CHECK-IN The Making of Our Yearbook The staff of the 1988 Laurel traveled to the Josten's Printing Plant in State College. Pennsylvania, on a blustery, cold day in November. The objective of the trip was to learn how our book is printed. We were taken on a tour through the printing processing plant. Our first stop was the check-in department. There the plant representatives look to see that all of our materials have arrived and are properly labeled. From there, our design forms are sent to the layout department and our written material is sent to the copy lab. In the layout department, the photographs are positioned on a sample page, marked for reductions, enlargements and special graphics, then sent on to the camera shop. Meanwhile, the copy is typeset by a computer operator to match the style chosen for the printing in the yearbook. Using VERY large cameras, photographers reshoot the necessary pictures in varying sizes according to our special layout forms. After developing, the pictures are reunited with the copy in the central sorting area. The finished negatives for the photos and the typeset copy are then pasted on the layout board and sent back to the photography lab for preparation of the offset press master. The master is then sent to the press room where huge printers process and print the pages in 16-page signatures. The printed copies are then sent to the folder. After all pages are printed and folded, a technician assembles each book using a machine that collates all the available signatures. The assembled books are then sent to the bindery where they are sewn and the covers are glued in place. Following final inspection, the books are crimped so that they will lie flat on a table, making it easier for you to enjoy them. The staff, following the impressive tour, retired to the Josten's library where they examined many of the more than 700 different yearbooks produced by Josten’s last year and enjoyed a short game of Win. Lose, or Draw with Lisa Closson playing the role of Burt Convey. Now you have before you the final product of our staff's efforts. We hope that you enjoy reading and remembering just as much as we enjoyed making it possible.

We The People — Building The annual Laurel Valley Open House was once again a success. The evening began with concert performances by the marching band, junior high chorus, and senior high chorus. Soloist Keith White entertained the large crowd with his rendition of Desperado”. Mr. Whisdosh then welcomed parents, family members and guests and invited them to make themselves at home in their school while visiting teachers and watching special demonstrations during the evening.
