Wheel and the generation gap probably originated at about the same time. . . . That original class of ’44 has sons and daughters graduating in this, the Silver Anniversary year—a year when the Lawrence landscape is changing. The old buildings are coming down, to give way to a new silhouette, a new city. . . . We think we’re the first generation ever to disagree with our elders and reprimand them for their faults. We just don’t realize that their strug¬ gles, frustrations and ideals were equal to ours. During our adolescence, we witnessed the assassi¬ nations of three of our revered leaders, two of them brothers. These tragedies have sobered us. For¬ tunately, we missed the rise and fall of Hitler. It is no wonder that we want to change the world . . . THE BLUE AND WHITE SENIOR CLASSBOOK LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL Lawrence, Massachusetts Published by the Class of 1969 10 Contents Dedication The teacher is like the candle, which lights others in consuming itself Ruffini Rear: Robert Martin, Bernard Kiernan, Robert Sullivan, John Casey, Leonard Young, Edward Glynn, John Harrington. Center Row: Joseph Walsh, Andrew Moynihan, Clarence LaBonte, Martin Egan, John Bateman, Edward Praetz, Frederick McCabe. Front Row: Julia McCarthy, Claire Toye, Esther Glenzel, Margaret O’Brien, Marion Shine, Mary Dolan, Abigail Condon. In 1944 they taught in LHS, and for twenty-five years they have remained with us—twenty-one truly dedicated teachers. They have tolerated difficult work¬ ing conditions and insufficient salaries, while attempt¬ ing to enlighten the minds of their students. Their instruction is creative, forceful, and challenging to the intellect. Through this inspirational teaching they have influenced and guided scores of students on to successful careers. This loyal group comprises some of the best edu¬ cators in our school. As we mature, we learn to ap¬ preciate them more and more, for helping us to think intelligently, and teaching us to do what is right. We students, just as those in 1944 and all the years in between, wish to express our thanks to them. They’re really great people, and to them we dedicate our book. 12 “Goodness is something so simple: always to live for others, never to seek one’s own advan¬ tage ’ D. Hammarskjold In Memoriam James F. Hennessey His death came as a shock—as sudden death always does, to those who are left behind. He devoted his life to the school system, and the children of Lawrence, and beyond that, to the city itself. Mr. Hennessey was known throughout the city, as the man who would help. He was active in community affairs, as a director, as a worker, as an orator, as an educator. He was approaching retirement, and the chance to enjoy a little rest—but sometimes the heart which is accustomed to beating for others is just too tired to beat for itself. We shall remember him, and we shall miss him. He was a good man. Melts Winter Ice tting to know teacher bailable i„ Ssachus. L Ltube Improved Model... IDEAS Headmaster William J. English With the distinction of being the largest spoken language, our native tongue has close to a million words—big words, little words, beauti¬ ful words. Obviously, one need not know every one of the eight hundred thousand, but every American, nevertheless, should learn the basic grammar rules of the language together with the increased vocabulary demanded of an intelligent citizen. The English Department, whose purpose is to teach the students to communicate effectively in their native tongue, attempts to acquaint them with the various aspects of the language. Creative writing, American and English Literature, gram¬ mar, syntax and vocabulary are just a few of the many topics covered within the four years. What do you mean—you don’t know what page we’re on?” Suzanne Letourneau asks Paul Censullo, as Byron Matthews looks on. Where did I leave that note?” Sally Able asks Larry Carroll, Dick Chojnacki and Ronald Belanger. ERMANY-OEUTSCHLAMD-ALLEMACNE Language One of the greatest obstacles to communication between man and man, nation and nation, has been the difference in language. Bound by this invisible, yet powerful barrier, man has traditionally shied away from his unknown and strange neighbor. However, in a world in which nobody is really far away”, everyone must make an effort to scale this wall of lingual misunderstanding. The Modern Language Department, seeking to nurture a sympathetic under- , standing of cultures other than our own, gives the pupil an opportunity to learn Is Karen Reinhold rea ly interested. some of the different tongues of the world. With such progressive methods as the Language Laboratory or the new Audio-Visual System, the department guarantees the industrious student fluency in any language he has elected, be it French, Italian, Spanish or German. Sure I live on the Riviera! This is my house,” says Patrick Bass to Carolyn Cash. nuir M 1 traiun •rrrmr(: But Vinny—it can stand up by itself!” says Kathy Crowley. Page Un! Now what can that mean?” Maureen Holt asks Linda Etheridge l£HtAlj 5{ Richard Hardy and Louise Tacy enjoy reading French newspapers. Your guess is as good as mine,” says Donna Levingston. Mr. Rossi’s Italian pupils are interested in just one picture—their own! Cathy Bolis and Bobby Parsons are intent on studying German. 