ici lawrence d. hell high school hurst, euless, bedford, texas PRESENTS. . . iixt nii tt Volume XI 2 Co-Editors Judy Gilmore Janis Tice Building for a Better Bell Bell is a concentration of growing pains. A freshman comes as a child and is molded into an individual. Old concepts are discarded. New ones are erected. The finished product is much more than a graduate; the product is a person who is ready to give part of himself to life. Physically Bell must also experience growing pains. The old, the traditional must be replaced by that which will accommodate expanding needs. During 1965-1966, Bell has grown, and new buildings have arisen to meet the needs of modern education. Because we believe that the Raider helmet has always symbolized every part of Bell ' s school life, we have chosen this as our motif. The 1965-1966 RAIDER has attempted to reflect and present to you a picture of Bell ' s new face. Dedication.. . If the qualities of a true Raider could be named, among them would be: exceptional leadership, undying patriotism, love and respect for fellow man, patience, sense of humor, and understanding. In the five years that Mr. Jerrold Longwell has directed the band he has proven himself to be a true Raider. Possessing all of the above qualities, this exemplary man is admired by the entire student body. Few schools can boast of having such an inspiring man in their midst. We, the Raider staff, proudly dedicate the 1965-1966 RAIDER to our truest Raider example, Mr. Jerrold Longwell. In the light of these thoughts you may judge the leadership of the past year as you will. But, for the seniors who embark into a new lifeand the underclassmenwho must take the standard of Raider leadership from them, I should like in retrospect to mention the guidelines which History sets up for the judgement of any man or group of men. First, was he really a man of courage, with courage to hold off his associates, to withstand public pressure, and to deny private lusts? Second, was he really a man of judgement , with judgement enough to view the past and present objectively, to see the omissions of others AND himself, and to know and to admit that which he did not know? Third, was he really a man of integrity, a man who would turn neither on the principles in which he believed nor on the people who believed in him? i P! Lastly, was he really a man of dedication, with an honour ' %iP unblemished, compromised by none, and devoted solely to those who first trusted him? To those who do not or can not play the game, FOOTBALL is just a Sport, played for about three months during the vear When the Season is over . . . why. that is all till next year. It was fun while it lasted ! To a football player at Lawrence D. Bell High School. FOOTR M L ha? a completely different concept. It is a year round venture that takes most of a player ' s time and energy. The real work is not the three months it is played, but the nine months in preparation. These nine months include off-season training, spring training, individual workouts during the Summer, and summer workouts. Football, though, is not just work. The members of just like any- thing else. They learn to take the good and bad in stride. Losing seems a little less hard to bear when a player can share it with his teammates. Actually a football field is life on a smaller scale. This is where battles are won and lost. This too is where some of the leaders of tomorrow are molded. the fate of a nation. thev set. no matter how small, could affect Representing Bell High School on a football field is a privilege, and we are glad that Bell High has the type of boys that can measure up to it. This year, as in years past, our boys took time to stop and to thank God for allowing us to win, for allowing us to lose, and also allowing us to come back and make victory out of defeat. Football at Bell High School is not just a game. It is something to which men and boys alike can devote their time and energy, and it is something from which they get more than they could ever get in a classroom. FOOTBALL BELL TROUNCES JOHN TYLER, 2214 Robert Kidd crashes right guard for an eight yard gain. A stiff goal line defense stops Tyler at the one. In the first game of the 1965 season the L. D. Bell Blue Raiders showed a variety of offensive maneuvers plus their always stout defense. With a combined running and passing attack Bell notched 382 yards total offense while the Raider defense held Tyler to only 152 yards. The Raiders opened the scoring in the first quarter with a perfect 