Our vener ra e school has sent out thousands of graduates®ice its first small graduating class of 7 under We guidance of one teacher-principal to today ' s®ra during class of 428 under the guidance of a |f a cutty of 94. The years intervening hqve witnessed many changes from that small byilding which stood on the site of the present Oliver Grammar School. Our school has alwfys kept rapid pace with the growth of our city so that its graduates have been able to take-advantage of the opportunities in its industrial, business and professional life, and today we have the present large modern building wijkits well-equipped different departments. A W How many thousands pLa encians look upon their high school days as tn|e happiest of their lives — free from tfie confines of the neighborhood grammar und not yet hemmed in b y the limit ofessional or business life, but mingling happily and con¬ tentedly with groups frorr hll sections of the city and from all walks oMjfe-4.the one time in one ' s life for experiencirji} perfect democracy. We of the Lawrence High School have a long and honorable tradition behind ’us, and as we stand here in 1951 let us look forward to a second century of dedication qnd service to our city. Wentory 1978 2 A Century of Honor The best standard by which to judge a school is not the number of great men it has graduated, but rather the mul¬ titude of honest, upright men and women who have entered community life and by their presence have made a better society. If this be so, then Lawrence High School may well be proud of its history. We, the class ol 1951 , salute a century of honor and earnestly hope lor a continuance of your tradition during the years to come. Domenic S. Terranova Class of 1951 mm JAMES F. HENNESSEY Superintendent of Schools 4 AUGUSTINE J. LAWLOR Principal of Lawrence High School Class Ode The clouds are slowly gath’ring in the loiv’rmg skies above, A snore white bird floats shyly, the symbol of peace, a dove. Huge breakers dash against the rocks, hidden ’neath the spray, The chill winds wailing mournfully throughout the ominous clay. The storm in all its fury will burst upon the earth, The falling bombs may signal another world war’s birth. On land and sea, far, far away, our gallant boys will stand, A mighty fortress, firm and true, to save this glorious land. In our outstretched hands, dear classmates, lies the future of the world. And to us, this generation, has the living torch been hurled, Fail or falter xve shall not, however hard it be, Bold and valiant we shall march, onto victory. The storm will cease, the clouds will part, to z welcome the Sun once more, And never again, upon this earth, shall there be the plight of war. Deep in our hearts our vision dwells, guiding our separate ways, And cherishing too, the memories of Lawrence High School Days. Rosemary E. Without his hard work and wise advice this year book could not have been a success. He devoted much of his time to help us through our difficult assignment and though we were faced with many adversities, his optimism encouraged us. The class of 1951 will never forget you, Mr. Casey. We wish to thank you sincerely for helping to make our senior year a very successful one. The squad was hit hard by the loss oi Captain Bob Matthews, a hard blocking and fine pass receiver, who left school, and Fran Delaney, a rugged and aggressive guard, who was declared ineligible by school authorities. Despite these unfortunate incidents, we had a fine nucleus of players from the ’49 season. Carl Fleischman, Ray Lawrence, Joe Carcleilo, Fred Stevenson, Ed Barton, Guido Lippo, Pat Burke, Gus Guciardi, Lawrence Labonte, William Quinlan, Thomas Delaney, Walter Sweeney. Francis Delaney, James Dwyer, Joseph O ' Neil, Robert Fitzgerald, Richard Kaupin, Philip Nardone, Thomas Johnson, John D’Angelo, Albert Lahood. John O’Hearn, Guy Smith and James Jordan, coach. James Hadley, Thomas Greene, John Donahue, William Despres, Francis Franks, John Kennedy, Leon Vitale, John Rogers, George Fraser. Manning Bowl, Lynn Lawrence 0 Peabody 0 Both teams showed offensive power, especially Lawrence who had lost two good men. Lawrence kicked off and Peabody took over on their own 40 yard line, but Lawrence held and took the ball on their own 27 and moved to the Peabody 19 when a 15 yard penalty enabled Peabody to take possession of the pigskin. Peabody then advanced from their 34 to Lawrence’s 5, but with some great line play by “Bill” Quinlan and “Pat” Burke, Peabody was halted. Backs Sweeney and Smith showed great promise. Memorial