His life of inspirational leadership, unselfish patriotic devotion, and unflagging courage in the face of most trying obstacles arouses the admiration of the youth of America. Within the pages of this volume, a pictorial story of the Lawrence High School unfolds. The educational philosophy, physical facilities and day-to-day experiences of its students, all are geared toward the attainment of ideals associated with this great spokesman for the Free World who now belongs to the Ages”. Rapid development of automation in the Atomic Era will leave no future for the unskilled and the un¬ educated. Modern schools must shape their courses of study to prepare the citizens of tomorrow for proper places in a highly civilized society of boundless opportunities. 5 ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY Lawrence High School is staffed by ninety educators, ranging from veterans with more than forty years of service down to recent college grad¬ uates who are just entering the profession. Dedicated to the dissemination of learning, wisdom and experience combine with enthusiasm and idealism. In his inaugural address, President Kennedy declared: Let the word go forth from this time and place to friends and foe alike that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans, born in this century.” The administration and faculty of the Lawrence High School are guiding their students toward the fulfillment of their destinies in a democratic society. Devotion to the ideals of John Fitzgerald Kennedy brings strength to the determina¬ tion of the youth of America to battle the evil • of com¬ munistic forces with greater knowledge and wisdom. In the world of tomorrow, there will be an increasing demand fot skilled technicians of all kinds. Ninety-two teachers offer instruction in the college preparatory, business, nursing, general, home economics and manual arts courses. English and mathe¬ matics are presented in different levels to meet the needs of the college, business and terminal divisions. Science with laboratory facilities is available in chemistry, physics, biol¬ ogy, botany and physiology. Six foreign languages, Latin, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian, cover a wide range of linguistic opportunities. Social Science embraces United States, ancient, mediaeval and modern world history, along with civics and economics. The business course is divided into the major fields of accounting and stenography, while especial attention is paid to office machine practice. Vocational training in manual arts and domestic science open up avenues for specialized programs for terminal pupils. Music and art awaken cultural tastes. Physical edu¬ cation emphasizes the value of a sound mind in a strong body. Lawrence High School has modernized its science cur¬ riculum to keep abreast of the most advanced thinking in this area of learning. An extensive modernization of facilities has been undertaken. Several faculty members have taken advantage of scholarship grants from indus¬ trial foundations to attend summer school courses at leading universities in order to become acquainted with new procedures in teaching physics, chemistry, biology, botany and physiology.. A high school diploma is required in almost every field of endeavor today. It is one standard that is used to separate the skilled from the unskilled. Its philosophy of education calls for giving the student a certain familiarity with many kinds of skilled labor. Instruction is available in machine shop, woodworking, sheet metal, electricity, print¬ ing and forging. In addition to these vocational endeavors, mechanical drawing and applied mathematics are regular parts of the plan of studies. The rise of automation in modern industry is rapidly forcing un¬ skilled workers into the ranks of the unemployed. Kennedy’s first acts after his inaugura¬ tion was the institution of the President’s Committee on Physical Fitness. Nationally known football coach Bud’’ Wilkinson of Oklahoma University became the chairman. Public attention was drawn to the necessity for athletics and gymnastic work at all scholastic levels, from the college down to the primary grades. Physical training has always been compulsory for both boys and girls at Lawrence High School. TUMBLING EXERCISES FOLK DANCING 99 EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SECTION With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love.” This exhortation by President John F. Kennedy cannot be carried out by book learning” alone. Modern education must supply an outlet to satisfy the crying need for leadership in the complex political, industrial and social life of the second half of the twentieth century. The youth of today must gain confidence through participation in activities for further self- expression in order to advance the cause of God and Country in the long tivilight struggle” against World Communism. Lawrence High School presents to its student body many avenues for carrying scholastic pursuits beyond the narrow confines of classroom periods. Under proper faculty supervision, a score of extra-curricular activities enrich the program of studies. LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL