'I2 Lawrence Central wou I d have trouble functioning properly without the assistance of five dedicated women who serve as the office adminis- tration. One could find them anytimeofthe day busily buried beneath a sea of passes, com- plaints, excuses, and uncount- ablemiscellaneous paper work. Every day they proved to be indispensable as they served as the students' and facuIty's friends as well as assistants. Although theyseldom receive a thank you or even a compli- ment, their assistance is greatly appreciated. This year marks the termination of the career of Mr. Walter Davis that began in 1911 in a one room school house. Mr. Davis, beloved industrial arts teacher at LCHS, has served both the school and the com- munity well. To Mr. Davis, who has taught so much to so many, and is now retiring, LC expresses its grat- itude and say, Thanks Teachers are not just people earning a living, they are architects of our future in a land of freedom and opportunity. -Ivey F. Lewis Many though the scholastic and athletic honors that LC students attain may be, it should be realized that without the faculty of Lawrence Central to instruct Centralites, these numerous achievements would be gained. Lawrence Central is indeed fortunate in the respect that its faculty is composed of teachers who are dedicated to teaching. These instructors, sixty in number, are not at LC for the sole purpose of teaching however, for they are also the students' advisors, their club sponsors, and their friends. The knowledge they impart to LC students cannot be measured by a yardstick or scales for their wisdom will linger in the minds and hearts of Centralites as long as memories of friends and school remain, perhaps, forever. JANICE JOHNSON Arithmetic MRS, MARILYN LANE Reading 19 Still ending and beginning still -Cowper The Senior Class of l96O can look back on five years filled with many changes and additions here at Lawrence. Entering as eighth graders in the newly finished Junior High Building, the class has felt the effects of 'growing pains' as it grew by leaps and bounds. At last graduation day is drawing near, and the proud seniors must discard their beloved senior cords for the more conventional dress of adults as they accept their various roles in society. For some, college and the promise of more years of carefree happy abandon lie ahead. Others will leave the hallowed halls of Lawrence to exchange their caps and gowns for positions in business, indust-ry, and ad- ministration. The seniors are saddened to leave this place where they have known so much happiness, but, alas, the time has come to make way for tomorrow. The whole world is at their feet-waiting. President DAVE ROBERTS DAVE KIRKMAN Two respected members of the IC faculty, Mrs. Lester Craig and Mr. Ben Sprinkle, served as senior class sponsors this year. These men cer- tainlyhelped to make the seniors' last year at LCHS a pleasant and profitable one. is 1 Secretary ii i RAMONA MILLSPAUGH wk it MR , LESTER CRAIG SENIOR CLA SS SPONSORS Treasurer MR. Representing the Junior Class of Lawrence Central on the Student Council this year were: Rick Rudy, Sue Rossell, Ron Duch, Martha Morse, Jim McConnell, and Sharon Manwaring. UNICRS Youth is all the glad season of life, but often only by what it hopes, not by what it attains or what it escaped. -Carlyle With the privilege of becoming upperclassmen, the iunior class was both pleased and alarmed with the many new re- sponsibilities and opportunities granted this year. Each year at LC gives one a louder voice concerning school policy than the year preceding, but the juniors also found this a year in which the school work became stiffer, assignments longer, and satisfactory grades more difficult to attain. But this ambitious group welcomed new challenges. For the first time since coming to Lawrence Central, the class had officers to represent it. Moreover, underclassmen looked up to the juniors because they had joined the ranks of the leaders. Juniors were leaders in clubs and members of all sports teams. They brought honors to the school and their class by serving in practically every phase of school life, and they have reason to well remember this busy but happy year. 42 Mr. Joe Parker Mr. Russell Gladden John Adams Bob Allen Nancy Allen lo Anne Arthur Karen Babcock Frank Banning Patricia Bays Diane Barnett Sally Bennett Bob Bereman Carol Blacketer Barbara Blount Jane Bogard John Bond Patty Bowman Rick Brawner James Bray Bob Bredensteiner Roy Bredensteirner Rebecca Brimer Janet Brown Karen Brown Kathy Bultman Raeanna Burgdorf Lynn Burnakam Pat Burns Gloria Caldwell Judy Campbell Lillian Canter Sharon Caplinger Pat Cassidy Beric Christiansen Bob Clark Jerry Clark Gary Cole Kelly Combs Don Conner Richard Cook Johnny Cooper Wanda Coval Betty Crooke Tom Dabbs Alicia Daugherty Gary Dean Jerry Dudderar Ron Duch Kenny Eaken Sally Edwards I .- J ay, H+, -as .- 1- i 'i fn' me f --tw it J r ' ' ' : ' 7Si'-SW A J it 31+ S Eff Q A :fs - r f , .. Seventh and eighth grade boys were offered sports to use up both excess time and energy, and junior high cheerleaders were kept busy leading yells for their teams . During '59-'60, there was an increase in the amount of 7th and 8th grade names on the honor roll with each new grading period, a fact that attributes their earnest study. And, several LC Jr. I-lighers also served their classes as homeroom representatives. Students from these grades were entered in the vaude- ville show, and were members of the pep club. They expressedthemselves in both music and art. Eight grade pupils had the opportunity of singing in the mixed 8th grade glee club, and students from both classes were giv- enachance to let their creative powers take hold in the art room. ln fact, these young people took an