See The Boys Through!” Such were the immortal words of Captain Francis M. Leahy of Lawrence, the leader of Company F of the 101st Infantry, as he lay dying in La Fere Woods, out¬ side Epieds, France on July 21, 1918. The inspiring utterance of this World War I hero serves as the basis of the theme for the 1959 Lawrence High School Senior Classbook. Today, forty years later, the command is still forward for the youth of America. It is the duty of the high school to see the boys and the girls through the difficulties of the teenage period, so that they may realize their heritage in the era that lies ahead. This classbook tells how Lawrence High School aims to prepare its students to go forward. Located 25 miles north of Boston, and 25 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, Lawrence is a city of 75,000 people. Its public high school has an enrolment of 2300, and employs 85 teachers. A four-year course is offered in the college preparatory, nursing, commercial, general, home economics and manual arts divisions. About one-fourth of the graduates continue their education to schools of higher classification. 7 Headmaster Augustine J. Sault organized the Lawrence High School Band in 1925. Over the years, this musical unit has maintained a high standard of excellence. About 80 students devote an evening a week to practice under the direction of Bandmaster Oswald W. Vogel. Since no time can be spent on the band during the school day, the young musicians are called upon to make a sacrifice to attain mastery of their instruments. Extra hours are needed during the autumn for marching drills and the execution of the intricate maneuvers carried out between the halves at the football games. Appearances at several patriotic and civic affairs are made with the approval of the school board. Competition with other leading bands takes place at musical festivals and field days conducted throughout New England. The Lawrence aggregation has scored many outstanding successes at these functions. Membership in the unit can be attained only by competent musicians who are able to meet the stiff tests of the tryout auditions. The Band Parents ' Association promotes the annual Talent Night and commands the concessions at home basketball games in order to support four band scholar¬ ships at graduation. They also conduct an annual dinner for the seniors who are about to retire from the unit, and award each one with an appropriately inscribed blazer or jacket. Through the efforts of the Band Parents, 120 bandsmen, majorettes, and cheerleaders accom¬ panied the Lancer football team to the Orange Bowl intersectional game against Miami Edison High in Dec¬ ember, 1957. More than $10,000 was raised by popular subscription to the Association ' s appeal for financial support. Both the composition and printing of this monthly newspaper are strictly the work of the pupils themselves. Unlike most scholastic pub¬ lications, the Lawrencian carries no advertising. Each issue is circulated to the whole student body without any charge other than the proceeds of a single voluntary collection, which is taken up after mid-years. Because there is no course in journalism in the curriculum, membership on the staff is deter¬ mined by an individual ' s ability and devotion to the paper. About thirty students, chosen from all four classes, comprise the activating force behind the publication. Andrew Moynihan, head of the English Department, serves as faculty advisor for the group. Vogel. A trio of girl singers who call them¬ selves The Three Hearts provide vocal accompa¬ niment. It is the purpose of the group t o play at the weekly L Men ' s Record Hops, which are held in the Gym almost every Friday night from October to April. The Musical Lancers are not in competi¬ bisz, Robert Sacchetti, Philip Swan, Richard Gerstein, Ellen Stahle (at piano). Front row: Patricia Lees, Beverleyann Fox, Ellen Walsh, Joseph Buckley (leader). tion with regular union musicians. Therefore, they play for one hour at dances where a disc jockey has been hired to furnish music for dancing. Mr. Vogel believes that a limit of an hour should be set for a high school student band, because of the youth of the personnel. The Musical Lancers are enthusiastic about their musical venture. The players are gaining in¬ valuable experience through their frequent public appearances. 117 Two Hearts in Three-Quarter Time. Ellen Walsh Bev Fox Render a Popular Hit. Seated: Helen Kolsky, Margaret Hennessey. 