DEDICATION To All Our Classmates Who Entered The Armed Forces, And Helped Win VICTORY V. DENNIS E. CALLAHAN Superinteadent of Schools. LAURENCE J. O’LEARY Head Master, Lawrence High School CLASS ODE As fades the beauty of the verdant vine That burdened with its clusters earthward bends, As fly the robins from the prickly pine, So pass the faces of my school-day friends. The laughing water rippling in the lea, The stream reflecting the image of a flower, These both exist for an eternity, But youth is limited by day and hour. We pass, and only memories remain, The bustling in the corridors at morn, The clamor of the schcolbell’s loud refrain, Stone Caesar gazing on us all in scorn, The hum of study as we downward poured On books, a footstep, echoing in the hall, A foreign language on the dusty board, The feeling of security in all. We pause and take a final loving note Of friends and soul’s ambitions ere we part, A wordless sense of feeling in the throat, The knowledge of a loss within the heart. William R. A meeting is held in the school building every Monday evening, where subjects of public interest are debated by various members. The entertainment for the meetings is presented by the members, themselves, and in this way everyone has an opportunity to augment his talents by actual experience before the group. The various performers of the plays given over the sound system are chosen from members of the club. Every year some member of the club has brought some honors to his school from the American Legion Oratorical Contest, and this year Florence Meister won the city awards for the contest. This year’s orchestra had some fine material, but with many of the students working, they were unable to attend rehearsals regularly. The string section predominated over the brass and wood wind, but the brass came in to add vigor and color whenever it was necessary. During the school year, the orchestra accompanied the Glee Club at the school programs, and also rendered many beautiful selections. For the first time in five years, the State and New England, music conclaves are going to be held, but it has not been decided yet whether or not the Lawrence High School orchestra will take part in them. All those who played, under the able direction of Mr. Robert E. Sault, will always remember the time and effort he so freely contributed to keep the Lawrence High School orchestra up to its usual high standards. Irene E. Matchmaker 101 L.II.S. It holds its weekly rehearsals on Thursday eve¬ nings, and conducts one dancing party in the Spring, in the school hall, for members only. Mr. John T. Casey, who has been teaching at L.H.S. for a comparatively few years, has already made a name for himself with the faculty and student body alike. Willingly he accepted the task of heading the advertising committee for the 1946 yearbook. He gave unstintingly of his time like the good sport he is and put a lot of hard work into it. His unfailing good humor and sage advice helped a good many of us inexperienced adv. salesmen out of several difficulties. More credit than prob ably anyone realizes goes to him for the success of this yearbook. Our hats are off to you for a fine fellow, Mr. Casey, and thanks a million from the class of forty-six. 106 Jo7 LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM a ct £ © O O © be u © © o £ N © ft (O rt £ © A H cT c N rt ft. ps ft a A © - a PS © a © Q m © © a as ft a a ft £ rS © . ©2 © M rtj © S a V) as © © a u ct A © a rt © « . £ «3 c« 5 — a r ps ££ S ' a © ft a aa a a t« © . © — h 2 S e ' S J3 -fi o «j i-s D ' C beg © a © C O g U • v a — « ft O a -a o a Q O ”s l l K. £ J? DEVLIN, JR. TRAINER JAMES J. MURPHY ASST. COACH JAMES J. JORDAN CAPTAIN RAYMOND PALMEGIANO ASST. COACH ERNEST PERRY STUDENT MGRS. DOUGLAS WATSON FACULTY MGR. JOHN W. KENNEDY ROBERT GAGNON AND ROBERT CAHILL Lawrence 6 Swampscott 0 The third time we had been invited to the Lynn Jamboree, and this time we were the victors winning 6-0. Palmegiano’s throwing was excellent while Walker’s catches were spectacular. The winning score came on a pass from Palmegiano to Waflker. Lawrence 7 1 St. James 0 Again a pass from Palmegiano to Walker was good for the score and then Palmegiano’s placekick made the score 7-0. Lahey starred at center for the home team whilie Burnham did some fine work from his guard position. Lawrence 12 Revere 26 Lawrence scored first with Palmegiano going over from the five yard line. His- try for the extra point was not good. Then Revere put on its power and scored almost at will after Lawrence’s touchdown. Palmegiano scored Lawrence’s second touchdown a few minutes before the close of the game making the final score Revere 26, Lawrence 12. Lawrence 14 Manchester Central 13 This game was a back and forth affair with Law¬ rence finally winning out at the end. Lawrence scored first when Callagy went over from the three yard line putting Lawrence ahead. Palmegiano’s try for