L Q 'E MM, M wma Mm iw Q L 44 Outlook OUTLOOK STAFF EDITS WEEKLY PAPER Written, edited, typed, and printed by students, the Outlook again recorded student life at Laurelwood. Bon Woodard, Editor, was assisted by the Assistant Editor, Dave Rappei. The Editorial Techniques class cont1'i- buted to the paper by Writing articles. The paper, instead of coming out as a magazine as last year, is now published as a one sheet Weekly newspaper. The Laurelleaf Editor, Rhonda Hobson, along with the help of ,Susie Vipond, Assistant Editor, and Sponsor, Mr. Ingram, published a new look in the Laurelleaf. The advertisements, instead of being put in the Laurel, were put in the Laurelleaf, thus giving the advertiser a complete year -of advertising. They also succeeded in putting the Laurelleaf out sooner than in years before. Laureieaf 45 46 LAS S STRI E FOR CRDER LAS First Semester. Amid early sunsets, disagreements on calls, and as- sorted complications, the team executed a real good season. As in previous years, the guys interested in play- ing were divided into an A and B league. Divided by ability and interest, teams were made up with a new purpose in mind. just having fun, instead of winning all of the time, became the new feeling. The contests came down to the last game. A game featuring the two only undefeated teams of the season. Squads of J. Moreno vs. W. Dennison met to decide the champion. Both with records of 4 and 0, the face-off revealed Moreno the victor. sf A LEA GUE Team W L Moreno 5 0 Dennison 4 1 Koronko 3 2 Benway 2 3 Henry l 4 Edge 0 5 B LEA GUE Team W L Lambert 4 1 Epping 3 2 Dond ino 3 2 Eslinger 2 3 Reese 2 3 Steppe 1 4 74 Volleyball A CTIVE VOLLEYBALL SEASON Girls Volleyball-It's a good way to let your frustrations out-really sock that ball good! Girl's Volleyball intramurals got under Way at the beginning of the year, but after some time they were discontinued. However, unofficial games were played throughout the year. Volleyball 75 91 K Jxx s -.. '4s 'f7 i1 ' .j ,-,.-1.-Liu, This year's intramural volleyball season was one of the best ever. There were six teams in both A and B league and each team played each other twice thus mak- ing a total of ten games. The games were played in rounds. Both A and B leagues finished the first round of games but only the A league finished the second round. The A league was a very tight race which went down to the last game before the champion was decided. Going into the last game both Spainhower and Luepton had identical 7-2 records. Spainhower won that game which gave his team the champion- ship. 76 Basketball FARM SYSTEM DEVELOPED New programs were stalted in our in- tramural basketball program this year. There were still six teams in A and B leagues but there were only six captains for both leagues. This instigated the new farm system where each captain had both an A and B league team. This made it possible for those who were excelling in B league to go up and play on the A league tea.m. Another new program was the exhibi- tion games. These games told the teams which teams were strong and how to play against them. The six captains of the A and B leagues are Cam Koronko, John Moreno, Frank Russell, Doug Sharp, Pat Smart, and Derrick Teal. Basketball 77 78 All Stars FERMANTEZ COACHES TO VICTORY Some of the finest basketball players compose the All-Start team this year. The team got together after a regular tryout in October. Then after the try- outs the coach, Mr. Fermantez, selected ten players. After a few practices and games several new players were placed on the team to fill in the gap of those who left. Two of the most recent ad- ditions are sophomores who were added and will help the team next year to have more experience. The All Stars have played five games so far this year and have a 4-1 record with the only loss going to a Portland city league team. The wins have been over three alumni teams and the factory team. The fol- lowing people have been members -of the team this year: Wendell Dennison, Bob Hardy, jack Iensen, Cam Korcmko, Kevin Koronko, Greg Lang, john Mo- reno, Ron Pifer, Melvin Schultz, Mike Seaton, Doug Sharp, Pat Smart, Gary Spainhower, Tim Thomas, and Ron Woodard. if , ,A,, 5' 512253733 ,.-X .rcs , ., ,,A. . . . This new program was the free-throw contest which involved some forty bas- ketball players. The way the free-throw contest was held was each player was matched with another player and they met and shot three roundsg and the one who made the most free-throws won the match and goes to meet the winner of another contest. The loser is eliminated. The round is considered over when a player misses a shot. Our win- ncr this year was Iohn Moreno. He not only took each match he played but he also made the most consecutive baskets with 17. Each contestant enjoyed this match and it is hoped that this program will continue next year. 80 Tennis 1 l l 1 Ping Pong, Tennis, Cycling, Running Besides the organized sports on cam- pus there Were the leisure sports such i as ping pong and cycling. The Offi- cers, their dates, and the deans all doubled as their favorite story book character. The evening began with a grand tour of the dormitory where, while touring one would bump into Cinderella on her Way to the grand ball or Little Red Riding Hood on her way to grandmothers house. The cafe- teria put on a buffet dinner, that was enjoyed before everyone went to the chapel for a short program that was highlighted by a very wobbly Old Mother Hubbard. Sago, 'Xi' DJJ J v XX s X 1 108 Sacred Music SACRED CHRISTMA S PROGRAM The Friday night Vesper service Was opened with the Concert Band. The program was on the sacred birth and early life of Christ. Carols, done by different groups, reminded everyone listening of the meaning and glory of Christ's birth. The feature of the pro- gram was Elder Santee singing with the Chamber Band. Week of Prayer 109 FACULTY SPEAK FOR PRAYER WEEK The faculty presented a very beneficial week of prayer, based on the everyday needs of the soul. There were two meet- ings each day. One at noon and one in the evening. The week brought about a closer relationship between the faculty and students. Many students realized that the faculty were working for the good of the whole school. 110 Christmas Banquet CHRISTMA S WITH A LLENS The L.A.S. Banquet really put everyone at home. There were rooms set up that reminded most stu- dents of some of their great past Christmases. Ver- sitron Food Service provided a real home-style Christmas dinner and a large star ice-carving. The program consisted of reminiscing by the Allen family and their friends. Portland Union Academy put on the musical part of the program. SENIGRS PRE E TED The recognition of the Senior class was a course of events that began with Sabbath School and ended in an evening program that night. Elder Lewis from Walla Walla College spoke for the church service. The program in the evening started with Mr. York pre- senting the class which was accepted by Elder Meske. The officers then gave speeches on class colors, the symbol, aim, and motto. Following the speeches, the musical and humorist people of the class entertained their guests. To conclude the evening the junior class put on a reception for the Seniors and their parents. of 54 112 fefygmling 9? dv QDOX Qggfgzff rv X ANU. 92 ff MXSQZQQ V gjffffs 4509! Though some returned inside quickly be- cause of cold, most people seemed to enjoy them- selves thoroughly. The central place to have fun seemed to be on the hill in front of the girls dormi- toryg sliding dovvn on cafeteria tray, plywood, and even a few sleds. Christmas Program 119 With a backdrop of lacy snowflakes, both choirs, the Laurel Singers and Choral, along with both bands, per- formed for the Secular Christmas Program. Not all of the program, however, consisted of Christmas songs. The opening selections were more contemporary, leading into a Christmas spirit with the rest of the performances.
