The bell has rung for the final time ending our high school years. To each of us the four years have had a different meaning. For the scholar it meant long hours of diligent study, to the athlete lengthy practice to achieve his goal of victory. As time progresses we will probably reflect upon our high school years as care-free days. The editorial staff of the Blue and White hopes that this classbook can someday bring back memories of the glorious days of old.” A mtzw. f . ■: kjs , r f . ,. “ i v H ♦. : •«• s-ut Y ; f ' , •■ . We are about to take our places in the world as useful citizens. Our time in the classroom and on the athletic fields has been instrumental in preparing us to achieve our selected goals. The trials and tribulations of the past four years will, in all probability, be replaced by problems of much wider scope. Consequently, in the not too distant future, this classbook should bring back memories of carefree days. 1961-1965: Our days at Lawrence High School were highlighted by important LOUIS ABATE Course: College Ambition: To become an Architect Hobbies: Stamp Collecting; Sports German Club; Math Club DAVID K. It is the task of our educators to enlighten the minds of each students with the knowledge required to sustain a true democracy. This knowledge, coupled with wisdom and devotion to God, represents the basic founda¬ tion upon which America is built. If our way of life is to continue, high standards of education must be maintained. A well-educated America will assure the existence of human freedom and liberty forever. SCANNING COLLEGE CATALOGS Carol Fienman, Michael Edelstein, Sheila Flagler BIRDS AND MAMMALS Arthur Falcon, Jack Jeffrey The Lawrence High School offers six major fields of study to its 2700 students. A student may specialize in college pre¬ paratory, business, nursing, manual arts or home economics. A general course is also offered to students who do not wish to specialize. Subject matter within these courses is sometimes similar in name; however, different forms and presentations meet the needs of the individual student. English and mathe¬ matics of different types are offered to students of all courses. Civics, problems in democracy, economics, United States, an¬ cient, medieval and modern world history, available in vary¬ ing degrees, comprise the Social Studies curriculum. Physical education and choral music are required of all students to in¬ sure complete development of the person both physically and mentally. It is through such a diversified curriculum that the teachers and administrators can develop both the college-bound and terminal student for latter life. STUDY HALL 90 ADMIRING THE ART DISPLAY U. S. HISTORY DISPLAY Frank Rapisardi, Ralph Woekel, Linda Watson, Ruth McPherson Homogeneous grouping enables students to compete with others of similar ability and allows accelerated courses to be offered for college preparatory students. Standards have been raised and modern methods and equipment adopted in all areas of study. This insures that students of the Lawrence High School are in a position to compete on an equal basis for ad¬ mission to leading colleges and universities. The science program has undergone vast changes in recent years. National Science Foundation grants have made it possi¬ ble to equip laboratories with the most modern equipment possible. Facilities are available in chemistry, physics, biology, botany and physiology. Several faculty members have used national and industrial grants to attend institutes throughout the country thereby keeping abreast of the latest in science teaching methods as well as developments in their individual subject matter areas. Latin, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Italian cover a wide scope of linguistic opportunities. Tape recorders, records and other modern equipment allow the teacher to present varied instructional methods. Approximately 600 students are enrolled in the business education program. The business department is subdivided into two major catagories; accounting and bookkeeping. The students study stenography, bookkeeping, and typing as well as use of all types of business machines. Recently, this de¬ partment has incorporated instructioa on IBM key punch machines into the overall curriculum thus insuring that stu¬ dents will find a place in our rapidly changing world. These students are readily employed by local firms and many con¬ tinue their education at schools of business and colleges. It moved to its present location in 1900 when the old building” was constructed at the corner of Lawrence and Haverhill streets. The rising population of the city and subsequent increasing enrollment soon taxed the capacity of the building and in 1924 the James D. Horne annex was opened to pro¬ vide adequate classroom space. While there have been no additional build¬ ings constructed since that time, rennovations have kept pace with the changing times. Science laboratories have been remodeled and an audio-visual room constructed to insure up-to-date facilities for those in attendance. Equip¬ ment has also been constantly