the extra point was good to put the Lawrence team ahead 7-0. Manchester took the kickoff and Harring¬ ton of the home team raced 70 yards for a touchdown. The try for the extra point was no good. Manchester then scored the next touchdown and they got the extra point too. Lawrence was not to be denied, and they came right back to score on a pass from Palmegiano to Belanger. Palmegiano then rushed the winning point. The line play of Donovan and Kalitka was outstanding in this game. Lawrence 7 Boston College High 27 This game was well played in the first half with Boston leading 14-0. At the beginning of the second haf ' f Palmegiano went over for a touchdown and Belanger added the extra point to make -the score 14-7. After this Lawrence folded and Boston College went on to win. Perocchi’s end play and Sanderson at the tackle spot starred for the Lawrence team. Lawrence 6 Lynn English 6 A game played in the mud and rain. Walker’s brilliant end run put Lawrence in the Head 6-0. Then Lynn came to life and scored a touchdown to end the game in a deadlock. Belanger’s hard running and Callagy’s blocking featured the game for the home team. Lawrence 7 Nashua 6 A thrilling game from start to finish which was won in the last 20 seconds of prlay. A long pass from Captain Palmegiano to John Walker who made a sensational catch of the ball for a touchdown. Belan¬ ger then rushed the winning point for a well-deserved Lawrence victory. The whole Lawrence club played brilliantly with Trignani starring as a running back. Lawrence 6 Peabody 14 A night game played at Lynn’s Manning Bowl with Peabody winning out at the end. The Devlin aggregation played well but Peabody had just a (little bit more power than Lawrence. Belanger’s touch¬ down was -the only cheerful feature that Lawrence could shout about. Captain-Elect Pete Kalitka did some fine defensive work from his tackle position. Lawrence 7 Haverhill 7 This was a well played game with Haverhill scoring first and leading during the first and second periods 7-0 on a long run and the all important extra point. Starting the second half Lawrence Hooked like a new team and they down to business on doing some¬ thing about the score. Play by play they gained constantly until finally Belanger of the Lawrence team went over for the score. He also rushed the extra point to tie the game at 7 all. The rest of the game was a passing one but at the end the game ended in a tie. Belanger’s running featured the game while Lahey’s tackling was outstanding. Lawrence 7 Lowell 14 This year’s annual game was played at Lowell and the Lawrence line-up was as follows: Left End Left Tackle Left Guard Center Right Guard Right Tackle Right End Quarterback Left Halfback Right Halfback Fullback Steve Perocchi Pete Kalitka Chuck Donovan Dick Lahey Danny Burnham Don Sanderson Jack Walker Ray Palmegiano (C) Roland Belanger Fred Connors Lenny Callagy The first half from the Lawrence point of view was an ideal one. Palmegiano on a half spinner went fifteen yards and Lawrence lead 6-0. He then kicked the extra point to put his team ahead 7-0. Fine rush¬ ing by Belanger, Callagy, and Connors and it looked as if Lawrence was off for another touchdown but as luck had it time ran out and the score remained Law¬ rence 7, Lowell 0. The second half started and some 12,000 football fans thought this half was going to be a repeater but as things, have it they were mistaken. From the very start Lowell looked like a new ball- team. Everything they did was right and everything Lawrence did went wrong. Lowell took the advantage and in doing so they scored two consecutive touch¬ downs and they also added the two extra points to make the final score of the game Lawrence 7, Lowell 14. Those boys who were playing their last game for Lawrence were Bill Brady, Chuck Donovan, Dick Lahey, Arthur Dalton, Danny Burnham, John Walker, and Ray Palmegiano. I wish to express my sincere wishes to the undergraduates for the seniors and my¬ self, and no matter if you win or lose next year you will at least know that we, the Class of 1946, will be behind you 100%. Good luck, fellers, and win one for “46”. Tommy Ruffen dropped in 14 points in a fine clutch performance that sent our team ahead in the last few seconds. An impressive 31-25 victory over a strong Alumni quintet led by George Toomey opened the season on January 2. The team won its next two games, defeating Salem 33-24, and Gloucester, 33-23. The playing of Ray Palmegiano was notable in both contests. e suffered our first defeat at the Lynn English Gym in one of the roughest games played in the Essex County League this year, or any year. The crowd broke out onto the floor at one time in the final period, and this interference undoubtedly had a great deal to do with English forging ahead to a 29-17 score. Beverly gave a marvelous exhibition of basket shooting in outspeeding our boys 50-30 in the next game played. A weak Peabody went down