Administration and Faculty Senior Section .... Extra-Cur ■ alar Activities . Varsity Atb;etics Student Life .... ”It was the best of times; it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom; it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief; it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of light; it was the season of darkness; it was the spring of hope; it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us; we had nothing before us; we were all going direct to Heaven; we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.” —Charles Dickens These opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities describe perfectly the cross¬ currents and inconsistencies which are present in both America and the world during the decade of the sixties”. Man’s mastery of science has relieved the human race from the drudgery of bygone days, but it has also created the Frankenstein of atomic warfare. Wages and bank deposits have reached an all-time high, but five million Americans are unemployed, and the automo¬ bile factories of Detroit have cut back produaion, because there are one million unsold new cars in dealers’ showrooms. The United States has restored the war-ravaged countries of the world, so that prosperity abounds abroad, but the flight of capital from America has caused gold reserves at home to fall to a dangerous level below eighteen billion dollars. Educational opportunities for American youth have reached new heights, but the number of applicants for college has likewise increased so that all who can benefit from university training cannot find classroom space. Although more scholarship aid is available than ever before, the rising cost of education has precluded advanced schooling from the reach of thousands of intellectually capable high school graduates. The modern day secondary school must meet the demands of a rapidly progressing scientific age. Higher standards of excellence have to be attained- to insure the continued existence of the democratic way of life. Today’s youth is called upon to meet tomorrow’s challenge. To reach the goals of the New Frontier, the high school student must seek knowledge, gain physical superi¬ ority, assume the duties of good citizenship, and achieve the worthy use of leisure time. This yearbook depicts the senior class of the Lawrence High School in quest of those worthy ideals. 6 Class President Anthony Fusco ignites the fuse of a rocket built by the Mathematics Club of the Lawrence High School to symbolize American youth’s acceptance of the challenge of the Space Age. Superintendent of Schools James F. Hennessey Headmaster Daniel F. Sullivan Located thirty miles north of Boston in a city of 71,000 people, the Lawrence High School was first established in 1849- Training is offered to 2,300 students in the college preparatory, nurses preparatory, business, manual arts, home economics and general categories. Proper preparation for the atomic age of tomorrow can be acquired in each class¬ ification Mr. T. Howard Derby Miss Marion D. Barker Marion D. Barker Science Edith Y. Receiving a diploma signifies that progress has been made by youth in his effort to prepare himself for his place in the world of Tomorrow. This commencement is a stepping-off point. The individual’s progress will be determined largely by the manner in which he applies himself to the great task ahead. 4 October 4 19 7: Russians Send Sputnik I Into Orbit PATRICIA A. This was a remarkable improvement over the preceding autumn, when the Blue White compiled a mediocre three, five and one slate. Outweighed in every contest, the Lancers played smart, heads-up football and forced the breaks to go their way through sheer grit and determination. Joe Celia blossomed into an all-star forward passer. Norm Poulin and A1 Boutin were two explosive break-away runners who dazzled the spec¬ tators with their many long gains. Competing in the hotly contested Essex County League, the Blue White broke even in six¬ teen games. In non-league play, the Lancers bested Methuen twice and Manchester Central once. Lawrence had a great one-two punch in their lanky stars. Chuck Lonardo and Captain Tom Orlando, both of whom are about six feet, five inches in height. Between them, they poured nearly 600 points through the hoops. However, the Lawrence scoring punch fell off considerably on the part of the remaining basketeers. Nobody else could average ten points a game. The Lancers were an in-and-out club all winter. At times they rose to the heights, as when they held league champion Beverly to less than a ten point spread on two occasions. However, the boys had bad nights when they were beaten by about thirty points. Prospects for next season are bright. Several veterans are return¬ ing. The new Osgood Street School gym will serve as a home court. Lawrence should do much better away from the narrow confines of the high school playing surface. 