This media has gradually changed from Egyptian wall carvings to our modern day pen and paper. Now, students have the opportunity to join the creative writing club so they may express themselves on paper with pen, not on walls with colored sandstone and clay. The main purpose of the creative writing club is to present mate- rial for Bell ' s literary magazine, Idylls. We have seen both good and bad times during our school years; hopeful ly, this year will be long remembered as one of the best. The key to whatever success we have had this year has been involvement by you. For the record, we have had more people involved in more things at Bell High School than ever before. This is the bicentennial year. Let it be known loud and clear that Bell students love their country. That we are proud to be Americans, proud to wave our flag, and especially proud of our heritage. You only go around once in this life, so it is my hope that we can all enjoy our youth while we still have it and utilize the energy from it to better ourselves and our society. Remember, when we leave here, we can look back with pride at our High School years and say truthfully We went to the best school there is — L. D. Bell High School. The Raider, Bell High School ' s annual, has captured each moment of our ' 76-76 school year and bundled it in a package for us. Thirteen staff members try to recreate for the student body the tense Haltom football game that gave Bell a share of the Bi-District title, or that hilarious scene in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. It ' s all here; each emotion we have all felt and each event we have shared together. This has all been accomplished by hundreds of hours of unseen work hidden by the walls of the cluttered annual staff room. ABOVE LEFT: PHOTOGRAPHERS — Billy Richards and Nevin Gates. Ten regular issues of the Blueprint are published during the 1975-76 school year. Each one of these contain exciting and newsworthy articles of both fact and fiction, along with the Students ' own opinion on public mat- ters. At the same time, at the other end of the building, the library aides keep busy with their jobs. Among them are straightening shelves, checking in and out books, and keeping the ever-changing card catalog up to date. The nurses ' and counselors ' aides are people you don ' t see too often, unless you get sick or have a schedule problem. They are THESPIANS. BELL PLAYERS Makeup, lighting, blocking, casting . . . This is the side of produc- tion that you normally don ' t ever see or hear about. But it ' s all there, the hours of memorizing and rehearsing. Above are the peo- ple who make it happen. They go up or down with a show, but wouldn ' t give up a minute of it. They come out of one show and into the next, not even pausing to take a rest. So the next time you see a play, remember, it ' s more than just lines on paper, it ' s a story come to life. THE CORN IS GREEN The 1975 Fall Play was THE CORN IS GREEN. The show is set in a small mining village in the countryside of Wales. The story takes place around Miss Moffatt, who takes over an old home in the village. In her effort to start a school for the miners and town folk, she finds exceptional talent in one of the miners. Amidst several problems and conflicts, he goes on to win a scholarship to one of the top universities in the country. ' MANNEQUINS ' DEMISE ' MANNEQUINS ' DEMISE was the choice of the Drama 5 class for their assembly this past fall. Although the play had no real meaning, it left the audience with many different ideas about it. Focusing around four girls and their strange encoun- ters with the chorus of mannequins, the show utilized strobe and black lights to bring out added effects. A . Choir, Band, Speech, Drama and Art departments combined their talents to achieve the A- 1. musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Hard work and tense traumas added to the excitement of over 1 00 students who put their extra minutes in producing a smash hit. With- out the fine direction of Mr. Tom Dickson, Mrs. Helen McKenzie, Miss Teddye Brown, Mrs. Sandra Mohon and Mr. Roger Winslow, and the cooperation of the students, this theatrical creation wouldn ' t have been the success it was. Thank you! MOLLY BROWN — BIG HIT! COMBINA TION OF FINE ARTS BRINGS Shining stars, realistic, beautiful scenery and outstanding musical numbers bring forth this year ' s greatest