119 COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club takes field trips during school hours to the Internal Revenue Service, banks, business houses and credit bureaus to learn by observa¬ tion some complex operations of the modern business world. IBM office ma¬ chines are analysed on films which are made available for club meetings. Per¬ sonnel managers and tax experts deliver talks before the group frequently. Mem¬ bership is restricted to seniors and juniors who are studying advanced subjects in the business course. Only one formal after-school session is held monthly, be¬ cause almost every member holds a part- time job. OFFICERS Standing: Judith La Francis (secretary), Elizabeth Murphy (treasurer), Diane Hildebrandt (vice president). Seated: Janet Cuomo (president). SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club centers its interest on the customs and social life of the Spanish speaking nations. Magazines and newspapers written in that tongue are circulated at the meetings. The greatest public display by the club takes place at the school ' s annual Inter-Club Christ¬ mas Party. In the past, bull fights and native dances such as the Mexican Hat Dance have won wide acclaim. Member¬ ship is open to any student who has ever studied Spanish. OFFICERS Joan Papa (librarian), Rose Marie Rivela (vice president), Joseph Paro- lisi (president), Mary Polizzotti (secretary), Barbara Smith (treasurer). 120 LATIN CLUB Societas Latinum extends member¬ ship to all students who have progressed beyond two years in the language. The customs of ancient Rome and the broad influence of Latin civilization on the modern world are the chief points of in¬ terest at club meetings. A highlight of the school year is the production of a Latin play, which is performed by the club members before an audience of classes that are currently studying Caesar ' s Commentaries. OFFICERS Nancy Riese (junior program chairman), Philip Swan (vice president), Kathleen Kiernan (president). Mary Alice O ' Dowd (senior program chairman). BOYS ' DEBATING SOCIETY The Boys ' Debating Society is the oldest club in the Lawrence High School, having a continuous existence of more than 75 years. Perhaps its best known past member is the great American poet, Robert Frost, Class of 1892. Meetings are held weekly at 7 P.M. in Room 26. In addition to weekly debates, a mock trial and an oratorical contest are featured every year. On a lighter vein, the boys put on one of the feature acts at the annual Inter-Club Christmas Party. The Night Before Christmas in 1957, and Three Chipmunks in 1958 were unfor¬ gettable performances. OFFICERS Standing: Anthony Conte (vice president), James Champy (president), Eugene Kelley (sergeant-at-arms). Seated. Martin Egan (treasurer), Ed¬ win Zimny (secretary). 121 BIOLOGY CLUB Biology club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, when science films are shown and biological projects not handled in the regular course of study are discussed. Field trips to the Museum of Natural History and college science departments are sched¬ uled periodically. Most of the members enter exhibits in the annual Science Fair conducted in the school in March. Interest has grown in the club ' s activities since the advent of Sputnik in 1957. OFFICERS Beverleyann Fox (secretary), Anthony Conte (treasurer), Maureen Cavarra (president), Carol Coco (junior program chairman), Joyce Huson (vice presi¬ dent), Ankine Avakian (senior program chairman). FRENCH CLUB Le Circle Frangais conducts one meeting a month almost entirely in French. At that time, French movies are shown, songs, games and skits are enjoyed. A library of French periodi¬ cals and books are bought with pro¬ ceeds from club dues. The big project of the year is the club ' s part in the Christmas Party. Traditional French carols are sung, and a display of modern French interest is created. Of¬ ficers of Le Circle Frangais are third- year students, but membership is open to second-year students of the lan¬ guage. OFFICERS Jane Evans (program chairman), Ann Regan (treasurer), James Champy (librarian), Cecile Suida (secretary), Margaret Hennessey (vice president), Helen Kolsky (president). 122 ITALIAN CLUB Bi-weekly meetings of II Circolo Italiano are held in Room 21 by students of at least two years ' study of the lan¬ guage. Italian customs and culture are featured in the regular proceedings of the group. An extensive record library contains both operatic and folk song selections. The organization circulates periodicals and books written in Italian. OFFICERS Standing: William Fragala (program committee), Charles Polizzotti (program committee), Patricia Lees (secretary), Richard De Rosa (treasurer). Seated: Linda Pepe (president), Lucille Bova (vice president). OFFICERS Sandra Kmiec (treasurer), Justine Kennedy (secretary), Judith Savinelli (vice president), Donald Ouellette (president). ART CLUB Art Club membership is restricted to students in the advanced classes. Meetings are held in Room 405 the first Wednesday of the month. The organization has two important dates on its schedule — the Christmas Party and the Junior-Senior Prom. Practically all the members are drafted by dif¬ ferent school clubs for assistance on individual displays. Besides helping the uninitiated, the club handles a setting of its own, which excels all others. All the scenery for the Prom is created by the Art Club as a good will gesture to the rest of the school. 