to defeat, 37-17, on January 18, and on the following Tuesday we eked out a thrilling 25-24 win over Lynn Classical. The team lost its next two games 24-31, to Salem, and 27-49, to Gloucester. We had beaten both of these teams previously, and it is an un¬ usual fact that the team did not win a single series during the season. The high point of the season was reached when the team avenged its previous defeat by beating Lynn English in a stunning 38-30 upset. The boys all played over their heads, giving a fine exhibition of basketball as it should be played. Ray Palmegiano and Tommy Ruffen, partic¬ ularly, were outstanding, scoring 14, and 13 points respectively. During the next three weeks the team fell into a six-game losing streak. We dropped games to Peabody, 23-26; to Beverly, 42-50; to Lynn Classical, 39-50; and two contests to the championship Haverhill High Team: 15-32, 17-43. The team lost its first game with Lowell by one point, 22-23, and then came back to win the aforementioned last game of the year, 32-30. Although the won and lost record wasn’t impressive, hopes are much brighter for next year, with four out of the five starting players back for another season. Ray Palmegiano, a four-year veteran, was the only senior member of the first five. He was high-scorer with 157 points, scored from the guard and center positions. Tommy Ruffen, a junior, netted 143 from a forward position. The other forward, Johnny Fenton, possesses a good eye, and should develop into quite a scorer next year. The Captain-elect for next year, Steve Perocchi, was a great defensive player, and should make an ideal leader. Two juniors, Johnny Papazian and Sig Weissbein, split up the other starting sport between them, and Ted Kershaw saw considerable service at forward. Boys who played with the second team were Maynard Lebowitz and George Wermers, seniors; Tom Petzy, a junior; John Dean and Carmen Martellini, sophomores. Francis Keville, the captain, is serving with the U. S. Navy. Stephen Perocchi was the Acting Captain, and Joseph Lawlor, the Student Manager. The squad was ably handled buring the season by Head Coach Mark H. Devlin, Jr., Assistant Coach James F. Jordan, Faculty Manager John W. Kennedy, and Trainer James J. Murphy. Joseph A. The following lettermen reported: Capt. Frank Foucher, Rolland Trignani, Joseph Zangri, Raymond Palmegiano, Donald Mathews and James Mullen. The outlook wasn’t very bright with only six lettermen returning, but they were well divided to give Mr. Perry several lettermen in each event. In the dash was Donald Mathews and James Mullen; hurdles, Frank Foucher and James Mullen, 300 yd. run; Don Mathews, 600 yd. run; Joe Zangri, 1,000 yd. run; Frank Foucher, high jump; Rolland Trignani, Frank Foucher and Jimmy Mullen, broad jump; Rolland Trignani, shot- put, Ray Palmegiano. With the help of Johnny Collins, Romeo Mackiewcz, and Fred Connors com¬ bined with the lettermen, the season was a good one. The first meet was with Lynn English. Lynn on paper was a strong team. Frank Foucher won the hurdles and thousand yard run. Trignani won the broad jump and high jump, Mathews finished second in the dash and Mullen third in the hurdles. Fred Connors finished second in the six hundred and Romeo Mackiewcz won the short-put. The final score was Lawrence 42, Lynn thirty-five. The second meet was with Andover J. V. Lawrence won, thirty-seven to twenty-six. Capt. Foucher paced the team again with three first, winning the hurdles, thousand and a tie for first in the high jump with Rolland Trignani. Mathews won the three hundred and finished second in the dash. Collins finished third in the dash and Connor second in the six hundred. Lawrence swept the hurdles and high jump. Lynn Classical was our next opponent and here we suffered our first loss 40-37. Despite the loss, Foucher again won the hurdles and thousand. Mullen again ran third in the hurdles, Mathews again finished second in the dash and third in the 300. Trignani tied for first in the high jump and won the broad jump. Connors got a third in the six hundred. Next came Somerville with the state champ in the dash, who just beat out Don Mathews in the fastest time in this year’s season. Capt. Foucher won both the hurdles and the 1,000 again and the high jump. Mullen annexed another third in the hurdles, while Kathman won the broad jump, to beat Trignani for his first defeat all year. Connors won the six hundred, Mathews won the three hundred and Mackiewcz won the shortput. Last but not least came our traditional opponent, Lowell. This was the final meet of the year, and our first trip out of town. Lowell won the Northeastern meet and were at home, so they were overwhelmingly picked to win. Lowell boasted Wojcik and Abrams, two of the best men in the State, Wociz, the best six hundred and fourth best hurdler. Capt. Foucher won the hurdles in a brilliant race, and in another sparkling performance won the 100 