CLASS ODE As fades the beauty of the verdant vine That burdened with its clusters earthward bends, As fly the robins from the prickly pine, So pass the faces of my school-day friends. The laughing water rippling in the lea, The stream reflecting the image of a flower, These both exist for an eternity, But youth is limited by day and hour. We pass, and only memories remain, The bustling in the corridors at morn, The clamor of the schcolbell’s loud refrain, Stone Caesar gazing on us all in scorn, The hum of study as we downward poured On books, a footstep, echoing in the hall, A foreign language on the dusty board, The feeling of security in all. We pause and take a final loving note Of friends and soul’s ambitions ere we part, A wordless sense of feeling in the throat, The knowledge of a loss within the heart. William R. LaCroix 6
