I . .H f' 1 N 5 -Vt. 4' 15 A ' LL I - ROBERT MAYOR 84 MRS. JOHN J. BUCKLEY ESCORTING ROBERT FROST Entering New School for Official Ceremony LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL - Robert Lee Frost, the unofficial poet laureate of the United States, is the most distinguished living graduate of the Lawrence High School. During his undergraduate days, 1888-1892, secondary education accentuated the classics. Latin, Greek, mathematics, philosophy and history were featured, while English did not fit into the curriculum at all. Although the population of the city was then more than fifty thousand, the senior class which had Frost giving the valedictory address numbered fewer than twenty students. They repre- sented an intellectual aristocracy. The winner of four Pulitzer Prizes and holder of many honorary degrees from universities throughout the world, Frost returned to Lawrence on January 7, 1962, on the eve of his eighty-seventh birthday to be the guest of honor at the formal dedication of a million dollar elementary school which has been named after him. His warm reception in his old home town has been well expressed by a student re- porter, covering the event for the Lawrencian: Ar Rohert Frost rtood on the Jtage, talking not to nr but with nr, the rtage Jeerned to fade away and become DEDICATED ON - SEVENTY YEARS LATER inrtead an eary chair heride a farmhouse fireplace, and we the audience hecanie gzteftr in thir rnan'r home, liftening enthralled to taler of hir New England. Obscure and unheralded, Frost had left Lawrence High School seven decades ago. Pursuing both the career of a teacher and a farmer, he wrote verse for twenty years before his genius was first recognized in a foreign land. From his poem The Road Not Taken , we may draw an analogy between education in 1892 and at the present time: Tivo roadr diverged in a wood, and I - I tooh the one lerr traveled hy. Respectfully the Class of 1962 dedicates this yearbook to Robert Frost. Through its pages, the road he did not take, Lawrence High School - Seventy Yearr After, unfolds. Thirty times as many will graduate in 1962. Their course of instruction is varied. In place of the narrow classical tradi- tion of 1892, the poet can see how all the children of all the people prepare themselves to meet the great challenge of the second half of the twentieth century. Since its organization in 1925 by the late Robert E. Sault, the Lawrence High School Band has maintained a high stand- ard of excellence. Bandmaster Oswald W. Vogel directs more than eighty young musicians who devote countless hours to mastering their instruments and executing intricate marching formations. Besides appearing at football games, the group participates in patriotic and civic affairs during the year. At the annual New England Musical Festival, the Lawrence High Band has won many commendations for its performances in competition with other outstanding secondary school units. Closely allied to the Band are the Majorettes and Cheet- leaders. Because no forms of athletics are open to girls, the chief avenue for feminine expression outside the Classroom lies in the direction of these two activities. At least three hundred apply for the twenty-one majorette and twelve cheerleader positions. Only after a series of eliminations can the successful candidates be determined. Mrs. Beatrice G. McCarthy and Miss Lois M. Gingras coach the Majorettes. Miss Irene M. Carraher supervises the Cheerleaders. . -... Much club time is devoted also to preparation for college entrance examinations. Although both clubs had entered the fray with perfect slates of eight triumphs each, the Lancers were favored by two touchdowns, because of a better record against five opponents. The Blue 8a White gained the lead early in the final period, but the up-river forces equalized the score with only fifty seconds remaining on the clock. Thus four schools, Lawrence, Lowell, Arlington and Everett, had to share Class A laurels for 1961 with eight wins and one draw. Highlighting the campaign were outstanding performances against Beverly and Haverhill. The former eleven, co-champion with Brockton in 1960, suffered its only setback in two years at the hands of the Lancers, 12-8. Lawrence swamped Haverhill, 34-0, the largest margin of victory ever gained by the Blue 8a White over the Brown 8: Gold in their seventy game series, dating back to 1895, the year after Robert Frost graduated from Lawrence High School. rib. LANCER BASKETEERS BREAK EVEN IN 1962 An even split in eighteen appearances was a creditable per- formance for the Blue 8: White hoop team. The boys were off to a slow start when veteran mentor Basil Bova suffered an injury, and a new coach had to be found on short notice. jack Barry, who captained the Lancers about ten years ago, stepped into the breach and molded together a representative quintet. Four football stars, Captain Vic Petzy, joe Celia, Bill Fitzgibbons and Norm Poulin, were veterans from the previous season. However, the high scorer, averaging twenty points per game, was a newcomer to the varsity, George Bennett, who had only played previously with the jV's. A delay in the completion of the new Kane School compelled the Lancers to use the sub-standard court at Lawrence High School. Any team forced to stage half its schedule in such limited quarters is at a disadvantage competing on regulation surfaces away from home. Better prospects are in store for l963, because the freshman five won eighteen out of twenty, and several underclassmen looked good with the junior varsity. TRACKMEN MAKE CREDITABLE SHOWING Two wins and six losses seem to represent a very poor potential in track. How- ever, indoor results at Lawrence High are very deceptive because the boys have to train under woefully inadequate facilities, The true caliber of the squad is realized out of doors in the spring, where all schools can compete under similar conditions. Through three years, 1959, 1960 and 1961, the Lancers won only five out of a total of twenty-three indoor dual meets. In the same period, outdoors during the spring, Lawrence won twenty-four and lost only six against the same schools that had outclassed them in the winter months. f I .., Shot Putter Dante Savastano Broad jumper Bob Keating 1962 INDOOR TRACK RECORD LHS .....,.. 31 Andover High 46 LHS .....,.. 31 Reading .,.,.... 46 LHS .,...,.. 40 Andover Acad. LANCER NINE UNDERGOES A REBUILDING YEAR Starting the season with only a handful of experienced players, the Blue 8: White ball tossers were mostly sophomores and juniors. Coach Regan had to experiment with several combinations before he could fill the holes left by the preceding year's graduation. Over their last nine games, the boys won six, so the overall slate read nine victories out of nineteen. Out of the ten defeats which the team suffered, four were by one run and two others by two runs. Since only five 1961 lettermen have departed from the scene, the Lancer nine should be much more successful in the next campaign. l '1'l'.l f M 's '. The philosophy of public secondary education has undergone revolutionary revision in keeping with the social and political movements of the intervening period. The great poet said in the introduction to the 1949 edition of his Complete Poemr: Originality and initiative are what I ask for my country . Throughout these pages, the Class of 1962 has been striving to attain some small measure of those worthy ideals. ?
