Book learnin'. Not much fun, really. But at Bell, the learning experience went beyond readin'. 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. Several classrooms used new hands-on techniques to help students learn. Government classes learned about a 4944 Supreme Court case by enacting a trial, complete with nine Justices, defense and prosecuting attorneys, and witnesses. Presentations and projects were used as tools in history, English, and foreign languages to promote education. With all the strict policy changes, better education was a must, and teachers and students cooperated to reach new heights in academic energy. During the Government trials, heated debates carried on outside of class, as decisions were flnally, painfully, made. Verdicts varied from class to class, remaining only partially with the actual Kormatsu case of the 194O's. 9-as 'l0PLEFI':KlmDou1dylslovhl' lna1hlLlFI':loganChod0crcshualhrclong day. The Year Started Ott fix With A Bang Metal scraping against metal, the squeal of lock- ing brakes, and the high-pitched shattering of breaking glass were sounds all too familiar to sever- al students. Broken headlights, missing bumpers, and crunched hoods and fenders provided visual testi- mony to the collisions experienced. The thrill of driv- ing, the ever-present challenge of the open road. and simple two-point turns took on new meaning as accidents occurred just once too often. Insurance rates sky-rocketed from barely affordable to com- pletely unbearable, and jobs, for some, became a must.
