IN MEMORIAM ........ Peggy Rue Craft, who left us during her Freshman year, and Marie White, who passed away at the completion of her Junior ' ' deaths, have been with us ld but for their tragic our former class- year, wou , at our graduation. To the memory of these, mates, we dedicate this, the 1952 Law-Co-Hi . 0 if 7 ' ,W 1 1 1' ' 'J L -- 0' ...az 2 To the Seniors of Lawrence County High School Greetings: It has been truly said that to do something once is anaccomplishmcnt and to repeat it successfully isan achievement. For that reason the school is highly gratified at the appearance of this annual. This an- nual is synonymous of the splendid success which this year's class hasachieved. This is the school's oppor- tunity to send forth another review in picture and story of a year's work and play of the Lawrence County High School. The spirit of vigor and vitality has been demonstrated in many ways by this class. This annual is only one of its many fine accomplish- TIICHIS. Your conduct has been on a high level. I am more convinced than ever that you want the best for yourselves and for the future students who will en- roll in your Alma Mater. To have and to appreciate superior things, one must be superior in ideals and character. Your opportunities are limited only by your determination and your preparation. The world needs strong mass leadership if civilization moves onward and upward. There is no place for weaklings in our social order of today and tomorrow, You have the ability and determination to supply that leader- ship which society now so sorely needs. My prayers and good wishes will attend your under- takings if they are clothed in honesty, truth and wis- dom. Sincerely, Z 7 'A 1 1 , ' yy il , 'Vs , . Mr. E, O, Coffman, Principal A,B,. Harris Diamonds in the Hough On August 16, 1948, two hundred sixty-two green, trembling freshmen with knocking knees and thumping hearts entered the austere portals of L. C. H, S. for the first time. All were diamonds in the rough, sadly in need of a good polish job from the adept hands of the Law-Co-Hi faculty. At a noisy class meeting held soon after school opened, Inez Sandusky was elected president, Tommy Downey, vice-presidentg George Lanning. secre- tary-treasurerg and Misses Annie Mary Springer and Fran- ces Smallwood, sponsors. Nothing of importance occurred that year, though many of us did, during the first quarter. purchase study hall seats at exorbitant prices from certain high-pressured, slick-tongued senior salesmen -- in spite of warning from the principal, Mr. Coffman, that the study hall was not owned by the seniors and consequently was not theirs to sell or rent at any price! There were only two hundred one of us at the beginning of our sophomore year, sixty-one having fallen by the wayside because of grades, love, work, and other reasons. Some rough edges were gone and we were beginning to showdefinite signs of possessing intellects. All of us were resigned to the fact that it was almost useless to try to play hookey. Some of us had learned the hard way -- by experience -- that Mr. Coffman possessed an all seeing eye and knew what mischief freshmen were planning even before they didl Our sophomore officers were Charles McCrory, president, Billy Joe Graves. vice-presi- dentg Martha Scoggin. secretary-treasurerg our sponsors were Mr. Beard and Mr. Frazier. As juniors, we returned in 1950, with a class of one hundred eighty. Our officers were Charles McCrory, presidentg Margaret Martin, vice-president, Tyson Robert- son, secretary-treasurerg our sponsors were Mrs. Kirkland and Mr.Crews. As is customary, we published the Wild- cat , from which we realized a profit of iB140,78. We gave the senior class S100 toward the expenses of their trip to Memphis, at the end of the year we enjoyed a recreational patty at Fairview Park. After all expenses had been paid, we had 5513.32 to start our senior year. Somewhat polished and beginning to gleam with knowledge, one hundred fifty-four of the original class returned as seniors in July, 1951. Our officers were Bobby Brewer, presidentgGene Rayfield, vice-presidentg Cecilia Evers, secretary, J. B. Perry, treasurerg our sponsors were Miss Helton, Mr. Henson, and Miss Old. In order to finance our class project -- the purchase and installation of the backboards in the new gymnasium ata cost of approximately S3600 -- we worked tirelessly throughout the year. The gross sales of the annual mag- azine drive topped those of all previous classes and we netted about S1100 from the sale. The Tennessee Team, led by Miss Old, edged out the Vanderbilt Team by a few dollars. Funds derived from the sale of food at foot- ball games, at basketball games, and at the District and RegionalTournamentsheld in our gym, helped us to rea- lize our projected goal, Not the least of our labors during our senior year was the publication of the 1952 Law-Co-Hi , not only was it the largest L. C, H, S,annual to date, but more copies of it were sold than of any previous edition. Gur class had the distinction of conducting the first assembly of the whole school in the new gym at the sixth period on Tuesday, January 15, just before the dedication of the building that night. We also helped brake in the stage of the new building, presenting several plays in the spring. The final grinding and polishing processes were ad- ministered to us during the last week in April -f exams -- but all this was past and forgotten when we marched by and received our diplomas! We were at last really polished and glowing with our newly acquired dignity as graduates of L. C, H. S,! 