1961 BASKETBALL RECORD Lawrence .49 Peabody . .48 Lawrence .41 Lynn Classical .... .40 Lawrence .51 Beverly . .58 Lawrence .50 Salem . .79 Lawrence .57 Lynn English . .87 Lawrence . 63 Gloucester . .80 Lawrence .89 Saugus . .40 Lawrence .51 Peabody . .62 Lawrence .62 Haverhill . .59 Lawrence .72 Lynn Classical ... .70 Lawrence .58 Beverly . .67 Lawrence .45 Salem . .59 Lawrence .61 Lynn English . . 43 Lawrence .42 Gloucester . .50 Lawrence .93 Saugus . .49 Lawrence .66 Manchester . .59 Lawrence .68 Haverhill . .52 Lawrence .63 Methuen . .51 Lawrence .60 Methuen . .50 Lawrence won 11; lost 8 INDIVIDUAL SCORING Goals Fouls Total Lonardo . . 154 82 390 Orlando . . Outside of the league, the Lancers could score only one triumph in six contests. Losing the services of veteran catcher Bob Riendeau early in the cam¬ paign was a severe blow to the Blue and White cause. Outstanding bats¬ men throughout the season were Captain Tom O’Neil and Captain-Elect Pat Greeley. Bob Grudenski enjoyed considerable success as the number one pitching choice of the Lancers. ’ ' I -■ 126 LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS LHS STANDING: Coach William Regan, Manager Edward Connolly, John Batts, Kenneth Ralph, Patrick Greeley, Raymond Palmigiano, Joseph Cataudella, Timothy Lehane, Manager John Mon- sour. To some, this record may not sound very promising, but for a squad that has very poor facilities for indoor drills, it is quite creditable. The real ability of the Lawrence athletes becomes evident during the outdoor season. In the past two spring campaigns, the Blue White has won 17 and lost 3 in competition on the cinder oval against the same caliber of opposition they face dur¬ ing the winter months indoors. DEVELOPMENT OF CHICKS Frances Landers A tremendous increase of enrollment in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics has taken place in the last four years. Courses of this nature offer endless opportunities for individual study and research. Through the Sci¬ ence Fair, the general public may become aware of the scope of the new scholastic revolution. Rather than give an apprentice training in a particular trade, the curriculum presents an oppor¬ tunity for the individual to gain familiarity with the elements of several kinds of skilled labor. Instruction is available in machine shop practice, automobile mechanics, woodworking, sheet metal, printing, forging and electricity. Besides spending a double period each day in vocational endeavor, every¬ one in the course studies me chanical drawing and applied mathematics. Here mem¬ bers of the Manual Arts Course produce the student newspaper, The Lawrencian, which appears every month from October through May. The printers also issue scores of official forms and blanks to meet the requirements of the administration and the teaching staff. CONCLUSION As the curtain falls on the academic year of 1960-1961, more than four hundred fifty seniors are about to graduate from the Lawrence High School. As the foreword of this book aptly suggests: h is the best of times; it is the worst of times. Unbounded opportunities, resulting from the tre¬ mendous scientific breakthrough which has taken place since World War II, are opening up for those who are preparing themselves by proper applica¬ tion to their studies. Others who are conducting themselves with supine indifference will experience disappointment and chagrin when they fail to meet the demands of the New Frontier. Across the thirty-four double-page spreads of the Senior Section of this volume are catalogued a series of historical items which have been part of the news picture during the period that the Class of 1961 has been pass¬ ing through high school. How far the world has progressed in such a brief space of time! On the local scene, urban redevelopment is changing the face of down¬ town Lawrence, as the city strives to keep abreast with the kaleidoscopic progress of the era in its struggle for survival with suburban shopping centers and the threat of a diminishing tax base. As the individual gradu¬ ate departs, he must likewise set himself on a pattern of personal redevelop¬ ment to gain his heritage in a fast changing civilization. CONDEMNED BY URBAN REDEVELOPMENT Large Block on Hampshire Street The Class of 1961 extends thanks to Headmaster Daniel F. Sullivan and the entire faculty for their cooperation in making this classbook possible. Rob¬ ert Talbot, area manager for Loring Studios, was most helpful in the arranging of facilities for the taking of pictures. Robert C. Moore, representative of the publisher, T. O’Toole Sons, offered techni¬ cal advice most generously. The patronage of the advertisers helped to bring down the net cost of the book measurably. Last but not least, the experience and patience of Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan guided the staff to the successful completion of a difficult task.
