Wright Q4-Op G. Edmundson--R. Roewe Q2-OJ J. Johnson--G. Carlson The 1972-73 school year has been a third consecutive excellent year for the Laurens Community High School Speech Department. The Debate -Forensics Team has gained State-wide recognition in all facets of our expanded Speech pro- gram. In Debate the Speaking Elks captured their first IHSSA District Championship ever. The team of John Sernett, Brad Stewart, David Alstott and Ray Roewe tied for third place in the Class B Division of the State tournament. In the DES MOINES REGISTER'S weekly Debate Poll the Speaking Elks have been ranked in the Top Ten every week for the past two years. This past year they gained a weekly high of 2nd place, held for three weeks, and a low of 9th, held for only one week. The final rankings placed the Speaking Elks 7th in the Top Ten. In Debate the Speaking Elks garnered 176 wins against 104 losses, for an over-all win percentage of 63070. In the last three years the Elks are 363 -276. This is a yearly average of 121 wins and 92 losses. The three year totals show a 57070 win margin and a loss ratio of 43070. The team was also honored this year with two of the Varsity members earning All-State recognition as two of the top 18 de- baters in Iowag Ray F. Roewe and John Sernett. Sernett was also named All-Conference in the Northwest Iowa Novice Debate League. Other members of the team earning All-Conference NINDL recognition were Brad Stewart and Pat Thompson, First Team, and Marilyn and Lowell Wright, Second Team. In the Conference Tournament held at Spencer Frank Hopp and Damon Peterson won the first place affirmative trophy and Grant Carlson--Pat Thompson the second place award. Jeff Gregory, Fred Johnson and Dale Roewe won the first place negative trophy with Brad Stewart and John Sernett the second place award.

SPEECH In extra -curricular activities outside the immediate pro- gram offered at Laurens we have had success in the Amer- ican Legion Oratorical contest, Soil Conservation Speech Program and the V, F, W, 's Voice of Democracy contest. In the Voice of Democracy contest held locally this year, Frank Hopp earned third place honors, Kathy Wenell was second and Ray Roewe first. Roewe went on to win the 10th District competition and third place in the State of Iowa. Ray's Speech earned a fine scholarship of S225.00. In the IHSSA's District tournament at Mallard the Speaking Elks brought home 21 'I' ratings, bringing their total 'I's at District to 64 in the last three years. At the State compe- tition in Lelviars the Forensics team captured seven 'I' rat- ings and twelve 'II's. In the last three years at State the Speaking Elks have brought home 17 'I' ratings. In State Speech competition at LeMars Ray Roewe and Dave Alstott earned 'I' ratings in two different areas with Greg Edmund- son, Marjorie Kees and Kathy Wenell earning top honors in single categories. if an wk! ,VX 'I's at State Speech Contest Top Forensic Awards l'