yd. run. Mathews finished third in the dash, Collins second in the 300 yd. dash. “Trig” won the broad jump and Beshara fin¬ ished third. Lawrence swept the high jump, a triple tie for first among Jim Mullen, Lrank Foucher and Trignani. Romeo finished second in the shortput. The final score was Lowell 45, Lawrence 30. Lawrence finished tenth at the Northeastern meet with four points. Mackiewcz was second in the shortput and “Trig” tied for third in the high jump. So ended a good season and laurels to Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Perry. The lettermen were: Foucher, Mullen, Trignani, Collins, Beshara, Kathman, Mathews, Connors and Mackiewcz. James F. This constitutes an average of .736, a remarkable feat. Year after year he has taken his material and has shaped up a team that Lawrence could be proud of. During the past 4 years he has compiled a record of 55 wins and 11 defeats for a record of .833. Three of these teams were Essex County League Champions while last year they were runner-ups. Assisting Coach Devlin is Jimmy Jordan, amiable and capable assistant. Veterans from last year’s team are Captain George Veilleux, center field; “Ray” Palmegiano, left field; Fred Connor, right field; and James McGregor, pitcher. Also avail¬ able are the following reserves: Thomas Ruffin, 1st base; “Ted” Kershaw, short stop; “Ed” Samra, 3rd base; Pete Kalitka, catcher; and John Papazian, M. Lebowitz, A. Forgioni, in the outfield, and Edison Marini, pitcher. Coach Devlin is fortunate in bringing back intact last year’s outfield. They are “Ray” Pal¬ megiano, George Vellieux, Fred Connors. “Ray” held a varsity berth for the last three years and has not missed a game yet. He found his batting eye last year and “smashed” the apple for .333. [n center field is Captain Vellieux. Although an outfielder, he can also handle the hot corner in a capable manner. George is no sissy at the bat either. He has powerful arms and can certainly give the ball a long ride. On the bases he is a demon with his speed and dashes from base to base like the wind. Fred Connors completes this natural outfield at right field. A very fast lad, he can be counted on in coming through in the pinch. With this trio roaming the green, Coach Devlin can be sure of a hard hitting, fast working outfield. Around the infield we will go now. Our first stop will be at first base. There are no worries here as this position is practically secured by Thomas Ruffin, a member of the Junior class. “Tom” is the third consecutive southpaw to handle this position in the last six years. He can handle anything that comes his way and has a quick arm and sharp eye. A powerful potential hitter, Lawrence is fortunate in having a boy of this caliber to handle this difficult position. At shortstop is “Ted” Kershaw. Ted started last year’s season as a regular at this position but had to give up the sport due to illness. He is well again, so we can all expect him to show up at his old position. A member of the sophomore class and regular third baseman on the second team is “Ed” Samra, one of the finest prospects to enter the high school for a number of years. Great things are expected of this newcomer, for he is a powerful batter and tears up the hot corner like another “Jim” Tabor. He has a rifle arm and shoots the sphere across the infield like a comet. This completes our trip around the infield so let’s take a look at the pitching problem. Expected to bear the brunt of the pitching task is James McGregor, member of last year’s varsity. Jim won two games while losing none. A capable pitcher with agreat ability and unusually power¬ ful with the stick, he hit over .500 last year and was frequently used as a pinch hitter. He has a sharp curve and cool head, and rips them down the middle in the pinch. Another pitcher with great stuff, although he did not pitch any varsity games last year is Edison Marini. A well built lad with plenty on the ball, he can be expected to win his share of games. This comprises the probable line-up on opening day, April 20, 1946, except for the catching position. Aram Kuyoomjian, a member of the senior class and Pete Kalitka, are the two can¬ didates with Aram proba bly getting the nod because of his greater speed along the base paths. Aram is not only a great hitter and good catcher but can play practically any position on the diamond though he prefers catching above all. He has a great arm and whips them down the middle to nail many a man who has tried to steal a base. Pete Kalitka can give him plenty of competition as he is equally as good, although not quite so fast. May the best man win. With plenty of reserves of almost equal ability, this year’s team should be right up there with the best of them. Here’s wishing you good luck boys, we know you will all be trying your best, but win or lose, cover yourselves with the glory of your old “Alma Mater,” L. H. S. You must admit, they did improve