' r A WEEK AT LAURELWOOD If the little Dutch boy and girl whose pictures decorate our Division Sheets were to spend -a week in actually visiting Laurelwood, these are some of the things they might see: Should they arrive early Sunday morning, they would find the dormitories much more quiet than usual, because sleeping in is one of the joys of Sunday morning. Hans might find in almost any room a scene like the one which decorates the bottom of this page. Even Rusty, the school mascot, gets an extra forty winks on Sunday. For the industrious, however, this is a day to balance the work budget, and all over the campus Hans and Gretchen would see scenes like those pictured here, ffarm boys working with teams, tractors, or pruning knives and busy workers pushing the construction of our new buildings. In the dining room at noon our boys and girls seem to shun one another in a most unusual way, for stag tables are a Sunday tradition. During most of the school year, the skating hour in the gym is the highlight of the day, but Spring weather brings hikes, tennis, bicycling, and picnics to brighten Sunday afternoons. ,4r' ff' ,Z nf' Hans and Gretchen might learn to understand the American term Blue Monday if they observed the reluctant expressions with which we return to classes after a week-end of relaxation. Notice the Monday morning countenances of our dignified Seniors! But Gretchen might hnd any number of girls like Helen Johnson, who can smile even on Blue Monday. Every other Monday morning our Associated Student Body oliicers have charge of chapel, giving us varied pro- grams, practice in parliamentary procedure, and an opportunity to discuss problems and ideas for the im- provement of our school. As the day progresses, we get into the swing of our work once more. The after- noon program includes such activities as the meetings of various musical groups such as choir and glee clubs and of the medical cadets, directed by Mr. Wisbey. If our school board should drop in for an afternoon visit, Hans and Gretchen could report that the mists of Blue Monday had cleared away and all was operating smoothly. Today Hans and Gretchen will spend their time visiting various classes. If it happens to be one of the mysterious freak days that amaze the faculty on rare occasions, Gretchen may find that all the girls have their hair in pigtails, or all are attired in wildly clash- ing colors. There was a day, as pictured here, when most of the girls and even some of the boys brought toy animals to classes and we seemed to resemble an overgrown kindergarten. But don't be alarmed! We are capable of serious work too, as clicking typewriters in Mrs. Johnsons room, lovely pastel drawings in Miss Millers art class, and becoming garments in Mrs. Hagle's sewing classes will testify. Work in the science laboratories is done on Sunday, but Hans and Gretchen can inspect our stock room and convenient laboratory rooms. The Cadettes in their becoming blue uniforms meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. l3 W .,-1 By Weclnesday' Hans and Gretchen will be used to the school program. Perhaps they will make a tour of the dormitories while the first period classes are in progress. Gretchen may accompany Miss Rook and Hans be escorted by Dean johnson as they check to see that rooms are in apple-pie order. Wl1at's this?l Someone sleeping in on llvtldlltifddj' morning! Wake up, Harryf Bible Doctrines class is well under way. Now our little Dutch friends may slip into an unoccu- pied seat in chapel to enjoy one of our principals in- spirational and interesting sermonettes, join in the morning hymn, and hear whatever program is pre- pared for that day. Mr. Hansen's classes in radio and carpentry meet today and there is much to see in those classrooms. In the afternoon perhaps Ed Todd will give Hans 11 ride on the tractor which hauls the loads of wood, and Gretchen can visit the music conserva- tory where our instrumentalists are filling the air with cheerful, if sometimes inharmonious, tones. Thursday is just one more school day, and by now Hans and Gretchen are accustomed to the classroom schedule. So after visiting the radio class on the third floor, they may wander about the campus, watching construction on the new buildings, and viewing opera- tions at th: power house and in the carpentry class. Perhaps they will meet Mrs. Walters taking her sons for a stroll, or our principal himself hurrying away on important business. Afternoon will find everyone at some sort of work or play. Ye Laurel Editor prefers archery. Friday is a busy day, because the duties of prepar- ing for Sabbath are added to our regular schedule. Any time after dinner on Friday, Hans and Gretchen might see scenes like the ones pictured here,-boys taking their laundry to be checked in, girls bringing home piles of freshly ironed clothes QThat's Bette pausing to get a bit of sunshine beside the Annex steps., and everyone hustling to have baths taken and clothes ready before Sabbath. The picture taken on a long-ago Friday shows you how our parents gave us the right start on this bathing program. In the dormi- tories there is a regular bee-hive of activity as girls and boys re-arrange and clean their rooms. Virginia has finished early and can relax with her panda for a well- earned rest. Up on the hill we find Mrs. Larsen, as house-mother, giving a bit of final advice to one of her charges before she comes to the laundry to see that the weeks work is all complete. Everyone enjoys the peace and inspiration of our Sabbath at Laurelwood. Under Mrs, Nelson's direc- tion, our student officers conduct a Sabbath School which is interesting and which gives splendid train- ing for service. We join with our friends of the com- munity for the church service at eleven o'clock. The robed choir from the academy, directed by Mr. Lyman, adds much to the beauty of the service. There are always many things to do in the afternoons. Mr. and Mrs. Hagle have directed large and enthusiastic classes in Master Comrade work. The missionary Volunteer Society, with Miss Coleman as sponsor, always has an interesting program for us. Spring weather tempts us all to walk and explore the beauties all around the lovely setting of our school. '31 ,..vY JL 474441 9 ia!
