PM Lawn Texas May 21 1969 Dear Herkrmer Frfteen years after I graduated from hrgh school I was rtding my rarlroad through West Texas I happened to pass through the largest crty tn West Texas Lawn It was there I recerved my educatron and early trarrung tn lrfe I stopped tn at the world famous Shack for a cup of coffee and noticed a couple seated toward the back who looked famtlrar Lo and behold' It was Rev and Mrs Charlre Warford 1 the former Patsy Rountree Q We began to talk about old school days and they told me about all of our old classmates Frrst was James C Grant who had marrred and settled down after lus college and pro football career He 1S now Patsy s brother in law He IS thmkmg senously of takrng the coaclung Job at Lawn College whlch ts newly opened An ambulance came screechrng by and that remrnded Patsy that Gay Nell Noms IS head nurse at the newly constructed Arr Base Hosprtal on the outskxrts of town She also sard that Mrs Betty Landers had put rn for a state franchrse in the telephone bustness Charlre butted rn to say that her husband Berrue Landers rs prestdent of the Landers Used Car Corporation They told me Peggy IS lrvrng tn a twenty seven room mansron out tn Hill Crest addrtron Her husband rs now freld superrntendent of the new Independent O11 Company From the Poster on the wall I recogmzed another old school mate Bennte Aldndge the Senator Elect from tlus Congresstonal Dtstnct She IS seekrng re electron for the third strarght ume I looked over across the skyscrapers and on the tallest one was a srgn Potter Arrlrnes for the Rrde of Your Lrfe I was glad to see Doyce make good Two of our old buddtes are out of town James Copeland proprietor of the Rockrng C Ranch out rn New Mexrco has taken a wrfe and settled down to some frne lrvmg Sonny Q L D j Dtck rs rn Austrn wmrung the Class AAAA football champtonshrp for I-lrll Crest Hrgh School Q Lawn y What a thnll rt ts to hear of and see my old classmates agam I guess I had better go as I hear the Satterwhrte Specral whrstlrng tnto the Lawn Central Statron Respectfully yours Satterwhrte and Sons Rarlway R C Satterwlute Presrdent 1 1 r v . . wt' Around the first of September 1942 a shrp containing 27 members of what rs now the graduating class of Lawn Hrgh set sa1l for ports unknown Those who were srgned on for that fateful cruise are as follows Merle Tootsie Casper Melba Hereman La Verne Knrght Gay Nell Norns Georgeann Parrrs Sally Tyree Joyce Thetford Betty Jeanwrrght Marqurta Martin Hazel Odessa Barnes Gerldean Barnes James Copeland L D Sonny Dick James Coy Grant Henry Mrller Howard May Gerald Meeks Bobby Charles Satter white Joe Doyle Wrtght Donald Ray Jones E K Music Eddre Person Chester Music Charles Warford James O Donald Barnes Vemon Lee Barnes Of those who rode water hrgh and low but stayed on the slup are Gay Nell Noms James Grant James Copeland Sonny Drck Charles Warford Midway rn the fust voyage Bennre Aldrrdge got on board from Goldsboro to contmue the voyage Tootsie Casper Eddie Person Georgeann Parns Howard May left the boat for parts unknown at the end of the frrst voyage on open sea Bobby Satterwhrte and Donald Jones and Sally Tyree left at mrd way pornt of the second crurse to go to Ovalo At thrs point Betty Tumer came on board she rs strll a member The shxp traveled at a raprd pace wrth few hardshrps and a lot of wmd but one by one the crew members erther grew srck or took leave The Barnes farmly moved to Wxnters Betty Wrrght to Abrlene Joe Wrrght to Pecos Gerald Meeks to Mrdland A few were srgned on but only for a brref moment Doyce Potter Charles Perry Barbara Fowler Doyle Johnson Bobby Adams Garland Hawkrns Brll Shores Mrtchell P e Ivan Hue Lowrey Dorothy Jean Pearson and Glenda Beth Welch have amo others had the drstmction of servrng on board Bobby Satterwhrte reJomed the crew at the end of the seventh year to captain the crew at nmes wrth expert helmsmanshrp Patsy Roundtree srgned on at the begmrung of the tenth voyage she also remained w1t.h the old and creaky ship unttl the home stretch Peggy Weeks who left the 53 class to become Mrs John Green and to Jorn the 54 class IS also aboard this last voyage On September 1 1953 the shrp that sarled wrth 27 members only 12 years ago set sa1l thrs trme wrth only 12 of wluch two have left La Verne Kmght to become Mrs Mance Mrtchell and Doyce Potter because of bad health To our great happrnes Doyce came back ir1 trme to frmsh wrth us We hope that rn years to come people wrll thmk of that ship wrth fond dreams and pleasant memones r v I U .
