Throughout the years, the Lancer has become the symbol of all that is good, noble, and just. He personifies courage, fidelity, and honor—the most revered qualities of humanity. Since 1957, the name of all Lawrence High athletic teams has been the Lancers.” This is an appropriate name for them, because they do typify the Lancer spirit with their gallant efforts and accomplishments. However, it would be an injustice to refer only to the athletes of our school as Lancers. The spirit of the Lancer burns brightly in the hearts of all who attend Lawrence High School. He lives in the souls of all who have ever lived briefly inside the yellow walls of brick. The Lancer of Lawrence High is many people. He is the football player charging down the field, and the valedictorian making his address. He is the spectator who loses his voice while cheering for a victory, and the student who completes his assignments. He is the noble and the humble, the strong and the weak, the great and the small. He is the person who has gained maturity and knowledge because of his experiences here. He is the person in whom Lawrence High School may take pride. The Lancer as we conceive him, is on the front cover of this book. He is charging ahead with his shield held high, prepared to face the unknown. This is what we must also do, for we are the Lancers. His courage is our courage, his fidelity is our fidelity, and his honor is our honor. It is to this Lancer and his principles that we dedicate this book, and it is our most sincere hope that we shall always be worthy of the title Lancer. jr it l $jp|. Maria Currao searches diligently for that one little error! Dennis Watkins double-checks. The Business course offers to each of its students the opportunity to specialize in some phase of office procedure, under the general titles of secretarial and accounting. The department gives instruction in office machines, advanced shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping. Graduates from the business department have always been in demand in the city of Lawrence, because of the excellent reputation they have made for themselves among the city’s businessmen. Susan Buckley makes it balance. 86 Kathy Murdock en-JOYS her shorthand. Miss McIntosh’s office machines do everything but talk—and a few of them even do that! Dennis O’Donnell duplicates. IBM? Easy! At least Janice Roy thinks so! 87 M O R E B U S Carol Simone’s page is without one error! N E S Jimmy Siudit keeps TRACK of his bookkeeping. r ■ Karen Morel will add charm as well as figures to her job of the future. Alan Ferris proves he can do it—sprain or no sprain! 88 We are grateful for Sandee Henning’s art training. She created the montages in our yearbook. CREATIVE ART The Creative Art rooms are probably the most attractive in the school. While other rooms may have many colorful posters, and various cheerful decorations, the young artists in this depart¬ ment act as their own interior decorators. The walls of these rooms are covered with original works, done in many bright and pastel colors, and a wide range of textures. This department offers three years of training to the interested student, covering all phases of drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics, within the limits of the available time. Jimmy Martin colors it happy! No, Miss Bradley, I don’t understand why I can’t paw paint! Donna Willette, Paul Searle and Julie Steffen pool their ideas to conquer the problem. Sandy Ferrante and Frances Laverriere point with pride to the Christ¬ mas Creche. 89 Mr. Moynihan’s class chuckles at a Shakespearian pun. Donna Massoud and Robert Persichetti know their verb forms. ENGLISH Our native tongue is both demanding and complicated. At Lawrence High School, an efficient and hard-working staff is constantly at work, guiding pupils through the maze of English grammar and composition. The course also covers a broad range of literature of varying difficulty, providing the college-bound pupil with the proper back¬ ground for his future work, and giving the terminal student an idea of what is available to him in the great world of books, if he wishes to continue learning, once his formal education has ended. Could it be a scene from She Stoops to Conquer?” 90 Karen Morel gets a bit of advice from Miss Dolan. Marsha Gordon considers a new career. 91 When Jimmy Benson told Carol Palombo he would give her the whole world—-he meant it! HISTORY Man learns from the past, and the past is History. The high school years are the most impressionable for young men and women, and it is during this time that they acquire the impressions and attitudes that will remain with them for the rest of their days. Through the Social Studies—History, Economics, and Law—they learn what man has done in the past, what mistakes he has made, how he has learned to live with his fellow man. They learn what qualities are necessary for good and responsible citizenship. This end result is the continuing aim of the Social Studies Department. Harriet Stefin says that Lawrence IS on the map! Mr. Sullivan returns a test—to an unhappy hand! 92 Mr. Lebowitz—that’s the law! Marilyn Marino tells Brenda Silver that The rain in Spain falls mainly . . John Cardillo thoughtfully composes his next answer. Vic Scionti states his point. Points his state? Anna da Silva wonders where she left her glasses. 