hit, The Unsinka- ble Molly Brown. The setting is in Colo- rado and the story is of the high dreams of Miss Molly Tobin. With the determination of Molly and the assistance of her new husband Johnny Ledville Brown, Molly rises to acceptance in the rich, classy soci- ety of Denver. Angie Hodges played the title role. The enthusiasm and great sense of humor of Angie added comical situa- tions to the play. Bill Cole, with his grand singing ability, excellently portrayed the part of J. J. Brown. The theme I Ain ' t Down Yet dramatizes the importance of strength and happiness in succeeding in life. Bell began the 1975 Football season with a defensive starter and two offensive starters returning. We all knew it would take lots of dedication from the players and coaches for us to have a successful season. We also felt that our student body would have to show the support which would make each player know that repre- senting our school was important on Fri- day nights. Looking back on the season, it is obvious that our student body and faculty was very inspiring to our team in many games. I remember when we played Wichita Falls and Rider. Our students were more excited than theirs. That Haltom game was fantas- tic. L. D. Bell had many fine players in 1975; 22 fine seniors, 26 dedicated juniors, and 2 very tough sophomores made up the 50 man squad. We are very proud of the school we represent and the quality of young men who wear the Blue and White on the athletic field. Bill Davis Head Coach COACHES — FRONT ROW — Richard Dibble, Off. Bell dominated the first half but failed to score on their first penetration. Chaney scored the first TD ending a 76 yard drive on their second possession. The defense forced another punt which enabled the Raiders to drive in and score leaving Bell in front 14-0. Sher- man scored before the half ended and came back in the fourth quarter to score twice on a Raider fumble and interception leaving the Bearcats on top 21-14. RAIDERS 20 — ARLINGTON BOWIEO VOLUNTEERS SHUT OUT SECOND HALF Outstanding defensive play by the Raiders kept them in the game as the offense stalled on three scoring attempts in the first half. The defense held Bowie for only 1 16 total yards also scoreless. The Raiders managed to work out their early errors and came back the last half to leave Bowie down 20-0. Stacey Loftin scored twice and gained 139 yards on 21 carries. Mark Smith scored the other TD on a quarter- back sneak from the one yard line. FAR UPPER LEFT: Calloway sticks Bearcat. In a very even first half, Bell scored first, followed by the Rebels leaving the first half score tied 7-7. Bell marched 65 yards on their first possession of the Final half ending with a five yard dive play by Phil Chaney for the winning score. Cha- ney, the back bone of the Raider offense, rushed for 143 yards in 23 carries. John Kimbell and Tom Harvey made the clinch- ing tackle on a 4th and goal play smash- ing Richland ' s last effort on the three. The Raider offense then went to work to keep the ball in Rebel territory. BELL 39—CASTLEBERRY6 BACKUP UNITS HELP THRUST RAIDERS TO VICTORY Beginning to gain momentum since the start of the season, the Raiders won their 3rd straight victory against the Castleberry Lions in a 39-6 romp. An interception by Gary Haynes on the game ' s first play, set off a Raider barrage that left the Lions behind 30-0 before the end of the first half. Substitutes came on and finished the final two and a half quarters adding a touchdown, fieldgoal, and even a safety to the winning margin. Larry Wommack scored his second touchdown of the sea- son with a diving catch on a 32 yard pass. Henderson missed the PAT leav- ing Bell ahead 6-0. The lead was short lived as WF returned the kickoff 85 yards for a score. David Calvert broke through to block the extra point tying the score at 6 all. The Coyotes scored again 15 sec- onds before the half. Their two point con- version left Bell down 14-6. RAIDERS 36 — HIRSCHI 6 BELL TAKES FIRST HOMECOMING VICTORY IN SIX YEARS For the first time in six years, the L. D. Bell Blue Raiders won their Homecoming. Bom- bing the Huskies from the air ways, Smith connected with three touchdown passes. A 29 yard field goal by Mark Henderson put Bell ahead at the half 29-0. The Huskies passed their way to their only score of the game in the third quarter to make the score 29-6. Calloway set up the last touch- down by picking off