1 Y N.-.,.,,,. v A 1 0 if f I 9 1 Q x 'f-1. .' It regrets that ,lack's and loe's pictures were reversed, that Richard's name was misspelled, that the names of the Most Popular and Most Athletic Seniors were reversed, and that the United Nations emblem was printed upside down. Say, did you see Mr. Coffman's eyes shining when the student body presented him with his table radio as a parting gift? And did you see him proudly telling time by the watch the faculty gave him? ln be- half ofthe student body, the Law-Co-Hi ' Staff bids Mr. Coffman Good-bye and wishes him Good Luck in his new position. 1- -.... , i.,i- 1- 17-1-ml-1 t rm-117-1q...1l1 1 ' www- A 4. . .... The coaches were favorably impressed by the showing made in two practice games. r- mv- . fl-.-.lf 1-ua, -11- 1.k.sa -mff..1rt.w-a Q f fu-at 5 fad Row 1: Brown, Bishop, Burks,Flippo, McDonald, Brewer, Boyd, Thompson, Peppers, Ridgeway. Two players received honors from the Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club: Bobby Brewer received a trophy as the team's most valuable player and Carlton Rochell received one as the team's most outstanding blocker. One disappointment of the season was the post- ponement, due to bad weather, of the Springfield game, to which everyone had been looking forward. The climax of the season was the half-time cere- mony at the Thanksgiving Game with Pulaski, when Miss Charline Durham was crowned 1951 Football Queen, Her attendants were Misses Loice Kerstein, Nell Hand, Doris Daniels, Patsy Jenkins, and Janice Smotherman, uf -.. x, ,I - D r' nd A' ' a l If 1' . ,xii ' f' ' YK5 S' ,J .t....,l , N ,, r.,,. . Pvsppcrs us Nix, Sunny Duke, Rufus, ard, Tummy Brown, Nml 1952 Basketball At a point well past the middle of the season, the records of games won and lost by both teams are not very impressive, but these records do not tell the com- plete story. For the first seven games, excluding the Alumni game, the teams played away from homeg both teams showed improvement after they began playing more home games. L,C,H.S, closed the interscholastic basketball season by playing host to both the Twenty-First District and the Sixth Regional Tournaments, A class tournament for both girls and boys, in which the varsity players assisted, followed the close of the regular season. GIRLS' As the playing season started, Corrine Johnston, dependable guard, was elected captain. Playing at forward were Jane A1ford,Jo Ann Hyde and Nancy Lan- ning, with Nancy Patton's name appearing in the lineup several times: other forwards were JuanellBehe1 and Joyce Jones. Playing guard were Captain Johnston, Jane Simms, and Joyce Martin, Kay Horton, Martha Marston, and Alajean Nailer were always ready to go in and do a good job, A loss to Summertown started the season, but the second encounter with the Summertown girls proved to be one of the most exciting Law-Co-Hi games. At the dedication of the gym on January 16, the local girls took a lead in the first few minutes and held it all the way, although the score was close enough to make it interesting. Another very exciting game was the second game with Pulaski, the Bobcats having previously wonover the Lawrenceburg girls by twelve points. The only time Lawrenceburg was not ahead was at the end of the first quarter when Pulaski led 7-1. From then on Law- renceburg pulled ahead and stayed ahead about two points for the remainder of the game. Some other ex- citing games were the Blanche, Fayetteville, Murfrees- boro, Mt. Pleasant, and Hohenwald games. The Law-Co -Hi girls enjoyed a better than average season and anticipated a good season next year, since only two players were to be lost from the squad by graduation. The school was honored to have two of the district's top scorers in Jane Alford and Jo Ann Hyde. BOYS' Under the capable direction of Coach Staggs, the season got under way with the selection of Charles Boyd as captain and George Lanning as altemate cap- tain. Soon George was forced to quit playing because of injury sustained earlier in football. With Sonny McCrory, Sonny Stotser, and Hollis Peppers at forward, with Charles Boyd, Tyson Robertson, and Sonny Duke at guard, and with Jerry Thompson at center, the team improved as the season progressed. Some of the substitutes who were often given an oppor- tunity to show their ability were Tommy Brown, Rufus Clifford, Randall Kennedy, and Grimes Nix. Unfortunately, the Wildcats' first game resulted in defeat at the hands of the strong Summertown team. Although they lost a number of their earlier encounters, some by small margins, they won more and more games as time passed, so that prospects began to look fine for the tournament. Jerry Thompson and Sonny McCrory were among the top scorers for the district. The boys' B-Team was more than usually active this year, under the direction of Coach Smotherman, These boys piled up an impressive number of victories, re- ceiving experience which seemed sure to prove valuable to future Law-Co-Hi varsity squads, BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Girls Boys LCHS Opponent LCHS 39 47 Summertown 61 40 74 22 Bodenham 36 61 26 40 Pulaski 46 45 49 34 Hohenwald 38 46 30 ll Alumni 49 27 44 34 Blanche 38 37 44 59 Fayetteville 39 ' 34 41 46 Collinwood 38 50 43 30 Summertown 45 34 54 39 Columbia 37 25 Girls Boys LC HS 0PP0nent LC HS 52 22 Lewisburg 37 65 35 33 Pulaski 56 50 64 69 Murfreesboro 53 58 '7 3 75 Mt.