Stadium, Loivell Lawrence 0 St. Joseph’s 0 This game was played on a Friday night and the team felt that it would hit its stride in this 15 minute scrimmage. St. Joseph’s won the toss and elected to receive. Taking over on their own 35, they were pushed back 5 big yards and 110 forced to kick. Taking over on their own 30, Lawrence marched to the 9 yard line where the ball was lost on the downs. St. Joseph’s took over but was forced to kick and Lawrence received on their own 40 and drove from there to St. Joseph’s 17 yard line where a penalty halted their drive. St. Joseph’s once again took possession of the ball, but time was running short and 5 plays later the game was over. Both the line and backfield played exceptionally well during this game. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 24 Keith 0 Lawrence High outfought a gallant Keith Academy eleven 24 to 0. “Terry” Sweeney scored 3 touchdowns and “Gerry” Grasso 1. Late in the first period, a 70 yard pass thrown by “Johnny” D’Angelo to “Gerry” Grasso accounted for the first Lawrence score of the 1950 football campaign. The greatest of Sweeney’s scores was a 98 yard runback of an intercepted pass. The line play of Louis Giarrussa, “Bill” Quinlan, “Pat” Burke, and “Bob” Fitzgerald was outstanding. Athletic Field, Manchester Lawrence 6 Manchester 13 This game between the “Blue and White” and “Little Green” was played in heavy rain and mud under the arc lights. Lawrence drew first blood on a 45 yard pass from D’Angelo to Fraser late in the second period. On the next kickoff, fleetfootecl “Skippy” Riley of Manchester took the ball on his own 16 and ran 84 yards for the ‘Tittle Green” of Manchester-Central. The extra point was added and at half time Manchester led 7-6. The third period saw little action except for an exchange of punts, until finally, midway in the final period, Manchester again tallied, but failed in the attempt for the extra point. One of the features of the game was the blocking of a kick by “Bill” Quinlan. Guy Smith merits mention for his gains in this game. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 6 Chelsea 6 Lawrence played a poor brand of a ball against a stubborn Chelsea eleven. The two teams battled to a 6-6 tie. Lawrence scored first with “Johnny” D’Angelo carrying the pigskin for the “Blue and White.” The Chelsea touchdown came late in the third period. In this game, the team made a poor showing by fumbling a good many times. Besides this, 6 of our passes were intercepted. Although the game was poorly played, Guy Smith was outstanding for his run¬ ning. “Smithy” averaged 11 yards per run. “Jack” Donahue deserves credit for his good defense. Manning Boivl, Lynn Lawrence 0 Lynn English 13 This was another night game, played at Manning Bowl. Lynn English scored both of their touchdowns on passes. “Bill” Quinlan, “Fred” Stevenson, “Phil” Nardone, “Pat” Burk e, and “Bob” Fitzgerald formed a strong 5 man line which pushed Lynn back for a total loss in rushing of 13 yards. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 28 Nashua 6 George Fraser, playing the first game of his football career as an end, did a fine job by scoring 2 touchdowns. His first score came in the first period on a long pass by “Johnny” D’Angelo into Fraser’s outstretched arms. The other tally came on an end around play netting 28 yards. The other two touchdowns by the “Blue and White” were made by “Terry” Sweeney and Leon Vitale. Sweeney intercepted a pass and carried the ball 98 yards to a touchdown. Leon Vitale did a fine job quarterbacking the team. Again line blocking by Quinlan, Burke, Giarrusso, Stevenson and Fitzgerald earns praise! “Jack” Rogers starred on defense. Ill Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 6 Central Catholic 7 This was the fourth game of the series between the two teams. The first half saw Lawrence have two touchdowns called back because of infractions of the rules. All the scoring came in the second half when “Fred” Jacques, “All Catholic League Back,” scored on a trap play which completely baffled the Lawrence defense. However, the Lawrence team roared back with Guy Smith scoring on a 23 yard jaunt. The try for the extra point failed and this point proved to be the margin of defeat for Lawrence. Early in the fourth period the “Blue and White” started a long drive from their own 40 to the Central 5 yard line only to be stopped a foot short of a first down by fine line play by the Central lads. With time running otit Central was forced to kick and Lawrence tried des¬ perately to score by throwing some passes but this failed. Both elevens played superbly in this thrilling game. