Bell High School Hurst, Bedford, Texas Volume XVI Editor Gale Cherry DEDICATION The Annual Staff of 1970-71 wishes to ac- knowledge the efforts of one person who has been most instrumental in the unification of the students of L. D. Bell High School. This person, an ever-present source of motivation, has had a never-ending faith in our Senior Class when the majority was not too enthus- iastic about our possibilities. Taking an opti- mistic view, he supported, pushed and prod- ded us, and, because of his efforts, it looks as if we ' ve finally come through. Because of the firm stands he ' s taken and the unwavering principles he has upheld, our school has remained a model to others by keeping the high standards that have so long been respected and admired. With this brief, but sincere expression of gratitude and love, we humbly honor and sa- lute Mr. A. J. Sales. This book is yours, and we thank you! 1 Mm .-i ; 1 ? Our individuality and will may turn the game in our favor For each of us can move by his own hand As will as Fate ' s. With determination, we set out to finish What has been left by our forerunners. Each move is watched by those who came before. To one outsider, it might be the school where a stu- dent walkout had occurred. To another casual observer, Bell might be considered just another institution of learning. To some students. Bell means one more step along the path to college; while for others, it is the end of formal education. All of these sentiments do not give a complete picture of our school. The memories of crowded halls, the teachers that have meant so much to us, the pep rallies, and the friends we all have made at Bell will stay with us for a long time. Our experiences in high school-both in and out of the classroom- were meant to teach us something about life and about our- selves. Now it is up to us to make use of what we have learned. As graduating seniors, we must make our places in society. As underclassmen, we must endeavor to make Bell all that it can be. I hope that your 1970-71 school year has been fruitful and that next year will be even better. TOP LEFT: Sponsors, Mrs. Lynn Eggers and Mr. Kenneth Potter. The victory ended a 13 game losing streal . Mike Young and Scott Hill turned in good nights offensively, as Young tallied 165 yards on 21 carries. He also opened the second half with a 67 yard touchdown run on the first play. The defense also put in a good game, as Mike Shearburn came up with two interceptions and key tackles were made by Bruce Cleveland and Steve Kunkle. One week later. Bell ' s luck still ran high. The Raiders beat cross-town rival, Haltom, 21-12. Penalties were numerous and the first quarter ended with no score. Haltom led 6-0 after a Raider drive fizzled out right before the half. The second half saw Bell ' s momentum increasing, as Mike Young scored from the 11 to start the Raiders on the road to victory. The Raiders went on to score by a five yard pass from Scott Hill to Kirk Graves, and the victory was a cherished one as it renewed an old tradi- tion. 180 TOP LEFT: Scott Hill. Both teams marched the length of the field with neither being able to score. Finally Richland was able to put the ball over and led at half 6-0. The second half saw a change in play by the Blue as they sco red on their second possession. On their next possession the Raiders went in to score again as the final score was 13-6 in favor of the Big Blue. The Big Blue opened district play with a heart-breaking loss to Sam Hous- ton. Scott Hill turned in a good offensive game by his rushing and passing. The first half ended in favor of Sam 10-7. The second half was a display of offensive skills by both teams. The lead changed hands many times and in the end it was in favor of Sam Houston, 31-30. 7776 Big Blue got back on their winning ways as they defeated Irving 20-12. The Raiders had to wait until the second quarter before they could get on the scoreboard. Twice during the second quarter the Raiders had the ball inside the ten, but couldn ' t put it over. Bruce Cleveland then recovered. a fumble in the end zone and the Raiders led 7-0. The Tigers came back and the score at half was 7-6. The second half opened with Irving scoring, but Bell bounced back with a 73 yard touchdown run by Mike Young. That ended the scoring with an- other victory for the Raiders. The Raiders dropped their third district game, as they were outnumbered in the Gopher Bowl. The Big Blue put out a superlative performance the first half and led 28-7. The second half showed an enthusiastic Gopher team as they came back to win 29-28. Once again Mike Young, Richard Floyd, and Scott Hill ran for large gains. The defense was led by Byron Huffstatler and David Milam. 184 TOP LEFT: Scott Hill. TOP MIDDLE: Roy Wearden. 185 TOP LEFT: Kirk Graves. MIDDLE TOP: Dickie Tongate. TOP RIGHT: Richard Floyd. BOTTOM RIGHT: Scott Hill, Charlie Gillis. Bell got back on the winning way by defeating MacArthur 7-3. Obviously the contest was a defensive battle as the Raiders had a tough time on the ground early in the game and had to go to the air. The Big Blue scored just before half and that was all they needed. Both sides were close in statistics, but Bell once again came out on top. Homecoming was a joyous occasion for all who were rooting for Bell this year. The Raiders literally trounced the Vikings from Nimitz, 67-7. Defensive standouts were Bobby Jones, Robert Konya, Chuck Carter and Mike Hudgins. They were able to produce 5 turnovers, 2 by fumble and 3 by interceptions. The scoring started early for Bell and at the end of the first quarter we were leading 18-0. The rapid pace kept up all through the game. Offensively the Raider charge was led by Pat Murphy, Harold Hill, Charlie Gillis, and Chuck Barley. 