Greetings The Laurentian Experience combines a qual- ity education with a lifestyle of friendliness and the Northern pioneering spirit. To date in the fall of 1981, the University has graduated 13,400 students who are making contribu- tions in educational, social, commercial, in- dustrial, cultural, and public areas. While there are representatives of our Alumni around the world, the majority have stayed in Northern Ontario and are contributing to the development of our region. Laurentian is a regional University, and we respond to that by directing much of our research, com- munity services, and indeed our programmes to the particular needs of our area. - I am very pleased to see the students' year- book reinstituted. I trust that it will keep many fond memories kindled: friendships made, experiences shared, knowledge gain- ed, and insights established. I believe that as the years go by, you will increasingly recognize that your university years have been highly formative. One of Laurentian's unique features is our bicultural milieu, with its rich offerings of culture and opportunity for enrichment. To all our students l wish success in all you undertake. Bonne chance. - ' Henry B.A. Best PresidentlRecteur 3 - VN. ,J ff What is the Laurentian Experience? The Laurentian Experience is a learning experience. lt is here that each one of us can develop to our greatest potential. Laurentian's small size offers a studentlfaculty ratio best suited for individual growth. Here, we have the opportuni- ty of personal contact with our ins- tructors, an opportunity that is rarely found in a larger university. The Laurentian Experience is also a Northern Experience. In our unique setting we are able to preserve and promote both the English and French languages and cultures. Higher education at Laurentian will not only prepare the individual for the market place, but will also get them ready for a complete way of life. 4 .. . .V . . if 3 1 .1 'u .,a nau..... Board of Governors The Board of Governors of Laurentian University is composed of twenty-four voting members and representatives from the facul- ty, the student body, the support staff and the alumni. The diversity of the region, which the University serves, is exemplified by the varied backgrounds, geographic locations and cultural heritage of its members. The committment of the Board to the stan- dard of excellence, which is expected of a University and which is shared by the Laurentian community, is of paramount im- portance. The Board looks forward with optimism and enthusiasm to the many exciting challenges that the University will face in the nineteen eighties. Their season record of 6 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties gave them the OUAA fOntario Univer- sities Athletic Unionj league title. Post-season OUAA championship play was the Vees victorious over the Laurier Golden Hawks in the semi- finals and the Waterloo Warriors in the final. It was the Soccer Vees fifth OUAA title. The OUAA championship launched the Vees into the CIAU tCanadian Intercollegiate Athletic Unionj semi- final in Edmonton where they lost a close game to the Alberta Golden Bears, 1-0. We'Il show them next year! All the players gave exceptional performances and several were selected to the first and second OUAA all- star teams. Lane McAdam, Keith Bridge, Peter Pinheiro and Barry Hackett were chosen to the first team while Craymer Forth was selected to the second team. Barry Hackett was on the CIAU first all-star team while team mates Keith Bridge and Peter Pinheiro were selected to the CIAU second team. Greg Zorbas, a veteran coach, guided the Vees throughout their play earning the OUAA as well as the CIAU title of Coach of the Year. . - M ' .4 ' : ,Q , xx-4 -x'5:V:14g2'?I '1'f - .fm , ,lf f 0 , ,. rf 'Ay mu. Both children and adults par- ticipated in the fun-filled day of events. One of the highlights was a forty foot bir- thday cake which Dr. Best, the President of Laurentian, sliced with the assistance of several students. Events such as a Modern Languages Department Quiz, shows in the Doran Planetarium, demonstrations of new library technology to show the universlty's microfiched catalogue and computerized data search ter- minal and tours of the Science and Engineering and computer centre all took place during the afternoon. A -Q 411' j x 1 PUBNIGHTS Every university has its popular Spot. At Laurentian it's the Voyageur Pub. The Pub is the place to go for a quick game of pool, a romantic tum around the dance floor, or to watch one's favorite sport on the oversized television screen. Many lasting friendships have begun in the Pub. A night in the Pub provides the perfect opportunity for Laurentian's students to relax and get better acquainted. ,X Q it P ' ' film X S V , Wu Q QVNN. s, ,t .-.X :X Xxx N Q Q 3 X Q X 5 X X ' !m NN Eff -,Z X, x F-Z XAJ rfb' gli! He was follow- ed by Mr. Alfred Rouleau, Past President of the Mouve- ment Desjardins, and the Honourable Joseph Smallwood, former President of Newfoundland. The Falconbridge Lecture Series began in 1978 and there have been from three to five lectures each year, The series is financed from a memorial fund establish- ed by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., and supported by private donations to bring to Sudbury eminent figures from academic circles, business, public life, the professions and the arts. Laurentian students thus come in Contact with some of the greatest minds inthe world. 5 4- X sus N HHH THE CNIB FUND RAISER During the early months of the 1981-82 term the Students' General Association organized the annual CNIB fund raising drive and dance. The students' ef- forts this year were very rewarding and more than 800 dollars was raised for the organization. Special thanks goes to the S.G.A., the School of Social Work student council, and the School of Com- merce student council, for their generous donations. t x 6..7-pk 160 53.1. '-'si 5 , 'X 1 K ,. 'Twas Halloween night, and the majority of students appeared in costume. You may remember sharing your table with the devil, step- ping on a leopard's tail while dancing, having a conver- sation in pantomime or feeling that tingling sensation as death won yet another game of pool. ' Vampires, sailors, cowboys and clowns, vikings, mice and a bumblebee as well as many unidentifiable monsters were on the loose that night. The fun con- tinued into the witching hour, when presentations for best costume were awarded, and on until closing time, which brought an end to a haunting evening. L.