For Reference (2[ai± (Ddz — (D lci O God, we thank Thee on our commencement We’re from a land where we are all free To speak and worship however we may; From fear and from want we trust in Thee. We’ve come a short way, up the ladder of life, And as we go forth, each seeking his path, May God grant us strength to overcome strife, And give us the power to conquer the wrath, That we of this age may see our great world United in peace, with one flag unfurled. This is our task — may God’s will be done. JAMES F. HENNESSEY Superintendent of Schools AUGUSTINE J. FOOTBALL Hr ik ZJoaH to the Qirl$ Here’s to the girls of ’53, with whom we ventured into high school four, seemingly short, years ago. Then we did not know whether the life that lay ahead of us would be filled with the warm smiles of bene¬ volent fortune, or made difficult by capricious tricks of fate. Time, however, brought a com bination of both, because there were blissful happenings as well as sobering ones. Whenever we were jovial, enthus¬ ed, or in a high state of exuberance, those particular occasions seemed bigger, better, and more wonderful than we could have otherwise imagined in our most fanciful dreams, because the girls were with us. Just their presence gave everything a brighter hue, making our surroundings resplendent with-their grace and charm. Remember those times when everything went against us? We were down and out, and had seemingly reached the nadir of despair. In such instances, we really learned to appreciate the girls. Their proximity gave us comfort and also the strength to go on. Their sympathetic words, their understanding, and their comforting ways were like a haven in a tempest. Now let us acknowledge our heart¬ felt gratitude to the girls by saying thank you. Thanks for your loyalty; thanks for your understanding; thanks for your support; thanks for all you have done; thanks for what you have meant to us! JAMES S. MARCHESE Boys of Class of 1953 in the Armed Forces WYLDER PRESTON BARROWS, JR. JOSEPH B. HOLLIDAY ROBERT LINUS OUELLET RICHARD A. SULLIVAN ik ik ik 73oaH to the JkoyA Here is a toast to the ’53 boys, The cause of our miseries, source of our joys. After four years of acquaintance with you, Warm friendships are still refreshingly new. In our class we have boys of every brand; Knowing them so well has been really grand. There is the big brain with the high IQ, And the average plugger, like me and you. In the field of play, our boys stand out true; No opponent can best the White and Blue. You’re made of the stuff that comes out on top; Once you start fighting, you never cry stop. Musicians, debators, lords over all, Whatever the need, you’re there at the call. With each small service, you help pay the debt Owed to our school, and we’ll never forget. Leaves bid good-bye to the trees in the fall; So we say farewell to you, one and all. Your memories, so dear, are with us to stay, Although years will pass and footsteps may stray. Each boy in the class bears a shining light; May his deeds in the future glitter bright, ‘Though the voice of fate lead him far and wide, Away from the home where we now reside. But banish all gloom, this bright pleasant day; Wish the boys well as they start on their way; Hope for happiness on life’s busy street. God speed the time when we shall again meet! Each mentor has been a leader and friend; We offer this toast as our four years end. You have led us through a course of schooling; We have done some work, but too much fooling: In language, science, math, and history, Your proven skill helped solve the mystery. In civics you drilled us to do good deeds; Your training will aid us in sowing seeds The world will reap in the great tomorrow, Rich fruit of the truths which now we borrow. So patient and kind, may you long remain To counsel and teach the teen-age brain. Though we can’t return all the credit due, May the good Lord bless every one of you! Basketball The basketball team led by a fine and capable captain, George (Boiza) Giles, invaded the courts with a better team than its indiffer¬ ent won and lost record would seem to indicate. Losing a few early season games by four and five point spreads provided no discourage¬ ment for the wearers of the blue and white as they fought back with determination to sweep a series from our up-river rival, Lowell, and spoil a Gloucester bid for Essex County League laurels. The lack of height for rebounding proved the biggest flaw in the Ed Webb coached quintet. Giles’ driving and passing, Atkinson’s shooting, and the fine all-around play of Ramos, Cockroft, and O’Neil outdistanced many a good team. During the season four players each racked up well over a century of points with Ken Atkinson tops with 286, Giles (172), John Sasner (123), and Tony Ramos (122), all being consistent scorers. The future outlook for the Lawrence High cagers is very bright as Captain- elect Cockroft, Mugavero, Ramos, Peter, Beattie, Lopiano, and Macione, aided by the J. V.’s Maroun, McCarthy, Boucher, and a terrific ball¬ player in Lydick will bring many victories to the school. The very successful J. V. season was climaxed by a thrilling victory over Cen¬ tral Catholic, although forced into two overtimes and one “sudden death” period. Edward Webb served his last season as mentor of the blue and white basketball team. His fine coaching and drilling on fundamentals and team play will positively aid in the future ballplaying of many Lawrence High athletes. Good Luck to Captain-elect Cockroft and the L.H.S. cagers of the future. JOHN SASNER w m: Wllmm First row (left to right) : Tom Bradley (Mgr.), Bob Lefebre, Nat Muggavero, Larry LaBonte, Bill Rossi, Franny Frank (( ' apt.), Dick Kaupin, Bob Soumma, Joe Lahood, Tony Ramos, Don Delaney (Mgr.). Top row: George Maroun, Ken Taylor, Jim Quinn, Eddie Caston, Wally Clifton, Vic Nastasia, Charlie Lopiano, Marty Quinlan, Ray Hout, Andy Forte, Norm Salem, Joe Drummond. Football It was a young and inexperienced squad that reported to Coach Jordan at the beginning of the season, the youngest team ever to represent Lawrence High School in football. Many of the boys were tense an nervous as the team trekked to Manning Bowl to face the strong Lynn Classical eleven. Sports writers and fans had picked an easy victory for Lynn that night, but with the able assistance of LaBonte who blocked a kick and Kennedy who payed an outstanding game on defense we came out the victor by the margin of 7-0, with Frank crashing over in the last three seconds of play for the tally. In this game we lost the services of Vic Nastasia, who, with a broken hand, refused to be taken out until the conclusion of the game. He was out for more than half of the season. Still sparked by this upset, the team won over Keith Academy by the score of 13-6, Joe Lahood and Charlie Tarness turning in out¬ standing performances, aiding greatly to the victory of the team. In the mud-soaked field of Mon chester Central, we were plagued with numerous injuries. Lost to the team were George Maroun, “Hucko” Cameron, Joe Drummond, and Capt. Frank. The team came back with an inspiring victory over Nashua at Memorial Stadium. “Pete” Foster, Dick Kaupin, and Johnny Sasner gave stellar exhibitions on the gridiron, as the team won 7-0. During the remainder of the season, Lawrence failed to register a win, although giving a fine account of itself both on and off the (Continued on following page) gridiron. Although we did not go as well as we should, the morale of the team was especially high. At no time during the long practice sessions were there any more than three or four absent. This showed the true spirit and fight which every payer possessed, from the lowest substitute to the most hardened veteran on the team. Late in the season, we were informed that this was Mr. Jordan’s final year as football coach. This came to us as bad news, for we had learned to trust him, not just as a coach or a teacher, but as a friend whom we could respect and admire. To his players our coach left a legacy of honor, decency, consideration, affection, and above all, a man to man sense of fair play and sportsmanship which will live in the hearts of his players forever. Good luck, Coach Jordan! We should also like to wish newly-appointed Coach Doherty and Capt.-elect Ramos the best of luck from the Class of “53” in their coming season. “FRANNY” FRANK ☆ ☆ ik T rack The Lawrence High School indoor track team was again handi¬ capped in its development by lack of proper training facilities. Sprinters and distance men alike had to practice in the corridor on the bottom floor of the James D. Horne annex. There was no oppor¬ tunity to develop pacemaking in this far from ideal set-up. The field-event men had to shift as well as they could in the limited area of the boys’ gym. With few men lost by graduation a year ago, the squad was well stocked with veteran material. However, talent was not equitably distributed. There was an unfortunate lack of depth in the distance runs, and the team never did come up with an adequate anchor-man for the relay. In our first meet with Lynn English, the score was tied, going into the last event, the relay. Our weakness, in part attributable to lack of proper training facilities for the development of a balanced quartette, cost us victory. Not discouraged by this narrow defeat, our boys performed brilliantly the following week to trounce Phillips Andover Junior Varsity. Only once in the season that followed were we really outclassed. That occurred when we opposed the undefeated veteran squad of Manchester Central High School. The high point on our schedule was our clash with arch-rival Lowell. In the pre-meet forecast, Lawrence was given little chance of making any kind of showing, but as often happens in traditional rivalries, our stalwarts (Continued on following page) produced their best efforts of the year. Instead of sweeping us off the boards, Lowell eked out the triumph by the margin of an eyelash. In addition to dual meets, our boys took part in the Northeastern Meet and the State High School Meet in the Boston Garden. As a reward for many weeks of arduous practice, the squad closed out the indoor season with the overnight trip to the Bowdoin Interscholastics in March. Here we had opportunity to witness college life at close range, thanks to the hospitality of the host school. Senior lettermen who will be lost by graduation include our cap¬ tain, one of Lawrence High’s greatest milers of all time, John Mitchell, George Baker, who tied the record in the high jump, Javan Foster, a top-notch sprinter, Everett Young, a capable hurdler, Leon Galle, a distance runner, John Sasner and Charles Torrisi, two outstanding per¬ formers in the discus, and Clarence La Bonte, a consistent shot putter. As we members of 1953 bid farewell to the squad and wish the best of luck to those returning next year, it is only proper that we express our gratitude to Mr. Perry, Mr. Devlin, and Mr. Lawlor for the interest they have shown in our efforts and the cooperation extended to us while we represented our school in track athletics. The Blue and White began their season with several victories and looked like major leaguers while doing so. The local team, by winning these games, went into the lead in the Essex County League, and hope to maintain this position all season. The team