FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT On August 2, 1972, Gudrun Ottens left her home in Cuxhaven, West Germany, to come to the United States. Gudrun arrived in Laurens on August 3 and was met by the Arnold Wenells with whom she was to stay for the next year on their farm south east of Laurens. Gudrun is the daugh- ter of Hans and Ilse Ottens of Cux- haven a city of about 60, 000. Her father is a construction worker. She has a married brother, Hans-Torg and two younger sisters, Birgett and Karin. In her American family, Gudrun has two married brothers, Doug and Don, and a sister Kathy. Last year the YFU fYouth for Under- standingj, sent a letter to Gudrun's school asking for applicants to come to the United States. Gudrun applied and went to the American Embassy for an interview. When she found out she had been accepted, she began making plans for her one year stay in the United States. Gudrun went to grade school for four years and to a gymnasium, or high school for 8 years before coming to the United States as a senior in high school. She had studied English for six years and had also learned a little French . Besides the United States, Gudrun has also visited France and England. While in the United States she traveled to Chicago, Omaha-Council Bluffs, Des Moines, and Denver. Some of her fondest memories of her stay here are the American holidays, her trip to Chicago, and graduation, Gudrun likcs the American people very much because they have made her feel a part of them and have all welcomed her so warmly. Gudrun's future plans are to work for two years in a television repair business, as required for entry into college. There she will study for 3 years to be a radio-telegraphist, go back to work for a short time, and go to school again for 5 years. Gudrun really enjoyed her stay in Laurens, where we were very honored to have her. On July 30, 1973, Gudrun left us to return to her family in Germany.