the looks of the Blue and White on the field and what they did to the morale of all cannot be overlooked. The Captain of the Cheerleaders sincerely wishes that the office staff as well as the faculty have forgotten, or should I say, forgiven us for the manner in which we finally managed to include girls in our group of cheerleaders. Femininity in our group has helped to bring out greater school spirit, and to them we extend congratulations for a job well done. They were a great inspiration and I’m sure that their leader, Gen Yanukonis deserves mention for the wonderful way in which she and her girls cooperated. Of course the boys enjoyed working with them, and to Emil Witkie¬ wicz, their leader, we say “thanks” to a swell fellow. A member of our faculty,-Miss ’Bailee, we, the cheerleaders, thank sincerely for her patience and tolerance. Janet Haynes leaves her very pleasant disposition. Last, but by no means least the numerous other mem¬ bers of this graduating class too many to mention here have some outstanding characteristics which they leave to posterity — classmates who left us to join the colors leave us with a feeling of security that our Lawrence High School and others all over the country shall con¬ tinue to hold their annual graduation exercises. Barbara R. Dwyer 120 History of The Class of 1946 As defined in our old pal the dictionary, history means a narration of facts and events arranged chro¬ nologically or otherwise with their causes and effects. Now that we know the exact meaning of the word his¬ tory, let’s go back four years ago, September 24, 1942. The day that we were about to embark upon our long awaited high school career, the day we went down, a new and frightened class, the class of “46”. We were the second freshmen class to attend the Oliver School, which gave us the perfect chance to get to know each other real well. Remember our first day? How proud we were to be going to high school, and how we stood in front of the school with that little frightened feeling tapping at our hearts, wondering if we’d find our rooms, and if we’d be placed with some of our pals, and oh how happy we were when we spied a familiar face. Our predecessors certainly did a good job of dis¬ maying us with the stories of “loads of home work”, and the teachers being mean and cold, but then we soon found out a little later that they weren’t as bad as they were put up to be. The Friday Frolics started that year and those who went will never forget the swell times they had. The baseball team won the Essex County League championship, and making a fine representation for the class of ’46 was Ray Palmegiano, who was the only freshman who was on the first string, and the only freshman to be a 3-letter man. In March, Nat Dwyer and Charles Preising were voted the most popular students in the annual popular¬ ity contest, conducted by the Lawrencian. At graduation Mary Creeley and Donald Wake¬ field were awarded the Perkins Prizes. So our Freshman year came to a close and we were dismissed for our summer vacation. SOPHOMORE YEAR When we came back to school in September, we were still the same frightened group, for we were about to go into the real high school building, and colleague with the much envied upper classmen. Again we were set to wondering . . . again wondering if we’d find our rooms in the big building, and if we’d make new friends, and how our teachers would be. Again we found out that this new group of teachers that we had to cope with were O. K. in our estimation. Despite the fact that we were defeated by both Haverhill and Lowell, the football team still rated A-l with us. After Christmas, the basketball season opened with Francis Kivell, Joe Lawlor and Ray Palmegiano as sophomore representatives. In March, Nat Dwyer was re-elected in the popularity contest and for the boys, Charles Preising won the title. The baseball team for the second consecutive year won the Essex County League championship and went to the state tournament. Again representing our class was Ray Palmegiano. At graduation, Mary Creeley and Jay Slosberg were awarded the Perkins Prizes. It seemed as though our sophomore year fairly flew by ... so leaving another happy year behind, we went out for our summer vacation. JUNIOR YEAR When we entered school in September we were no longer the wondering wide-eyed pupils of previous years, for now. we really felt and were part of the high school. On Thanksgiving Day, Lawrence High defeated Lowell High in one of the most exciting games in many years. We won’t ever forget how Ray Palmegiano scored the extra point in the last few minutes of the game, thus making the score 13-12. Making a fine showing for the Junior class on the football team was Chuck Donovan, Jack Walker, Bob Rinehold, Stan Brown, and Dick Lahey. As good things came to an end so did the football season, and Ray Palmegiano was elected captain for 1946, and the players were honored with