OF CONTENTS . 6 FOREWORD Monday’s child is fair of face; Tuesday’s child is full of grace; Wednesday’s child is full of woe; Thursday’s child has far to go; Friday’s child is loving and giving; Saturday’s child must work for a living.” -Anonymous Saturday’s Child” is a most appropriate theme for the I960 edition of The Blue White. Today’s student must really work for a living” to attain a position of leadership. While this book features many candid photographs of seniors en¬ gaged in after-school employment, working for a living” means more than aug¬ menting one’s spending money with a part-time job. Saturday’s Child” symbol¬ izes the more exacting demands that are made on today’s high school graduate as he faces the world. In his father’s day, the mere possession of a diploma and a creditable scholastic record guaranteed admission to college or a fast start in the business world. However, in the second half of the twentieth century, standards have become most exacting. Saturday’s Child” must study harder and enter into the extra-curricular activities of his school to prove that he belongs to the intel¬ lectual upper class. This book depicts the many sides of student life in the Lawrence High School in a city of 75,000 people, located thirty miles north of Boston. Training is offered to 2300 pupils in college preparatory, nurse’s preparatory, business, manual arts, home economics, and general course categories. Saturday’s Child” can be found in each classification. 6 DEDICATION Headmaster Augustine J. Lawlor retires this June after forty-nine years de¬ voted to the service of the Lawrence High School. Beginning as a teacher of chemistry in 1911, Mr. Lawlor rose through the academic ranks to become suc¬ cessively a department head, a submaster, and finally in 1948, headmaster. Re¬ spectfully the Class of I960 dedicates this current volume of The Blue White to the thirteenth headmaster of the Lawrence High School. Mr. Lawlor’s period of administrative leadership has witnessed many pro¬ gressive improvements. Shortly after his accession, he brought the freshman class back to the main building from the Oliver School, where it had been located for a decade. He resurrected the Alumni Association and established the annual Alumni Night as a homecoming occasion for both young and old graduates. The L-Men’s Club was reorganized to put new interest in the welfare of athletics. Scholarship programs were started which have grown into perpetual trusts. The Band Parents’ Association inaugurated Talent Night. Weekly Friday night record hops became part of school life. Pictures of athletic teams dating back as far as 1881 were framed and placed on the walls on the first floor of the annex. A half century of teaching comes to an end for Mr. Lawlor with the I960 graduation. Thousands of men and women are indebted to him for his counsel and understanding during their high school days. 7 FACULTY SECTION Desirous to Learn Is Saturday’s Child Teachers Must Guide Him And Set His Course Abigail Condon Mary Callahan Gillis Dean of Girls Head of Home Economics Dept. A few of the most advanced pupils of the electricity course set up microphones and tape recorders for a variety of functions. On inclement days, these young men also double as disc jockeys for the dancing at indoor recess in the gymnasium. The dean of girls needs a dozen volunteers to perform routine clerical work on her voluminous scholastic and dis¬ ciplinary records. More than a score of girls serve as alumni secretaries in Room 219, where they process considerable correspondence daily for the Alumni Association. Vogel, the thirteen piece student dance band practices on Monday evenings in the gymnasium. The Musical Lancers are not in competition with working bandsmen, but they appear at the L-Men’s dances in conjunction with a disc jockey who has been hired for the entire season. Mr. Vogel believes that the young mu¬ sicians should not tax their energies too much at any one time, so he limits them to an hour in each of their appearances. The Musical Lancers, now in their second year of operation, are extremely popular with the record hop patrons. The valuable experience which they have acquired has given all the boys an excellent opportunity to become accomplished musicians. Probably some of them will be able to play under contract with professional groups later, and earn part of the cost of their college education. BRASS SECTION Rear: H. Publications Class In Session 111 DISCUSSING THE LAYOUT Rosalinda Scuderi, Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan, Barbara Valeska. This annual has been published continuously since 1945. Popularly known as the yearbook”, the publi¬ cation is really a senior classbook, because the gradu¬ ating class considers it as personal property. Probably costs might be reduced by including ar albumr sec¬ tion of underclassmen. However, such pictures from 40 home rooms would of necessity have to be small and meaningless. Therefore, Lawrence High School sticks to the old tradition of a memory book”, con¬ trary