31 yard boot by Randy Henry which was good for three points. After the Tyler offense had been completely stalled by the Bell defensive 11, lightning struck again. This time it was a 43 yard touchdown pass from Dennis Fletcher to Daryl Dogget. The first half ended with Bell leading 9-0. No sooner had Bell kicked off in the second half till it had the ball again on an interception by Jerral Landers. This came to naught, however, as the Lions recovered a Bell fumble. Mixing their passing and running attacks, Tyler finally managed to find the end zone. Tyler Back John Harrison scampered 4 yards around end for the six point tally. A two point con- version made the score Bell 9, Tyler 8. The Raiders came right back and stampeded 63 yards in six plays. This was climaxed by Fullback Randy Beck ' s six yard plunge to paydirt. The extra point was good and the score stood 16-8, Bell ' s favor. After the Bell kickoff Tyler looked as if it was headed for another score, but a brilliant interception by Jerral Landers gave Bell the ball on the Tyler 31 yard line. Using their bruising ground game the Raiders battered the Tyler forward wall into submission as Randy Beck scored from inches to make the score 22-8, On the next series of downs Tyler was forced to punt, but the punt sailed through the arms of the Raider receiver and was recovered on the 18 yard line by a horde of Tyler Lions. Tyler madethe score 22-14. Bell then proceeded to eat up the clock with their running game. When the final gun sounded, the Raiders were encamped on the Tyler five yard line. The final score was Bell 22 - Tyler 14. RAIDER ROUNDUP Bell Tyler First Downs 16 7 Yards Rush. 206 57 Yards Pass. 176 95 Total Yards 382 152 Passing 6 of 14 9 of 18 Passes Int. BELL DOWNS DENISON, 13-7 In their home debut the Bell Blue Raiders KIDDED the Denison Yellowjackets by a score of 13-7. The KIDDING was done by number 40, Robert Kidd, who gained a total of 261 yards on 26 carries, an average of over 10 yards a carry. This was more than Denison ' s total offense, which was 190 yards. This was not the whole show, however. On the opening kickoff Jerral Landers brought the crowd to their feet with a spectacular return of 85 yards for the first touchdown. The extra point was no good, and Bell led with only 12 seconds gone from the clock. Denison drove the next kickoff back 68 yards for a touchdown! The score came on a 16 yard scamper by Buzz Beckelman, and the extra point was good. The score stood 7-6, in favor of Denison. Still in the first quarter Bell drove 68 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Kidd scored on a two yard plunge. Randy Henry booted the extra point, and the score stood 13-7, Bell ' s favor. The Raider ground attack gathered 356 yards. With the Denison 11 keying their defense tohim. Randy Beck gained only 52 yards. But they could not hold Kidd, who turned in runs of 63, 42, 30 and 21 yards. The rest of the game was a defensive standoff. As the final gun went off. Bell was on the 2 yard line of Denison, The final score was Bell 13, Denison 7. Landers sweeps left end for 10 yards and a first down. Beck smashes over guard down to the Yellow Jacket 11 yard line. This victory was even sweeter because it was the first conferencegameforthe Raiders. The opening kickoff looked like a replay of the Deni- son game. Jerral Landers took it and galloped 82 yards for atouchdown. A successful conversionmadethe score 7-0, Bell ' s favor. Jerral Landers carried the ball 20 times gaining 116 yards. He also scored in the fourth quarter on a 3 yard plunge. The rest of the scoring came on a 22 yard scamper by Robert Kidd, and a 5 yard carry by Randy Beck. Bell ' s total offensive output for the game was 294 yards. Three passes were attempted, but all fell incomplete. Castleberry ' s deepest penetration was to the Bell 5 yard line, but some fine defensive play by Jim Burns stopped them in their tracks. They never seriously threatened again. After four hard fought quarters the game ended with Bell on top 26-0. Jim Mumbo ' Green drops a Castleberry halfback for a yard loss. COYOTES FALL TO THE RAIDER OFFENSE, 3513 In the second game of the 1965 district season, the Bell Raiders romped over the Wichita Falls Coyotes 35-13. On the first play from scrimmage Jerral Landers took a pitchout from Randy Henry and raced 75 yards for a touchdown. The score stood 7-0. Holding the Coyotes on the next four plays, the Raiders got the ball and marched 61 yards in 15 plays. Randy Beck crashed over from the one yard line for the