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 6 Somerville 14 The game brought the rough and ready “Blue Raiders” of Somerville and the battling “Blue and White” of Lawrence together. Because of the team’s care¬ lessness, Somerville scored in the first period on a 57 yard run. The try for the extra point was good. Lawrence came marching back 80 yards and then scored on an eleven yard run by “old faithful” John D’Angelo. Somerville’s next score came early in the fourth period. Burke and Lahood who broke through the Somerville defense to block two kicks were outstanding in this contest. D’Angelo also merits praise for his fine work. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 39 Haverhill 27 The game was considered by all as “the game of the year.” It was a see-saw battle all the way. Haverhill scored first and then Lawrence came back to score twice but failed to make one of the extra points. The score stood 13-7, Lawrence, with 5 minutes remaining in the first half when Haverhill, on fine running and passing by “Don” Massie and “Mai” Kimball, managed to score twice again and to take the lead, 21-13. An inspired Lawrence High eleven took the field for the second half and after a fine run to a touchdown by Guy Smith the score stood 21-19. Haverhill again scored but failed on the extra point. With 8 minutes remaining in the game, Sweeney and Smith “pepped things up” by their brilliant playing. Incidentally, this was the highest scoring game of the long Haverhill and Lawrence series. Five L. H. S. players were chosen for the “All Haverhill Opponent Team.” They were: Guy Smith, “Terry” Sweeney, “Bill” Quinlan, “Pat” Burke and “Bob” Fitzgerald. Memorial Stadium, Lawrence Lawrence 13 Lowell 13 This was the annual “Turkey Day” game with Lowell. The crowd was made up of 13,000 frenzied fans who witnessed a most disheartening game. L. H. S. scored first but Lowell came right back to tie the contest up. Lawrence’s touch¬ down was made on a 60 yard drive, while Lowell’s score came after Lowell recovered a fumble on the 1 yard line. Our second tally came in the third quarter when D’Angelo went 82 yards on an off tackle play. On the march to another touchdown Lawrence again fumbled and Lekitis of Lowell scooped up the ball and ran 98 yards to score. Little action happened after that and the game ended 13-13. Both the line and backfield played a stellar game and Lawrence High was proud of the team. I he 1950 team wishes Captain “Pat” Burke and the 1951 squad best of luck for the coming season. 112 ROBERT FITZGERALD Class of 1951 Basketball Before the 1950-1951 basketball season opened, the Lawrence High five was chosen by the “experts” to occupy the cellar of the Essex County League. But the Lancers of Lawrence showed no concern for these predictions by beating Salem High, the first victory for Lawrence at Saltonstall Gymnasium in twelve years. Then, the Blue and White swept through all opposition for the next six games with the scoring punch of Bill Quinlan and Captain Paul Derby, and the fine floorwork of John D’Angelo, Jack Donahue, Charles Rigoli, and Frank Ball. Front Row (left to right )—Frank Ball, Charles Rigoli, William Quinlan, Paul Derby, captain; John D ' Angelo, Robert Fitzgerald. John Donohue. Middle Row (left to right) — Thomas Murphy, manager; Maurice Leonardi, Kenneth Atkinson, John Barry, Thomas Gagnon, George Baker, James Hadley, Coach Webb. Last Row (left to right) — John Kennedy, Anthony Ramos, Nat Mugavero, Albert De Luca, Edwin Con to, Carl Pecci, Carl Larrabe. But the “Cinderella team” of Lawrence High just could not seem to click at the spacious Lynn English floor in dropping its first game by a score of 40 to 36 to a. spirited Lynn Classical aggregation. Tied for first place with a 7 and 1 record, the Blue and White bowled over its next two opponents before returning to the Lynn English floor to lose to the fighting Red and Grey of Lynn English. The next three games were won handily before our “fabulous five” met some stiff opposition from Haverhill High at the downriver court, winning by two points in a drive-in shot by Bill Quinlan, who played a terrific game. On our own floor we won easily over the Brown and Gold of Haverhill to attain the Essex County Championship and an invitation to the Eastern Massachusetts Basket¬ ball Tournament for the second consecutive year. For their outstanding playing. Bill Quinlan and Captain Paul Derby were selected on the