Built in T906 in the World 7,000 People A little more than one hundred years ago, textile promoters erected the Great Stone Dam across a rocky ledge in the Merrimack River to provide abundant waterpower for the manufacture of cloth in Lawrence, Massachusetts. For more than a mile, factories formed a solid wall on both sides of the stream. The largest worsted plant in the world was located here. Six stories high and 1,800 feet long, it was a symbol of how closely the city was wedded economically to the prosperity of a single industry. Evil befell New England textiles in the second quarter of the twentieth century. Communities below the Mason-Dixon Line offered tax free land as an incentive to mill owners to transfer their opera- tions to an area where an unlimited supply of cheap unorganized labor existed. When modern chemistry discovered rayon, nylon, and orlon fibres, the existing colossal factories of the North were placed at a further competitive disadvantage. The great mills of Lawrence had suddenly become obsolete. They closed down permanently one after another. Sensational writers labeled the community a distress area and even predicted that the city would soon become a ghost town. Old Part of Washington Mills Razed.