TD. This made the score 14-0, Bell ' s favor. On Bell ' s next series of downs, the Blue Raiders tnidged 91 yards down the field for another touch- down. Again Randy Beck scored the six points. This time he plowed 18 yards to pay dirt. The Coyotes came right back with a 61 yard drive climaxed by Price Daniel ' s one yard plunge for their first touchdown. The score was 21-7, Bell leading. The upset- minded Coyotes opened the 3rd quarter by moving 63 yards in 12 plays for the score. The 2 point attempt failed and Bell ' s lead was trimmed to 21-13. On the next score Bell drove from the Coyote 15 yard line to a TD in the end zone, Wichita Falls ' of course. The score was set up by Jerral Lander ' s 36 yard gain to the Coyote 10. Randy Beck drove over from the 10 in 3 plays. Bell wrapped up the game with a 65 yard drive featuring spectacular mnning by Daryl Doggett and Jerral Landers. The final ten yards was covered by Jerral Landers for the score. The final score was Bell 35, Wichita Falls 13. Landers finds the going mighty tough. The Bell Raiders played a terrible game on the statistic sheet, but as everybody knows it is the score that counts. Here the Raiders were superior in every way. It was a whale of a game, but for the fifth time in the young football season the Raiders came out on top. The final score was 26-18. This was due to the heads -up play of the Bell defensive team. Irving opened the scoring on a 52 yard run by Tiger Jim Bridges, pushing the score to 6-0, Irving ' s favor. The conversion failed. Bell came right back on the next series of downs. Randy Beck broke loose on the first play for a 75 yard touchdown run. The score stood 6-6. The second Raider score came on a 38 yard pass play from Randy Henry to Daryl Doggett, This came after a Tiger fumble, which was recovered by an alert Raider defense. The PAT was good and the score stood 13-6 in favor of the Bluemen. In the third quarter Raider Jim Burns pounced on a Tiger fumble on the Irving seven. Jerral Landers scored the touchdown on a sprint around end. This made the score 20-6, Bell leading. The ball changed hands twice before Irving scored on a two yard plunge. The conversion was broken up by Larry Reed. The score now stood 20-12. The next time Irving got the ball, it was on their own three yard line. The Bell defense held them for four plays and the Tigers were forced to punt. The punt was blocked by some alen defensive players, and Bell took over on the Irving four. From the four it took three carries to cross the goal line. THE PAT failed and the score stood 26-12. Irving came back and marched 80 yards. This was capped by a four yard run for the score, leaving the score 26-18. On the kickoff the Tigers pulled an onside kick and recovered at the midfield strip. On the first play Quarterback Marlyn LePori completed an 8 yard pass. On the next play Marlyn LePori threw another pass but BIG Bill Line intercepted and returned the ball 40 yards to put the game on ice. With this Bell won it s 5th game by a score of 26-18to remain undefeated. FrcxI Oawlord and Randy Heck lead inti-Tfcrrncc for Landers. BLUE RAIDERS DOWN HALTOM, 350 The L.D. Bell Blue Raiders proved that they -are truly champions by using a brutal ground attack to roll over the Haltom Buffaloes 35-0, The Raiders piled up 412 yards on the ground while limiting the Buffs to only 35. Contributing tothis grand total was: Jerral Landers with 121 yards, Randy Beck with 66 yards, Daryl Dogget with 54, and Roben Kidd with 36. Bell ' s forward wall, led by Don Dennis, Jim Burns, Jack Hemby, and Rusty Champeaux, repeatedly opened gaping holes in the Haltom line to let Bell ' s rampaging backs through. The first quaner was scoreless, but Bell struck for four touchdowns in four tries in the second. Beck scored first, scooting 25 yards for the score, only 23 seconds deep in the quarter. Five minutes later Kidd upped the score with a four -yard burst into pay dirt. At 9:33 left in the quarter Dogget plunged over from three yards out, and Landers chugged over just before intermission. Randy Henry booted the point after each touchdown, Bruce Goodman got the final score with a 7 -yard scamper midway in the third quarter, Henry converted making the score 35-0, Jerry Martin tries left end for six yards. Robert Kidd took the honors with an off tackle play from five yards out. Once again the Raider ' s picked off a Richland pass as Jerral Landers was finally floored at the Rebel ' s 49 yard line. Two running plays netted a total of 3 yards. Then Randy Henry connected