OSWALD W. VOGEL, Bandmaster BAND, 1963-1964 KENNETH E. Since there are two hundred candi¬ dates for the dozen places on the squad, positions are gained only after surviving a series of grueling elimina¬ tions. Scholastic superiority and a freedom from dis¬ cipline marks are necessary requirements. Every cheerleader must have a summer and a winter uniform. The former is made of royal blue chino mater¬ ial with a mandarin collar and rolled-up sleeves. For colder weather, the girls wear navy blue slacks and sweaters, white blouses and gloves. The color combina¬ tion of the captain’s outfit is just the reverse of that worn by the rest of the squad. Mrs. Ann Furneaux of the physical education depart¬ ment serves as coach. She puts her charges through stiff workouts three days a week during the football season, so that they can master the numerous formations which are exhibited at the regular games. During the basket¬ ball season, practice sessions are less frequent. SENIOR CLASS PYRAMID PINWHEEL FORMATION 105 Sharon Testa, Rilla Tacy, Barbara Cohen LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL MAJORETTES 1963-1964 The Majorettes is an auxiliary marching unit of the Lawrence High School Band. The regular members, clad in blue uniforms with white trim, are lead by three officers who wear white with blue trim. The well known Gingras Sisters, operators of a local dancing school, coach the girls and plan out their intricate formations. Competition for places on the squad has always been very keen, because before this year there had never been any form of girls’ athletics in the school. Thus, the Majorettes and Cheerleaders were the only two avenues open to feminine devotees to extra-curricular physical exercise. The famous poet Robert Frost, who passed away recently, held membership while he was an undergraduate in the Class of 1892. Mr. Joseph X. O ' Neill, head of the Business Department, is the sponsor. Monday night debates are regularly scheduled on topics of current interest. By way of diversion, mock trials and oratorical contests have occasionally supplanted the normal routine. During the present year, Lawrence High School has joined the Interscholastic De¬ bating League of Eastern Massachusetts. Presented with an opportunity to engage in outside competition for the first time in a decade, the Boys’ Debating Society finds its activities appealing to many more students. Because there is a special novice class as well as the varsity speakers, twice as many boys can take part in these meetings with a dozen outside schools. Any girl can become a member by attending the Monday night meetings at seven o’clock in the Assembly Hall. In fact, this is one of the few organizations that is open to freshmen and sophomores as well as upperclassmen. Poise, proper diction and cleverness of speech are the three funda¬ mental aims of the group. At each weekly debate, a best speaker is named. The Mary A. Lawrence High has bettered its editorial coverage measurably in the past decade from following the advice of yearbook critics at Columbia and the University of Minnesota. However, Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan insists that the staff can never rest on last year’s laurels. Over half the price of production has been realized through ad¬ vertising promotions. The goal of this organization was the introduction of a physical training program into every school in the United States down through the elementary area. President Kennedy himself engaged in strenuous exercise during his entire lifetime. Even while burdened by the cares of the Chief Executive’s position, he found time to participate in golf, tennis and touch football at Hyannisport. As a Harvard undergraduate, he had been a member of the varsity swimming team. When the PT-109 exploded in World War II, his skill in water sports enabled him to save an injured crewman by dragging him five miles through the Pacific Ocean under the darkness of night to shore. Quoting Boston Herald columnist Bill Cunningham, the President pro¬ claimed, In team sports almost alone in this luxury-softened land, has our youth sought and found discipline. There he has learned courage, sac¬ rifice, devotion to an ideal, respect for the rights of others, submergence of self for the good of the whole, hard work, fortitude—in a word, man¬ hood.” M cHASl- ft CC O ?£g U£ ( c ' iuji y SSXMMO (£■ ■ M povovw gpee r ( J ' i! £ irza£ blLO J4PM V _pu P£dPP£ OUILIP (P jluevf Mh 1 £JCUAU ,. wwm( V ' AUUH- POlVTt (£J io6 «r v Kp teewov flCUAW X, poesr(ejh Mtren u k .W, ’ ’ 8E0B£EJA J fr M. GRIDIRON TEAM MAKES A STRONG FINISH Handicapped by a lack of experienced players, the Lancer football eleven dropped three out of the four opening contests before catching fire and winning three straight in mid-season. A plucky band of Blue White warriors entered the climatic clashes with both Haverhill and Lowell as definite underdogs. After two closely contested matches, Coach Callagy’s boys wound up with a pair of creditable ties. Indeed, the much heavier Hillies” did just beat the clock by fifty seconds in grinding out the equalizing score. Against Lowell, Lawrence held