C. McKee set foot on a ship to sail upward through the sea of education, Mrs. Retina Williams was their captain and led them through the first lap of their twelve year voyage. At the end of the first lap they rested for three months and in the fall of 1942 they weighed anchor with two more sailors, Lavora Bartow, and Dwayne Luck. Their captain that year was Miss Eula Cornett who guided them safely through the second lap of their voyage. But a paddle was added to help them over the rough places in the sea. When they sailed onward on their third lap they had Miss Blanche Ward as their cpatain who guided them safely over the high tide and stormy sea to fairer heights on to the fourth lap. They lost Dwayne Luck who left their ship to join them again on the ninth lap. Jack Shuman was the new sailor. They again took on more sailors, Joy Brinson, Louise Colton, Leota Hosler, Frances Taft, and Dewayne Hauth. Mrs. Bertha Bundle was their captain and helped them through the sandbars and on to the fifth lapof their voyage. Elsie Hancock and Roberta Johnson joined the sailors on their fifth lap with Mrs. Pat Aldridge as their guide through the first half and Mrs Miller through the second half. The sailors lost Mrs. Aldridge through death but will always have a place in their hearts for her. They also lost Leota Hosler who was to join them later in their twelfth lap. Roberta Johnson left this lap only to return the ninth lap. On the sixth lap, the sailors were anxious to sail on upward. They were joined by Bertha Albin, Bonita Hardy, Elbert Lee, Donald Hennigh, and Jerry Mills. Their captain was Mrs. Kimball who made that lap of their voyage very interesting. Miss Woodward was their guide on the seventh lap and Hazel Farrell was the sailor who came aboard that year and left to return on the ninth lap. On this lap the sailors put on a chapel program named, nPedro and His little Brother.n Elaine Hicks, Roy Johnson, and Ronnie Miner joined the eighth lap of their journey. Mrs. Lewis Cleveland guided them through this year of their successful voyage. They lost Lavora Bartow who joined them again on the tenth lap. On the ninth lap they took several different courses and Mrs. Rundle and Mr, Ray were their captains. Betty Baker, Wayne Howard, Billy Ed- wards, Shirley Edwards, Norval Bourquin, Curtis Anderson, Billy Meyer, Garrold LaMunyon and Leora Baker were the new sailors who joined them and Roberta Johnson, Hazel Farrell and Dwayne Luck rejoined them and all were in new surroundings but were still climbing upward and learning a lot and enjoying themselves very much, that is all the time except when they were initiated. There they were on the tenth lap with Donna Sparks as their new sailor and Mrs. Bartow and Mr. Kilmer as their captains in the year of 1950. The sailors were still climbing with one purpose in view, to get a higher and better education.n That year some of the girls dressed as Indians and served at the Junior and Senior banquet and a lot of the sailors participated in the sports world this lap. When it was time for their eleventh lap they were ready to weigh anchor with Betty Jones as their new sailor and Mr. and Mrs. Oakes for their captains. They had a Junior Play nDesperate Ambrosen which issued a lot of gun play and for weeks you could hear people saying I have notches in my notches.U They also had a Junior and Senior Banquet which was decorated as a night club. K That brings them to the last lap of a long prosperous struggle. The sailors acquired a few new members who were Rose Myers, Cody Miller, and June Richards and as their captains they elected Miss Ruth Jones and Mr. L, W. Woolbright to guide them through quite an exciting year. At last they had their revenge by initiating the freshmen but we really wonder who got the initiation, the Freshmen or the Seniors? The sailors finally received their Senior pictures after struggling, working, and waiting twelve long years for them. They published the school annual which proved to be a lot of hard work, but fun. They also presented another play, A banquet was given to them by the Junior Class. Then they took their final voyage together, their Senior Trip, and then their graduation exercises followed. Class Will The time has drawn near and we, the Seniors of '53, have gotten our heads together and decided that we the fortunate, need to leave some of our wonderful talents and abilities to the less fortunate of our dearly beloved school, namely the under classmen. First and foremost we should like to leave to the school, our ini- tials carved in desks and the gum left under the tables and chairs. To all the teachers, we leave a box of aspirins and arsenic, in case they may have the desire to use it. To the Juniors, we leave our ability to think up freshmen initiation stunts. To the Sophomores, we leave our ability to conduct an orderly class meeting. To the Freshmen, we leave our good manners and good behavior. And then each of the Seniors have made out their wills. Dewayne Hauth wills his wooden leg to anyone who can handle one. Wayne Howard wills his bleached blond hair to Miss Rugh Jones. Johnnie Marker wills his slimness to Johnnie Stubbs. Billy Meyer wills his graceful walk to