a banquet. During our Junior year, we lost one of our top notch fellows, who was loved by all, and he was Bill Donlevy who was stricken while serving in the Coast Guard. For when he passed away, one of the brightest lights in the class of ' 46 went out. Right around that time the Navy needed men and was calling for thepi every day, and we certainly missed Stan Brown and Bob Rinehold when they went into the service. We were all proud of our basketball team when they went to Lynn and won the General Electric Tournament, and upon completion of the basketball season, Francis Kivell was elected captain for the next year. Again in March the annual popularity contest was held and again won by Nat Dwyer and Ray Palme¬ giano. As April came around the corner, so did baseball, and our team made a fine showing by coming in tide in the Essex County League for the third conse¬ cutive year. Then came the annual Junior-Senior prom. Remember how excited we were to go? For this was to be our first school prom. So most of us went and long will be remembered our first school prom. At graduation Mary Creeley and Jay Slosberg won the Perkins Prizes. So here we were at the end of our Junior year, and Seniors to be . . . oh what a feeling. SENIOR YEAR After an enjoyable vacation, we returned to school in September. Yes, here we were, and it was hard to believe that we were the Seniors of good old L. H. S., the same awkward and lost-looking group that attended the Oliver School three years- ago. To start the year off right Claire Gaffney was elected editor of the Lawrencian, and did a very fine job of getting the copies in from the staff. Our annual Thanksgiving game was postponed on account of rain, but was played a few days later. Even though we lost by the score of 14-7 to Lowell, the team still ranked high in our estimation. Quite a few out of the senior class went out for football, and we musn’t forget the outstanding work that Capt. Ray Palmegiano, Johnny Walker, Dick Lahey, Chuck Donovan, Dan Burnham and Arthur Dalton displayed throughout the “46” season, and then they were later honored with a banquet. 121 Captain Ray Palmegiano had a great honor bestowed upon him when he became a four letter man in two consecutive years, for he is the first boy in the entire history of the high school to make four letters • in both his Junior-Senior years. Will we ever forget how the L. H. S. students met in the common two nights in a row and almost came on the verge of striking? These mass meetings were h,eaded by a committee of ten, which included Kitty Alekel (the only girl with enough nerve to get up and fight), Bill Willet, Red Donahue, Ray Match¬ maker, Jim Mullen, and the others were Juniors. How they met with Mr. O’Leary, and placed our demands to him, which were: girl Cheerleaders for football games, privilege of taking off coats, and ties in class room during warm weather, active working student council with some authority, and more student dances in the high school gymnasium. When Mr. O’Leary heard our demands, we were all very satisfied with the results, for we got everything we wanted, and Mr. O’Leary was swell about everything. Our class-, the class of “46’’ will certainly be re¬ membered for we were the first ever to have girl cheerleaders in the history of Lawrence High. Fred Ramey, Gen Yanukonis and Emil Witkawitz were voted to be head cheerleaders, and lead their groups for the first time in the Haverhill and Lowell games. Our hats went off to them for we were all proud of them, and the cheerleaders were also honored, along with the football team in the annual football banquet. So our first want went through, and went over big. The next thing we did was to elect home room rep¬ resentatives, and from them, the representatives se¬ lected four members to make up part of the Student Council. They were our vice-president Jim Mullen, our secretary-treasurer Nat Dwyer, Kitty Alekel, who worked so hard to help to get our demands, and Chuck Preising, who rated with us as a perfect all around fellow. Our other want soon followed during the basket¬ ball season when we had our social. This Senior-Junior social was the first dance ever to be held in the gym with the exception of our annual prom. Two other socials followed. In the latter part of November we held the class election and elected Ray Palmegiano, President; Jim Mullen, Vice-President; and Nat Dwyer, Secretary- Treasurer. Then basketball season started and our team lost . one of its best players when Captain Francis Kivell joined the Navy. While losing good players we also lost Joe Lawlor when he fell and hurt himself, and was unable to play on the team making Ray Palme¬ giano the only veteran on the blue and white team. In January, the Year Book Committee which was chosen by the class officers, and Mr. Casey met and started on getting ads for our (this) year book. They, commonly known as the “hustlers” should be given credit