Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1973 volume:

THE CLASS OF 1973 PRESENTS THE LAURENTIAN LAURENS HIGH SCHOOL, LAURENS, IOWA 4 X 1 Y s Za Throughout the preparation of our yearbook, individuals other than the annual staff have devoted their time and effort to assist this creation. We wish to express our gratitude to the following: Strathman Studios of Pocahontas--our official photogra- phers, J an Carlson for her assistance to the annual advisor, Lon Bruggernan and Dave Weiss for developing some of our photographs, and THE LAURENS SUN for the use of several school photographs. Our deepest appreciation goes to those who helped to put the finishing touches on this book: Mr. and Mrs. Dave Liljedahl, Kevin Lind, Craig Herrick, Jim and Tom Millward, Tammy Van Horsen, Lori Peterson, and Vickey Ford. We the Senior Class of 1973 should care to dedicate our annual to Memories which have and will con- tinue to play an influential role in designing the experiences of our individual lives. Memories . . . the positive, the negative--a homogeneous mixture upon which we will continuously reverberate throughout our lifetime. The magnitude of their efficacy may never fully be realized. Look to the future-- preserve the past. Our lives are slaves to time. And time never stops. But if you could stop before time changed it all, What would it look like? rffqz' Q 8 N ik i 1 v x jtxxfgk if K N 3 X Q 1 A, fx ff' 5- ,xx f v, '21, xi X xy YJX T ..,,. THE 1973 LAURENS ELKS FOOTBALL SQUAD Hitherto, Laurens football has been an enjoyable pleasantry at which spectators witnessed the exemplified talents of the youth. This year, however, football at Laurens ascended into a category that even Wilbur Young would admire. The metamorphosis was a direct consequence of the debonair debutant Head Coach, Richard Hamilton. Filling out the Fear- some Foursome, which have also been attributed with the cognomen, Quixote Quartet qfor at times their innuendos con- ir veyed aberrations such as attacking windmillsj were Offensive line coach, Roger Baskervilleg Defensive coach, Doug Schu- lerg and Backfield coach, George James. The amalgamation of these minds, while under the ominous eye of the Irate Irishman from Emmetsburg, was the inspiration that instilled within the minds of the Elks, their implacable desire for con tact. That same impetus was applied in cultivating and nurturing a Team Philosophy that resulted in an incomparable season for which the Elks will not soon be forgotten. X FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT On August 2, 1972, Gudrun Ottens left her home in Cuxhaven, West Germany, to come to the United States. Gudrun arrived in Laurens on August 3 and was met by the Arnold Wenells with whom she was to stay for the next year on their farm south east of Laurens. Gudrun is the daugh- ter of Hans and Ilse Ottens of Cux- haven a city of about 60, 000. Her father is a construction worker. She has a married brother, Hans-Torg and two younger sisters, Birgett and Karin. In her American family, Gudrun has two married brothers, Doug and Don, and a sister Kathy. Last year the YFU fYouth for Under- standingj, sent a letter to Gudrun's school asking for applicants to come to the United States. Gudrun applied and went to the American Embassy for an interview. When she found out she had been accepted, she began making plans for her one year stay in the United States. Gudrun went to grade school for four years and to a gymnasium, or high school for 8 years before coming to the United States as a senior in high school. She had studied English for six years and had also learned a little French . Besides the United States, Gudrun has also visited France and England. While in the United States she traveled to Chicago, Omaha-Council Bluffs, Des Moines, and Denver. Some of her fondest memories of her stay here are the American holidays, her trip to Chicago, and graduation, Gudrun likcs the American people very much because they have made her feel a part of them and have all welcomed her so warmly. Gudrun's future plans are to work for two years in a television repair business, as required for entry into college. There she will study for 3 years to be a radio-telegraphist, go back to work for a short time, and go to school again for 5 years. Gudrun really enjoyed her stay in Laurens, where we were very honored to have her. On July 30, 1973, Gudrun left us to return to her family in Germany. L QMQLM o7w-M50-39-191 Umm!! naw.. Dave Als- tott, Barb Nelson and John Elm assis- ted in the sales of this yearbook. We divided the yearbook into sections to coincide with all the facets of school life throughout the year. I would like to commend my staff for the unique manner in which the format of this book was planned. This is a very essential part in the makings of any yearbook, for this is the base upon which we build the entire struc- ture. Eminent recognition should be given to Ray Roewe and Barb Nelson for their supreme fortitude. They de- voted several hundred hours to de- signing and drafting the pages of this yearbook. The quality of their work is the tantamount of excellence. My deepest admiration goes out to these two exceptionally fine individuals.