a wide statistical edge but pushed across only one touchdown out of five penetrations of the Red Gray twenty yard line. Highlights of the campaign were beating Central Catholic for the first time since 1951 and qualifying for the Eastern Mass. Tournament. The Lancers were never badly beaten all winter. In fact, three of the six defeats resulted from poor foul shooting, when the Blue White was out-scored at the charity line by 17, 7 and 16 points respectively. Playing on the larger floor at the new Kane School proved a boon to the boys. Lawrence quintets had always been handicapped previously by hav ing to practice and stage home contests in a bandbox gymnasium. Spectator comfort and an excellent lighting system brought out large crowds to cheer the team in the new surroundings. The 1964 basketeers depended chiefly on the deadly accuracy of Art Good- ale, who scored 430 tallies in nineteen games. Twice he reached 40 points. On other productive evenings, he poured 36, 34, 33, 28, 28, 23, 21 and 21 through th iron hoop. Substantial help came from Hilgendorf, Reusch, Campagnone, Savastano, and Casey. Denny Levesque averaged ten points per contest after becoming eligible in mid-season. 135 r i i I 1964 INDOOR TRACK SQUAD REAR ROW: Peter Dineen, Michael Gallagher, William Lawrence, Alfred Decocq, Frank Titone, Elliot Farnsworth, James Gann, Rich¬ ard Bateman, Roland Savastano, Jeffrey Grossman. Greg Kent established three new school records: 2:22:8 for 1,000 yards; 4:29:1 for the mile; 9:37 for two miles. His two mile mark set a new Massachusetts schoolboy standard. Leroy Seeton equaled the LHS record of six seconds in the 45 yard high hurdles. Unbeaten in dual action, he established new course records at Lawrence, Lowell, Salem, Beverly and Andover Academy. Captain Frank Perry came in second or third in all dual meets and gained eighth place in the State Championship. Emphasis in cross country is on a team effort, since the first five finishers on each side count in the scoring. However, an augury of bad things to come was evident in the opening game against St. John’s when the players dissipated a seven run lead and lost 10-9. Perhaps the new diamond at Memor¬ ial Stadium carried a first-year jinx. In any event, the Lancers never realized their poten¬ tial. The failure to hit with men on bases is evident from the fact that the team scored over four runs on only three occasions in twenty-one outings. Thirteen times Lawrence was held to two tallies or less, including four shutouts. In most of the contests, the local pitchers twirled well enough to earn a victory with a nominal amount of support from their batsmen. Prospects look very favorable for 1964, as this classbook goes to press. In addition to Captain-Elect Bob Hilgendorf, ten other lettermen with considerable experience, are striving for a much better season. 1963 SEASON’S RECORD Lawrence .... .... 9 St. John’s Prep . . 10 Lawrence .... .... 0 Lowell . 7 Lawrence .... 1 Beverly . . 3 Lawrence . .. .... 2 Lynn English . 5 Lawrence . .... 3 Gloucester . . 4 Lawrence .... .... 4 Saugus . . 2 Lawrence .... .... 3 Peabody . . 2 Lawrence .... 1 Lynn Classical . . 14 Lawrence 2 Salem . . 6 Lawrence .... .... 0 St. John’s Prep . . 2 Lawrence .... .... 3 Haverhill . . 9 Lawrence .... .... 1 Beverly . . 3 Lawrence .... .... 0 Lynn English . . 6 Lawrence .... .... 2 Gloucester . . 1 Lawrence .... 1 Lowell . . 7 Lawrence .... .... 0 Saugus . 1 Lawrence .... 1 Phillips Andover . . 8 Lawrence .... .... 4 Peabody . . 2 Lawrence .... 4 Lynn Classical . 5 Lawrence .... .... 6 Salem 10 Lawrence .... .... 2 Haverhill . 1 LAWRENCE Won 5 Lost 16 BOB HILGENDORF BATTING 139 CENTER COURT TAP-OFF Beverly Ann Pica, Audrey Hamlin, Linda Ferruolo, Betty Bernier, Mrs. Ann Furneaux SCRAMBLE ALONG THE SIDELINE Gail McCann, Carol Iskols, Susan Plonowski, Rosemary Mannion, Betty Bernier GIRLS ' BASKETBALL For the first time in its 116 years of existence, Lawrence High has finally started a sports program for girls. Sullivan and the teach¬ ing staff for their forbearance during the numerous interruptions of regular routine in order to complete photographic coverage for the yearbook. Through the guidance of Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan, a thousand unrelated de¬ tails were woven together to bring the project to a successful conclusion. Credit lines are given to the Naval Recruiting Station on Atlantic Avenue, Boston for the Sinking of PT-109 on page 4, to Fabian Bachrach of Newton for the picture of President Kennedy on page 5, and to the Boston Herald for the cartoon drawings on page 132. Professional photography throughout the book was performed by Loring Studios. Mrs. Madeline Wood, manager of their Law¬ rence office, took charge of appointments for the Senior Album Section. Finally, financial solvency of the undertaking owes much to the generous response of local merchants to the appeal of the advertising committee. 141 Congratulations and the best of luck! We at Loring are proud of the part we have had in helping to make your classbook a permanent reminder of your school years, recording with photo¬ graphs one of the happiest and most exciting times of your life!