Shirley Aylett and Patsy Carlisle. Donald Hennigh wills his job as president of the Senior class to Peggy 0'Connor Rose Myers and Lois Shelinbarger leave their giggles to Gloria Marteney. Jack Shuman wills his ability to chew snuff in class to Jim Chockley. Garrold La Munyon leaves his way of catching Texas women to Clavin Luck. Norval Bourquin wills his bold ways to Billy Bowker. Marilyn Adams wills her ability to play basketball to Alma Dean Lacrone. Curtis Anderson wills his married life to Lawrence Deal. Bertah Albin leaves her gift of gab to Carl Bentley and taste for red hair to Beverly Pemberton. Joy Brinson wills her forgetfulness to Carol Sue Albin. Donna Jo Sparks wills her great height to Shirley McAfee. Louise Colton and Leota Hosler wills their quiet ways to Carol Johnson and Margaret Lightfoot. Stella Shuman wills her deep voice to Belva Howard. Birdene Hickman and Bonita Nelson will their ability to set up housekeeping to Wanda Shuman and Phyllis Dosser. Frances Taft wills her ability to win blue ribbons on Livestock to Francine Winn Betty Jones wills her ability to meet the bus on time to her sister, Shirley. Roberta Johnson wills her ability to play the piano to Dale Secrest. Betty Baker wills all her sympathy to next years' annual and Newspaper editor. Jerry Mills wills his ability as a service station manager to Tommy Lemmons. Lavora Bartow wills her flirty ways to anyone who can profit by them, Elsia Hancock wills her wonderful friendship with Miss Beard to Glenda Wicker. Elaine Hicks wills her Texas drawl and witty ways to Norman Nielson. Billy Edwards wills his curly lashes to anyone who likes to flirt. Elbert Lee leaves his ability to catch all the women to Virgil Symes. Roy Johnson wills his ability to jitterbug to George Moore. Ronnie Miner wills his best wishes to Glenda's next year boyfriend. J. C, McKee wills his manly ways to Joe Freeman. Georga Lenz wills his good behavior in study hall to Johnny Klinger. Dwayne Luck wills his 165 lbs. to Roy Hoch. Cody Miller wills his ability to box to Carl Duble. June Richards wills her job as theater usher to Yvonne Paulk. Hazel Farrell and Shirley Edwards will their jobs as secretaries of the coaches to anyone who has nothing to do. Leora Baker wills her ability to get work done to Billy Hancock. Miss Jones and Mr. Woolbright will their job as sponsor to the next year class. Prophec In the year of our Lord, 1963, I Elaine Hicks, author of the comic strips, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, left my winter mansion on Mars, climbed into my space ship and zoomed toward earth. My destination was the Empire State Building which I had recently bought to be converted into my summer mansion. After alighting on earth, I climbed into my jet plane to tour the U. S. when someone spoke to me, Turning to look, I saw my old classmate, Bertha Albin.4 She was America's number one jet ace. I shot down 176 MIG'S, she said, and was made Commander-in- Chief of the WJAA.n fWomen's Jet Ace Association.l After a brief con- versation, we took off and Bertha began to tell me what had happened to our.o1d classmates in the past years. Birdene Hickman and Bonita Nelson were both living near Laverne. Douglas and Birdene are President and Vice-President of the Trans- Continental Airway System of Laverne. Gene has become the mayor of Laverne and Bonita is the first-lady of that great city. Jack Shuman is now the general manager of nThe Shuman Trailer Courtsn and has made Laverne a great summer resort. Roberta Johnson is with the Philharmonic Orchestra, and specializes in playing Beethoven's Concerto in C Minor on the glockenspiel. Frances Taft, a fromer Tiger star, is playing with the All-American Basketball Girls. Elsia Hancock, who is the coach, says that Frances is her most valuable player. .Our first stop was made at Chicago where we had heard that Auturo Toscanini, was giving his opening performance of the season. As we walked in the door what should we hear but the lilting voice of Marilyn Adams singing the nHa1lelujah Chorus' in four parts. My, we were thrilled! It seems that Marilyn had obtained the position with the orchestra after haveing appeared on Arthur Godfrey's 'Talent Scouts singing nThe Holy Cityn. After the show we again took off and Bertha told me more about our old friends. Betty Jones has recently become the proprietor and manager of the 'Hatched, Matched, and Snatchedn funeral parlor of Laverne. Wayne Howard has made his fortune. He is now able to hire a chauffeur so that he could use both arms instead of one. Jerry Mills has full time employment with him. As we were flying over Arkansas, Bertha looked through our tele- scope. In the Arkansas Valley was Donna Jo CSparksl LaMunyon, waving a whip and shouting, nGet along there, you confounded muleln And Virl was sittin' under a shade tree drinking Uhome brew.n When we arrived in New York, we saw a copy of the Daily Mirror, and found an editorial by Betty Baker. She had gained wide recognition after the publication of the 1953 ULaverne Tigern and is now editor-in- chief of the 'Mirrorn. She commented that she was always seeing herself in the nMirrorn. In the WNew York Mirrorn we red an article about Leora