187 Bell traveled to Arlington for their next to the last game of the season against the 5th ranked Arlington Colts. The Blue Raiders came fired up and ready to play and proved they were the best of the two teams. Bell ' s defense was superb as they held the Colts to only one first down in the first quarter and no points the whole first half On the Raiders third possession they moved 59 yards in eight plays and tallied 7 points with 1:33 left in the first quarter. On their next possession the Big Blue traveled 80 yards to tally again, and ended the half with a 13-0 lead. The second half saw the Colts battling back and the re- ferees getting into the picture. Arlington fought back and penalties against Bell destroyed their bid for a victory. The final score was in favor of Arlington 14-13. TOP LEFT: Mike Young. BOTTOM MID- DLE: Scott HiM. BOTTOM RIGHT: Bobby McMullen. 190 Our first meeting witli arch-rival Trinity was successful. The Big Blue ended the season on a winning mark and supported an outstanding 7-3 season. The Raiders first scored with 5:36 left in the half and the defense took care of the rest. The points came on a pass from Scott Hill to Kirk Graves, who was safe in the end zone. In the second half Bell took over on their own 43 yard line and moved the distance in 13 plays. Floyd and Young ran for good yardage, with Floyd finally scoring on an 8 yard jaunt with 6:41 left in the third period. That was all the Raiders needed to end their season on a winning note, as the final score was 14-0 in favor of the Big Blue. 191 ? f t t f. t t V, f- f JUNIOR VARSITY AND B TEAMS STRIVE FOR PERFECTION 193 195 196 RAIDERS SEEK COMBINATION Bell Opponent 49 Irving 51 53 61 68 Mac Arthur 78 68 76 51 Trinity 55 59 57 50 Sam Houston 52 59 70 61 Nimitz 60 65 60 72 Arlington 73 61 62 66 Grand Prairie 78 61 68 197 Blue Raider round-ballers found the going tough this season against Irving and IVIacArthur. On all four games the Big Blue came out on the short end but was still in there giving it the true Raider hustle. The Irving series was close with the final game being won by Irving, 61-53. Standouts were Kirk Graves and Jim Beard. The MacArthur series saw the battles fought on the court as being even tougher than those of Irving. The score at the Cardinal ' s gym was 78-68 in favor of MacArthur. Good shooting was established by Seniors Bob Barnett and Bob Admire. 200 The series with cross-town rival. Trinity, ended in a split. But the final analysis was that Bell is still the better team. Trinity squeeked out a first half victory by a 55-51 score. The Raiders were high but it seemed as if the vic- tory just wasn ' t meant to be theirs. When the Big Blue played at home, the story seemed to be just the opposite. The lead changed hands a number of times but Bell fin- ally came out on top. The score ended up 59-57, as Finch and the Trojans were sufficiently trounced. Outstanding performers for Bell were Graves, Beard, Hill, and Cleve- land. 201 A first half victory against Nimitz was ctiall ed up by t ie Raiders at the team ' s second meeting. The victory came largely from free throw shooting as Bell connected on 23 of 25 attempts. The final score was 65-60, in favor of Bell. Once again the Sam Houston Texans proved to be too much for Bell. Both times they defeated the Big Blue, but not without knowing they had been in a contest. The second game saw Bob Admire, Bob Barnett and Scott Hill having hot hands, but the final score was 75-59 in favor of the Texans. 202 Bell took early leads but saw them dwindle away in both encounters with Grand Prairie. The first quarters were the Big Blue ' s best as the thirds seemed to be their downfall. Jim Beard had the hot hand with 20 points as Bell fell, 78-66. It was the same old story when Bell played Arling- ton in the first round. The Colts won, 73-72, on a last second shot. The season even ended on a sour note as Arlington once again came out on top of another squeeker. High point men were Scott Hill and Bob Admire. 205 JV GAINS CONFIDENCE 207 208 LD. We must admit that from the very first We have caught you at your absolute worst. But that, you see, was our desire- To catch the year in its entire. It may seem to you a bit bizarre But we like you just as you really are- Not all fixed, smiling and posed. But with your true personalities exposed. So for the seriousness and for the pranks We wish to express our sincere thanks. To Mrs. Dean: You ' re always full of sunshine And the Raider Staff thinks you are divine. Knowing that our problems will be annihilated And our very souls rejuvinated. We turn to you, Mrs. Dean When we know the truth must be seen. More than a sponsor you are to us We think you ' re really fabulousi And to my staff-it ' s been a blast But it seems the year has gone by so fast. I can ' t say deadline days were swell But you did your jobs quite well. Sure, I know there were often feelings of hate On THA T we did not hesitate. Now I don ' t want to put you in a daze But I feel it ' s high time you got some praise- My personal feeling is that you all really rate Because you ' ve been so fantastically GREAT! So I end this book in lyric rhyme In hope that you ' ll think it ' s really prime. Gale Cherry Raider, Editor