Essex County All Star team. Then, a great Central Catholic High School team, sporting an amazing record of twenty wins and no losses, confidently invaded our gymnasium. The entire game was hard-fought, and it was a sad Red and Blue team that left L. H. S. that night after an “iron-man” quintet of scorers Bill Quinlan and Paul Derby, and playmakers John D’Angelo, Jack Donahue, and Charles Rigoli blemished their here-to-fore perfect record by a score of 48 to 41. Four days later, at the spacious Central Catholic Auditorium, the Red and Blue took their revenge by beating us 48 to 39. The very next afternoon, with the regulars playing very little of the game, we dropped a protested decision to Lowell High at the upriver court. The opening date of the “Tech Tourney” approached and “Webb’s Wonders” drew Boston English High as their hrst opponent. We took the floor at the Boston Garden a little afraid of the 15 and 0 record of the English team, as we showed by allowing them to pile up a half-time lead of twelve points. In the third quarter, the Boston five lengthened their lead to fourteen points before we started to peck away at that lead while ten thousand fans screamed encour¬ agement. Two baskets by John D’Angelo and Jack Donahue, and two more successive hoops by Bill Quinlan put us ahead fifty to forty-eight until English dropped in a free throw to make the score fifty to forty-nine at which point it stood when the final buzzer sounded. Captain Paid Derby threw in a grand total of twenty-eight point s, to lead the team in scoring. The next game we were matched against favorite Somerville High, and our dreams of victory in the “Tech Tourney” were shattered by a powerhouse Red and Blue team to the tune of 52 to 36. Thus, we concluded the season with a record of fifteen wins and four defeats. Bill Quinlan was high scorer during the regular season, coming in third in individual Essex County League scoring, while Paid Derby paced the team scoring in the overall competition. The varsity team was made up of the following: Captain Paid Derby, William Quinlan, Charles Rigoli, John D’Angelo, Frank Ball, Robert Fitzgerald, John Barry, James Hadley, Carl Larrabee, Kenneth Atkinson, Maurice Leonardi, and Captain-elect John Donahue. Returning for next year’s team will be Donahue, Barry, Atkinson, and Leonardi, along with Burke, Gagnon, Smith, Mugavero, and Baker, the out¬ standing players of the “J.V.’s”. The team was expertly coached by Mr. James Jordan and Mr. Edward Webb who took over at the half-way mark. They were ably assisted by Mr. George Driscoll and Mr. William Callagy. Mr. Mark H. Devlin was the Athletic Director and Thomas Murphy did commendable work as the student manager. CAPTAIN PAUL DERBY Class of 1951 Baseball On the 25th of April, the Lawrence High School baseball team opened its championship drive in the Essex County League. The Blue and White, a peren¬ nial power on the North Shore, will be striving this year to keep the pennant in Lawrence. Again leading the locals are Coach James F. Jordan and his competent assistant, William R. Higgins, who have devoted themselves to teaching the finer points of the game in order to produce winning teams. In his third year as head coach of baseball, Mr. Jordan has produced many fine teams, having two league championships to his credit. Returning from last year’s squad are: Captain-elect William Pedrick, an able 2nd baseman, Frank Ball, Robert Sinibaldi, Norman Karram, Bob Fitzgerald and Walter Keaney, all infielders; outfielders Leon Vitale, Roger Becotte and Walter Sweeney; pitchers Robert Corcoran and Joseph O’Neil, and catcher Paul Autiello. Lost to the team by graduation were players of such calibre as Jerry Callagy, an outstanding athlete, Eddie Jarosz, a pitcher who could be depended upon in the clutch, Captain Ed Peccorella, Frank Calabresi, Bill Ford and Gerry Dineen, all good stickers. The pitching staff of the 1951 squad is capable but inexperienced. Robert Corcoran and Joseph O’Neil, both Seniors, are returning from last year’s squad, while John Poremba, Anthony LaMela, Bart Cahill, Robert Pulaski and Ray Lynch have moved up front J.V. squad. Also, there are two newcomers, Francis Mossan and Edward Renting, son of a former Lawrence High star, who have looked exceptionally good. Holding down the backstop position we have Paul Autiello. Paul is just a Sophomore and with more experience should prove to be an able receiver. Around the infield, we find Bob Sinibaldi at first base. Bob is a flawless fielder and a power hither. Down at the