on a 46 yard scoring pass to Landers. Richland then made its lone tally of the night. The score was set up by a 56 yard kick-off return by the Rebels Bobby Kugle, The Rebels stayed on the ground as they scored from the Blue Raider 30 yard line In five plays. Bell ' s fourth touchdown came after Kidd ran a kick- off back 33 yards to the Rebel 31. Kidd, Landers, and Beck alternated in running power plays. Kidd scored from the five with just over three minutes left in the first half. In the third period Richland kicked deep to Bell ' s five yard line. A couple of running plays netted eight yards to the 13. Then Beck rambled 54 yards to the Richland 33. Landers scooted around the end to the 27 on a six yard gain. Daryl Doggett then scored on a 27 yard reverse to end the scoring. All this time Henr) ' had been clicking on the extra points with five success- ful attempts. Although the Bell offense racked up 410 yards, the defense limited the Rebels to only 99 total yards and intercepted 5 passes giving the Blue Raiders excellent field position to score. This was the sixth victory of the year against no losses. Robert Kidd drives for a touchdown in the first quarter. BELL SQUEAKS PAST GOPHERS, 14-6 In one of the hardest fought games of the season. Bell lengthened its undefeated string to 8 by defeating the Grand Prairie Gophers 14-6, Bell ' s first score came on a 67 yard drive. On the first play Robert Kidd scampered 52 yards. Randy Beck then hit for 13 yards on three carries. Halfback Jerral Landers got the score on a three yard run. The PAT was good and the score, 7-0. The Gophers ' only score came on a 12 yard pass from Quarterback Gary Carter to End Johnny Simmons. The PAT was blocked by middlelinebackerDonDennis, leaving the score 7-6. The final score came on a 59 yard drive after a valiant defense which held the Gophers on fourth and one. During the drive Beck went on rampages against the Gopher defense, as the line tore gaping holes in the Gopher forward wall. Also the passing by Henry to Landers picked their secondary apart. After Landers ' final catch of the drive, Beck scored on two tries for the score. Henry ' s second PAT was good and the score stood 14-6. Bell ' s stout defense held again as the Gophers drove to the Bell 44, Gopher Quarterback Gary Carter dropped back and let loose a pass which was intercepted by Bell ' s Randy Beck. The L.D. Bell Blue Raiders ran out the clock and the final score stood 14-6, Bell winning another one! In the muddiest game of the season the L.D. Bell Blue Raiders defeated the Arlington Colts by a score of 22-6. This victory extended the Raider win streak to nine games. Bell ' s offensive power was slowed by the mud but their brilliant defense took up the slack. The defense took over the offensive chores and scored a touchdown and a safety on two great defensive plays. The Raiders first touchdown came on a recovery of a Colt fumble by Fred Crawford in the end zone for an automatic touchdown. The PAT failed and the score stood 6-0. The Big Blue ' s next touchdown came on another out - standing defensive play. The Arlington punter was tackled in the end zone before he could get the kick off. This gave Bell a safety and two points, leaving the score 8-0. Again Bell ' s defense set up the next score as Guard Mike Cope grabbed an attempted pitchoutbyArlington, this time on the Arlington 17 yard line. It took only two plays for the Raiders to hit pay dirt. On first down halfback Robert Kidd plunged for fouryards. Then Randy Beck broke for 13 yards and the touchdown. Henry booted the PAT and Bell led 15-0. Arlington came back and drove 70 yards in 6 plays. The PAT failed and Arlington trailed 15-6. The Raiders came back and drove 68 yards for a TD. This drive was led by Dar, ' l Doggett as he scooted for 20 yards, caught an eight yard pass for a first down, and picked up another first down on a 12 yard pass play from Henry. From there Beck smashed for 10 yards from the Arlington 12. Kidd crossed the double stripe for the score from 2 yards out. The PAT was good and the final score stood Bell 22 and Arlington 6, for another Raider victory. Don Dennis closes in on a helpless Colt. BELL ' S WINNING STREAK HALTED BY RIDER . 