103 Day in, day out—the same old grind,” sighs Gail Fleming. Business Aware of the growing importance attached to clerical skills in an indus¬ trialized society such as ours, the Lawrence High School Business Depart¬ ment acquaints students with the world of commerce. Creating the environ¬ ment of a modern office within the classroom, the department offers courses in typewriting, stenography, bookkeeping, commercial law, economics and office machines. John Cook is a cool calculator. Ellen Joncas becomes wrapped up in her work. Carol Stramaglia and Linda Nartiff are loyal to Royal. Doesn’t the paper go someplace in there?” Pat Guarino asks Joan Catlett, Kathy Murray and Joyce Perrillo. OK. who put glue on the key? says Joe Kucharewicz. Mary Ann Morneault masters” proof reading. 105 Lorraine Bourassa is sure that’s where the J is. My hands are Friden,” says Roger Demers. . .. Ditto for Marie Gagne Janice Sidlik ends this line with a ring . . . three rings? Joyce Petelle shows Ken Gagnon where Lawrence High is. Social Studies Social Studies spans an endless gap, bridging man’s past with his present and future. Composed of a variety of interwoven disciplines, ranging from archae¬ ology to economics to philosophy, it seeks to interpret the origin and develop¬ ment of mankind. The Lawrence High School Social Studies Department, in order to present this complex network of social science to the student on a comprehensive level, has incorporated the various fields into such introductory courses as Civics, U.S. History, Problems in Democracy, World History, Ancient History and World Geography. Barry Dubois is a scholarly senior. Maria Lopatto and Idalia Ruiz map out the next lesson. 107 Joan Blais is out for a spin Therese Martin shows Nancy LoPiano how to win one If you can find it, it’s yours,” says Claude Turgeon to Diane Couture and Evelyn Wells. 108 Norman Arsenault—Don’t judge a book by its-cover The Freedom shrine is a familiar sight along the corridors of LHS We are all delighted to have Mrs. Burba back after her leave of absence. Maureen O’Keefe—our first lady dentist? Publ ic Speaking No senior leaves LHS without a period each week of public speaking. In spite of the trials and tribulations in¬ volved in the training of the speaking voice, the rewards are immense. Perhaps that is why one can always spot a Lawrence High graduate by his fine diction and poise. Jim Shaufenbil demonstrates his erector set. Kathy Raimondo puts another experiment to the torch. Science Keeping abreast of the latest technological advancements, the LHS Science Department has devoted itself to inspiring students towards a profession in the field of research. Combining the traditional approach with the progressive methods demanded in the instruction of a modern science, the department offers courses in the biological, physical, and chemical sciences on both the college preparatory and the general level. Bob McGinness— So you’re one of the Metrecal for Lunch Bunch.” We’ll turn it on, and make the school tilt.” Daniel Dobalian and John D’Agata. 112 I just can’t look!” squeals Kathy Bolis as George Wolfenden cuts up a frog. Touche! Gerry Hattori and Wendy Minsky duel. Joyce Longo, —I can’t believe it!” A word to the wise—Vinnie Carroll and Paula Najem Three students, three different results. Mary Lou Rottler, George O’Brien and Debby Potter. 113 Is that clear?” Sometimes Gerry Hattori needs more than a crutch. Mathematics Going hand in hand with science, equally fascinating, yet equally unexplored, is mathematics. The root and cause of the great parade of technology, expanding its borders in fields ranging from astronomy to nuclear physics, mathematics offers un¬ limited career opportunities. Modern wonders such as computers able to play chess or translate newspapers need operators, people able to program the machines. At LHS this revolution of progress has not gone unnoticed. The Mathematics De¬ partment has constantly aspired to prepare the pupils for an understanding of the basic concepts of this complex field. This goal the department has successfully achieved by gearing the courses to a variety of levels, ranging from that of a starting freshman to that of a college student. This year the department has brought into the school an innovation, the Math Laboratory. Consisting of ten automatic calculators, each able to compute astronomic figures in split seconds, the laboratory reflects the modern spirit of the institution. 114 No sticky fingers, please! Debby Cronin, Kevin Barry, Richard Hardy, Joshua Marvit and Dan Dobalian in the math lab. Even IBM couldn’t figure this one out. Tom Hoye, Billy Wetmore and Ed Carbonneau. Psst! Is this right?” Sam Soloman asks Phil Marino. Actually, we’re both equally baffled.” Anna Klepka and Susan Skea. Oh, Pat, you shouldn’t have!” Claire Bryant to Pat Curtis Harry Santiago wonders what to draw next, while Donna Stefanilo and Evelyn Wells work. Creative Art 116 Susan Skea gets involved in sticky business. Who said this art course was easy?” asks Elaine LeClair. The creative art department does not guarantee to transform anyone into a first-rate artist; no promises are made. Nevertheless, the students enrolled in this department’s courses are indeed well-assured that from within those sub¬ jects they will receive the inspiration and instruction necessary for the devel¬ opment of artistic talent. Ralph Broscoe says, A rose by any other name—” Shelly sweeps it under the Karp”-it. 117 Ron Jerackas sports” a new Lawrencian to Paul Cavaretta Manual Arts Lying ahead for many boys is the world of work—the fascinating world of the carpenter, the machinist, or the printer. This world is not an easy one, nor can one enter it unprepared. It demands the precision and judg¬ ment afforded only by years of intensive training. It is those ends that the Lawrence High School Manual Arts Depart¬ ment seeks to meet. Having as its basic philosophy the concept that each one is endowed by his Creator with different skills and traits, the depart¬ ment views as the basic unit the individual rather than the group, thus striving for the complete education of each student and assuring the highest individual performance. Gordon Collopy measures— It’s just one millimeter longer.” 