his second pass of the game. Bryan Darden went over from the six yard line to make the final score 36-6. BELL 21 — RIDER 21 PENETRATION THE DECIDING FACTOR The Blue Raiders came from behind to tie the Rider Raiders, 21 -21 . Rider scored early to make the first quarter score 7-0. An interception in Bell territory set them up for their second score to make it 1 4-0, at the beginning of the second period. With five minutes left in the half, Loftin ran fif- teen yards for the first Blue Raider score. The extra point attempt hit the cros sbar to leave the score 1 4-6. The next drive went for 36 yards and a Smith score. Hender- son took the two point pass to tie the score 14-14 just before the half. An interception set Rider up for a score late in the third period to make the score 21-14. On the ensuing Blue Raider possession they drove 58 yards to the game tying points. RAIDERS 12 — MINERAL WELLS 3 FIFTH VICTORY BUILDS TOWARD DISTRICT SHOWDOWN The Raiders got off to a slow start but came back to defeat the M.W. Rams 1 2-3. Brilliant defensive play highlighted the game for Bell. Behind at the half 3-0, the Blue Raiders came out with more incentive in the third period. Bell ' s first score came on an intercepted pass. Ned Thurmond tip- ped a Ram pass and it was taken at the 40 yard line by Brad Mengwasser and returned for a touchdown. A bobbled snap left it a 6-3 game. After a fumble recovery at the Ram 1 1 , Henderson tacked on the second Raider score to make it 9-3. The last score was for the Raiders late in the third period. Mark Henderson booted another field goal to make the final score Bell 12 — Mineral Wells 3. BELL22 — HALTOM21 RAIDERS COME BACK SECOND HALF TO BLOW HALTOM OUT OF FIRST PLACE RAIDERS WIN THE BIG ONE Over 10,000 fans saw a showdown that will remain unmatched by any other such contest, either here or anywhere else. First place Haltom went into the fieldhouse with 21-7 lead, all but diminishing district hopes. Whatever had been said, either from Coach Davis or from their own con- science, the Raider team came back the second half playing as a team, playing sound football, and blowing Haltom off the field. Bell ' s defense smothered the Buffs the second half after being stood up by Haltom in the first. The Raiders scored quickly in the third period, narrowing the score to 21-14. The final five minutes was to prove the highlight as a comeback seemed to slip through after a Bell fumble at the Buff three. Bell forced a punt and returned in to score. Once again the chance was taken away as a deflected pass bounced off the ground into Haltom ' s hands. Haltom took control because no referees had been on the play. A fired up defense came onto the field as David Cal- vert smashed through and trapped Haltom for a safety. The Raiders took control and Smith threw three straight passes to Dane Phillips, Larry Wommack, and Chris Walsh taking the touchdown pass with 1 :39 left leaving Bell on top of Haltom 22-21 and on top of district 4A-6 as well. $? %,  l 185 FOOTBALL RAIDERS 20— TRINITY CO-DISTRICT TITLE SECURED IN SEASON FINALE UPPER RIGHT: Blakey. Even the heated hometown rivalry was not going to stand in the way of tak- ing what was rightfully ours, victory. Bell ' s explosive offense led by the driving force of linemen Steve Lewis, Brent Johnson, David Amyett, Jimmy Gowan, and David Schellhorn, captured control of a fired up Trojan defense to help give Bell 346 yards total offense and 20 points while the Raider defense held Trinity scoreless. Thank you for my high school education — something I can never lose. Thank you for the teachers who instructed me — people I will never forget. Thank you for the friends I ' ve made, and those extra special ones who helped me through the roughest of times. Thank you for that great band, those wonderful Raiderettes, and our never-say-die athletes. Thank you for the newspaper, the drama productions, and that Haltom football game we won by one point. Thank you for the clubs and organizations that worked so hard. Thank you for the Homecomings, the class councils, and the forever-dedicated Student Council. Thank you especially for the three annual staffs I have served on. They have been like big families with many brothers and sisters. And above all, L.D. Bell, thank you for the greatest yearbook spon- sor in the whole world — Carolyn Dean. wu Bob Harper 1976 RAIDER Editor , A S AUTOGRAPHS CO 0- J - to } ■?. ' .