- l U K...--f .r I 6. . I have long known and loved the sense of gratification that can be achieved in creating a theatrical production. It is a gratlflcatlon that touches all my senses, all my thoughts, and leaves me wanting more and greater challenges. l've long believed that apart from sheer pleasure in achievement, the theatre provides its par- ticipants an unmatched opportunity to explore the boun- darles of their own characters and the characters of the communities wlthln which they live. It is my awareness of this opportunity to enjoy and learn to grow that I wish to share with others. As a professional and as a teacher, I am often asked to describe the traits that I believe individuals must possess in order to become successful participants In the theatre. Most simply, I think they must be sensltlve to the experience of being human. They must know, or at least wlsh to know, what makes people sad, angry, amazed, happy. And they must have a desire to recreate these emotions with care and respect. Llke many direc- tors, I see actors as empty vessels, as persons who never permit their own personalities to interfere with becoming another on stage. Actors wlsh only to be filled by the pIaywrIght's Intentions In such a way that the au- dience sees only characters, not personalities. To me, one of the greatest advantages of working with students In a University setting is that we are given relatively free reln to produce plays that might not be produced In a commercial setting. All good plays are im- portant plays, but often the more Important plays are not winners at the box office. I think the theatre has a moral obllgatlon to enrich Its public, not just to entertain or divert It. The theatre has the peculiar ablllty to challenge and comfort Its audiences In a pleasant sort of way. A CULTURAL OFFERING BY THORNELOE PLAYERS On November 26, 27 and 28, the Thorneloe Players performed Thornton Wilder's play, The Skin of Our Teeth as part of Lauren- tian's cultural offerings to the community. The Skin of Our Teeth is a play based on the theme that mankind always makes it through the disasters that plaque its ex- istence but just barely. Wilder's humour and his warm affection for the 'family man', are much in evidence in this production. The play was directed by Bill Hart, and the cast was made up of fine amateur talent, drawn from both the university and the community. lt included Ron Tough, Jennifer Robson and Janet Lagace. The Skin of Our Teeth proved to be a superb play. 167 ,,..,.,t ..,. ...Y l BLOOD DONOR CLINIC This year's Blood Donor Clinic, held in the Great Hall, was a remarkable success. EDITOR'S M ESSAG E Producing 'Experience '82' proved to be a much larger task than this group of students thought, but, after a few 'growing pains', the yearbook was on its way. This being the first yearbook in a number of years, we had to overcome a great many problems in establishing ourselves. We started late - we were disorganized - we fought - but the yearbook is a suc- cess. I must say 'Thank You' to those dedicated in- dividuals who stuck to it until the end. ln future years, production will be much easier, and perhaps, more of the University's students will help produce a book that was once a cherished tradition, but has sadly been neglected for too long. Berry presents cheque to Science Centre President George Lund. Laurentian University President Dr. Henry Best looks on. Sudbury means a lot to us Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited has been a reponsible developer of Canada's natural resources for more than 50 years. The history and growth of the company has paralleled that of Northern Ontario. Established in 1928 after many years of exploration in the Sudbury Basin, Faconbridge has become an important supplier of nickel to world markets and an important employer in the Sudbury region. Over the years. Falconbridge has operated under the belief that it is just not good enough to take from the land, you must also put something back. Falconbridges Sudbury Operations has turned this belief into a major commitment, As a matter of fact. Sudbury Operations has established seven basic policies by which we live and operate. Community As part of that commitment, the people of Falconbridge believe in improving the quality of life in our operating communities. Over the years, the company has provided assistance, either directly or financially, to thousands of educational, cultural, sport and community service organizations. We try to be more than just a good neighbor. This support has taken many forms, such as our recent 51,000,000 donation to the Sudbury Science Centre, pictured above, which our President, H.T. Berry, predicted will provide a unique learning experience for all residents of Northern Ontario and visitors from afar: and our large donations to the Sudbury General Hospital's CAT Scanner campaign, and the Memorial Hospitals Critical Care Unit. These benefit North Eastern Ontario as a whole. Then there is the Falconbridge Lecture Series which attracts important figures from academic circles, public life, the professions, business and the arts to Sudbury for the benefit of all. The lecture series is made possible through the Falconbridge Memorial Fund which is also supported by private donations. It provides an appropriate means of honouring deceased employees and recognizes the contributions of our employees to the progress of the company. Education We also work closely with educators to help create an awareness of the mining industry for students. In addition, the company continues to play an active role in the development of post-secondary institutions in the north such as Laurentian University and Cambrian College in Sudbury and the School of Mines in Haileybury. The company also provides scholarships and bursaries for students to attend these and other educational institutions. Employees Our support does not stop there. With approximately 4,000 employees in the Sudbury area, our tax dollars and pay cheques provide a significant financial shot in the arm for the entire region. In addition, Falconbridge people are an integral part of the community and our employees give of themselves, individually as volunteers, to help make Sudbury the wonderful place it is today. At Falconbridge, commulnity service is not just an obligation, it's a responsibility. FALCONBRIDGE NICKEL MINES LI ITED Committing itself to the future 'T '5 J' - -.- - .