keystone sack, easily scooping up hot drives, is Captain Bill Pedrick. At bat Bill is a terror to opposing pitchers and is an able leader both on and off the field. Nailing down the “hot corner’’ is Robert Fitzgerald of football and basketball fame. “Fitzie” is an able hitter and one of the “spark plugs” of the team. Moving now to the outfield we find Bill Quinlan patroling left field. He is a left field fence at the local ball park, he should become a great asset to Coach Jordan. Walter Sweeney, one of the finest outfielders in the league, is back at his old position in center field. “Terry”, a good hitter, led the league in triples last season and is looking forward to keeping his crown. Last but not least, we have Roger Becotte guarding right field. Roger is a ball hawk in the outfield and has a great throwing arm. Coaches Jordan and Higgins have been working out with their charges every day, getting them into shape. All we can do is wait until the season opens and hope that “Lady Luck” smiles upon us. JOSEPH O’NEIL Class of 1951 Track Team From Row (left to right) — A. Minasian, Gus Gucciardi, Louie Giarusso, Captain George Fraser, Terry Sweeney, Guy Smith, Stan Gradzewicz. Second Row (left to right )—Chuck ' Farness, Ted Chadwick, Ed Constantineau, Louie Sullivan, Clarence LaBonte, Jim l’urcell, John Mitchell, Fom Wilson. Back Row (left to right )— Buddy Torrissi, John Ziedie, James Riley, Boh Jackson, Jerry Collins, Don Perry, Pete Foster, Robert Uhl, Joe Young, Bob Borreli, Ernie Perry. Track Considering the serious disadvantage of an inexperienced team, with the exception oi the few returning veterans, the Lawrence High Track Team wound up the season with an admirable record. In the first meet the Perry-coached aggregation smashed the Phillips Academy Jayvees with a 40 to 32 score. In addition to this remarkable victory, the Lawrence men ca ptured six first places. The second victory proved more thrilling than the first when Lawrence crippled the powerful Lynn Englishmen with a score of 43 to 34. Again the Lawrence boys grasped six first places. In the long-anticipated class A state meet, Lawrence proved their might. This event, which is held in Boston Garden, is the highest competitive track meet in Massachusetts. Captain Fraser placed second in the 45 yard hurdles, forcing a Boston Latin boy to break the State Schoolboy record. Powerful Walter Sweeney won second place and missed the state championship in the shot-put event by only one half an inch. His dependable teammate Gus Gucciardi gained fourth place in the same event. Our third encounter resulted in a smashing victory over courageous Lynn Classical with the incredible score of 50 to 27. Our sticcess was further magnified when Captain Fraser cracked the Lawrence indoor 40 yard hurdles by one tenth of a second. Other first place winners of that meet were: Sweeney, Minasian, Purcell, Mitchell and Smith. Our only tie of the season occurred when we grappled with the Phillips Jayvees. Lawrence had been trailing until the relay tied the meet with a score of 314 The only meet to mar our otherwise perfect record occurred when our arch¬ rival Lowell, with a more powerful and experienced team handed Lawrence its only defeat. The leading scorers for Lawrence during the 1951 season were: Captain George Fraser, Walter Sweeney, George Minasian, Guy Smith, Gus Gucciardi, Leo Giarusso, Stanley Gradzewicz, John Mitchell, James Purcell, Ed Constan- tineau, Leo Sullivan and Jerry Collins. We owe the success of the season to the excellent coaching of Mister Ernest Perry. Also we all wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Mark Devlin, the faculty manager, whose efforts made it possible to attend the various meets. 118 Yearbook Committee Class Officers and Home Room Representatives 120 CLASS 121 Class History T HE change in school routine was the first we had witnessed after eight long years in grade school, but within two weeks we became accustomed to the ways ot high school life. Many firm friendships were established through the meeting of pupils during the various periods. One of the hardest pills to swallow was the continuous ridicule from the upper-classmen. We freshmen were just unsophisticated, naive, or “runts” according to their opinion. As our first year progressed, we found that high school was not all work, for several of the extra-curricular groups had representatives from our class. Many of us had our first taste of social life when we attended the Barn Dance sponsored by the Girl Reserves. We gained a new traditional