active interest in all the opportunities offered to them and proved to be valuable to the school in the years, T959-60. at .TQ ,ll ROW ONE: Philip McCarty, Linda Thompson, Connie Duncan, Dougles McClean, Judee Schwendermann, Mike- Price, Barry Gangi, John Beaver J-r. , Janic Miller, Crystal Strother. LASSES Nuo-' Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much, Wisdom is humble thatghe knows no more. -Cowper Of course, the main purpose of LCHS is to educate the students enrolled as thoroughly as possible and to prepare them tor the world awaiting. The school 's curriculum includes a variety of subiects. Through these many phases of school sources, LC attempts to develop the many individual aptitudes ofthe pupils, ancl to seek out and nourish hidden talents in science, math, foreign language, cooking, shop, or agriculture. Basic artistic and personality traits are all considered at Lawrence in order to properly prepare Centralites for the world. 76 1 'l Boys' Gym The boys seem to have let things pile up in this physical education class. Not to be out- done by the girls' new gym, the boys took over the original one in 1959-60, even though some sports teams still held practice sessions there. Girls' Gym These LCHS girls seem to be learning the ropes as they participate in one of the schools numerous physical education classes Girls' phys. ed. classes were all held in the spac- ious new girls' gymnasium for the first time this year A required course for both boys and girls before graduation, this class helps to build healthy bodies while the rest of the school builds healthy minds. Some of LC 's journal- ists take advantage of class time to discuss news articles and proofread copy while trying to meet a Cub Reporter dead- line. FRENCH Miss Lois Guertin seems to be pleased with the pupils of her French class. Students in first year French concentrate on the pronunciation, the practical use of, and the language itself. LATIN Who said Latin is a dead language? Mrs Hurt and her Latin pupils certainly do not seem to think so. Starting out in Latin, pupils are naturally taught the basis of the language vocabulary and grammar. They also study phases of the Roman way of life and its influence 'on modern culture and civilization. ffl yy X x ,s 4514.9 ,HM toss? ' iii-K 6 ?' X rim- xx. World Hisfory Visible in the background of this world history class is a uiap of the world, the history of which is taught to LC students by Mr. Russell Gladden. Through Mr. Glgidden Centralites taking this elective course are given a view of the ancient peoples and the contributions they made to modern civilizaf tions. Social Problems LC seniors learn to analyze the problems of society, under the guidance of Mr. Ben Sprinkle, social problems teacher. This class is required before graduation. Physics Such subjects as math and mechanics, force and motion power, energy, and work are all involved in the science of physics. Mr. Ernest Harris, instructor of the industrious class shown here has taught them a great deal about work. Chemistry Chemistry students shown at the right seem to be in the middle of some important scientific fact. Understanding the environment, the method of science, and the application of chemistry to the life activities of the average citizen are important aims-of this course. Zoology Mr. Aubrey Hinds, Zoology teacher, explains the different parts of a crayfish to two of his interested zoo students. In this class attention is directed to classification, disease, and to experimental work in general biological fields such as behavior, nutrition, and evolution. Home Economics Typing Shown here are industrious beginning typing students. In first year typing, skill building is 'stressed along with some application of personal use and an introduction to business. Home Economics students receive some extra instruct- ion front their teacher, Miss Schulnnacher. In this class girls learn good grooming, how to distinquish quality fabrics and weaves, how to select clothes, and of course, how to make their own clothes. Boys are taught the proper use of tools, methods of assembly and information concerning thier materials. Projects are also required involving the fundamental processes of each division. 'Sw General Math Open books seem to indicate that these general math students are busily applying themselves to their work. Taught by Mr. Oran Weaver, this sub- ject's aims are to see that the student understands and is interested by math. It also sees that the material studied is socially useful. Q., College Math Mrs. Margaret Rush, LC math teacher, holds the college math class' attention as she explains a difficult problem to them. This course, designed for prospective college students, must be preceeded by algebra Qregular and advancedy and geometry, and includes an introduction to higher mathematics such as analytics and calculus. Besides showing a score any team could be proud of in the many meets in which they participated, these mighty Bears also made quite a name for themselves as they swept four of the first tive places to win this year's Capital District Cross Country Meet. Under the able direction of Coach Joe Parker, the Lawrence Central cross country team proved one thing --- they can run faster than any other team in the county. WRESTLING Of the many sports offered at Lawrence Central, wrestling is one the most individual. This sport not only offers team competition, but also give its members a chance to pit their strength against others of their age and weig t. This year the LC rapplers suffered a slight weiggt handicap, but this didn't hinder them as they walked away with the Capital District Conference Title. The Lawrence wrestlers did a splendid job, winning a large per- centage of all their meets.