to the general trend toward representation of all students. The L-Men’s Club is composed of the graduate athletic lettermen of the Lawrence High School. Since its reorganization in 1949, this association has not spared either time or energy in its efforts on behalf of the undergraduates. The group does not confine its activi¬ ties to the realm of athletics, but also promotes the weekly series of L-Men’s Dances in the gymnasium on Friday nights, which have become an integral part of the social life of the students. The first Annual Homecoming Game was a special promotion of the club last fall. Reserved sections wete set aside for returning graduates at the annual Haverhill gridiron encouter on November 15. An election among the student body chose the homecoming queen and her six attendants. The winners were escorted to the stadium in open converti¬ bles at the head of a long parade of automobiles. Queen Phyllis Sweder and her court pre¬ sided at special ceremonies before the kickoff. The undertaking proved to be such a success that it will become an annual feature. The L-Men operate a parking concession at the home football games as a means of raising revenue. Together with the profit accruing from the weekly dances, this money makes possible the awarding of two scholarships annually to athletes who achieve high scholastic records. Other projects by the organization include a training table for the foot¬ ball team prior to the Lowell game, an annual award dinner at which sweaters and scrolls are awarded to all lettermen, and a chartered bus trip to a Red Sox baseball game for the ath¬ letes, the cheerleaders, the majorettes and the band. 124 1959-1960 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Clockwise from top: Captain Virginia Durgin, Carol Medelinskas, Marilyn Moore, Patricia Petrillo, Rachel Rivela, Sandra Gruber, Janet Hershfield, Joyce Coco, Judith Maxfield, Donna Curry, Susan Mueller, Joyce Huson. Until the mid-forties, cheerleading was a masculine prerogative at Lawrence High School. At that time, the fair sex succeeded in achieving partial representation on the squad. The innovation proved to be so popular that by 1950, there were no longer any male cheerleaders remaining. Because there are no forms of athletics for girls, even on an intramural basis, cheer¬ leading is one of the few avenues open to feminine self-expression outside of the school- sponsored clubs which concern themselves with various branches of learning. Competition for places on the squad is extremely keen. Upwards to three hundred girls may register for tryouts. Only seniors and juniors with creditable scholarship records and no discipline de¬ merits are eligible for the dozen positions on the varsity. Freshmen and sophomores can strive for the six posts on the junior varsity group. Tests for next season ' s varsity are given in May. The preliminary elimination cuts the candidates down to forty. Outside judges pass on the merits of the finalists. The contestants are judged in groups of four. In addition to running through several intricate formations, the girls must execute two cheers, namely The Team Cheer” and Spell Out the High School”. The dozen winning performers then enter on intensive training under the tutelage of their coach, Miss Irene M. Carraher of the Commercial Department. Until the opening football game, two-hour practice sessions are on the agenda four days a week. Later the schedule is reduced to three meetings a week. After Thanksgiving, the squad trains semi¬ weekly for the basketball games. 125 SENIOR CLASS CHEERLEADERS FORM PYRAMID Top: Virginia Durgin; Center: Rachel Rivela, Sandra Gruber; Bottom: Judith Maxfield, Joyce Huson, Susan Mueller. Although they experienced mediocre suc¬ cess, the boys played interesting football, and were never outclassed. In fact, had Dame Fortune smiled in their direc¬ tion, Lawrence’s football heroes might have won every game except the encounter with once-beaten Haverhill. Fate frowned on the Blue White on March 15, 1959, when Coach Edward T. Buckley suddenly resigned on the eve of spring practice to accept a more lucrative position in Chicago. His successor, Gerald Callagy had to teach funda¬ mentals to a comparatively green squad in September. Just before the first game, all-scholastic end John Kelleher, who had scored 72 points a year ago, suffered a leg injury which sidelined him for the entire schedule. Of course, casualties must be expected in rugged pigskin competition. Captain Rick Desmarais was a tower of strength, espe¬ cially on defense, in a losing cause. A bright ray of hope for the future is the development of sophomore Joe Celia into an outstanding forward passer. Bob Riendeau, who had trans¬ ferred to the signal caller’s post from his end position in the opening clash against Chelsea, played a stellar role in the backfield until he suffered a concussion at Manchester which benched him during the climactic battles against Haverhill and Lowell. 