29-7 A tremendous crowd of 18,000 saw Bell ' s undefeated season wiped out by a strong Rider team ranked third in state. Although the two teams battled to a 7-7 tie at the end of the half, the Blue Raiders could neither move offensively or contain the Rider Raiders on the defense. Bell received the opening kick off and traveled in championship style 77 yards for the touchdown with Robert Kidd scoring from the 12 yard line. It was Kidd, Randy Beck, and Jerral Landers who did the damage as Rider was continually confused during the whole drive, Henry kicked the extra point and Bell led 7-0, Rider wasted no time in scoring and they too drove 77 yards for the touchdown. Rider moved again but their big offensive man. Bub Deerinwater, was injured as Jerral Landers tumed him inside -out with a twisting tackle. They drove to the 2 yard line of Bell but a bad snap from center and a 15 yard penalty stalled their attack. The half ended: Bell 7, Rider 7, Deerinwater left the game in the fourth quarter but of the first 25 plays in the second half Deerinwater carried on 21 of them. He went on to score three more times and scored 27 of the 29 points. However, Mr. Deerinwater wasn ' t feeling too well after the game and never ran a play in the game with Castleberry the following week. He was extremely slow in the bi- district perhaps from injuries suffered from Bell ' s defense in bruising tackles such as the one Landers made. On defense unassisted tackles- were not uncommon for Bell. Daryl Doggett had 14-. Don Dennis -10; Larry Reed -8; Bill Line-7 and 4 assists on important plays; Robert Kidd-6; and Rusty Champeaux-6,Thusthe game, a rough one, 29-7; and the season, a good one, 9-1, ended for Bell ' s Blue Raiders who really played like champions. The captains meet on the field before a game. 97 This year Bell High School was privileged to have one of its finest basketball teams in many years. There were no super- stars or consistently high scorers. No person was such a stand- out as to overshadow his teammates. What went out on the court before every game was just a good, well rounded team. Actually, the team by everything logical should have finished in the bottom half of the ladder. Because the team had been rated at the first of the season to finish near the bottom, not many of the students thought there was much of a chance for even a winning season. Things soon changed, however. Combining good basketball ability and most of all Desire, the team went on to take District, winning seventeen games while losing only one. There was nothing spectacular about the team, but they deserved to win. No basketball team at Bell High has ever played harder than these boys did. Two of the players, Milt Risenhoover and Donnie Berg, were named to the All District First Team, while Mike Shabay, Larry Overby, and Bill Line were given honorable mention. What looked like a mediocre year turned out to be a great success. Certainly most of the credit should go to Coach Nelson Moore. His superb coaching and split second thinking often turned near disaster into victory. Because of this and his fine leadership ability. Coach Moore was named District 4A-4 Coach of the year. Congratulations Coach Moore and team on a great year. 98 BASKETBALL PRESEASON Risenhoover gets a boost while he shoots. Who knows where the ball went? Two points for Larry Overby. Donnie Berg scores. ' Wild Bill Line chases a ileeing opponent. 100 BELL HALTS HALTOM 6461, 59-58 Two points for Donnie Berg. Mike Shabay scores on a lay up. Haltom, the pre-season district favorite, gave the Raiders something to remember in its two skirmishes with Bell. The first game was a nip and tuck battle all the way. Donnie Berg scored 19 points, Mike Shabay 14 points, and Charles Edgington scored 11 points in Bell ' s 64-61 win. At the Haltom gymnasium, the Raiders came very close to defeat. Behind 18 points in the third quarter. Bell looked doomed for destruction. Miraculously the Raiders came fro nn behind at the very last to win 59-58. Milt Risenhoover contributed 22 points and Donnie Berg scored 14 for the victors. Bill Line and Milt Risenhoover go up for a rebound. 101 BELL DOWNS WICHITA FALLS 67-50, 50-47 Bill Line stuffs it. Berg passes off to Risenhoaver under the basket. Led by Donnie Berg with 2 points, Milt Risenhoover with 19 points, and Bill Line with 12 points, the Raiders had no trouble with the Coyotes from Wichita Falls in the first conference ganae of the season. Wichita Falls fell by a score of 67- 50. In the second game again, Donnie Berg and Milt Risenhoover took scoring honors with 14 and 11 points respectively. Bell had relatively little trouble dropping the Coyotes 50-47. A hook shot by Overby scores two points. 102 RAIDERS DROP COLTS 39-37. 