The main objective of Allied Youth is to let students know the effects of alcohol. Since the greater part of solving a problem is 1 1 understanding it, the club makes a study of alcoholism and why it exists. As a social problem and a disease, much can be done about the problem of drinking and its reasons for existence. For 1 this reason, Allied Youth is one of the most worthwhile clubs of Laurinburg High School. Many 1 people are faced with the problem of drinking and we hope that we can be better informed in 1 order to be able to overcome any that we might face. 1 1 1 The large number of members in Allied Youth exemplifies the students' interest in self-better- ment. 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 72 1 1 1 an is J DESIGNED TO AID YOUNG PECPLE IN ABOUT ALCOHOLISM. Funds for these services are provided by various money-making projects throughout the year. Members are chosen on the basis of a minimum 85 scholastic average and qualities of character, leadership, and ser- vice. New members are selected in an induction ceremony soon after midterm exams. Ce leste Mason is the Editor-in-chief. Ann Medlin and Kaye McCormick are the associate editors. The Scotsman staff is composed mainly of jour- nalism students. Mrs. Mary Odom, journalism teacher, is the faculty advisor. Celeste Mason and Ann Medlin accept an award from Walter Spearman, Professor of Journalism at U.N.C., for their outstanding news coverage. The annual staff is composed of students from every When confusion reigns, it pours class who wish to do voluntary work. THIS IS OUR NEWSPAPER. COLOR IT BLACK, ALL OVER. No single quotation describes the philosophy of the 1963 Fighting Scott annual staff better than one's reach should exceed his grasp. With this philosophy we were bound to have failures and we did. However, we believe that our successes more than compensated for our failures, for we attempt- ed to do and did do many things that distinguish a yearbook as representative of a particular school. We take great pride in the originality of our year- book cover alone, and we hope that here we have set a precedent that will be followed by the year- book staffs of Laurinburg High School to come. Credit for the production of the 1963 Fighting Scott must be divided among many individuals. We are indeed indebted to Mrs. Eloise Hawk be- cause her efforts last year as annual sponsor en- abled us to do many things that otherwise could not have been done. She left us the best inheri- tance possible---money. Credit must also be given to Editor Elizabeth Jones and Assistant Edi- tors Karen Gibson and Linda Lundin who supplied the originality, encouragement, and hard work which are essential to every good yearbook. Of With his endless energy and his clever imagination Mr Thomas, our annual sponsor, urged us on to complete the yearbook successfully. You did what with the negatives? Paul Folmsbee and Johnny Sweeley gave much of their time so that we might have interesting photographs equal importance were the business activities ofthe staff directed by Business Manager Freda Howell with the assistance of Sally Roach and Ann Andrews. As we try to give credit where credit is due, we feel that we must mention Allen Webster, Suzanne Singleton, and Sylvia Clayton whose tireless efforts helped make this yearbook possible. Also on the staff were Ellen Jones, Shirley Wade, McNeill Gibson, Louis Sipka, Ed Guest, Bob Thompson, Bill Campbell, Johnny Sweeley, and Paul Folmsbee. In short, this year's annual is the result of the concerted efforts of many individuals. We hope that you will be as proud of it as we are. THE NATIONAL I-IONOR SOCIETY AND TI-III ORGANIZATIONS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE The members of the National Honor Society, Elizabeth Jones, Freda Howell, Linda Lundin, Karen Gibson, and Hope Keeton, represent the high standards of excellence in Laurinburg High School. We look up to you, Mr. Calhoun. Members of the National Honor Society are select- ed on the basis of character, leadership, and ser- vice, as well as scholarship. A minimum scholas- tic average of 90 is required of all members. A maximum of 5 per cent ofthe junior class and 15 per cent ofthe senior class are eligible for mem- bership. New members are received into the so- ciety in a very impressive tapping ceremony con- ducted by veteran members. The great honor of being in the National Honor Society inspires many to strive for excellence in scholarship and charac- ter during their school years. Talks with teachers and other school officials have also been scheduled. From these activities, the members hope to get. a birds eye view of the teaching profession. No other club in Laurinburg High School has done so much for the school and community as has the Boy's Monogram Club. The club presented an alumni basketball game and sock-hop, with all profits going to CARE. They also sponsored a chicken-plate dinner in order that boys who didn't have the money could go to football camp. However, the main function of the Boys' Monogram Club is to promote athletic competition and good sportsmanship in Laurinburg High School. They have done this in the past and will continue to do it as long as athletics remain at Laurinburg High School. The Boys Monogram Club officers include Graham S The Monogram boys enjoy their new club room. King, Jim Richardson, and Denny Staples. 