and thanks for the splendid work they did. In February, Florence Meister and Joseph Prone represented our school in the annual American Legion Oratorical contest. Florence Meister delivered such a fine oration that she was declared the winner, bestowing upon our school another honor. The Lawrencian held it’s annual popularity con¬ test and Nat Dwyer held the honor of winning it for four years in a row, and for the boys, Ray Palmegiano came in, winning two years in a row. Rachel Lagueux for four consecutive years was our newspaper reporter and the first girl to be Law¬ rence High School’s radio reporter. Not only being Vice-President, Jim Mullen also displayed great work in track. Surely we won’t forget the swell time we had during our recesses and the feuds between the Soro- Wha-Nee Sorority and the Club “13”, the fun we had decorating the gym for our socials and especially for our prom, which brings to mind the super signs and posters that Aram Kuyoomjian made for our special occasions. I’m also very sure that the night of the prom will always be placed in our minds and hearts as the out¬ standing social event in our high school days. Although we a l looked forward with great anxiety to the night that we would all assemble down at the stadium to receive our diplomas, there wasn’t one there whose heart didn’t tighten up at that thought of leaving our “Alma Mater” and the friends and teachers who became so dear to us during those four years. So when we sang our school song for the last time together, and walked off the field (the one in which we witnessed many a thrilling football game), with heads held high and tearful eyes we knew deep within our hearts that we were leaving behind us four of the happiest years of our life. RACHEL (Ray) LAGUEUX 122 PROPHECY Class of 1946 June 12, 1956. Dear Diary, I was sitting at my desk in the California branch office of the N. Y. Herald Newspaper today, when Marion Monty, who is a reporter on the paper, brought me a letter from my old class president, Ray Palmegiano, in¬ forming me that the class of 1946 was having a reunion in New York at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, June 14. As I read on Ray told me that he was now coaching the All- American football team at Holy Cross. Among the pro¬ fessors at the college were George Boyd, professor of Chemistry, and his versatile colleague, Harry Tail. I immediately wired Ray that I would be delighted to attend, and began making plans for the trip. First I got in touch with Dot Cowie and Mary Louise Kennedy who were the owners of Hollywood’s most elite “C and K” Fashion Shoppe. They agreed to meet me at the airport the next day, accompanied by two of their lovely models, Dorothy Donahue and Bernice Gaffney. I never would have been able to get reservations on the plane, had it not been for that man-about town Jimmy Mullen who as one of his many sidelines is vice-president of the airline between LosAngeles and New York. He said that he would “buzz” over to the reunion also—so to hold everything until he arrived. This evening, mostly out of curiosity Marion and I decided to visit a new night club that had just opened. Imagine our surprise when we were greeted at the door by beaming Joe Habib along with his happy-go-lucky partner Joseph Coco. They told us that they had received the money to open the club from the million-dollar heiress, Gen Yanukon’s, who was vacationing in Florida. We were led to a ringside table and told that we had quite a surprise in store for us. The lights dimmed and the spotlight picked out the bandleader. I couldn’t possibly miss the smil ' ng face of Bob Lacey. He introduced each member of his famous band starting with Bill “Kitten Fingers” Welsh on the piano, Charlie “Paradiddle” Preis- ing on the drums, Ray Metzmakers at the trumpet, and Jack Donahue cn the clarinet. As if I hadn’t had enough surprises for one day, charming Mary Garret was his vocalist. Donald Wakefield also shared honors as a crooner, and funny man of the band. It seems that the two Joe’s agreed that the home talent was best, for during the evening the famous dance team of Almeda Zula and Ty Vens, now Mr. and Mrs. Vens, made their appearance The glamoruus mistress of ceremonies was Frances Ril- len. A flurry of excitement livened up the evening when a crowd of autograph hunters rushed on Marilyn Harvey, the prominent stage and screen star, who was accom- pan : ed by the illustrious movie idol, Jack Walker. They are currently appearing in the movie hit “Silly Socks” produced, directed and written by the wizard of the eye, Philip Winn, ably assisted by Shirley Kiel, a young lady on her way to the top as a technical movie director. June 13, 1956 Dear Diary; I arose early this morning to get to the airport on time. As I glanced over the morning paper, I noticed on the sports page where the horse, owned by the socialite race fans Bernice Page, Tess Rivard and Alice Thom, had