rival when we met and defeated Central for the first time. At the graduation exercises Nancy Mahoney won the Perkins Prize. SOPHOMORE YEAR For those of us who had been in the Oliver School, the opening days seemed a rebirth of the freshman year. How eagerly some of us searched for the elevators and private staircases! Fall saw a change in headmasters: Mr. O’Leary, who died several months later, was succeeded by Mr. Lawlor. It was this year that the student council became a more active group. It brought about dancing in the gym, and in conjunction with this, a program of dance instruction was undertaken in an attempt to increase interest in the indoor recesses. On the field of sports, we again defeated Central 21-20. Patd Derby won the Perkins Prize. JUNIOR YEAR Many of us took advantage of the opportunity to join many of the new clubs being formed that fall. Our football team had very little to be thankful for, because on Thanksgiving- Day we were defeated by a merciless Lowell team, 55-0. Our season was not a failure, for we did repeat a victory over Central. The first Football Frolics was a tremendous success. Officers for all classes were chosen for the first time. Linder the able direction of Mr. Perry, cross-country running became Lawrence High’s fifth sport. Both the basketball and baseball teams brought honors to Lawrence by winning the county championships. At graduation, Bernadine Kennedy was awarded the Perkins Prize while Domenic Terranova received the Gerrish Geometry Prize. SENIOR YEAR Only two days after the end of the junior year, the world was again engaged in war. This glaring reality helped bring home the fact that we were seniors, and upon us rested the responsibility of building the future. When the football team showed up without a regular captain for the season, they chose a new one for every game. The Thanksgiving Day game ended in a disputed tie. Home room representatives and class officers were chosen and work was industriously begun on the year-book. This is only a brief summary of the highlights of our days in high school, but for every one of us there are fond memories that can never be forgotten. DOMENIC S. TERRANOVA, Class of 1951 Class Will and Testament W E, the class of 1951, realizing that our high school clays, as all other good things must come to an end do hereby adopt and execute this document to be our Last Will and Testament, with the intention ol bequeathing to the world in general, the undergraduates collectively and the class of ’52 specifically the following, derived from our extensive store of assets. To our principal, Mr. Lawlor, and the faculty we leave sincere appreciation for all their efforts in the past four years. Without their efficient teaching, sage advice, and undying patience, our graduating would not be possible. To our athletes we leave many praises for the manner in which they upheld the fine sportsmanship traditions of L. H. S. Our class president, Johnny D’Angelo, leaves his distinguished office and popularity to some fortunate Junior. Our vice-president, Guy Smith, leaves his many friends and athletic ability. Our secretary-treasurer, Rosalee Martellini, leaves her wonderful personality and position as head cheerleader to some deserving under-classman. Domenic Terranova leaves a portion of his brain to some less intelligent Freshman. Dot Johnson leaves her beautiful red hair to brighten the corridors in future years. Marion Pappalardo leaves to marry Ned. Barbara Rappaport leaves her excellent vocabulary. Claire Keenan and Mary Lou Roberge leave their booth in Morin’s for some seniors to enjoy next year. We, the Seniors as a whole, leave our worries and woes of the past four years, our fear of things that never happened, our hopes that were never realized, our homework that was never done, and all the other pleasures, problems and fun which is high school. To our successors, the class of “1952”, we convey our best wishes for a happy and successful Senior year. Our only hope is that they enjoy it as thoroughly as we did. This document, drawn up on the twenty-eighth (28) day of March, in the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-one (1951) is certified and sealed to be the official Last Will and Testament of the class of 1951. ANN McQUADE, Class of 1951 Class Prophecy E VERYTHING is quiet here in the hospital this evening but I still become excited when I think over our class reunion. During the week former chums arrived and what celebrities! ! ! Rosalee Martellini, the executive director of the Barden Model