118 Mike Desjardins says, I can’t find WMEX.” Home Economics The feminine satisfaction gained from making a dress, or preparing a meal is a pride felt daily by the girls enrolled in the Home Economics department. Most appealing to prospective homemakers, the department offers its pupils the opportunity to cultivate their skills in such household arts as dress-making, cooking or purchasing. They all LOOK so easy! You’re making great progress”, Evelyn Bouchard tells Suzanne Letourneau. Sally Ferrier and Tim Kelly are really swinging. Physical Education Physical fitness holds great meaning for this generation. Physical fitness is the exercise gained from manual labor, long walks, or work in the fields—all unknown to the softies” riding in cars, or pushing buttons. In short, it is the little extra umpph”, which by its very absence distin¬ guishes modern youngsters from their ancestors. The LHS Physical Education department comes to the aid of the Lawrence teen-ager. The gym program, making use of its fine equipment, helps the student develop a greater degree of agility, strength, and co¬ ordination. Always in search of new and better methods, the department has ex¬ perimented with the idea of including dancing in the gymnasium curricu¬ lum. The success of the experiment becomes obvious once one looks into the gleeful faces of the senior boys and girls keeping step. 120 Marie Gagne and Ron DiNicola go do-si-do! GLEE CLUB One of the few school organizations that existed twenty-five years ago, the Glee Club is still one of the most active groups at Law¬ rence High School. Members meet every week-day morning be¬ fore and during the home-room period. They sang carols in the school corridors as part of the annual Christmas program, and also performed on the Common for the enjoyment of the public. For the Bruce and Oliver Grammar school students, they pre¬ sented another holiday concert. Spring is the busiest time for Miss Lannigan, because she must arrange music for the L-Pin” ceremony, Alumni Night, and the concert with the Lawrence High School Band. Since this concert is the year’s biggest event, the Glee Club spends much time pol¬ ishing its performance. This year’s concert included medleys from the current musicals Camelot and Oliver. The Glee Club truly deserves the few field trips it takes. All the members who saw the musical Funny Girl enjoyed it im¬ mensely and, as a result of their musical perception, could thor¬ oughly appreciate its score. Since the History Club was so successful last year, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Walsh de¬ cided to continue it into ’68-’69. Last year’s members traveled to New York, where they attended an Arab-Israeli debate at the United Nations. For this school year, the advisors have a field trip planned which is equally as exciting. More young people are now taking an interest in current affairs. The growing dissatisfaction with our foreign policy, the conditions of the cities, and the plight of the Black people cause many teenagers and adults alike to become quite perplexed when they hear intelligent and highly re¬ spected people express extreme, yet con¬ vincing viewpoints. A forum for the high school student to find and express his con¬ victions is a very necessary thing, and the History Club is ideal for that purpose. One of the highlights of the organization is the annual field trip to one of the Boston museums that have plant or animal exhibits. Biology is the study of life divided into two broad parts: the study of animals, and the study of plants (Botany). Since animals are dependent upon plants for food, the study of plants is as important to us as is the study of animals. Ruvane Marvit mimeographed and distributed bulletins comprised of mathematical problems, puzzles, brain teasers and discussions. The members toured the Nashua, New Hampshire Federal Air Control Center, a complex that uses com¬ puters to locate and keep track of air vehicles. The only school activity whose members are chosen for their mathematical aptitude is the Math Team. It participated in four meets, each consisting of five rounds (Arithmetic, Algebra I, Al¬ gebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry), each student working independently, and two team problems. The meetings alternate between afternoon and evening meetings. Miss Julia McCarthy sacrifices her time to super¬ vise each meeting, all run ' by strict parliamentary procedure. Women have been discussing the direction of chivalry since the time of Sir Lancelot, and the debate in ’69 proved the continuing popularity of the subject. Members of the De¬ bating Society discussed more serious problems, too, in¬ cluding the Vietnam war. The skills one receives by belonging and participating in the Debating Society far outweigh the inconveniences of going to the school every other Wednesday evening. Mr. O’Sullivan gives Roger Lemieux and Paul Cavarretta a few pointers. When Mr. Moynihan