— After eleven years in the La verne system. Mrs. Mattie Smith retired from teaching last spring. When the last history test was handed out and the last grade was recorded, Mrs. Smith remembered the many students who complained about her difficult tests. She then smiled as she also remembered those who returned during their first year of college and thanked her for teaching them to think through a test. Mrs. Smith came to Laverne in 1960 as head of the English department from Jenn- ings. Later she taught American History, speech, and social studies as well as direct- ing the junior and senior plays for several years. I enjoy reading, sewing, and collecting grandchildren, ” she said when asked what she would do with her spare time. I also plan to travel to Houston, South Carolina, and North Dakota among other places. Mrs. Smith earned her Bachelor's Degree at Oklahoma A and M College, Stillwater, and her Master's at Northwestern State College, Alva. The field of education will miss her devotion and her sincere interest in her students.
