In Memoriam We, the Class of 1949, shall never forget our former headmaster, Mr. O’Leary. He guided us until our fourth year in High School, thus ending a brilliant career of almost half a century in education. His understanding nature and leadership have carried us far — and for these characteristics, he was outstanding. During his twenty-five years as head¬ master, he became an integral part of Lawrence High School. The qualities that made Mr. O’Leary near and dear to us were his calm dignity, his deep appreciative sense of spiritual values, his culture, his gracious ways, and his love for Lawrence High. Yes, we, the Class of 1949, will always cherish the memory we hold for Mr. O’Leary. We find it, hard in words to rhyme The sympathy so deep and true, That we, the class of “49” Will hold and cherish e’er for you. 5

Class Ode The ship of parting has arrived, On which we all must climb. Its plank is graduation night, The waters, years of time. The port from which we now embark Is high school days all done; Our goal is that of happiness — We’ll work till it is icon. To bear us to our goal we do Not ask for quiet seas, For all ive leant is courage, faith, To shun a life of ease. And when the loaves and billows roll, The sea is rough and high, We’ll thrust aside our every fear; “Sail on” will be our cry. The knowledge that we have acquired, The training we’ve received, We take as requisites along Till happiness’s achieved. Above all that, a faith in God Which time shall never alter; Though clouds and storms above us rise, Equipped we shall not falter. And as we board the ship tonight, The tears that we might shed Are for the mem’ries left behind And unknown paths ahead. But through it all we will not fear, Our Pilot, goes before. We’re sailing on to future years, To land on a nobler shore. Josephine Sessa, 1949