86 MONOGRAM CLUBS IS T0 ENCOURAGE SCHOOL SPIRIT IN L. H. S. The members of the Girls' Monogram Club render many useful services to our school. Members of the Girls' Monogram Club must have earned a letter as a basketball player, as a cheerleader, or as a manager. Members must undergo spring initiation before becoming a mem- ber. The club is a service club and has done much to improve the school. The main project for 1963 has been to equip and maintain a sick room. Money for the projects is earned through an annual student-faculty basketball game. The club officers are Mary E. McArthur, Pam Still, Mary G. Grubbs, Sally Roach, and Nancy Liles. I I DECA AND VIC CULTIVATE OUR The D.E.C.A. officers are Joanne Brown, Steve Fields, Tommy Chance, and John Smith. This newly organized club has proved to be a success. 88 FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS. It is our purpose to grow in scholastic achievement, vocational competence, social adjustment, and service to our fellow men. Our chapter is affiliated with the North Carolina V.I.C., andtwe have participated in the district meetings. The twelve members of V.I.C. work to help train good workers. 89 THE SPO IS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP THROUGH SERVICE. The Student Participation Organization is the governing body of our school. Each year one representative and one alternate are elected from each homeroom to serve on the Student Council, which functions actively throughout the school year. In 1962-1963, the S.P.O. council met for the first time in its own study hall during sixth period. This study hall acted without the services of a teacher, although it did have an advisor. Laurinburg's Junior Varsity football team, coached by Bill Inabinett, wound up with five wins and four losses for a very successful season. The J.V.'s opened up the season by falling to Wades- boro, 9-6. The squad met Hamlet next and won their first game of the year by edging the Red Rams, 6-O. The fired-up team clashed with Wadesboro again and downed them 14- 13. Raeford, the next victim, was beaten, 20-13, and then decisively beaten, 26-0. The Scotties lost their next three to Rockingham, 18- 6, Sanford, 12-7, and Lumberton, 6-0. They closed the season by trimming Hamlet again, 6-0. The junior varsity football team had a power-packed season. 97 OUR BOYS BRING MANY LAURELS OF VICTORY 1 W W 1 1 i Y Y 1 Y O l Charles Bounds Bill Parker Leonard Thompson 1 1 I ill Campbell Barney Summerlin Dan Dean John Adams TO L.H.S. Spirit, desire, and teamwork are the ingredients which have made this year's Fighting Scot basketball team one of the great teams in the history of Laurinburg. Posting their best conference record in six years, the Scots captured the admiration of every basketball team they faced. Not enough respect can be given to their coach, Mr. C.C. Buck Knotts, for he represented the true spirit of the team. Their only conference losses have been to last year's state champs, Sanford. Yes, the Fighting Scots have made for themselves a splendid record that will stand for many years to come. Charles Bounds is so fast that the camera is not able to catch him. BASKETBALL TEAM, COACH The junior varsity basketball team met the challenges of the opposing teams with vigor. Coach Yongue guides his team to many victories. The junior varsity basketball team under the able leadership of Coach Douglas Yongue had a good season. It is true that it was not an impress- ive season from the standpoint of the number of games won. However, the team showed excellent potential, determination to win, and good sports- manship, and the members of the squad should develop into some very fine material for next year 's varsity. 102 YONGUE DEVELOPS OUR FUTURE CAGE STARS Hey! Get that rebound, Scotties! The Girl's Varsity Basketball team of 1962-1963 con- sisted of fifteen members from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The team played several more games than the clubs of previous years. All members who supported the Scotties throughout the year were initiated into the Girls' Monogram Club at the end of the official season. 106 A GOAL FOR THESE .l.V. GIRLS. The sixteen members of the junior varsity basketball team worked hard to show the fans good games. i It is not often that a team comes along in which a coach can take tremendous pride even though the team has not had an impressive winning streak. Miss McCorkle, coach of the junior varsity girls' basket- ball squad of 1963, assures us that she has just such a team. She has repeatedly stated that her J.V.'s have always shown good sportsmanship, team spirit, and determination to win in contest after contest. What finer tribute could anyone pay to a team whether it finished first or last? Miss McCork1e is the spark that sets the team ablaze. 107 Charles Bounds Ebbie Lassiter Mike Bullard Mike Tyson B illy Quick Ronnie Williams THE BASEBALL DIAMCND IS A SCENE OF Milton Turner Covey Carter 'Robert Peele 1 1 Nancy Carter THE SPIRIT OFL Carol Summerlin Head Cheerleader Anna Hasty Danna Roach Janet Purcell A S N is X Joyce Campbell Mary Gwen Grubbs Judy BY OUR vlvAclous CHEERLEADERS.
