Good times should be made Co last, Haste, that notorious enemy of memories, turns awareness into forgetfulness. And, momentous experiences are over almost Lx;fore they've begun, Fun times, unique times unless they achieve immortality rbooks can make t: e stand still Mr. Harry Shackelford has been a vital part of the community since 1947. The Laverne School, suf- fering from a war shortage of faculty and learning materials, responded to his firm, practical leader- ship. Highly respected in his field, he was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Bellmon in 1963. He is also a member of the State Vocational Board of Education. Other public offices held by him were Superintendent of Delaware County for 4 years and state representative 1939-43. Mr. Shackelford graduated from John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Ark., in 1929 with majors in English and social studies. He earned his master's degree from Phillips University in 1951. Classroom teaching experience was earned in the Kansas, Buffalo, and Tulsa schools. Mr. Shackelford will continue his role in education as financial advisor of LHS. S ac eCfry%d — Dedicated To the Tiger Staff, the sponsor Mrs. Bockelman, the students, faculty, and patrons of the Laverne School District: This is my last time to address you as the superintendent of the Laverne School. I have filled the position for twenty-one years and have seen many improvements during these happy years. The school enrollment has grown from approximately three hundred fifty with a faculty of seventeen to seven hundred and a faculty of forty. The school curriculum has been broadened until we are now accredited by the North Central Crediting Association. Fifty-eight units of instruction are abso offered. It is with joy that I relinquish the job of superintendent to Mr. Jayroe as of July 1, 1971. I wish for him, those of you remaining, and for the boys and girls who will walk rhe.se halls in the years to come, a glorious future. Sincerely, 2 One of Mr. Shackelford’s greatest dreams for LHS came true when construction on Shackelford Hall was begun in the fall of 1970. The auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000 features a new band room, air conditioning and theater seats. At the building site. — After eleven years in the La verne system. Mrs. Mattie Smith retired from teaching last spring. When the last history test was handed out and the last grade was recorded, Mrs. Smith remembered the many students who complained about her difficult tests. She then smiled as she also remembered those who returned during their first year of college and thanked her for teaching them to think through a test. Mrs. Smith came to Laverne in 1960 as head of the English department from Jenn- ings. Later she taught American History, speech, and social studies as well as direct- ing the junior and senior plays for several years. I enjoy reading, sewing, and collecting grandchildren, ” she said when asked what she would do with her spare time. I also plan to travel to Houston, South Carolina, and North Dakota among other places. Mrs. Smith earned her Bachelor's Degree at Oklahoma A and M College, Stillwater, and her Master's at Northwestern State College, Alva. The field of education will miss her devotion and her sincere interest in her students. rfcUHUti t'iatiM' Congratulations to the sponsors, staff, and students of Laverne School of 1971. We hope this annual will ever be a reminder of a job well done. As you go through the pages of time, may your school days here at Laverne be an inspiration to press on to higher and better things, to always be sincere, honest, and truthful in all your dealings with your fellow man. We soon adjusted to each other and we were on our way. We began with marching season in the fall. We were small in number for a marching band, but we had the spirit and we made up for what we didn’t have in number by having BYGO (Blow your guts out) power in sound. We marched at all the home games and had a combined show with all four bands at homecoming. Cheering our teams on at every pep assembly, we followed them with a pep band at the out-of-town games. We went to marching contest and received a rating of good and we marched in the Jaycee Kid's Rodeo Parade. As soon as marching season was over, we started work on the music for the musical 110° IN THE SHADE. We started a stage band that everyone enjoyed. We played on the Cerebral Palsy Telethon and raised the roof of the gym supporting our basketball team at a few of the home games. We had our biggest thrill when we went to a stage band clinic at Weatherford and heard Clark Terry perform. The annual Pop Concert was in January, and then we started working for district contest. We missed a week of rehearsal because of the snow (cont. p. 64) Stcu e storm, but no one minded the extra rehearsals. We were very eager and nervous the day we went to contest. We were proud of the excellent rating of the band and the six superiors in solos and ensembles. Then April 15 the solos and ensembles went to state contest at OSU. We received one good rating by the flute trio; 3 excellents from the sax quartet, trumpet duet, and trumpet solo; and Alan and Kenda received superiors. We would like to thank the Band Boosters for their support and for the band banquet that was held on April 17. The band thanks Mrs. Morey for all she has done this past year. Also the band wants to give a very special thank you to Mr. Gensemer for all he has done this past year. He was the one who made it such a special year, one we'll always remember. Tiger Band Spirit! Many of the fans will not remember the scores of those games, but all will remember the great” snow that started falling during the games. The next Monday found the school silent with the front entrance totally blocked by bulldozer-defying drifts. Laverne had wound down to a standstill under an incredible armor of 24-32 inches of snow. As the sky cleared, rescue efforts began with heliocopters, snowmobiles, and Army Globemasters working together to bring food and medical aid to people and their livestock. School resumed one week later with the lowest absenteeism for the entire year. Many scheduled events were either cancelled or changed. After almost a week's standstill, the community once more came alive.