123 SPEAKERS ' CLUB Membership in the Speakers ' Club is limited to seniors. Meetings which feature variety entertainment take place in the hall on the first Wednesday of each month. For every holiday, the mem¬ bers make a tape recording which is played over the school sound system. The all-girls choir and the Nativity tableau are regular contributions to the Christmas Party. Most of the members try out for the Talent Night show. In the spring the Fashion Show is a regular feature. OFFICERS Standing: Dorothy Kibildis (vice president), John Donovan (president). Seated: Frank Ragonese (secretary-treasurer). GIRLS ' DEBATING SOCIETY The Girls ' Debating Society meets weekly on Monday nights in the hall. Every girl in the school can join, and the membership is 150. The main objectives are the development of poise, diction, and cleverness in speech. A best speaker is chosen at every meeting, and a monetary prize is awarded at the close of the year to the person deemed to be the best speaker of the year . OFFICERS Standing: Virginia McCarthy (vice president), Marie Consoli (treas¬ urer), Carol Drouin (secretary). Seated: Joan Lisauskas (program com¬ mittee), Ellen Townsend (president). 124 GERMAN CLUB Der Deutsche Verein features films which increase knowledge of German in¬ dustry, culture and history. At the Christ¬ mas-Party, the club dressed a tree with tasty and attractive cookies. Ellen Stahle led the group in traditional German Christmas carols as part of the municipal celebration on Lawrence Common. A panel show, featuring Adam Diener, who recently came to Lawrence High from Germany, was very interesting and in¬ formative. Meetings are held monthly in the hall. OFFICERS Alan Erler (sergeant at arms), Benita Shaltz (treasurer), David Schmottlach (president), Ellen Stahle (vice president), Edwin Zimmy (secretary). MATHEMATICS CLUB The Math Club, limited to juniors and seniors, meets in Room 5 on the third Wednesday of the month. A n umber of intriguing problems not regularly taken up in class are featured at these gatherings. An annual project is participation in the mathematics con¬ test sponsored by the University of Massachusetts. OFFICERS Bernard Rosman (secretary), Mary Kiernan (director), Thomas Kelly (treasurer), Sandra Morrison (director), Martin Egan (president), Rich¬ ard Laycock (vice president). 125 126 Mr. Harrington Explains Model of a Flower to Roy Scott Patricia Lees. THE SCIENCE FAIR The furor raised by the Russian Sputnik has led to an increased interest in science in American secondary schools and colleges. An off-shoot of this newly awakened enthusiasm was the first annual Science Fair at Lawrence High in March, 1958. Twenty-five students entered projects on which they had spent much time and effort. First prize went to Ronald Volungus for Hydroponics . Mary Lou Crowley was second with a Study of Bacteria , and Mary McDonald placed third with Lawrence Water Works . Honorable mention went to Janice Oskar ' s Dissection of a Frog , Christa Klute ' s Artificial Kidney , and Eugene Kelley ' s Osmosis . These girls give up hundreds of study periods to handle the heavy correspondence of the Lawrence High School Alumni Association. Thousands of letters are sent out to graduates of the school to solicit renewals of membership in the organization. Funds raised in this manner are used as the basis of five scholarships of one hundred dollars each for deserving graduates at Alumni Night in June. Since the revival of the Alumni Association in 1949, Alumni Night has become one of the focal points on the school calendar. Hundreds of old grads return on this special occasion to relive their high school experiences for a few hours. Especial celebrations are held by all classes that are observing reunions such as the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, etc. The center of the stage is held by the members of the 25th and 50th an¬ niversary classes. Individual classrooms are set aside as meeting places for the members of every past graduating class since 1900, for an informal get-together of each group prior to the planned program. Men and women come back to Lawrence from far parts of the United States to join in Alumni Night festivities. 132 ALUMNI NIGHT HOSTESSES 1958 ALUMNI NIGHT AWARD WINNERS Standing: Richard Greene, Edward Porst, Bernard Kiernan, Anne Tryon, Archie Babaian, Frank Incropera. Lawrence High School has kept this old adage in mind for more than three quarters of a century. A uniformed football team was organized in 1881. Down through the years, the medium of athletics has served as a teacher of leadership, discipline, and cooperation. At present, football is in the ascendancy. The Blue White has enjoyed unbeaten and untied seasons in 1957 and 1958, winning the Class A championship on both occasions. Attaining the heights for a second time in the latter year was remarkable, because the squad had lost all but two regulars from the previous campaign by graduation. Basketball and baseball competition is provid¬ ed chiefly through the