won the orange handicap. The rider of the horse was that lady-killer Bob Poulin. Just at this moment the doorbell rang and Jimmy Mullen’s secretary walked in with our tickets. Marion and I were amazed to be greeted by Shirley Farrell. She was leaving the airlines after two years to join her husdand who is still in the Navy, and was being replaced by Patricia Ford. Just as we were leaving for the a ; rport, Mary Louise called and said that Dot had been taken ill and was at the LosAngeles hospital. We hurried right over to see her and were greeted by a very efficient receptionist whom we readily acknowledged as being Dolores Sackler and who should be sitting talking with her but Marilyn Moeckel and Anna Praetz who were vacationing in California. Dolores directed us to Dot’s room and outside in the corridor were Barbara and Natalie Dwyer, full fledged nurses at the hospital, and a handsome young doctor, Charlie Brainerd were in conference. Charlie told us that Dot merely had indigestion and would join us in New York later. He told us that Blanche Burrows, Marion Sp’nney, Gerry Eichorn, Shirley Healey and Bernice Taylor, were nurses at the hospital and Ruth Chadwick was the head nurse’s medical secretary. The greatest surprise came when I bumped into an excited young man, passing out cigars. I was about to say I didn’t care for any when I recognized Bill Corey, who had just become the proud father of twin boys. He couldn’t attend the reunion as he managed a large hotel and was needed there. One of Tommy Donahue’s slick taxi cabs hurried us across town to the airport. I thought that the stewardess’ voice sounded familiar and as I glanced around I saw Shirley Pearson and Anne Gaffney. They surprised us further by telling us that Barbara Harrington, Dot Lyle, Dot Ludwig, Frannie Pineau and Shirley Walker all at¬ tended air-hostess school together. Also, ' ithat Carol Bradley’s new fashion magazine was voted the best in the country, and why not with Bea O’Leary, Donna Boucher and Claire Fairburn as models. Of course the fact that George Wermers photographs these beautiful women is a big asset to the magaz ne. Editorials are shared by Claire Gaffney and Dorothea Kelleher. As we turned on our personal radios, I remembered that Moira Higgin’s radio program was being broadcast at this time. She was interviewing Rachell Legueux, author¬ ess off the years’ best sellng novel. Also on the program was the em ' nent criminal lawyer, Alfred Mann and his private detective Bob Murphy—a real Holmes and Watson affair. The feature attraction was the appearance of those enchanting misses, Betty Watton and Eileen Cloogan, 123 singing the songs they made famous. As her program came to a close, a smooth voiced announcer signed off as John Devine. At this point a ruddy, good looking pilot came sauntering down the aisle. As I looked closer I knew it was Bobby Quinlan. I should have guessed that his twin brother Danny would not be far away, and sure enough he was the other pilot of the plane. They told me that Charlie Donovan was a Hollywood news reporter, and the only one those tempermental beauty stars would allow to interview them. Must be that personality! Danny asked me if I had noticed that Joe Lawlor was aboard. He was on his way to New York on business, but planned to join us at the reunion. He is now the well-known banker who has made such an enormous fortune. Among the other bankers at his office building were Bill Brady and Arthur Smith, and who should be guarding all these fortunes but Alfred McGrath as capta n of the police force. Nice job! More news of our classmates was ex¬ changed and I learned that Justine Devlin and Barbara Hayes had remained in Lawrence to teach. Catherine Stevenson was happily married in the ole’ home town. Shirley Pearson then handed me a wire from those three adventurous explorers, Jane McKallagay, Eileen Green, and Ruth Nelson. They had been in Africa doing research and exploration work on the atomic bomb. They were now flying from England, and I could hardly wait to greet my old friends in New York. I was aston¬ ished to learn that at the head of their expedition were the famous chemical experts Alan Lederman and Jason Rosenberg. As we neared Laguardia airport we all were wild with anticipation at seeing our dear old high school pals. As we stepped off our plane, the plane from Boston was just arriving, bringing Pat Liversidge, a dancing teacher, Phyllis Peterson, who owned a chain of drug stores, Lillian Wagenback, the famous game huntress, as well as Marilyn Donovan, Sheila Gibbons and their respective families. We then went to our hotel where still more “46’ers” awaited us. I couldn’t begin to write down all the friends I met today and at the reunion tomorrow it will be even a greater thrill to see our classmates joined together once again to reminisce over the happy, joyful memories of those wonderful years spent at L. H. S. — Goodnight dear Diary.
