YU Table of Contents Administration and faculty . 4 Senior section . 16 Curricular section . 78 Extra-curricular activities . 96 Athletics . 120 Advertising . 153 The Lawrence Lancer “The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton” Lawrence High School has kept this old adage in mind for three quarters of a century. Its first uniform football team was organized in 1881. Down through the years, the medium of athletics has served as a teacher of leadership, discipline, and co-operation. From the erection of the “old building” in 1849, Lawrence High School’s athletic teams were called “The Blue and Whites”. After the greatly publicized No God, No Country” strikes in 1912, the title was changed to “The Strikers”. However, the nickname soon became out of date, and the athletic teams became again The Blue and Whites”. As the years went on, our football team improved steadily. However, in 1951, the only time in the school’s history, the Lawrence High School eleven failed to win a single game, finishing the season with nine defeats in nine contests. During that season, in the Haverhill game, the score was 48-0 at the end of the first half. A less determined band of athletes might have abandoned football altogether! However, The Blue and Whites” roared back, and reached a peak in 1957, sweeping aside all their opponents to win undisputed possession of the Class A championship. In winning this goal, the players exhibited the same tenacity their elders displayed when they conquered the unemployment problem brought on by the closing of the Lawrence mills in the last decade. The courage and perseverance of this football team of 1957 so inspired Bill Ferguson, a reporter for the Eagle-Tribune, that he dubbed the players The Lawrence Lancers”. This name caught the imagination of the general public, and our teams have been known as the “Lancers” ever since. The Lancer, as we imagine him, is on the opposite page. We hope we shall always be worthy of this symbol of courage and chivalry. 2