93 Joan Banker sews silver threads among the gold. HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics Course has a universal appeal to young women. The girl who is an excellent cook or seam¬ stress, who knows how to manage a budget and maintain an attractive home, is universally admired. Pupils in this course have the satisfaction of being able to give concrete evidence of their training—by wearing a dress that they have made, or preparing a meal for the family, or re-decorating a room. The skills acquired in Home Economics are never forgotten, for the graduate will use them every day for the rest of her life. v •! LANGUAGE LAB At last we have a language lab! The Language Department in Lawrence High School, until this year, has had every kind of aid to learning available in a language, except the lab—and now we have that! From the large console at the front of the room, it is possible for the teacher to send ten different programs simultaneously, thereby adapting the lesson to the individual needs of the pupils. There are thirty student booths, with a minimum of controls to go out of order. Since the lab is so popular with language students, we can see that the enrollment in the department will soar in the next few years. The main console makes it possible to beam 10 separate lessons to pupils simultaneously. The students’ console, head phone and microphone, inside an indivi¬ dual booth. View from the rear of the Language Lab. 95 Individual tapes co-ordinated to pupils’ booths, for recording and listening to one’s own accent. This mural, done in colored chalk, brightens the Language Lab. LANGUAGES The ability to communicate effectively in two or three languages has always been the mark of a truly educated man, but it has never been as important as it is today, in a world where the next country is never more than a few air-hours away. The Modern Language department offers four lan¬ guages, French, Spanish, Italian and German, to inter¬ ested students. It is equipped with the latest aids for teaching, including, of course, the new language labor¬ atory. Pupils in every course in Lawrence High School may elect to take one or more of the languages offered, and a high percentage of the total enrollment takes advantage of this opportunity. A third year French class does advanced work in the lab. The advanced language class is often smaller—allowing for more individual attention. 96 The spotlight is on lucky Pete D’Antonio, who is the only male in his French class. MANUAL ARTS The young man who is interested in wood-working, mechanics, printing or sheet metal will find a great deal to interest him in the Manual Arts department. The boy who enjoys creating with his own hands something unique, or beautiful, from a few pieces of wood, or sheet metal; the boy who enjoys setting type, and seeing the results in a page of the Lawrencian; the boy who enjoys the smooth purr of a perfectly functioning engine, can all find fulfillment in Manual Arts. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The youngsters in our society no longer walk from place to place, as they did a gen¬ eration ago—they ride. Natural exercise to develop firm young muscles and healthy bodies is no longer part of every young man and woman’s daily existence, as it once was; therefore, it has become the duty of our nation’s schools to fill the void that modern living has brought about. The high school gymnasium has taken the place of long walks in the country. The parallel bars, rings and ropes all contribute to the physical development of our youth. In Lawrence High School, every pupil who is physically able is required to take gym. The program is designed to do for young bodies what the academic classes do for young minds—bring them to the highest possible peak of development in four short years. Our physical Education department is constantly at work to achieve this goal. Tom Roussell makes it look easy. 102 By Jimminy! (DeDeus) that’s a lot of effort! Rise to the challenge, girls! Young men and women as never before, are finding in today’s careers in science an exhilarating excitement—a feeling of being part of a great age of discovery. The Science department is geared to develop this aware-, ness of the technological age. As a matter of fact, the very thought of standing in front of a group without going completely blank, or groping fot words, or fainting dead away, strikes terror into the hearts of most of us. The Public Speaking course in Lawrence High School is required for all seniors, and has been for years. Quite possibly, it is within these walls that the greatest change takes place from September to June. Perhaps practice does not always make perfect, but speaking repeatedly in front of a group does develop poise and self-confidence. During the 1967-1968 season, the Lawrence High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Oswald Vogel, had made another great contribution to our school history. The faith¬ ful participation of its members at every game during the football season was only the beginning of a busy schedule. At Christmas time, the band marched in the Santa Claus parade, much to the delight of the thousands of little folk who had gathered to see Santa come to Lawrence. Other activities during the year included a public concert at the Bruce School, participation in the Beverly Music Fes¬ tival, an exchange concert with another high school band, and participation in the Lawrence Grammar and High School graduation exercises. It has been a busy year—and once again, the band has brought honor and prestige to the high school it represents, and we are grateful. Senior Reed Duo Marjorie Boddy and Marjorie Hacker. Under the direction of Mr. James Batts, the 1968 Boys’ Debating Society continued in the tradition of its predecessors. Although it had no league affiliation, the B.D.S.” debated various schools on an informal basis. In addition, the Society debated in the annual Suffolk University tournament. HISTORY CLUB The recently organized History Club, under the direction of Mr. John Wilson, holds its meetings twice monthly. The popularity of the subject is evident in the size of the group. Since we are living in an age where something of historical significance seems to be happening almost daily, History Club meetings are among the liveliest in the school. 