56-48 Charles Edgington has trouble getting a shot off. Jim Wallis shoots over a screen by Bobby Neal. Donnie Berg and Rooster Risenhoover, scoring 15 and 10 points respectively, were the main factors in Arlington ' s 39-37 loss to the Blue Raiders. Other scorers were Larry Overby with 6, Charles Edgington with 3, Mike Shabay with 2, and Bill Line with 3 points. In the second ganne, Berg and Risenhoover scored 12 points apiece but Larry Overby took scoring honors with 15 points. Risenhoover watches as Mike Shabay shoots. An outclassed MacArthur team was not nauch competition for the fighting Raiders. Donnie Berg led the attack with 17 points in Bell ' s 72-35 victory. The last encounter was more or less a repeat of the first. Milt Risenhoover was top point producer with 12 points as MacArthur went down 60-37. Berg lays it up for two points. 104 RAIDERS ROUT REBELS 81-59, 68-66 Brad Wieland scores on a long shot. Two Raider defenders double-team a Rebel player. An 81-59 victory was the result of Bell s first encounter with arch rival Richland. 26 points, scored by- Milt Risenhoover was tops while Donnie Berg had 18 and Bill Line had 8. The second game was a real thriller. The Raiders stole this one in the final seconds of the game. Scoring 20 and 2 1 points were Donnie Berg and Milt Risenhoover as the Raiders pulled it out of the fire 68-66. Risenhoover takes an easy two points. 105 BELL CRUSHES CASTLEBERRY 70-43, 44-29 Shabay scores on a nice lay up. Bill Line scores despite the efforts of two Castleberry defenders. Three men scored over 10 points as Bell crushed Castleberry 70-43, They were Donnie Berg, 17 points, Mike Shabay, 12 points, and Milt Risenhoover 12 points. At home, the Raiders gave a fine performance in their 44-29 victory. Donnie Berg had 17 points and Mike Shabay had 10 to lead the Raiders over the Lions. Berg screens out his man as Larry Overby scores. 106 RAIDERS SPLIT WITH GOPHERS 58-63, 49-47 This is called tickling your opponent. Bell controls a jump ball. Grand Prairie was the only team to blemish Bell ' s conference record. To make it worse, they did it in the Raider gym.. Donnie Berg con- tributed 19 points and Milt Risen- hoover 14 in the 63 -58 loss. This one was really a heart breaker. Avenging the earlier defeat at the hands of the Gophers, the Raiders came from behind in the second game to win 49-47. This was really a squeaker. Big Milt Risenhoover scored 21 points for the Raiders. Shots liKe this are hard to get, but Shabay makes it look easy. 107 RAIDERS RAID RIDER 67-53, 68-45 Mike Ireland and a Rider player battle for a j ump ball. Bobby Neal goes up for two. Rider did not have much of a chance against the superior Blue Raiders, Milt Risenhoover, Bill Line, and Mike Shabay got 21, 14, and 15 points respectively in the 67-53 Blue Raider victory. The second game was a repeat of the first as Bell won easily 68-45. Four players, Donnie Berg, Milt Risenhoover, Larry Overby, and Mike Shabay got 14 points each. By winning this game. Bell clinched the district title. Berg, Risenhoover, and Line bring down a rebound. 108 BELL STOPS IRVING 50-46, 77-66 Larry Overby drives for two points. Berg shoots as three Raiders look on. Combining a great team effort and superb coaching, Bell won by a close score of 50-46. Milt Risen- hoover had 20 points for the Raiders. The final game of the season was a real fine game with both teams playing good basketball. Bell proved to be the better team, though, by winning 77-66. Four players hit in the double figures. Donnie Berg had 22, Larry Overby 16, Milt Risenhoover 10, and Mike Shabay 13. Bell ' s district record at the end of the season was 17-1, very good for a team that was supposed to finish in the second division. ' This is yours, Mr. Longwell, from me, the band. You ask why? It is strange to me that you do not know, as YOU are the reason; but if you desire, I shall tell you. Do you renaember your talk to me the first day of summer rehearsals? I do, and I remember a certain air about you that put me at ease. I also remember the early Thursday morning rehearsals when I complained about lack of sleep. I guess I sort of forgot that you need the same annount of rest that I need, I also forgot that you got even less because you had to stay up late and plan nny show. I also rennember when you stood in the door of the bus at T. C.U. and read the judges comnnent sheets on the show to me. They were pretty good, weren ' t they? That smile on your face; did it mean that you were pleased with nne? I ' ll tell you something, Mr, Longwell - 1 was really pleased with you. In concert, the audience sees you as a nornaal