Baker. She is now the Secretary-General of the Unived Nations. She started on the road to fame when she was Mr. Harry Shackelford's secretary at Laverne High School. We heard that the Yankees were playing the Red Sox, so we went to see the game. Imagine our surprise when we saw on the manager's bench, Mr, Woolbright, our former sponsor. He is now coaching the Harlem Globe Trotters during the basketball season and in the sum er, serves as head coach and manager to the New York Yankees. We were sitting there watching the game when we heard a familiar voice say, NCome on pitch! Srike the bums outln Looking around we saw Joy fBrinsonJ Moore jumping and shouting. It seems that Bill was pitching and had struck out every man in the last three games. On Sunday, Bertha and I decided to attend Church, As we entered, quiet music came to us. Nearing the front we saw Roy Johnson playing the organ. The oreacher rose and delivered a very touching sermon. Much to our surprise we discovered that the preacher was none other than our own John Marker. We saw Lavora, too. we had always heard that she wanted to be a preacher's wife. From New York we went to Laverne to visit old friends. While passing through Slapout, we saw a sign which read nCurtis's Bar and Grilln. When we entered, Curtis was mopping up the bar and Raymona was running the cash register. In Curtis's Cafe we saw the boxing matches over television. The fight was at Madison Square Garden. There we saw Cody Miller, who is noted as the second great nJohn L.' We went to see Hazel fFarrellJ Travis while in Laverne. She was rocking the baby and mending socks. While we were there, five little dirty-faced kids came in and said, WMomma, could we have a nickel for an ice cream cone?N We were really shocked when we heard about Donald Hennigh, our fromer class president. It seems that only last week he had been con- victed of bootlegging liquor. We went down to the city jail and there was Ginger sobbing as if her heart would break and saying, U0h, Hnmey, why did you do it?U Pretty soon, the sheriff came along and says, 'Times upin That voice sounded familiar! It was Stella Shuman. Since Stella had taken office, crime in Harper County has decreased 505. On the corner of Main and Broadway at Laverne, a rather large crowd had gathered. Near the center, we saw Leota Hosler standing on a soap box and shouting at the top of her voice, Ulf I am elected for Governor, there will be a tooth in every mouth, a hair on every head, and a rat in every barnln We had never thought of Leota as a politician. We were sorry to hear about J. C. McKee. It seems that he had been standing in for Roy Rogers. The bandits had caught him, tied him up, and set a time bomb under the house. Of course,he whistled for Trigger, but Trigger is getting old, and when he tried to untie the rope, his false teeth fell out and he couldn't get the knots out. J.C. will be in the hospital several weeks. Two of our married classmates, June Richards and Louise Colten Bower were also living in Laverne. They have formed a union and are selling alley cats at 84 apeice to support their husbands who have re- tired. We also visited Oklahoma University. A sign on one of the doors said, nProfessor Myers---Physcology and Philosophyn. Well, Rose must have decided to follow in her mother's footsteps. ' We turned on the radio. A program, UJust Plain Willn, was just ,:,, coming on. Elbert Lee, the star of the show had just been married four times and was having to sell Christmas cards to pay alimony. The pro- gram was sponsored by Bill's Bubble Bath. Inquiring, we learned that Bill Edwards was busy inventing cosmetics to keep his complexion beautiful. Right after Elbert went off the air, four voices with perfect harmony came on. It was the Four Knights, Ronnie Miner, Dwayne Luck, Bill Meyer and George Lenz, They sang top tunes and a few Lucky Strike extras. My we were thrilled! Our last stop was Hollywood, where we saw the premeire performance of that great movie WThe Snows of Siberian. Guess what! Starring in the picture were Norval Bourquin and Lois Shelinbarger. Norval has often been called the modern Humphery Bogart, while Lois has completely overshadowed Jane Russell. It seems that Miss Jones has made quite a name for herself with WJonesy's Wildlife Resturantn. She specializes in serving such delicacies as quail, phesant, wild turkey, and wild duck. As we started to leave, we saw Alene Beall peeking out from the back in a chef's cap and apron.- Looking over the list of the ten most wanted criminals in the U.S., we saw Garrold LaMunyon's name. He escaped from Alcatraz after being sentenced for cattle rustling in Texas. Back at home, I saw a squad car in front of my house. Inside sat Dewayne Hauth, the collector for the Internal Revenue Bureau and Shirley Edwards, Chief of the FBI. It seems I had evaded income tax and owed the government s5,ooo,ooo,ooo. Well, guess I won't be seeing you again for a while, but anyway it's a comfortable cell. .u Billy Bowker Margaret Lightf Nadine Fox Donna Ball 'za- -45 'fb Vonda Hester Bill Zollinger unior Class Row 1: Gloria Marteney-Treasury, Wayne Selle- Vice-President, Peggy O'Connor-President, Carol Neihart-Secretary.