improved. Today, the teachers have every available teaching aid from motion pictures to closed circuit television at their disposal. The teachers and administrators realize that it is only through such modernization programs that the student can compete on an equal basis for college or occupational positions with pupils of other schools. In addition to allowing specialization in various fields, these programs provide the student with a knowledge of English, mathematics, history, science, and foreign languages to develop an over¬ all educational awareness. This program is also instrumental in keeping the drop-out level in the city of Lawrence to the minimum and providing well-trained citizens. Extra-curricular activities afford an excellent opportunity to accomplish this. The students who are active in these organizations gain insight into the political and social obligations which will be a major part of their adult lives. The organizations are many and diversifield. The active pupils have an opportunity to enhance themselves physically, culturally, socially and intellectually through participation in these activities. Pupils who have enjoyed the companionship offered during the projects conducted by these organizations are likely to be active members of t heir community in later life. :: if m mt ?h ran 1 I - Pa - ' - ; . | | . mm, M t %. In recent years, the athletic program, under Director Ralph J. Wolfendale, has been involved in an expansion program. 1964 and 1965 have seen the addition of bas¬ ketball and softball to girls’ athletics as well as wrestling and weight lifting to the boys’ program. 1965 and 1966 brings the promise of hockey already started on an in¬ formal basis. With the broadening of the program, it is possible for a greater number of students to take part. Through athletics the students gains a realization of teamwork from experience, fair play, and the rewards of hard work on the practice field. Before the team had taken the field for its first game, injuries had ruled regular ends Ralph Woekel and Joe Ponte out for the season. The team was finally built around veterans Sam Aliano and co-captains Bill Laliberty and Louis Polizotti. Bright spots in the otherwise dull campaign for Lancer fans were few. One came on a rainswept field at Beverly when the young Lancers gave the highly touted Panthers a ding-dong battle before superior members wore them down. Another occurred in November, when for 47 minutes the Blue and White pushed the Hillies all over the gridiron only to lose in the waning seconds. Despite its losing record, the team showed flashes of brilliance and with only two starters graduating, the fall of 1965 should provide plenty of excitement for Lawrence High football fans. VARSITY BASKETBALL Led by Captain Dennis Levesque, the 64-65 edition of Lawrence High Hoopsters surprised the most seasoned fans. With only one starter, Bill Laliberte, possessing rebounding height, the Blue and White were in the thick of the battle for the Essex County title and qualified for the Tech” for the second consecutive year. With Laliberte’s strong rebounding and Levesque and Silverwatch scoring, the Lancers pulled off several major upsets during the campaign. For the second year in a row, they managed to defeat Central Catholic, and their upset victory over Lynn English knocked the Bulldogs out of the county title race. Captain Dennis Levesque was selected on many all-op¬ ponent and all-scholastic squads and his total of 519 points gave him the highest per game average ever in the Greater Lawrence area. Led by the hitting of Captain Bob Hilgendorf and their baseman, Walter Burns, the Lancers were shut out only twice during the season. Sophomore Fred Dezan, a strong-armed southpaw, proved a big asset in the pitching department. Dezan’s development along with veterans Stephen Campagnone, Thomas McGowan and Kevin Wolfendale gave the Blue and White a quartet of excellent twirlers. Coached by Mrs. Ann Furn¬ eaux of the Physical Education Department, the team proved a worthwhile supplement to the girls’ program. Both junior varsity and varsity squads were organized and more than 20 girls were able to participate in games with other schools. Girls softball is now under serious consideration in an effort to expand the athletic program for the weaker” sex. TAP-OFF 145 Greg Kent makes his move. GREG KENT LEADS TRACKSTERS Lead by Greg Kent the Lawrence High school track team experienced moderate success during the 64-65 season. Kent continued to turn in record breaking performances throughout the county. The junior class distance runner was undefeated in dual meet competition both in cross-county and indoor meets. Kent also brought further fame to the school by placing third in the National Interscholastic meet at Madison Square Garden in New York City. A1 Decocq, Armand Houle, Glenn Keating and Elliot Farnsworth also were consistent point scorers in their events. Coach Ernie Perry expressed the hope that the outdoor team with plenty of training facilities available will provide plenty of tough competition for members of the county track loop.
