4 TIGER ROAR ANNUAL 1968-69 A school building is constructed of steel and cement, strong and permanent, but it is designed to accommodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year buses empty their loads each morning and people stream into the hall- ways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. As Carl Sandburg said in a poem: “It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams, thoughts, and memories.” As each individual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes to the whole of Laverne High's soul - that abstract thing we call school spirit. Published by the Laverne Annual Staff I Laverne, Oklahoma Our Dedication In these years of unrest, the rare individuals are those who can distinguish themselves in the service of their country. Our American service men are such persons. Besides being dependable and enthusiastic, they have a sincere de- termination to make America the strong and free country she was meant to be. These few service men pictured here from our community are representatives of all the men who live and die for our country, and who have the honor to say: We live in America, the land of the free and the brave.” To Dedicated Men Dear God WILT thou bless our boys today? WILT thou give them strength and courage, clear vision, strength of heart for this day? THOU knowest each name. ;v : WILT thou safeguard their lives and in thine own good time bring them home to us again? HASTEN the day, Oh Lord, when war shall cease and peace shall again cover the earth. WILT thou comfort and cheer each one, who may be discouraged or lonely? AND, Heavenly Father, there may be some of our dearest who may this day make the supreme sacrifice of love and devotion for their country. CHEER such ones with thy presence and receive them into thy everlasting Kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN Administration SUPERINTENDENT Harry Shackelford The 1968-69 school year brings additional high- lights in the history of the Laveme School. Thirty-nine teachers staff our school this year. This is the most we have had. Also, we offer fifty-three units of credit, the most ever offered here. Seven teacher aides are here to assist. A kindergarten is new, too. And Mr. Jayroe is the assistant superintendent. More square miles have been added to our school district with the annexation of Overstreet and Clearlake. Our taxable wealth now approaches eleven million dollars. Our new teachers are Mr. Bill Heaton, Mr. Joe Cheap, Mrs. Glenda Riddle, Mrs. Dona McAtee, and Mrs. Sharon Brown. Our tragic loss was by the death of Mrs. Sophia Howard. Let us look forward to continued progress. My fond hope is to see a nice air-conditioned auditorium built with space comfortably to seat one thousand people. May God bless every one of you. As Laverne’s first assistant superintendent, I would like to express my thanks to the administration and fac- ulty for their fine cooperation. I would like to express a special thank you” to the seniors and student body for making this a fine year for all concerned. We wish for the seniors success and happiness, THE AMERICAN WAY, in the years to come. We that remain at LHS will look forward to a better year in 1969-70 as a result of you seniors passing our way. Under the direction of Mrs. Dona McAtee, morning and afternoon sessions were organized. Since many of the little ones were bus students, mothers formed carpools either to take them home at noon or bring them for the afternoon session. Objectives of kindergarten are to involve the youngster in school routine, to ad- just him socially to his school environment, to aid him in being away from home for an extended period, and to perform tasks involving coordination of the body as tools of learning are introduced. The kindergarten has long been a special project of Mr. Shackelford's: It is with great pride that we now have the kindergarten in the Laverne School. I have long had two dreams for our school - the kindergarten and a spacious auditorium. I now have high hopes of seeing the other part of my dream fulfilled in the near future. 50 Pride of School Clark Armor Barry Bayliff Jeri Blevins Bobbi Boldes Pixie Bowker Chris Brown Bryan Carnagey Jeff Cheap Teresa Deal Dean Evans Alan Gardner Sheila Harvey Jo Ann Jean Leslie Johnson Konya Maphet Deanne Merritt Cody M or land Lloyd McAtee Sheila Mclver Lisa Shuman AFTERNOON SESSION Jo Ann Jean, Dean Evans, and Clark Armor discovered that play- ing games taught them cooperation.