Essex County League. In the history of that circui t, Lawrence has won its share of pennants. However, the past few seasons may be described as building years , in which under¬ classmen outnumbered veterans on the varsity. Prospects are looking up in both sports. Track has been in the doldrums during the past decade. Inadequate indoor training facilities have been the major handicap. Excellent individ¬ ual performers have emerged, but the team has not had sufficient balance of much needed second and third place qualifiers in the different events. New interest in the sport has been awakened by the formation of a league among eight high schools in the area in 1959. Despite the efforts of the authorities to develop girls ' basketball, activity has been limited by the unavailability of competent coaching. During the past winter, nobody would take the position, so the fair sex had no opportunity to participate in athletic competition with outside schools. 136 Captains of 1958-1959 Varsity Teams Mike Di Gaetano (football); Ralph Wolfendale (basketball); Roy Scott (track); Frank Ragonese (baseball) Submaster Arthur G. The highlight of the season was the one¬ sided victory, 14-4, over the last-named nine for the city championship. Star pitcher Joe Carter compiled an im¬ pressive strikeout record. As a result of his great mound skill, he was signed to try out with a Kansas City minor league affiliate in 1959. The former is composed of the graduate athletic lettermen of the school. Since 1949, this energetic group has created a $10,000 trust fund as an endowment for scholarships for Lancer athletes, whereby they may receive help toward a higher education. The L Men have given freely of their time and energy for the welfare of the students. Weekly record hops are conducted at the gym from October to May. They also operate a parking concession at the home football games to raise funds. As Thanks¬ giving approaches, they underwrite a training table for the football players, prior to the Lowell game. Each spring, the L Men run a fleet of buses to a Boston Red Sox game with all the athletes, cheer¬ leaders, majorettes and band members as their guests. They give a banquet annually to all the lettermen near the close of the school year, where the boys and girls receive plaques and sweaters. Scholarships are awarded to athletes on Alumni Night. The Alumni Association sponsors the annual Alumni Night at which $2,000 worth of scholarships are awarded to members of the graduating class. Nominal dues of a dollar a year are required for membership. However, many alumni donate extra money to build up the permanent scholarship fund. Anniversary classes such as the 50th, 25th, etc. make special contributions for scholarships given in their honor. Rally Record Hop Poster L’ENVOI The Command Is Foward still exhorts the members of the Class of 1959, as they stand on the threshold of the Lawrence High School on the eve of gradua¬ tion. An immediate objective has been attained, but the battle of life still stands in the balance. Commencement is both an end and a beginning. It is the close of a four-year period during which there was a guiding hand of supervision to see the boys through . Before each member of the class, a new life is now dawning. Boundless vistas of hope lie ahead. Nothing can remain static in the age of inter¬ planetary rockets. The Command Is Forward. A FINAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT The 1959 BLUE WHITE staff takes pardonable pride for the production of the largest yearbook in the history of the Lawrence High School — 40 pages longer than any of its predecessors. However, thanks are due to many people for lending the students a helping hand. Headmaster Augustine J. Lawlor and the entire faculty were very cooperative in making arrangements for the taking of pictures throughout the school. The office manager of Loring Studio in the Central Building extended the class many courtesies. Cameramen Robert Talbot and Alfred Macaulay took considerable pains with their work. Robert C. Moore of T. O ' Toole Sons, Inc. gave technical advice freely concerning the format of the book. The staff wishes to thank the four hundred advertisers, whose financial support of the project has been most encouraging. Especial mention is made of the loan of a photograph of Captain Francis M. Leahy by Miss Mary A. Twomey, principal of the Leahy School; the loan of an aerial view of the center of Lawrence by the Lawrence Y.M.C.A.; the use of four photographs taken by the Eagle-Tribune Publishing Co. — Weeping Cheerleaders , Eagle-Tribune Football Trophy Pres¬ entation and two pictures of Award Winners at the 1958 Class Night. The yearbook staff is deeply indebted to Faculty Adviser Andrew J. Moynihan for forcing them to plow the long furrow . Because of his exacting demands, the book was planned out with care to serve as a permanent record of how The Command Is Forward was carried out by the Class of 1959. 177 INDEX A Acknowledgments .