back conducting a band, but I see you as a face manifesting a love and respect for music, with your every expression showing the changes of nnood in the melody. As I naarch, the audience can view you as a stern nnan carefully watching his band, but I see you as a critical yet connplimentary judge viewing the fruits of his life ' s education. This is why I give you this, and this is why you see nne with tears in my eyes as the year draws to a close, leaving nne with naennories of you, a Hustling Man. Being a part of a new and beautiful high school should indeed be considered a privilege for the freshman. To the freshman the high school years are exciting, fun-filled ones. Standing on the threshold of new adventures and new experiences, he must choose the path which he will follow. During these important years his future will be determined. Although the freshman has his own class activities, he also finds time for school activities. Taking part in most of the school ' s activities, the freshman shows as much Raider spirit as anyone. Being a victim of circumstance this year, the freshman had a few disappointments along with his good fortune. Sometimes feeling left out of upperclassmen ' s activities was the price that was occasionally paid. However, the thrill of being a genuine Blue Raider and being an important part of Bell was worth it. Dixie Day 222 Sophomore Class Favorites Steve Bass Elsie Scudieri 223 SOPHOMORE OFFICERS Pres. - Dan Roberson V. Pres. - Janie Wages Sec. - Elsie Scudier Treas. - Terri Folse 224 Rep. - Debbie Barron Sophomores 225 Class of 68 The Sophomore year at Bell High School is the com- mencement of all the thrilling experiences that will shape the future. As the beginning of a new period of learning, it will serve each student for the remainder of his life. It is a new world with stirring dreams for today and the foundation for hopes of their fulfillment in tomorrow. This first year is a year of change for the sophomore who leaves old relationships to build meaningful new ones. He leaves his child world to become an individual. It is these individuals who comprise what is known as the Sophomore Class. They must have the courage to see, to care, to act, and to change today to create a new tomorrow. When the nonsense and gaiety of being a sophomore is over it will be remembered as part of the person he has become. Some of our lighter moments were spent laughing with our sponsor, Mrs. Dean, who has been known to crawl under her desk upon spying a member of the i staff. Once she was seen chasing Jorg Caton ' s super-marble down the corridors during the lunch rush. It was finally trapped, however, in Mrs. Laxson ' s coffee. Why can ' t you just leave me alone? are typical, loving words of encourage - rnent. For all her concern, loyalty, enthusiasm, and sleepless nights, we are indebted to her. Many thanks to Mike Mangum, who, always saying, yes ma ' am, produced a superb adnnini strati on section. We will never forget the duscussion of Dixie Day ' s love life or David Biggerstaff ' s rubber band bomb. For their hard work we are grateful. At the first of second semester, we were glad to welconae Ada Gilmore, our nunnber one salesman, to the staff, because she could help us with drill team dances when she was not working on Who ' s Who. ' Our thanks go to Dee Peterson, who worked hard in spite of having a severe case of Hopkins Fever. ' , . The star of Little Egypt, Ben Admire, j d had to sit silently through all the girl ' s ♦ gossip sessions. We appreciate his assistance with drill team dances as well as with the sports section. ■ We are grateful to Tommy Tumlinson, who ranks high in experience in the dark room.. He - - holds the world ' s record for speed in drawing layout pages. We can never imagine how Jorg Caton proofread the pages while lying on top of the closets in the annual room! (Thanks, anyway.) We appreciate Mike McDaniel, who seemed to spend most of his time cracking Aggie jokes and Batman jokes. We were always amazed to see his sports pages ready for i line. However, we leave everything in the capable and dependable hands of Nancy Woodward, who once dropped a box of index cards after spending all night alphabetizing them, .-- ' ' ' ' The 1966 Raider staff has tried to capture the highlights of this year, but none of this could have been made possible without those who have given of themselves to assist us. We express our appreciation to the administration, faculty, and students for their cooperation. 333 334 335 336 337 338 339 340 _ X