Agency, arrived with her famous girls: Norma Androian, Ann McQuade, Alvera Gelardi, Mary Ann Bonelli, Dorothy Johnson, and Marietta Shea. Of course the girls stayed at the beautiful Colonial Arms, a splendid hoted owned by Joseph Woloshin and staffed by Eileen O’Neil, Barbara Rheaume, Lillian Rossi, Jay DeLuca, and Eclwarcl Anderson. A stroll through the hotel lobby was reminiscent of a walk down the corridor of L. H. S. in years past. The smoke from the cigars was like a mist which, when it dissolved, revealed faces from yesterday. Seated in a comfortable chair was Domenic Terranova, his face never revealing the burden his shoulders carried as head of the Nevada Atomic Plant. Discussing the medical aspects of research with him were Dr. Patrick Zappala, Dr. Nicholas Young, and Dr. Martin Sullivan. Others in the group were Richard and Armand Dube, corporation lawyers for the Marsh Steel Company. The revolving door moved slowly as a dachshund made its way through, pausing to wait for its owner who proved to be Bernard Master, the well known stock broker. The outburst of laughter that issued from another large group was instigated by Walter (Terry) Keaney, a second Groucho Marx. Trying to “shoo out” autograph hunters was George Marshall, genial manager of the Colonial Arms. Looking as young as ever were Joyce Sullivan and Joseph Sheehan who have their own ice show. Members of the cast included Barbara Marsh, Carl Larrabee, Ann Quaglietta, Norma Williams, Marilyn Petzold, and Mary Ronsivalli. Fresh from Forest Hills was Norma Winters, winner of the U. S. lawn tennis title and who would be leaving shortly for England. Resplendent in sport togs but minus his goggles was George Fraser whose victory in the five hundred mile race at Indianapolis placed him in the lead for the 3A championship. Henry Fillipon, Joseph O’Neil John Rogers, Warren Student, all members of the Boston Red Sox, arrived after the game. It was good to see our fellow students and to relive the happi¬ ness we took so much for granted at good old L. H. S. The romantic music of Donald Timony and his orchestra drew a large crowd to the Blue Room at the hotel. Don’s music was billed as the sweetest music this side of Lowell. A tug at my sleeve brought me face to face with Edward Levine, who operates a brokerage concern. He told me about his trip from Chicago by air. On approaching the local airport, the wheels wouldn’t come down but pilot William Quinlan made an excellent belly landing. Edward’s dog which was in the luggage compartment was injured by a trunk and Ed immediately rushed him to the animal hospital run by veterinarian Neil Fleming. That there were no other injuries, one should give credit to the hostesses, Rosemary Regan and Elizabeth Karam. The reunion was of such importance that the local radio station LAWW had its ace announcer Bob Broadley describe the many highlights over a nationwide hookup. Television coverage was in charge of Frank Mitchell and a crew consisting of James Castle, Norman Fiore, and Pat Grillo. The reporters 126 on hand to cover the event were Patricia Burke, Associated Press roving writer, and Mary Lou Fortune of the United Service. Expected was Vincent Donovan, who had recently returned from the Russian War and whom the G. I.’s called “the modern Ernie Pyle”. Among those who found fame and fortune in Hollywood were Mary Ann DiGloria, Doris Morrison, and Leonard Sipiora, stars of the forthcoming picture written by Kenneth Gallant and produced by that well known million- naire Salvatore Ganto. The stars were accompanied east by Marilyn Brennan, Joan DePari, Don Earnshaw, and George O’Neil, noted lecturers. Not only did the graduates invade Hollywood but also the opera and the legitimate theatre. Acclaimed as the top in American opera was Mary Pacheco who shared the limelight willingly with the other local members of the com¬ pany, Rita Rodolico, Josephine Cirieco, Edward Farris, and Dorothy Boardman. Handling the off stage details were Frances Rossi as head costumer and Lillian Oliver as the arranger. Out front Frank Oliveri was seriously conducting his newest concerto with Frank Esile, Morris Grasso, and George Minasian as members of his orchestra. At the sound of footsteps in the corridor I poke my head out the “lab” door to see Nancy Crouch, Mary Despres, and Lorraine Despres coming on duty for the night shift. They are relieving several old friends, Shirley Fusco, Anita LePage, and Leona Shipp who along with Joan Palmer, Dorothy Young, Dorothy Lees, Claire Williams, and Marion Buco have