1968 is a presidential election year—at a time when the Pueblo incident, and the war in Viet Nam are very much in the news. Is it any wonder that our next president would be a matter of deep concern, and sometimes heated argument among young men and women of high school age? The History Club also instills in its members the importance of our historical background, with particular emphasis on our New England heritage. In the planning stage for this year’s activities is a trip along the Freedom Trail in Boston, in addition to excur¬ sions to the Harvard Museum, and the Boston Museum of Science. The Yearbook Staff begins early in the fall, and works under increasing pres¬ sure every month until the final deadline in March. Everyone heaves a sigh of relief when the book goes in, and then turns to the job of producing a supplement. No one honestly expects all the work involved, but no one regrets it either—once it’s over. The yearbook has given us the opportunity to work with fellow classmates toward a common goal, and has taught us to take on our share of responsibility with a smile. We hope that this yearbook will bring pleasant memories of your Lawrence High School years each time you leaf through it, and we hope that the 1968 edition will be a smashing” success. FOOTBALL For the first time in Lawrence High’s football history, the Lancers elected tri-captains. Captains Anthony Baglieri, George Kay and Frank Brucato, under the valuable leadership and expe¬ rience of Coach Gerald Callagy, led their team to a commendable record of six wins and three losses. The Lancers got off to an impressive start with three successive shutouts, but before a pow¬ erful Beverly team, they met their first defeat. Their record stood six and two, with the classic Thanksgiving Coach Callagy gives Ron DiNicola the next play. game left. On a wet and dreary Thanksgiving Day, the Lancers, against one of the most powerful Lowell teams in a quarter of a century, went gallantly down to defeat. They kept the Lowell Raiders, who had been averaging between thirty and forty points a game all year long, to 14 points the first half, and seven the second half. So ended the 1967 football season for the Lawrence High Lancers, but they had left their mark—and they will not easily be forgotten. Frank Brucato charges toward the opponent. 135 Dennis Tautenham is on the move. Tony Baglieri makes the stop, with Dennis Tautenham and Lou John Naffah—always ready! Solomon close at his heels. Kneeling: Doug Ross, Mike Mansour, Dennis Timmons, Jimmy Hurley, Sonny Fichera, Jim Licciardi. The frustrating 1967-1968 basketball season ended with a total of four wins and sixteen losses. Despite their poor record, the Lancers played good, respectable ball. The only two experienced starters, co-captains Jim Hurley and Dennis Timmons, led the of¬ fensive attack. Newcomers Andy Schwartz and Alan Clark, the big men on the team, proved to be tough under the boards, but they lacked that valuable quality, experience. Rounding out the starting five, Mike Mansour, a player who saw limited action last year, contributed greatly to the team effort with his fine shooting, and the ability to come up with the ball. Reserves Sonny Fichera, Jim Licciardi and John Malnati added punch to the team when things got bad, as they did many times during the year. Highlights of the season came in one of the most exciting basket¬ ball games played in Greater Lawrence, as the Lancers stomped back to defeat the Beverly Panthers in a double overtime. Other high¬ lights included an upset victory over Andover High, and other vic¬ tories over Saugus, and again, the Beverly Panthers. With only three varsity players who saw very limited action this year returning next season, Coach Joe Carter will be working hard to improve this year’s record. Coach Cater gives last minute instructions to the team. 138 INDIVIDUAL SCORING BASKETBALL Co-Captain Dennis Timmons takes a crucial foul shot. G F Pts. First line defensemen Claude Turgeon and Bert Roy helped to round out a solid nucleus for a truly great team. Every player was talented, and each one was aggressive. Who said that our cheerleaders have it easy?” If he knew all that a cheerleader does, he would quickly change his tune”. The first obstacle that a cheerleader faces is the annual try-out period. After she completes a series of routines and cheers, the cheerleader is selected on the basis of the poise, character, and general physical ability which she has displayed. Now that she is a cheerleader, she finds that she must devote large amounts of time to her new found duties. She and the girls must practice four days a week during the football, basketball, and hockey seasons to prepare for the games. In addition to her cheering during the football season, she decorates the clubhouse, and creates posters with the help of the Pep Club. Under the direction of Mrs. Claire Pierce, the L.H.S. cheer¬ leaders are dedicated to the goals of arousing school spirit and supporting our athletes.