is composed of a number of veterans led by Captain Edward Reming, ace pitcher with three years experience. Other members of the staff include Aime Reming, possessor of an impressive strike-out record, Bill Perry, young fireballer and Fred Lynch, relief hurler. The catching post is ably handled by Bob Lefebvre, one of the leading hitters of last year’s team. Royce McLennan has also seen ser¬ vice behind the bat. The starting infield is composed of Joe Cockroft at first, Jack McCarthy at second, Greg Kriorian, last year’s Essex County League all-star, shortstop, and Paul Autiello, clean-up hitter, at third. Danny O’Connell in left, Eddie Couto in center and John Ken¬ nedy in right comprise the regular outfield. Other boys who have shown to good advantage include Jack Pedrick, Ray Huot, George Maroun, and Tony Ramos. Seniors performing in the flannels of the “Lancers” for the last year are Capt. Edward Reming, Paul Autiello, Edwin Couto, Gregory Krikorian, John Kennedy, Daniel O’Connell, Royce McLennan and Frederick Lynch. The schedule this year consisted of the fourteen regular league games and two contests each with Lowell and Central Catholic. Coach James F. Jordan and William Higgins have done outstand¬ ing work with this year’s team and I wish to thank them on behalf of the boys for the great services they have performed for us. We hope that Lawrence will go on to take the league championship and make their last year at the helm a pleasant one. JOHN W. KENNEDY, JR. Class Day Cla Jrhtory, When the Class of 1953 assembled, 584 strong, in the autumn of 1949, it was a moment of note in the history of our school. The long period of Babylonion captivity was over for the freshman classes at L. H. S. For more than twenty years before our time, first year students had either to attend an afternoon school session in the high school building, or as has been the case since 1941, assemble as a separate unit in what was called “The Oliver High School”. The edu¬ cational and social values of having the whole school under the same roof at the same time needs no further comment. The class officers for our freshman year were Robert Flanagan, president; Litha Skelly, vice-president; and Annie Young, secretary-treasurer. Under their capable leadership, the Freshman Frolics went off in high style. Just as our summer vacation began in 1950, an event of earth- shaking proportions took place in far distant Korea. While we did not perhaps realize its consequence at the moment, there can be no doubt in our minds now as to how fate turned the whole course of our lives in that tragic hour. As sophomores, we entered more actively into school affairs. Those of our group who had the proper requisites soon found their names in the club rosters and the varsity sports line-ups. Our sophomore officers were Philip Nardone, president; Richard Testa, vice-president; and Annie Young, secretary-treasurer. Early in our junior year, the class was saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of one of our members, Frances Forzese. She will long be remembered by her great legion of friends as a girl of pleas¬ ing personality and Talented accomplishments. Historically, our junior year saw the establishment of the first golf team to represent Law¬ rence High School. The long drawn out bus strike of the Eastern Mass, employees forced us to find other means of transportation for a period of four months. Class officers were Francis Frank, president; Richard Testa, vice-president; and Javan Foster, secretary-treasurer. Compulsory driver-education became part of our schedule. Class rings were ordered. We began to take a more adult attitude toward our surroundings. A high percentage of the class found part-time after school employment. The presidential campaign of 1952 came literally to the door of the school in October of our senior year. Although no president of the United States had honored Lawrence with a visit since Theo¬ dore Roosevelt paid us a call back in 1903, in a space of ten days both General Eisenhower and President Truman addressed the citi¬ zens, who numbered many thousands, on Lawrence Common. Needless to say, all classes were dismissed to view history in the making. Class officers for the senior year were Kenneth Atkinson, president; Louise Darveau, vice-president; and Javan Foster, secretary-treasurer. The motto of the class was selected by a vote of the full membership: “He conquers who conquers himself”. It is the privilege of our senior class to graduate during the week when the City of Lawrence is officially celebrating its centennial. Soon the doors will close on the Class of 1953 as undergraduates for the last time. We have studied, worked, and played under the guidance of our teachers for four years which will constitute a memorable period of our lives. May we as individuals on our separate ways in the years to come always be worthy of our traditions of the Law¬ rence High School! CAROL S. FOX ClaAA It ill and VeAtament We, the class of 1953 of Lawrence High School, City of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, in the State of Massachusetts, of the United States of America, being of sound mind and sound physical cap¬ acity and knowing that as all human beings our lives will eventu¬ ally be terminated either naturally, forcibly or voluntarily, do of our own free will hereby draw up, execute and frame this, our Last Will and Testament, by which we leave, grant, bestow, convey and other¬ wise bequeath to the undergraduates and the members of the fac¬ ulty, our best wishes in the hopes that they derive therefrom the pleasures and benefits that we, in drawing up this instrument, in¬ tended.