made successful careers in nursing. Our wonderful surgeon is Dr. John Mahoney assisted by Dr. Bernard Thompson and surgical nurse Marolyn Silverman. Just a moment! The sweet voice of Eleanora. Pizzano, popular vocalist, is interrupted. The presidential votes have been tabulated and the next president of the United States will be Marion Marad who will have as her vice-president, Cynthia Zaft. Congratulations to them both and to miracle working campaign manager Jules Deschamps. Paul Derby, who refused the nomination, will be Marion’s Secretary of State. Just think! The ambassador to France will be Guy Smith and the Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Leland. Can you believe that the United States is going to be governed by former classmates? The field of beauty is practically run by Josephine Peccerillo who has won the title of “Miss America” for three successive years. T he title of “Mrs. America” was also copped by a Lawrencian, the former Jean Alonzi, while adorable Joan Marcinonis has decorated the cover of many a magazine. Hair stylist Thomas Early, assisted by Katherine Pelletier, dictates what the stylist gal will do to her hair, and publicity agents John Parent and Joseph Vaiknoras see that the little lady hears all abous these amazing styles. Beauty experts Evelyn Chell, Cynthia Kent, Beverly Kane, and Lucille Grillo determine the type of cos¬ metics to be used for various occasions. Although many found wealth and fame in distant parts of our country, many found positions and happiness in their old home town. One can find the last word in dresses at Helen (Fitzpatrick) and Ray’s (McGregor) Swank Shop where they may be assisted by Marilyn Cuddy, Mary Abate, Marilyn Kern, Carol Knapton, or Garolee Edwards. As for the males, they may be appropri- ately clothed by Bob Cavanaugh, Darcy Dowell, or Edward Weiner. Ladies’ hats to suit the male point of view may be found in a pleasant shop owned and operated by Jimmie Dwyer, assisted by a business staff composed of Mary Bonanno, Elizabeth Zablotski, Rose Conte, Teresa DeLuca, and Marjorie Hosty. Jane Fredette, Naureen Ford, and Alverna Zukas lend charm to the front office of the Telephone Company. Lawrence High School lost an excellent teacher in the person of Virginia Viel when she left to be married. Several other able representatives of our class in this field are Nancy Lostimolo, Bernardine Kennedy, Carol Herrmann, Lawrence Cavallaro, Donald Golan, Gus Gucciardi, and John D’Angelo, whose ability as a coach is nationally known. If you had seen the Tribune during the past few years you would realize that Marilyn Buco, Rita Desjardins, Elizabeth Donohue, Ruth Cameron, Paula Blanchard, Elaine Orroth, Mary Spampinato, Virginia Pageau, Marion Pappalardo, and Claire Kennedy had all left their successful careers to make that long trip down the aisle. Lucky Claire is the mother of two sets of twins and lives on a beautiful estate in Virginia. Jackie Jerome is the nurse for the babies. Several ’51 ’ers hold positions in our own fair city. Erwin Pearl is the city solicitor and John Galvin and Donald Gallant are two new members of the school committee. Mary Archer is a school nurse and Frank Sarcione is the alderman in the department of safety. Alfio Guiffrida has been appointed a policeman and Louise Bouchard is the new policewoman with Frances Puglisi and Arline Quinn working under her. EJncle Sam enticed a number of male graduates and we find several who are making military life their career. Dickran Babigian and Steve Sciuto are lieutenants in the army while Frank Regan is a lieutenant-commander in the navy. Walter (Terry) Sweeney, Richard Morway, Norman Krukonis, and Charles McGibbon have made the marines their career. The banquet, at which Rita DeSantis, Barbara Knightly, Claire Keenan, Patricia Mains, Anna Rapisardi, Rachael, Piantiggini, Anna Savastano, Betty Van Gert, Natalie Wotasek, Donald Perry, James Kalil, John Shaboo, Anthony Longo, Anthony DeAngelo, and Donald Gallant were numbered among those present, was something which will long live in our memories. For one evening the present was forgotten and we lived in the past and the past was ours. Only too soon it was over and we wended our way to our homes with happy thoughts of our young, carefree days. It.makes us realize that youth is so fleeting and that time like the tide waits for no man. We too understand now that wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, we graduates will always strive to bring honor upon our wonderful school, Lawrence High School.