chose the editor for the ’68-’69 Lawrencian, no one expected any extraordinary changes. After all, for three years the seniors could remember re¬ ceiving every so often four page bulletins about nice, inter¬ esting school items: the class poll results, the activities of the clubs, and the cute little Happiness is. ...” A news¬ paper reflects its editor, and the class of ’69 learned a long time ago that Josh was more than a nice, interesting” per¬ son. So the forty-first volume of the paper radically changed. The school items remain, for they are necessary for a school newspaper, but other things have been added; most notice¬ ably, the eight-page issue and the photographs. Josh has brought about subtler changes also. More poetry appears not quiet ditties, but profound philosophy. Short stories, essays, letters to the editor, and special interests found their way onto the pages of the Lawrencian. Pupils in home¬ rooms wrote their opinions concerning the generation gap and twenty-three students had their replies printed in the Sound Off” column. Every staff member made valuable contributions to all five issues. The boys in the print shop, under the direction of their teacher, Mr. O’Sullivan, deserve a great deal of appreciation for they must set and reset twelve or even twenty-four columns of type. They have to use painstaking care because each letter is set separately and every word must be spelled correctly. The Lawrencian is one of the few school news¬ papers actually printed by students. Most schools have their publications printed by either a local newspaper or a com¬ mercial firm. For a perfect prom, the class officers, along with the Home Room Representatives work all year in close conjunction with Mr. O’Brien and the class advisors. The class of 1969 was permitted to hold the first assembly with only the class advisors present. At the first of two such meetings, the class voted to hold a coffee house and a skating party, which turned out quite successfully. At the second meeting, the class heard the pros and cons of where to go after the movie the night of the prom.” It was finally decided to go to a restaurant or country club. A profitable technique used to get more money in the class treasury was an impromptu collection near the end of the assembly. BAND In 1944, female musicians joined the school orchestra rather than the band, so the marching band consisted of all boys. In 1969, the orchestra has been nonexistent for many years, and the girls have become band members. The band, however, func¬ tions as an orchestra during its spring concert season. Practice began the first week in September, since the first foot¬ ball game was only a month away. Aside from regular morning rehearsals directed by Mr. Vogel, the group practiced at the sta¬ dium every Thursday afternoon during the football season. As Thanksgiving approached, the weather turned frigid and ninety minutes at the stadium felt more like ninety winters in Alaska. During the Santa Claus parade, everyone thought about the Memorial Day parade—it was so hot then. The band had two exchange concerts with the Bernards High School band of New Jersey; one in New Jersey, the other in Lawrence. The band marched for Field Day in Lowell, the city that believes that Thanksgiving was just yesterday. Memorial Day came, and band members thought about the Santa Claus parade—it was so cold then. 146 Elaine Parent and Andrea Lajoie play a tune. Marie LaLonde shows her musical skills. THE MAJORETTES One usually associates with the word ' ' majorette” the picture of a girl in gleaming white boots tossing and catching a sparkling silver stick.” Our majorettes have diversified talent, and every routine presents something highly original. For the 1966 Thanks¬ giving Day football game the corps, dressed as matadores in knickers and red capes, danced to a medley of Tiajuana Brass songs. This year, the squad performed at football games as Span¬ ish peasants, Russian swordsmen, and high-kicking chorus girls. In May of 1968, the majorette corps appeared at a sharp-shoot¬ ing” contest at the Greater Lawrence Regional Vocational High School, to brighten up the place.” The all male student body readily welcomed the girls. Hours of practice produce the polished look the public sees. At each practice without the band, the girls first exercise to limber up, then review the baton, da nce, and marching routines, and finally learn new ones for the coming football season. Donna, Beth and Ellie, the senior majorettes, will always remember danc¬ ing to Tea for Two” on a red bucket, and marching in those endless field day parades at Lowell. 1-2-3 Kick. 148 Captain Elinor Schwartz Taking a break. The band, followed by the Pep Club and the football squad, led the parade to the common. Behind them was the entire student body. Mr. O’Brien spoke from the bandstand, and reflected that we should be proud of the team, because being victorious is always easy, while fighting with the odds against you is always difficult. Despite a lack of depth, the Lancer front liners did a remark¬ ably consistent job all year. Led by Captain Claude Turgeon and Co-Captains, Bert Roy and Norm Arsenault, who were also the three top scorers, the team was very aggressive and spirited, and often came from be¬ hind to win. By virtue of their league championship, the Lancer sextet was invited to the State Hockey Tournament and although the team was eliminated in the first round, it gave Lawrence High School overall a fine season of hockey.
