Zi The exotic valley of Shangri-La was a non- existent idyllic land depicted as a utopia in James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon. The three-course dinner was served by the mothers of the members of the junior class. Yellow and black streamers and an oriental picture complimented the stairway. Entry to the prom area was through a small garden. This garden had a dainty blue and white sky with twinkling stars. A footbridge arched over a winding blue stream which was studded with lily pads. Tables were decorated in gold and black with appropriate centerpieces, programs, napkins, and chop sticks. Twelve members of the freshman class dressed in coolie outfits served the dinner. A large pagoda and ricksha added to the dining scene, the east wall was a solid red with Shangri-La in large gold letters. To the north, participants gazed into a garden set with an erupting volcano, Ming trees and Jap- anese cherry trees in blossom. A stern life-sized Buddha in gold prominently filled one corner. A spot light played on a mammoth silver dragon. This ser- pent, with large red eyes and fire extruding from his mouth, furnished the background for many camera shots. Large sliding doors made up the western ex- tremity. These doors, partly open, revealed in the distance scenic mountains, streams, boats and trees. Hop-sing's Variety Show, headed by Thaine Hopkins, gave a short program. Clyde Lindquist, junior class president and general chairman gave the welcome to the group. Dennis Wright, senior class president, gave a response for the guests. A trio of junior girls and a quartet of junior boys presented two musical numbers with Anita Youngquist as accom- panist.