1959 can be classified as a building year for the Lan¬ cers. In the Essex County League, the Lan¬ cers finished in the second division with six triumphs and ten defeats. Outside the circuit, the Blue White dropped a close contest at Man¬ chester, N.H. and whipped neighboring Methuen twice at the tail-end of the schedule. In all probability, varsity basketball will never be played again on the bandbox court in the high school building. The gymnasium of the new Osgood Street grammar school, seating a thousand spec¬ tators, should be completed before another winter rolls around. Prac¬ ticing on an under-sized playing area places a team at considerable disadvantage. Lawrence only won twice as the visiting squad out of ten tries in the season just ended. The best performance by the Lancers took place at Gloucester, when they held the unbeaten Fishermen to a four-point spread, 54-50. Lawrence had a tremendous one-two punch in Orlando and Riendeau, both of whom averaged close to twenty points a game. On the other hand, their teammates were never consistent on the attack. The Blue White excelled in foul shooting, however, by outscoring their com¬ bined opposition at the charity line, 312 to 220. However, the I960 indoor track team gave the best performance by Lancers in that sport during the last decade. In fact, with a little luck the record could have been four and four, for star 300 yard dash- man Captain Bob Weber did not participate against Salem or Lowell, when both meets were lost by the identical score of 41-36. Then the boys had the misfortune of dropping three out of their last four, falling to fourth place in the final standing. Gloucester and Lynn English were co-champions, each winning 12 and losing 4. Outside of the league, Lawrence defeated both Lowell and Manchester Central twice. An oddity of the season was the fact that the Lancers in consecutive outings participated in a pair of no-hit, no-run games. They fell victims of Gloucester’s Bob McLeod, May 4, 10-0. Two days later, Bob Grudenski hurled a no-hitter against Saugus, 4-0. On the very next afternoon, Kenny Hulme limi¬ ted Salem to a single bingle. The best effort of the Lawrence boys was their 14 inning triumph over Lynn English at Lynn in a 2-1 thriller. The Lancers were outhit 14 to 5 on that occasion. Return games with Beverly and Lynn Classical, which had been postponed by inclement weather late in May, were canceled, because they would have had no bearing on the league championship. Development of the body is just as important as the training of the mind. While competitive athletics demand outstanding prowess from a comparative few, physical education extends its facilities to all students. Climbing the Ropes On the Stall Bars 149 CONCLUSION The time has come to ring down the curtain on the academic year, 1959-1960. In the minds of the graduating class, three things will be long remembered. (1) Headmaster Augustine J. Lawlor retired after a noteworthy career of a half-century in the field of secondary education. (2) Because of a tragic school fire in Chicago, the Department of Public Safety of Massachusetts demanded the installation of fire screens throughout Lawrence High School. The students cannot soon forget the utter confusion caused by this precautionary measure when the building reopened last September. (3) Unwilling to rest on the accomplishments of the 1959 yearbook committee, the Class of I960 voted to change the traditional size of the classbook page from 7-3 4” x 10 - 1 2 ” to 9” x 12” for better pictorial coverage. Saturday’s Child” was chosen as the theme of the I960 yearbook to symbolize the age in which today’s teenager is grow¬ ing up. Life is a struggle for survival. There is no room for com¬ placency. Youth must put his best foot forward and exert himself to the limit of his capabilities. In not being satisfied with dupli¬ cating the 1959 classbook, the I960 yearbook committee showed it realized the necessity of moving forward to new heights. Those who stand still in the second half of the twentieth century will soon see the world pass them by. What is superior today will be outdated tomorrow. Progress must be our greatest product. Smoke Screen Shuts Off Stairway ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Class of I960 wishes to thank Headmaster Augustine J. Lawlor and the entire faculty for their cooperation during the taking of pictures throughout the school. Loring Studios, the official photographers, gave individual students special consideration in arranging for the portraits for the senior section. Cameraman Robert Talbot took con¬ siderable pains in his work of snapping photos of school life in its many forms. Robert C. Moore, sales representative of the publisher T. O’Toole and Sons, offered technical advice most generously. The patronage of the advertisers helped to bring the cost of the book down measurably. Last, but not least, was the effort of Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan, who labored diligently for countless hours in order to bring the project to a successful climax. 150 INDEX Acknowledgments Activities, Extra-Curricular . Administration .
