All honor and all glory To thee we'll ever bring. O Mother of our learning, To thy banners we'll ever cling And shout thy praises as we sing To thee for evermore. 5 9 DEDICATION We dedicate with pride our 1964 edition of the Henry Laurens to Mrs. Margaret Ballard, whose service to Laurens High School has been evidenced by her ex- cellent work as teacher of social studies and commerce Her dignity of manner, sense of fairness, and friend- liness to all have earned her the respect of the entire student body. QOOGOO )oeo Teachers leave memorable impressions on the minds and hearts of those they teach. Through their own lives and associations they exert a power over their stu- dents. ’ Here at Laurens High School, not only have they taught accurately and earnestly, but they have in- spired us with the desire to teach ourselves. For this devoted service we are grateful. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY OFFICES OF THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT KEEP BUSY! Mr. J. K. Laurens High School recorded a disastrous season in football this year defeating only Blue Ridge and tieing Hillcrest. The Tigers scored eighty-four points as com- pared to two hundred thirty-eight scored by the oppo- nents during the 1963 season. The Tigers of 1963 displayed moments of weakness and moments of strength. In the first eight clashes the Bengals managed only fifty-nine points while the oppo- nents were piling up a total of two hundred twenty. In their ninth contest the Tigers rose to the occasion to score their only victory on a cold, windy night at Blue Ridge by 25-0. The high scorer for the season was Rob- ert Thomason with twenty-four points. Laurens completed the season with a record of one win, nine losses, and one tie. At the conclusion of the season Guard Donnie Sumerel was selected Most Valu- able Player and Best Lineman; Charles Hall, Best Back; Jimmy May, Best Blocker; Jimmy Thompson, Sportsman- ship; Shell Dula, Most Improved. Seniors Donny Barnhart, Gordon Cooper, James Col- ey, Charles Hall, Gary Madden, Jimmy May, Mickey Reeves, Rowland Milam, Jimmy Thompson, Charles Wal- drep, and Donnie Sumerel played their last season for Laurens High School. Combination of Offensive Formations 79 Miss June Davis The long awaited homecoming was the high- light of the football season. As queen, June Davis, chosen by the student body, reigned over the activities. Along with June, seven sponsors of the players and four grade attendants made the day a happy time. At assembly there was a parade of the football boys and their sponsors. A pep meeting followed. That night, at the game, the queen and her attendants rode on a beautiful float decorated by the cheerleaders, assisted by Mrs. Grace Bradley and Mrs. Louise Motes. Sponsors and attendants sat on the side- line to cheer the football team during the game. A lovely queen ond four of her ladies ride around the field. The play vividly portrays the constant struggle of Mr. Porter to prove to Miss Jonas and the rest of the town that a minister's children are normal children and not little angels as they are frequently visualized. “Pictures don't lie, Mr. Porter. I've got evidence! “As many weddings as I've performed in almost twenty-five years, I still get a funny feeling in my heart every time. § Lassie — dinna be so free with your tongue. It's the minister's house you're in. I like it very much. And I hope I suit you and all the other members of my parish. I didn't believe this idle Thrums gossip about the new minister and a gypsy. But I see I was wrong. My husband and I have just returned from prayer meeting — you see, I haven't even taken off my cloak. SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS THE LITTLE MINISTER” March 13, 1964 CAST Jean McFadden Mora McLaren Lord Rintoul Rob Dow Gavin Dishart Margaret Dishart Dr. McQueen Sergeant Halliwell Effie Nanny Webster Extras Toni Jo Hagan Jenny Kirby Jimmy McCullough Buddy Bishop Freddie Boyd Sharon Elmore Kit Carson Boyd Sexton Dianne Davis Tommie Franks Dick Byars Gordon Cooper Jimmy May John Robert Spearman James M. Barrie's story of The Little Minister is dramatized by Roland Fernard and is presented in a play in three acts. The action takes place in the parlour of the mini- ster's house in Thrums, Scotland, in the spring and sum- mer of the 1860's. Mr. Dishart, the little minister, confronts many prob- lems in his new parish in the small Scottish village. He not only struggles with Lord Rintoul, a wealthy land- owner, over the rights of the weavers but also is in constant conflict with Babbie, a roving gypsy girl, who seems to have the entire village in a trance. Mr. Dishart's decisions and actions concerning the wel- fare of his parishioners combine to make a dramatic and entertaining story. 93 With the blaring of bugles, an austere procession of Roman citizens filed into the ivy-columned banquet hall to celebrate the birthday of Rome. Ernest Ferguson, presiding as Julius Caesar, welcomed the guests. Following the banquet two playlets were presented by the second year Latin students. The dramatizations included a play concerning the muses, nine goddesses of art and science, and excerpts from the life of Julius Caesar. In the festive atmosphere of the high school building on the evening of April 19, 1963, the traditions of ancient Rome were again revived. ROMAN BANQUET Ernest and Florence Ann are as splendid as the Caesars. Students Revive Roman Life and The world of the Caesars seems very much olive. 94 Ancient times and customs are on display. Times in Pageantry Stately goddesses grace the high school stage. Even the muses could envy these girls. 95 JUNIOR-SENIOR Juniors Offer Seniors a Happy The clip-clop of wooden shoes beneath a canopy of Dutchman's blue paper streamers brings to memory May 3, the annual Junior-Senior Dance. The theme Windmills and Wooden Shoes was brought to life with a sixteen foot windmill, a dike and other symbols of Holland. Little Dutch girls and boys, sur- rounded by tulip beds, danced in a floor show. A solo dance and songs including solo and duet parts added color to the entertainment period. As the finale, Windmills of Holland was sung, the little Dutch boys and girls marched out through the garden. Windmills of Holland turn for the Junior-Senior. Junior-Senior guests step forward in the Grand March. The Zuider Zee wos never gayer! Sharon and chorus dance to a happy Dutch tune. MARDI GRAS French Club Holds Annual Party French students observed the annual Mardi Gras on Saturday, February 1, at the Mary Musgrove Hotel in Clinton. In keeping with the New Orleans Mardi Gras, students and their guests celebrated the festival in a variety of costumes ranging from the eighteenth century colonials to the twentieth century beatniks. In a gay French Quarter atmosphere Freddie Boyd and Ann Workman reigned as king and queen over the festivities, which included a supper served buffet style and a dance with music by the Laurens High School dance band. Students enjoy the atmosphere of a French Cafe. ?r' 9 98 ' V '£ 't BEAUTY An If For Girls (With Apologies to Mr. Rudyord Kipling) If you can dress to make yourself attractive. Yet not make puffs and curls your chief delight; If you can swim and row, be strong and active, But of the gentler graces lose not sight; If you can dance without a craze for dancing. Play without giving play too strong a hold. Enjoy the love of friends without romancing. Care for the weak, the friendless, and the old; Can sing when asked, without excuse or stammer. Can rise above unfriendly snubs and slurs; If you can make good breads, as well as fudges. Can sew with skill, and have an eye for dust; If you can be a friend, and hold no grudges, A girl whom all will love because they must; If, sometimes, you shall meet and love another. And make a home with faith and peace combined. And you, its soul—a loyal wife and mother— You'll work out pretty nearly to my mind The plan that's been developed through the ages. And win the best that life can have in store; You'll be, my girl, a model for the sages— A woman whom the world will bow before.
